This is one of Al Clayton's powerful photographs in the 1969 book Still Hungry in America, which chronicled poverty and hunger in the American South.
There’s so much going on in the USA that warrants attention these days that it’s hard to know where to start. But, since I’m an economist I’m going to start here.
“There are families not eating at the end of the month,” said Stephen Quinn, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Wal-Mart Stores, and “literally lining up at midnight” at Wal-Mart stores waiting to buy food when paychecks or government checks land in their accounts.
Among the steps Wal-Mart is taking to address the changes in shopping habits, Mr. Quinn listed an overhaul of the retailer’s private-label brand, Great Value, which is promoted in commercials describing how families can fix dinners with Great Value products “for less than $2 a serving.”
The really sad thing about this blurb is that I got it from the Media & Advertising section of the NY Times. It did not come from the op-ed page, it did not come from the business section nor the politics section. It’s there because Walmart is having to work on its product mix to reflect hunger in those families living below the poverty living in one of the richest countries in the world –The United States–and I am deeply ashamed as a citizen of that country to read this anywhere STILL after all these years.
There’s been an academic discussion about the disconnect between what some of our nation’s statistics tell us is going on and the reality on the ground. There was a conference this weekend to talk about re-working the way the nation calculates its GDP. This is extremely important. Because of globalization, we are most likely over stating our performance in way that is throwing off our policy targets. We are losing per capita income from the lowest to middle quintiles and we are hemorrhaging well-paying jobs for our most vulnerable citizens. They are not able to get enough to live on and they are not wealthy enough to buy health care insurance or to pay premium taxes to feed an already over-bloated, costly, and inefficient industry.
A widening gap between data and reality is distorting the government’s picture of the country’s economic health, overstating growth and productivity in ways that could affect the political debate on issues like trade, wages and job creation.
The shortcomings of the data-gathering system came through loud and clear here Friday and Saturday at a first-of-its-kind gathering of economists from academia and government determined to come up with a more accurate statistical picture.
The fundamental shortcoming is in the way imports are accounted for. A carburetor bought for $50 in China as a component of an American-made car, for example, more often than not shows up in the statistics as if it were the American-made version valued at, say, $100. The failure to distinguish adequately between what is made in America and what is made abroad falsely inflates the gross domestic product, which sums up all value added within the country.
American workers lose their jobs when carburetors they once made are imported instead. The federal data notices the decline in employment but fails to revalue the carburetors or even pinpoint that they are foreign-made. Because it seems as if $100 carburetors are being produced but fewer workers are needed to do so, productivity falsely rises — in the national statistics.
The most interesting thing about this is that the argument is that our workers supposedly have become increasingly more productive over the last decade or so. What we might be measuring are impacts from trade instead. This goes a long way in explaining why the returns on labor (MRP or marginal revenue product) and the returns on capital are becoming so disparate.
The statistical distortions can be significant. At worst, the gross domestic product would have risen at only a 3.3 percent annual rate in the third quarter instead of the 3.5 percent actually reported, according to some experts at the conference. The same gap applies to productivity. And the spread is growing as imports do.
That may help to explain why the recovery from the 2001 recession was a jobless one for many months and why the recovery from this recession is likely to generate few jobs for many months.
In addition, more detailed import data would help to explain wage inequality, by linking some low wages more accurately to particular industries exposed to import competition.
On another front, many argue that labor productivity is rising faster than the pay of workers who made the greater productivity possible. That argument would be watered down if more accurate data showed that productivity had been overstated.
Just as more and more working class families fall into the cracks, we also have the latest sham of health care where families now struggling to make ends meet with face a tax if they don’t buy health insurance from overpriced insurance industry plans. Let me point you back to a piece in Politico for this beauty.
Page 29, sentence one of the bill introduced by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont) says: “The consequence for not maintaining insurance would be an excise tax.”
And the rest of the bill is clear that the Finance Committee does, in fact, consider it a tax: “The excise tax would be assessed through the tax code and applied as an additional amount of Federal tax owed.”
The bill requires every American, with few exceptions, to carry health insurance. To enforce this individual mandate, the Senate Finance Committee created the excise tax as a penalty for people who don’t have insurance – and it can run as much as $3,800 a year per family.
The House bill also refers to the penalties for not carrying insurance as a tax. It calls for a “tax on individuals without acceptable health care coverage” and amends the tax code to implement it.
I have to ask what it is wrong with this country? It seems to pushing its poor to the brink of destruction during a time of when its also funding (through direct funds and also extremely low interest rates) arbitrage profits for the already rich at places like Goldman Sachs. We might as well just call them all Princes and call ourselves the new corporate serfs because we’re going to be paying for our indentured status for some time under what’s going on right now. We’re tithing for the benefit of huge financial institutions be they investment bankers, insurance, or mortgage brokers. They’ve become the residents of the neoGothic cathedrals of the 21st century dark ages of America. We’re back to ‘Still Hungry in America’ and this is ever so wrong.
Oh, meanwhile, via CNN breaking news:
The Dow hits 10,170 in intraday trading, its highest level in more than a year.

Interesting abt the correct measuring of the GDP – wondered always how you can do this accurately.
Well anyway- I am not gonna worry abt this today as we are celebrating 20 yrs of the opening of the Wall. It was an AWESOME day 20 yrs ago!
Happy-Fall-of-Wall-Day to you in NewO!
I always remember it because my youngest was born on 11-8-89. She’s got that same kind of tear down the wall spirit too!!!
def you wont forget that date! congrats to your own personal achievement 20 yrs ago!
Spiegel Online photo gallery of the Wall – then and now
http://www.spiegel.de/fotostrecke/fotostrecke-48432.html
“Ms Merkel … led a procession of leaders through the Brandenburg Gate – the symbol of German reunification in 1990. The presidents of Russia and France, the British premier and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were among those who joined the German chancellor. ….. Mrs Clinton also spoke, before introducing a surprise video address from Washington by Mr Obama.”
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8349742.stm
#@$%! When I read the story earlier this morning, the text said “Mr. Obama, who was unable to attend….” Scrubbed already.
What a chump — decides not to go and sends a video of Himself instead.
Obama is so pathetic. He wanted to speak at the Brandenburg Gate last year and got pushed off to another location because Merkel thought it was utterly preposterous of him to speak at such a historic location.
Now he can’t get his a$$ into gear, probably as he will be not in the spotlight among all the heavyweight polticians. What will he say to Nobel Prize winner Walesa who actually risked his life for poltiical change (change we can believe in) and said BO winning the prize was a bit premature.
But sending a video address – does he think he is Michael Jaskson and the WH is Wonderland??
What about the separation wall in israel ? any problems with that wall?
I think their plan is a very simple one – bankrupt everyone and the country will collapse.
This is a terrific post, Dakinikat, thank you once again for the high quality of the work you deliver here!
Then we’ll all be indentured servants and that’s how they want it to be.
thank you, it’s nice to be appreciated somewhere
Who is the “they”?
I’m thinking it’s the Vampire Squid crowd, but I’m thinking it’s a bigger conspiracy than I thought now …
Somehow I knew VAMPIRES would be involved….
Sorry for OT, but Claire McCaskill says she’s OK with including the Stupak amendment in the Senate bill. It doesn’t affect the majority of Americans, she says.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/09/mccaskill-senate-could-li_n_350625.html
we should drown her in emails and phone calls
that’s fine keep posting it …
She’s already drowning in kool-aid.
Kool-aid kills empathy! Should petition for a warning label.
to think I spent days making calls for her in her first election to senate! If there is one women I detest almost as much as Donna Brazile, it is Clair.
Will Claire McCaskill be attending Sarah Palin’s next pro-life rally?
Obama, Pelosi, et al did this on a Saturday so a majority of Americans (i.e. WOMEN) wouldn’t notice.
It’s just not Claire saying that the Senate could support the amendment. The article talks about the Hatch and other pending amendments that are trying to do the same thing. Also, the Catholic Bishops are going to lobby the Senate very hard. Why, oh why, are we going backwards. For the greater good, women are getting trampled again.
Thank you for this post, Dakinikat. I’m just sick about this. I remember back in the ’60s when all the news reports came out about children starving in America–having rickets and even swollen bellies. LBJ managed to lift everyone up for awhile, but since Reagan we’ve all been going backwards. Now we don’t even have a Democratic party. All we have are two corporate parties!
I read the Walmart statement and was just appalled. I can’t believe this is still an issue in this country and getting worse all the time. What is wrong with our leadership in Washington? They just get more out of touch all the time.
It costs so much to get to Washington, most of them were privileged their whole lives. They have no idea. But additionally, they (collectively) also seem to have no imagination. I’ve never had empty cupboards, but I can imagine it.
I’ve been seeing those “cheap eats” ads on grocery flyers for several months – not just Walmart.
Much like the Tin Man they have no hearts, and I’m starting to think they may very well be like the scarecrow they may be missing brains too. Boy Freud would have a field day with that bunchidentifying why they threw their mothers, sisters, aunts, daughters under the bus
And, like the Cowardly Lion, too.
Elite schools, from birth to Ivy League, followed by the salaries and bonuses they “deserve” because of their elite degrees.
They’re born out of touch….(and Obama is one of them)
I’m glad you added that last bit about 0zero — because I was thinking as while reading your sentence above that that was a perfect description of 0bambam.
I know where 0zero went to school in Hawaii — and I know graduates of that very exclusive private school for the very very very very rich.
Pidgin English is the main language most school kids speak in Hawaii — in class we spoke teachers’ English but everywhere else it is Pidgin English. However, Punahou is so removed from the culture of the rest of the island that students can go through the Punahou system and never learn Pidgin English. Graduates of Punahou if they want to remain in the islands THEN must learn Pidgin. Very true story as told to me by a parent (professor at U of H) about her own child who went to Punahou.
Obama lived in a very rich insulated bubble — thanks to the money his grandmother earned. We know he never learned the black family values called RESPECT grandma — if no one else in the world gets respect — grandma does. This is also a major family value of kids who grow up in multi-ethnic, multi-cultural Hawaii — respect Grandma (or TuTu — which Mrs. Obama uses in an insulting way by saying TOOT. God I dislike that b*tch.) I have a fierce loyalty to my adopted grandparents and family in Hawaii — OHANA (family) is very important –and I was lucky enough to be included as family in local island families.
Ozero just doesn’t learn about the Ohana loyalty — which translates to epathy for OTHERS. He seems to be an un-socialized human being — he missed out on big chunks of the human socialization process. But he somehow learned to fake “emotions” by reading the script.
Well you should let the majority affect Claire McCasket.
13% more women voted for Barnacle Obama than for John McCain, only 1% more men did the same.
If some of those women voters could have foreseen the future, John MCCain would be in the White house.
If some of those had foreseen the future, or the plain truth that was right in front of us, then Hillary Clinton would be president.
Dak, don’t worry, be happy. The Dow is over 10K, so everything is really peachy keen.
The stock buyers have to now know that the insurance companies will be in fine shape with the new insurance buyers. God bless the insurance companies and Obama. Hope their plans are subject to pre-existing conditions, STUPIDITY!
Chilling. What if Catholic leaders put their energy, political clout, and focus on the poor in this wealthy country instead of taking women’s rights back to ancient times? What if?
They’ll release a statement, and no one will cover it.
they like people poor and stupid, it’s the only places they do well
I just called all three of my pols: John Garamendi, Barbara Boxer, and Dianne Feinstein. If anything, I am angrier. Feinstein’s aid didn’t even know what the Stupak ammendment is. This is so outrageous.
SERIOUSLY? WTF.
Good to know how on top of women’s issues they are.
Ok – well, done – if we keep bombarding them they’ll get the idea that we’re not real happy with them at this point in time
I’m afraid I didn’t use the phrase ‘not real happy’–more like outraged and astounded that the Dems would disgrace themselves by not standing up for women and treating us like second class citizens. Also noted that the tide turned for women in the Dem party when the DNC, on May 31 2008, handed the election to Barack Obama at the expense of Hillary Clinton, and they shouldn’t think that millions of Dems didn’t notice. We have not forgotten and they should know it.
I knew women would be sold down the river when the first thing they said in ‘08 as to why we HAD to vote Dem was in order to protect woman’s rights…. you just knew
Yes…anything they say needs protecting..they can’t actually protect. If we actually were protected, then they couldn’t tell us we had to vote for them to protect us.
To paraphrase Rep. Alan Grayson ( D-FL ):
The answer to poverty in America is – don’t be poor. And if you are poor – die quickly, because you are just a lot of dead weight anyway.
This country should be ashamed.
BTW, I wonder what the Obamas’ are having for dinner tonight? Something good, I bet.
This is of course NOT Rep. Grayson’s view. His is just the opposite.
But I think it represents the view of many fat-cats in government and the private sector.
sadly that does seem to be the message coming out of Washington in this, the most progressive of eras.
I saw a photo of one of Obama’s meals, probably a lunch by himself, at the White House. Looked very staged since it was next to a “For the President: Classified” folder. The white plate held tiny portions of three items something white (mashed potatoes?), orange (yam?), and brown (some kind of sliced meat). His drink was water in a wine glass. Very small portions.
No wonder he keeps his figure. Nice having a gym in the house, too.
I’m a formerly-practicing pol. I’m appalled about the amendment but also know that th ekey is what will come back in the conference committee report. That will be an up or down vote without amendment — except for the possible “motion to commit with instructions…” I suspect this was a vote for the “moderates” and the leadership DAMN well better ENSURE that it is stripped in CONFERENCE!
I see you have some faith left. Hope that works out for you.
I think the eventual conference bill will most likely be worse than any of the current bills. I’m sure that the reconciliation process will add an even larger grab-bag of corporate goodies, all of which will make it into law simply because the final vote will be up-or-down, with no amendments possible. I have no hope at all that the Stupak amendment will be stripped – but I’d be willing to bet a fair chunk of change that the final bill won’t include anything that could even be charitably termed a “public option”.
Lambert’s right about all this: http://www.correntewire.com/democratic_narrative_weakness.
That is the essence of correctness.
I had the same thought yesterday, it’s not that the Dems are spineless, it’s that their agenda is the same as the repubs. Actually, that notion explains a lot.
My own position on this has evolved.
1. For a long time, I thought they they were weak.
2. In 2009, I decided that they suck.
3. Now I think that they’re weak and they suck. These
are not mutually imcompatible propositions.
Very interesting, dak! I haven’t seen that anywhere before, about how part of the GDP is actually sloppy import estimates. It explains a lot! Fascinating. Depressing, but fascinating.
One more proof that the US has become a fascist (corporatist) state. I’m never going back!
inquiring minds want to know where is it a lot better. some of us would like to bail.
Canada isn’t perfect, but it’s at least marginally better. At least for now. Avoid Alberta, though.
Bahamas?
I was making a list the other day and had to stop when I ran out of paper. The problem for me is finding a place with a cost of living where you can support yourself in modest retirement. Especially important since the dollar’s value isn’t too great.
Thailand – excellent food as well!
Yes and some of the Caribbean Islands — British Colonies. I have friends (conservative) on a Caribbean Island and they have been exposed to the Brit type Health care — which they use and think is great.
Dear RalphB,
In my considerable experience, to darn near anywhere else outside N. America is a good place to bail if you can find cheap land to grow veggies. Well, not Australia, there’s a limit.
The main thing is, know why you are going, know what you will be able to provide to the new place besides your retirement money and your needs to be served, and don’t moan when you get there, because the truth is, the whole world is living on borrowed time, and even the most idyllic places are being invaded as we speak by the kind of people and situations you are probably hoping to avoid.
Sad. Also, keeping in mind that global warming turns to global cooling at the drop of a hat (the hat dropped some time back) you might be wise to choose a place to land that will not be frozen solid most of the year as time goes by. Good luck, but get moving soon.
Susie
The Dow and the Wal-Mart midnight lineup. Kind of reminds you of Versailles and “let them eat cake”.
yup, this is the let him ‘em waffles administration

OT: but does anyone have a good link to the actual Stupak amendment? There is a lot of misinformation flying around,.
I don’t know how to do a link on WordPress, but here is the government site with the pdf version of the amendment:
http://rules-republicans.house.gov/Media/PDF/Stupak3962_108.pdf.
Hmmm. Seems like WordPress was kind enough to create the link for me.
I got an email from Taylor Marsh about the health care debacle. She is nailing Pelosi but also laying the blame at B0’s feet. I was surprised because she switched from Clinton to B0 with alacrity and attitude at the end of the primary and her site became extremely hostile to people who didn’t do the same.
She also has a pod cast on Clinton’s speech at the No Limits conference, if anyone’s interested.
Thanks for this post, dak, and your recent ones, too. You are powerful when you channel Alice Paul!
Yeah, I got that email, too. Taylor Marsh’s traffic must have really fallen off.
When I received a previous email a few weeks ago, I unsubscribed quickly, but still got the recent mail.
She was such a disgusting turncoat.
Hot Air piece about stories in AP and LA Times that I think may be correct.
It’s Hot Air but it sounds more than possible to me. May be the best thing which could happen.
What “Democratic leadership on Capitol Hill”????????
The ones which suck.
That would be all of ‘em, IMO.
Obama + Pelosi + Reid = what leadership? what majority? It’s the GOP’s fault! (and on the off-chance that you aren’t pissed with something that they are doing, then praise be the Bipartisan Administration of Barack Obama!)
Dakinikat: This is a great post.
I hoped it would generate more discussion here about hunger and poverty in our great country. The media hasn’t really focused on it since RFK ran for president.
I guess people are more interested in Stupak.
In all fairness, this was a major focus of the Edwards campaign in the last election cycle. I’m curious as to why it didn’t get more traction. Some of us can remember when it was actually the stated policy of the government to reduce poverty, eliminate hunger, and achieve full employment.
Maybe it’s time to start talking about what we’d like our third (actually second) political party to espouse.
Yes, and I liked that Dem-worthy focus of Edwards on poverty and other social justice goals. Too bad he couldn’t keep his pants zipped.
My guess why poverty doesn’t get more attention is that:
1) it’s not “sexy” enough.
2) Poor people don’t contribute much to re-election campaigns.
3) US politicians have trended rightward, and their courage has gone to the South Pole.
(sigh) Remember the War on Poverty?
I think people think the problem has be solved and that there’s a lot of social services in place to take care of it. The problem is that so much of it has been defunded–especially the care of those with emotional/mental issues–since the Reagan years that it has compounded and there’s no real group that focuses on it. It’s evidently not glamorous enough for media attention.
The problem of hunger and poverty has definitely NOT been solved. The number of people ( especially women and children ) needing homeless shelters and free food at food banks and community kitchens is way up in my area. It will just get worse when the weather gets bad this winter.
It is not a “sexy” issue so the media ignores it.
Edwards could have done a lot of good by continuing to focus on poverty, maybe even getting a place in the Obama administration. Too bad he couldn’t keep his pecker in his pants.
I’m afraid that soon those people that we have so tradionally viewed as poor will be us. We are also in the eye of the storm and when we realize this, definitions of poverty may change to include 70% of Americans.
The Third Party should definitely have hunger and poverty as a core issue. I think the Edwards being discredited as the messenger has unfortunately hurt the message, which was a very good message.
that should read Edwards
not “the Edwards” (I still like Elizabeth)
Although I am well aware that Walmart is reaching out and trying to help people find ways to stretch their food money — still this is a very humane gesture on their part. I’m expecting that there are a whole lot of newly poor that need help in finding how to fix cheap meals. It’s for damn certain that the endless “news” shows will never have helpful tips on how to fix nutritious & cheap meals. (snark warning) Poor are the scum of the earth — god is punishing them — or so the new meme seems to be.
GEE — what I was trying to say is that Walmart is making money off of this good will gesture — it helps their bottom line. But even so it is a kind thing to do because so many people rely on Walmart — I believe that Walmart also negotiates with drug companies to get better prices on drugs for their customers. (Costco does this as well.)
Fuck — why the hell do we “elect” a human type person to the white house –let’s just eliminate the human middle MAN and just elect a corporation???
Right now Goldman Sucks is the defacto President — so let’s have bit of honesty and choose the Corporation on our Presidential ballets??
for some odd reason, I actually think Walmart may trying to do something reasonable with this … I can’t believe I said that but the grocery business is extremely low profit anyway so doing anything to cut the margin even more has to eat away what’s left. Even on some items grocery chains lose money and are paid back by high mark ups on other things. They may be using other items to subsidize this program because they know these folks are needy and also they are their core when it comes to buying other things. I think they may be going for customer loyalty in the long run on this if that’s their profit motive and taking some losses in the short run. And, believe me, I’m no fan of Walmart and I don’t really shop there unless under some completely odd circumstance.
This is not a President who supports women’s rights.
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/abc-news-exclusive-obama-jobs-health-care-ft/story?id=9033559
Oh well — I would have never guessed!!
/snark
From the above article:
—snip—
“I want to make sure that the provision that emerges meets that test — that we are not in some way sneaking in funding for abortions, but, on the other hand, that we’re not restricting women’s insurance choices,” he (Obama) said.
—snip —
Talking out both sides of his mouth again. And doncha’ like that “sneaking” bit? Not.
what hogwash. this is not a liberal President at all, this is someone who fashions himself the referee in a Disney movie.
Say, whatever happened to Obama’s “we are not a Christian nation” (The times he said that , Obama was actually likable enough)… if “prayer treatments” are such a must in the healthcare overhaul, why then must insurers who cover abortion not be part of the exchanges? SUCH BS. I’m so sure all these pols — whether it is Obama who is sooo concerned about funding abortions inadvertently (but apparently not enough to make it law to bill the inadvertent sperm donor) or Sarah Palin and all those pro-lifers who are either gloating over this Stupaksis or the Claire McCaskills who are “OK with it” — I am sure that all these pols have never taken a cent from insurers who cover abortion, let alone from anyone who has ever had or paid for abortion. After all that would make them complicit in Teh Abortions which are a Woman’s Personal Responsibility, doncha know.
In the archives of various blogs (like No Quarter) where the 0bots were allowed to run free and repeat Axel-nut’s party line — there we can find the threatening and bullying of the 0bots regarding why women MUST vote Democrat — because ONLY the dems would “protect” women’s right to have an abortion — and the damned f*uking supreme court BS.
Well we have learned that the prez is women’s very worst enemy and the democrat party is women’s worst enemy — and more than likely the newest Supreme Justice is our worst enemy — she is after all another Catholic and I do NOT trust her at this point.
Insert Stateofdisbelieve’s rant HERE — I hate all the rat bastard democrats. ALL of them — every fucking last one of them. (with an exception for Hillary Clinton).
…and Bill
yep — and Bill.
Also I have a soft spot for former Governor Moonbeam (Gov. Brown). But most of the good ones have died it seems.
Totally OT, but here in MA while Coakley says she would vote against the Health care Bill because of stupak, Capuano (who voted for the final bill) continues his quest to chanlenge for the title of Biggest D— in the US, “giddily” declaring that he “finds it interesting that she would stanbd along among all the pro-choice members of the Massachusetts delegation” (we call that leadership, Mike). He then plays the this is what Teddy wopuld have anted card (you really, really don’t wanna go there),and winds up with a condescending lecture about ‘reality’:
Oh please have someone from his campaign call me, oh please, please, pretty please with sugar on top.
Quotes from boston.com
http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/11/coakley_no_on_h.html
Now we have to get behind her and get her elected.
Gee, I didn’t know that the Civil Rights bill had an amendment declaring women to be nothing but broodmares.
Lol! That is exactly what my sister said (well, she didn’t use the word broodmares, but she made exactly the same point. Go MA women!!!!!
)
Oh, that’s so funny. I have fantasies about getting Dem fund raising calls, too. And when they do call, my partner just says, “I’m not the one you want to talk too” and then hands me the phone.
I bet they are hearing earfuls from all over the country after this POS passed.
I have a policy of being pleasant to all political callers as I phonebank all the time and you get over dealing with rudeness real quick, but I definitely have a big mental list of things i feel need to be said in a calm, nice way.
Weirdly, though, I haven’t got a single call from him yet.
Yes, me too. I’ll never forget a doctor in Pennsylvania who reamed me out when I was calling for Hillary and even said he would “never vote for that dog if she was the last candidate on Earth.” My reply, as sweet as possible: ” well, as one doctor to another, I hope you’re not a gynecologist…”. The guy got my number and called me at 4 am 3 times. I was close to reporting him when he stopped.
Obtained: In Letter To Pelosi, 41 House Dems Pledge To Vote Against Bill With Anti-Abortion Amendment
http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/health-care/obtained-in-letter-to-pelosi-41-house-dems-pledge-to-vote-against-bill-with-abortion-amendment/
I’m waiting to see the names of the 41 Dems who will vote against the bill with the anti-abortion amendment because those are the only 41 House Dems we should consider supporting for reelection.
I am confused. Whay vote are they talking about? I thought the House already passed the bill, Stupak and all
They will have to vote again after the Senate finishes make it a lot worse.
yup
maybe their names can be on a sticky on the site somewhere

ack, comment went into spam..dakinikat are you around?
got it … just got back in from walking Karma
thx
OT: saw this on FDL yesterday (I think, may have been some other blog)
“Vagina Added Tax”
I like “I voted for Change, and all I got was this stupid coathanger.”
Speaking of coathangers, there’s a new post up!
How about YOU voted for Obama and all women got was this stupid coathanger.
Then we could go on like You voted for obama and all we got was another wiretapping program ..
or You voted for obama and all we got was an additional 30,000 troops sent to Afghanistan …
I can think of at least 20 of them right now
Hi all.
the Favreaus have come to roost…Democratic women who so feared Palin and lavished praises upon the Obama party were not paying attention…many still aren’t…
correction: Democratic women who so feared Hillary AND Palin…
You found it!
Just for you BB.
LOL. Come up to my new post!
You don’t get it: being poor is unAmerican, and god’s punishment on the lazy and inept. Why would the holy, Most American, one go against god’s intentions by helping such trash?
Homeland Gestapo Police State
Likud Joe Lieberman and Bibi
Backlash Neocon AIPAC
Projection much?
Remember, Goldman Sachs is doing “God’s work” in sucking all the value out of US companies and giving it to themselves. After the US taxpayers gave Goldman billions just months ago, the CEO has the nerve to say that bankers are so close to god.
Goldman is estimated to pay out $21.9 billion in bonuses for this year, as its $7.4 billion in profits for the first nine months are more than triple the $2.04 billion it posted for all of 2008.
Goldman got $10 billion in TARP taxpayer money and maybe 40 billion from the AIG bali-out.
So Goldman has this to say to America’s poor and tired and hungry: Drop dead! We are doing God’s work taking all the money from the economy, even though we produce nothing, and giving it to ourselves. SO there!
Goldman’s should at least let them eat cake.
Change does not come with a pen, our “rulers” don’t read. Change does not come with complaints, our “rulers” laugh at our misfortune. Change only comes at the tip of a spear.
Until we are all ready to accept that, we will continure to suffer.
Now is it not time for a resourced based society instead of currency based one.
How about checking out the Venus Project.

Correction.
By the time the Senate gets done with it, all it’ll be is a bill that requires all Americans to buy private health insurance at the going rates.
Yep, and for taxpayers to subsidize the high risk pool at who-knows- what the insurance companies will charge.
We should start over and demand that Medicare is expanded incrementally until everyone is covered.
What a farce this has turned out to be.
Maybe these are reasons for the seeming apathy about the poor & hungry in the U.S.
* people think the problem has been solved with social programs both gov & ngos
* no one has appeared as a visible advocate in Edwards’ scandal-forced absence.
* people think there is no solution i.e., the poor will always be with us – as long as there are no riots or threats of violence & long as they (the poor) stay invisible w/help from a complicit media everythings’ ok.
* in the absence of publicly financed elections (effectively killed by Team Obama) tackling poverty is not a corporate or religious fundamentalist (Catholic,Baptist, whatever) priority.

A few things that will go toward fixing this mess.
1. Disband the federal government and replace it with a lean, civil servant, administrative, agency.
2. Disband the offensive, military forces. We only have need for a defensive force. These were once called the militia’s of the several states and were federalized in 1903 and renamed national guard.
3. Abolish the “Federal” Reserve. Before centralized banking and the fiat currency system in this nation there was no poverty. You can find evidence of this via Benjamin Franklin’s comments about his visit to Britan before King George’s currency was thrust upon the Aemrican people. Our society is geared to elevate those who have a prosperous lineage rather than the self made man as it once was.
4. Abolish the illegal non government collection agency known as the IRS whom extorts income from the people of this nation and hands it over to the Federal Reserve. Our Income should be kept where it has an immediate effect, at home in your state. The Federal govenment has unconstitutionally usurped the power of the states by holding our income hostage until the states comply with their demands in order to recieve “federal” funding. This affects even our local governments who are downstream of our state governments. Therefore he who controlls the federal government controls by proxy the state and local governments. This is the heart of their power. We must dismantle this strangle hold by ridding ourselves of protection money scheme known as the IRS.
Shane, sorry I’m an economist and nearly all of the points you’re speaking of would basically ruin the country and the economy … you need to move to the libertarian paradise of Somalia and knock yourself out if some one else doesn’t do it for you first!
