Health Care Reform Bill Open Thread, Part II

right-wing-nut

Wingnuts control our government

Democrats in Congress are busy tonight trying to make sure that women can’t get abortions or birth control. The Stupak Amendment was defeated on a voice vote, probably because Boehner told the Republicans not to vote for it. Now the Republicans are proposing their own amendment that will make sure that we keep the status quo, except people will be able to buy coverage across state lines and no one will be able to sue their doctor or health plan for malpractice.

Document and react to the atrocities as you wish.

  1. F$#k them all,

F#$k everyone that looks like them,

and F*@k the %r^%$##DAMN horses they rode in on.

sorry…but that feels better. Just a bit tho

  2. I’m up here all alone and soooooo looonley.

  3. Sod – don’t hold back, let it all out.

  4. This would be absolutely comical if it weren’t so serious. In about 30 seconds, rahm and pelosi will be spinning this as Democrats beat back Republican amendment. Holy hermiola.

  5. this is so surreal

  6. SoD,

I just tweeted about the Vagina Wars.

  7. Holy hermiola? hmmmm, :? I never heard that one before you must be as upset as I am – this has got to be a bad dream – it just can’t be real.

  8. 10 of the Nuttiest Statements Elected Officials Have Made in the Health Care Battle

    http://www.alternet.org/politics/143790/10_of_the_nuttiest_statements_elected_officials_have_made_in_the_health_care_battle

  9. My new theory:
Both sides want to come up with a bill that is soooooooooooo friggin’ bad, the American people will get down on their knees and BEG them not to pass it.
And the status quo will remain….

  10. Whoever this guy is who is talking right now is pretty good. He sounds like he’s from Mass–no r’s.

Oh, it was Ed Markey. He’s my rep.

  11. well so much for universal heath care mabey the should cal it universal health care with the exception that its not universal.

  12. There will be another vote on Stupak amendment around 9:30. Apparently, it was tabled after it failed the voice vote. I don’t understand how these procedures work.

  13. Sadly, nothing that is happening in the House today is very surprising (shocking that they are getting away with it yes, but surprising no). The only thing that is remotely curious at all is that the people on the left who are surprised about what is going on have yet to put two-and-two together about what happened with the primaries and what is happening now. The DNC threw women, the working class, and older voters under the bus in 2008. As the party in power, the Dems are throwing everybody under the bus with more gusto is all. Change, as in change the tires on that bus so that they can run over us again.

bostonboomer/TC, before I get going just wanted to thank you for these threads.. I’ll check back here tomorrow to see what y’all live-blogged. I hope against Hope™ that something remotely in the direction of reform happens tonight.

  14. When I scrolled down on this new thread, I thought “SCREWED!” before I saw it was a wingnut.

When, and If, a healthcare bill is passed, do I recall correctly that it won’t go into effect for 2 years, or after the 2012 election?

    • not before 2013, and full implementation by 2019. Yippy skippy on that.

They were able to fully implement medicare in 1965 without benefit of computers or other communication technology in one year. 10 million seniors were covered in that time.

This piece of shit will not cover 1 additional person for more than 3 years.

    • Screwed works too!

  15. I’ve got to pack it in too – I’m getting very agitated and will never fall asleep if I continue reading about these jerks.

We can’t let them get away with this – and we can’t wait three more years to take care of this nonsense.

  16. The blather here is incomprehensible. We’ve never had publicly funded abortion in this country before so the conservatives are trying to make sure it isn’t in the stupid bill. Also, tort reform doesn’t mean you can’t sue a doctor or a hospital. It just means you won’t get $100 million for having the wrong foot amputated.

  17. Ruh ro…looks like NOW just realized they’re getting the “shaft”

    http://www.now.org/news/blogs/index.php/sayit/2009/11/07/call-now-women-s-rights-and-lives-are-on-the-line

  18. Boehner is such a prick. (pun intended)

    • Indeed but I hear 5 or 6 Republicans are voting Present on the Stupak amendment so it doesn’t pass.

  19. The Congressional phone lines are totally overwhelmed. Keep trying till you get through. I think we may be having an effect. Get the menfolk to call to — or no sex till they do. Mine complied post-haste. He wanted his Saturday night special.

  20. Finally, Boehner shuts up. Dingell up now.

  21. why do the Catholic Bishops get any say in our country? Can’t they just move to Vatican city and be as misogynist as they want to be and out of OUR country?

    • better question, why are the US Congress critters even listening to them? aren’t they sworn to uphold the constitution which has an establishment clause?

      • It’s like we’re going back in time. When I first moved to Boston more than 40 years ago, the Church had a lobbying office in the state house. I guess the House of Representatives should open one for them now.

      • It is surprising that anyone outside of PA and MA is listening to them, especially since whatever money the Catholics used to have is now going to fund legal settlements for all the little boys that were molested. Personally, I am outraged that we aren’t stripping the RCs of their tax-exempt status.

    • The Bishops would probably love to turn us into another Ireland, where the Church still controls the school system, divorce was illegal until 1996, and of course abortion is prohibited. For decades, thousands of Irish women have been going to Britain every year to get abortions. They are there “visiting relatives”.

  22. BB–no tv here. What’s going on right now?

  23. omigosh, my congressman Cao is said to be the only republican that’s going to break ranks on this bill as long as the stupak amendment holds … speaking of some one who was almost a priest and does whatever the archbishop tells him to do

  24. I’ve been out of touch all day. I still don’t get why THIS amendment of all of them gets the debate and attention.

    • pandering to the fetus fetishists

    • It’s the only amendment Pelosi would allow. At first she wasn’t going to allow any amendments, which would have meant no Stupak stupidity. It also meant no Weiner vote on UHC and no Kucinich vote on allowing states to have UHC if desired. Weiner and Kucinich agreed, but then Nancy cut them off at the knees and allowed Stupak anti-abortion amendment. I can’t believe I ever considered myself a Democrat. These people are all representing no one but themselves. Why are they wasting our time and money in Washington? It’s all about what they want, not what we want.

      • Nancy pelousy is worthless as a woman and as a leader. How could she allow this??? Trying to stay in the good graces of the Pope?

        • anything to get the health bill through so Obama gets a win … that’s the bottom line … everything else is irrelevant

let me tell you the way this is going, I’ll be surprised if the Dems hold a majority in either house or senate by the time the midterm elections come through

they’re selling out every one to just get a win, same thing they did with that watered down expensive excuse of a stimulus bill, and i agree that it’s probably timed to dump pork into the right congressman’s district come the election rather than front ended for jobs for people …

          • I’m not going to vote for any politician that votes for this POS bill. I just wish that I lived in Pelousy’s district so that I could vote against her. What a corrupt person. She is a woman and a democrat. Oops, she is an Obamacrat. I have steam coming out of my ears.

    • But Weiner couldn’t get 20 minutes. Who controls the House again?

  25. the votes just holding there … 218 to pass and it looks like it has with 240

  26. mostly republicans voting yes … 176 of them

  27. looks like its passed

  28. Now that the Stupak amendment is part of the bill, will the Progressive Caucus kill it? Hah.

  29. Do we all get free trips to Italy now that we’ve been incorporated into the Holy See?

  30. FDL reports 63 “Democrats” voted in favor of the Stupak amendment. No names yet. There were a whole lot more reasons besides Hillary that we became PUMAs. So much for the part of the Democratic convention platform that said Dems would support women’s reproductive and health rights. Apparently whoever wrote that part didn’t consult with Obama or Rahm.

    • I am predicting right now, that will be the excuse. Only 63 of us voted for it! Blame the Republicans!

      • That would be interesting, except that a so-called Democrat proposed the f–ing amendment. Someone at FDL is proposing that we flood the Congress with coat hangers!!!

        • Oh, yeah, that’s a good idea. I have few wire ones since we stopped most of the drycleaning (trying to save), but I imagine I can dig one up.

      • Of course that will be the excuse. But I’ll bet if 20 of those republicans had voted No, 20 more democrats would have voted Yea.

  31. I can’t watch that any more … they sell out to those religious nuts every single time just to push through something

  32. How can I be so unsurprised but totally shocked at the same time?

  33. Any woman who thinks this will go away in a final bill is kidding themselves.

Any woman is is not incensed at this should be ashamed and exiled from our gender.

  34. NOW should run women in every one of those 65 Dems’ race at the very least symbolically

  35. @Fempeace: Bad day x2, and while y’all were distracted by Stupak, Obama about to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. http://tinyurl.com/yl48rf8

  36. What’s going on now? Did they recess?

    • they’re celebrating of course. nothing like a big FU to the wimmens to get them in a party mood.

      • Did they practice a dance routine for the occasion? 99 Problems would certainly be appropriate here.

  37. The bill has passed the house. Our rights are under the bus.

  38. Well, the refrain has started. Over on TL, poor deluded Jeralyn wants to talk about the bad, bad, bad Republicans and how it’s all their fault. Some people in comments are telling her to get a clue.

Women need to WAKE THE FUCK UP. It’s The DEMOCRATIC party that has more power now than ever before – they are COMPLETELY in charge. They can do whatever they want. And they are FUCKING YOU OVER without even blinking. And they are dead certain that you will walk into the booth and punch that “D” every damn time – no worries.

WAKE THE FUCK UP. Don’t pick up the dirty socks, then whine and bitch about how you always have to pick up the dirty socks. STOP doing it. Period. STOP voting for these assholes.

  39. do you think if there was a hooker strike in Washington until a decent health care was passed it would help?
may axis sally pelosi rot in hell. As the first woman speaker she is a disgrace. Any women that votes for her in the future is the enemy of all women.

WOMEN WITH INTELLIGENCE AND EXPERIENCE,MEN WHO SUPPORT THEM AND COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY ALWAYS

    PUMAS,BUBBAS,EQUALISTS AND THOSE PEOPLE RULE

  40. Well, Dakinikat, seems your rep. was the only Repub to vote for the final bill.

  41. I wish I could say that I was shocked, but I can’t. I knew who these dicks were when they were calling Hillary Alex from fatal attraction. I knew who they were when they were shouting, “Why won’t this stupid bitch quit,” and I knew who they were when they were calling Sarah Palin “Bible Spice.” They haven’t changed.

People all over facebook are celebrating right now. Do they even know what passed?

    • No. They don’t know what passes and worse you might be able to explain it to them in a week’s time.

    • People all over facebook? No, doubt they have any idea what is in the bill. They just think Obama “won” something.

Sort of like the bimbo watching the basketball game and squealing, “Ooooo, did we get a touchdown? Yaay!”

    • People all over facebook are celebrating right now. Do they even know what passed?

Of course not. They’re part of the herd of sheep who think “Democrats good, Republicans bad”. They haven’t figured out yet that they’re *all* bad.

      • On my twitter, at least one person was excited to see how pissed the Reps were going to be to see the dems had passed “Universal Healthcare..” They were tucking in for Fox News and everything. I proceeded to tell them exactly why that was ridiculous. The Stupak Amendment renders everything this bill could have been null & void.

    • No, and when they find out how it’s going to affect them they’re going to be outraged. Too late!

    • The ignorance of many people with college and advanced degrees still astounds me a year after Obama was elected. It just shows that one can be educated while being incredible uninformed and ignorant about important issues that affect our own welfare and security.

  42. The Dems are dead to me.

  43. Women everywhere gave these Fckrs an opening to screw us all over and not blink an eye.

“where else are you gonna go, huh? We’ll call you traitorous ratfucking republicans if you even think about voting against a Dem.”

  44. Dems who voted for the Stupak amendment to restrict women’s rights.

    http://www.openleft.com/diary/15915/dems-who-voted-for-the-stupak-amendment-to-restrict-womens-rights

    • Oy, my Dem Rep. Baron “I’m For A Public Option Unless I Have To Vote For It” Hill was among the dirty little Blue Dogs who voted for the Stupid Amendment.

Come 2010, I’ll have the exciting choice between supporting him and a frothing-at-the-mouth Right-Wing Nutcase.

What a great country we live in.

      • At least you don’t have Mike “holier-that-thou” Pence representing you. My parents are stuck with him.

        • I love the way Pence got all choked up and emotional giving his little speech on the amendment tonight. Obviously, he’s been watching too much Glenn Beck.

  45. The roll call vote totals are up on Thomas now. Kucinich and Eric Massa, two Dems who voted against Stupak, also voted against the final bill. Appears they are the only non-Blue Dogs to vote against the bill. Kudos to the two men with principles.

    • Their votes weren’t needed. Once the tally hit 218 I’m sure Nancy gave the rest of her shock troops a bye to vote No.

      • I don’t think so. Given their placement in the alphabet, I think they had to vote their conscience. Nancy already knew about the Blue Dogs. People like Artur Davis has even published his opposition on his congressional website. Dennis Kucinich has made it pretty clear that he thinks this bill sucks. Massa was a pleasant surprise.

        • I’m sorry to be so jaded, but I don’t think they would have done it if they weren’t sure it would pass anyway.

          • Naw. Kucinich votes against quite a bit of their BS. He couldn’t give a shit what Nancy and co. think. He’s been saying for days that he’ll vote against it if they refused to let the robust public option or the single payer states amendment see the light of day

          • Anything’s possible, of course, but on Massa’s website he specifically says he wants to close the Medicare Part D doughnut hole. It’s my understanding that this bill would help to accomplish that. So, in Massa’s case, I think it was something else. With Dennis you never know. Generally, he stands on principle, but he did say that he was unlikely to vote for the bill if his amendment wasn’t included (allowing states to opt for UHC apart from any Federal bill).

          • I know he’s been saying that, but I just can’t get over the primary thing. He proved to me there that when the party really needs him, he’s there, principles be damned. He also proved to me he doesn’t care about health care and is as much responsible for this mess as anyone.

        • Artur Davis was the first congressman to endorse Obama. He’s running for governor next year and was given a bye earlier to vote No. I saw that this morning.

  46. I love Hoyer giving all the glory to Pelosi. Girl, he is setting you up for the fall. He knows this isn’t what your constituents want.

  47. Well RD & Co. It’s just unbelievable. It really is.
All I can say is that here at the Conf, well, we saw things coming but certainly not this out of Dems, no?

Not Dems, the party that was for women and minorities. Hmmm.
I feel so sad for all the back alley abortions and the women who will be forced into having them. Ugh. Disgusting. Really disgusting — from the 70’s to this? Unreal.

Hillary was our choice for more than one reason. Women’s rights were so huge with her, weren’t they?

    • Hillary was the only reliable vote in the Senate to never back away from women’s and children’s rights.

      • Sigh. These are the times when I think about “what if” scenarios. But I guess what’s done is done. The only thing I find productive is to plan ahead for 2012 and what we can do to stop another Dubya or Obama from occupying the White House.

  48. My blue-dog POS congressman (Cardoza) voted “yes” on the Stupak amendment

    • That title couldn’t be more appropriate unless it was:

“House Democrats pass crappy healthcare reform for men”

    • my sentiments exactly…

you know bb, between the soldier ptsd and this?
dunno — add in the economic crisis and you are really going to see deep deep problems in the national psyche — I say that as an MA, only but — ?

I’m afraid it isn’t going to be pretty, at all.
How different things would have been with Hillary or McC.
What a mess. What a mess. Tragic is what it is — just tragic –

  49. Darcy Burner says progressives should not vote for the bill if Stupak amendment passes.

    http://crooksandliars.com/john-amato/darcy-burner-says-progressive-should-no

  50. We need a new thread. SoD, are you posting yours?

  51. Bedtime for me. Wish I had a good book, because I’ll probably just sit in bed and brood. Very depressed even though I didn’t have high hopes to begin with. Nite all. Thanks for the threads.

  52. Here’s the final vote tallies
