From the Chicago Tribune:
Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care.
The news media swoons in admiration — one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: “Why don’t you show some respect?!” The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader’s origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: “Embracing change is never easy.”
So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait — did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who’s come here to eat us?
Welcome to ABC’s “V,” the most fascinating and bound to be the most controversial new show of the fall television season. Nominally a rousing sci-fi space opera about alien invaders bent on the conquest (and digestion) of all humanity, it’s also a barbed commentary on Obamamania that will infuriate the president’s supporters and delight his detractors.
If Obama was really a space lizard that would explain a lot. But it would also mean the Birthers were right, and that’s just not possible. The Birthers actually make Obots seem almost rational by comparison.
Almost.

Don’t know about the lizard part but I read this in a comment at Liberal Rapture and it sounds plausible, FWIW.
A carpetbagger Dem vs. a carpetbagger conservative? Don’t they have any real people in NY-23?
nope only alien space lizards live in NY-23
Did you watch? I did, and loved it. However, it stooped to “hatemongering” (sorry but the word fits) pitting the aliens touting hope and change against the Catholic priest, alone in his skepticism (the Pope has accepted “them”) and an FBI agent (can you get any more mainstream for adversaries?)
There’s the journalist who can’t resist the call of being V’s media whore; the teens who fake mom’s signature to join “the movement” (uh-oh! someone’s gonna be in trouble!), the fiance who is an ex-V incognito trying to re-integrate with society. I think O has inspired a new genre of polarized, violent drama. Can’t you see the reality tv shows that will come next?
Makes me wish I had a honkin huge HDTV.
patience Grasshopper.after cash for clunkers. now cash for appliances T.V.s gotta be the next cash for clunkers lol.
The President’s supporters are not bright enough to be infuriated. Obot Twitter is running heavily to “Awesome show! Awesome!”
Does it count as postpartisanship if your targets are too dumb to realize they’re being mocked?
I saw a couple of Failbots claiming they spent the nineties defending Hillary from the same kind of attacks being made on Michelle O.
I must have missed something – when was MO accused of being a murderous lesbian?
My god! Look at the war Fox has declared on Obama! This kind of vicious treatment is unprescedented in American political history!
The Big Dawg didn’t have to deal with FOX during his first term. Obama has it much worse.
Besides, the Clinton’s deserved all the trouble they got.
no but I don’t remember anybody calling a Hillary an ugly pie eating bitch either. Or comparing her to Marie Antoinette
Who said that?
Nobody on this blog.
BTW – is comparing a First Lady (or any woman) to Marie Antoinette some outrageous crime?
Marie Antoinette was simply a convenient scapegoat for the excesses of the aristocracy. She was foreign, female, and extravagantly stylish. She was also a lonely young girl who was thrust into the spotlight way too young.
It’s very common for wives to get scapegoated for the sins & failings of the man in power.
Historical figures are always more complex than the caricatures they are remembered as.
But comparing people to others (both good and bad) is pretty common.
Is there a list of people we can compare MO to in a negative way without implicating sexism or racism?
Are we not allowed to mock and ridicule MO?
I don’t know about pie eating, but she’s been called an ugly bitch approximately oh, 67 billion times. And if she’s ever been in the public vicinity of pie, I’m sure that worked its way in as well.
And 66 billion of those instances were televised symposia (is it symposia?) with the entire national press corps. “Ugly bitch or the ugliest bitch?”
If there is any insulting, offensive, and/or derogatory word, term or expression in any known language that hasn’t been thrown at Bill and Hillary I’d be surprised.
That includes the ones that that don’t even apply to them.
they accused her of murder. They said she was a lesbian. Of course they compared her to Marie Antoinette. Hillary had it much worse and her attacks were in the main stream media.
They just don’t compare her to Marie Antoinette, they call her Michelle Antoinette … and it has something to do with her caviar and champagne snack she had in a NY hotel when on the campaign trail, the expensive beef served at the WH, and the fact she wears $500 hideous sneakers to a homeless event.
Hillary was called ugly and bitch all the time.
My above comment is not referring to people on this blog.
I missed the new V, hopefully I’ll catch it next week. Ioved the old V that was on NBC many moons ago & watche faithfully. Hopefully this new one will be jusrt as good
I loved the original V.
I recorded this one but haven’t watched yet. Glad to hear the good reviews.
well let me tell ya..i,m about V d out. watched the movie and sequel the other night then they had it on all day for two days DVR.d all of them i,m working my way through them
after i watch all the old ones will watch the new one
I must have been “on the wagon” regarding my tv addiction during the first V, as I never saw it… what years did it air?
In general, I’m not a huge scifi fan, and avoid violent shows, but the political satire drew me in….
“But it would also mean the Birthers were right, and that’s just not possible. The Birthers actually make Obots seem almost rational by comparison.”
Can I try to clear something up without being banned? (I realize that the proprietor and moderators want to avoid being tarred with the “crazy” brush.)
Birthers come in several flavors. They know that Obama was never vetted, has sealed all his records, and has spent around a million dollars so far fending off attempts to get him to produce legal papers. They wonder what he is trying so strenuously to hide. How come nobody knows at which hospital he was born? Some of them hare after red herrings (e.g., Kenyan birth certificate) likely planted by disinformation agents. Nevertheless, it is a fact that the computer document posted on-line is not the actual, contemporaneous birth certificate, and claims that it is are themselves disinformation.
A second group can more properly be called “dualers.” They argue that Obama may well have been born in Hawaii but his birthplace is irrelevant: Obama at birth inherited his father’s nationality as well as his mother’s, and thus as a binational with dual loyalties cannot be a natural born citizen, as the Constitution requires for presidential eligibility. They ask: does the Constitution matter or not?
Birthers are treated worse than 9/11 truthers, so I understand this site’s wanting to avoid the shaming, but calling them crazy is unwarranted. They deserve your silence rather than your ridicule.
Barack Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961. People who are convinced he was born somewhere else are insane.
People who think that because his father was a citizen of Kenya that makes him ineligible to be POTUS are clueless.
It’s not just that the “Dualers” are ignorant of the law, it’s that they are certain they know what the law is but they are wrong.
Barack Obama was born in Queen’s Hospital in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. So sayeth the birth announcement in the Honolulu Star Bulletin of the time. Information for vital statistics info is provided by the hospitals. Sheesh. Stop already.
A slight O/T…but the half brother of Obama has written a book about their abusive father. What I found interesting is that after Obama Sr divorced Stanley Ann, O Sr. met and married another American woman that he met at Harvard. He took her back to Kenya where she bore 2 sons. ( Half brothers to Barack.)
Was it a habit to marry American college girls and then go back to Kenya and have children. Not so unusual after all.
The complete lack of supporting evidence proves that the conspiracy goes to the highest levels of government!
gmanedit –
I think we should be more concerned about Obama’s unwillingness and legal fights to fight access to any and all of his records or any documentation that could substantiate any of his self-made claims. Morevoer, I’m concerned that Obama was granted a meeting with SCOTUS which was held in their secret conference chambers before he was inaugurated and that one of his first acts as POTUS was to ensure that FOIA requests about his history could not be granted without WH approval. These facts in themselves make me deeply suspicious about what he is trying to hide; although I don’t think he was born on foreign soil. It would be better if the birthers/dualists, etc. would focus on those facts, than trying to fight this issue in court since it is proving futile — the courts reject these suits summarily — and does make them look a bit loony. I’m also interested in what D’Onofrio claimed about Chester Arthur, that he was actually our first “illegible” president due to dual citizenship since his father was a Canadian citizen. But it would be helpful to at least to see some evidence about this, until then he looks loony too.
I don’t actually give a shit about where Obama was born and what his nationality is (but then, I’m Canadian). But I really do resent all of the vitriolic “those nutsy birthers” rhetoric around here. Since when is it insane to question the conventional wisdom about something? Nope, as someone who was labeled an insane old racist bitch for supporting Hillary, who was totally MAKING UP all of that misogyny stuff during the primaries, I think it’s absolutely justifiable to make assumptions about how stupid and crazy and reactionary those nutbag birthers are. Because, you know, that’s just CRAZY to think that Obama would lie and cheat.
I didn’t assume anything. I listened to their arguments, considered their evidence and read the cases they cite as legal authority. I spent hours discussing the subject with some of them.
Birthers are a few french fries short of a Happy Meal.
Yes. And every group is totally homogeneous. PUMAs were, right?
I’m a birther agnostic, myself. I don’t think that this thing can be known at this point, too many people have too many dogs in the fight right now. If Obama has nothing to hide, he still benefits from people shutting up about it, and people would still benefit from spreading these rumors. The inverse is even more true. Forty years from now, when Obama is retired or dead, maybe then we’ll know for sure. But I don’t trust anyone to tell the truth or provide actual undoctored evidence for either side at this point.
My understanding is that the law on “natural born citizen” is not settled. Can you point me to where it says what the law is? Thanks.
The Dualers are using a definition of “natural born citizen” that appears nowhere in any statute or controlling case decision.
Our Founding Fathers put the term in the Constitution but didn’t define it. There have been questions raised about whether the children of US citizens born abroad are natural or naturalized citizens, but anyone born in the United States is a natural citizen.
Despite the Dualers claims that their definition is “the law” no court has agreed. All cases that have been filed have been summarily rejected.
The American people knew that Obama’s father was not a US citizen when they elected him last year.
I’d say the issue is settled.
The Constitution matters, but why is the “natural born citizen” thing any more important than the reqirement that the Prez and Veep be from different states? Why wasn’t there this much angst over Bush and Cheney? The courts demonstrated there that they don’t take these requirements seriously at all.
Read the 14th Amendment, and then read the cases that interpret it. When SCOTUS finally accepted that the government could do something about discrimination and segregation they had to use the Commerce Clause, because previous case decisions gutted the 14th.
As one SCOTUS justice said about the finality of their decisions, “We’re not last because we’re right, we’re right because we’re last.”
As I read in a fortune cookie, “SCOTUS will not be overturning the results of a national election on the basis of anything trivial any time soon. They’ve been known to overturn the results because they voted for the other guy, but as to being 34 and 360 days or living in the same state or some definition of citizenship, Fuggedaboutit.”
Is comparing O to a space lizard not an insult to space lizards?
I heard E.T. is going to give “major speech” on space relations next week. Should be good. I think Elliot wrote it.
LOL
I think Mars is on the brink of O-mania! O is the first prez who is finally prepared to reach across planets! I think he might be in line for the intergalactical Nobel Price!
lol.
As a sci-fi fan, I am elated. Too bad this V is actually a step back from the original, why with their terrorists, FBI agents and less heart than the original. But if the lizzards – Obama or not – eat live rodents on screen, I’ll watch (the actors are not bad either)

I love Larry King. Used to stay up late to listen to him on overnight radio when I was a kid. He was witty, irreverent, endlessly entertaining. But in recent years on CNN, he has turned into a sort of space lizard. His show is spooky, the parade of strange guests and their strange stories. The Jerry Springer Show on Nyquil. I don’t know if CNN has become an agent of V, whatever that might mean, but CNN ratings are so bad right now, they can’t possibly survive much longer.
Thing is they had a chance to be what they should be: a serious news network with a discerning and critical eye on our politics, economy and all else. A leader of the fourth estate. But with the election, they blew it. Fair and balanced my ass.
Dunno about V but I know the Saudis own a controlling share in it for years and years…Survival of news outlets is not predicated on ratings, but on the purses of those whose interests they serve.
So the Saudis were among those behind Obama. No wonder he bowed.
Do you know who has a controlling share in BBC World?
I guess Alex was unaware of our zero tolerance policy for birthers.
Tell you what Alex, win a court case on the issue and I’ll lift the ban.
Get a real judge to agree with you, then come on back.
A real judge with a real law school diploma and a real courtroom.
Until then, happy trails!
Interesting, how the real Resistance seems to have disappeared from the teevee version. It’s the FBI fighting for what’s real, huh? No PUMAs anywhere, right?
The Great Forgetting. It didn’t even take a year this time. ( on forgetting women in history. An interesting book on forgetting women in the Polish Solidarity movement, Solidarity’s Secret.)
(For some reason that first link didn’t come through & I can’t seem to edit the comment. Gah. It was: Historiann on forgetting women in history.

Looks like a pretty good series so far. And of course I love the connection obamamania. They did in fact hint at it in the show, with comments about universal healthcare among a few other subtleties. But of course the main issue of unquestioned worship of a new unknown is the main thing.
The scene of the leader giving a major interview was priceless. She said to the interviewer just make sure you say or ask nothing that would show her in an unfriendly light. The reporter said that’s not the way we do things. She said you’d like to further your career wouldn’t you, and the interview won’t happen otherwise. The reporter gave in. And then in the interview she pretended he could ask any question because there were no secrets, etc. It was priceless.
Of course their idea of “under the bus” is being eaten.
LOL. I can’t wait to see the remake; loved the original. Still haven’t read “It Can’t Happen Here”
Yeah, Tapper says on FB that scene reminded him of someone we know.
Judge Land and now judge Carter, smack down the crazies (case dismissed), poor little Birthers.
Not even “Fake News” Bill O’Reilly believes the crazies, how funny.

To all the birthers in La, La Land, it is on you to prove to all of us that your assertion is true (TOUGH WHEN YOU KEEP LOSING CASES), if there are people who were there and support your position then show us the video (everyone has a price), either put up or frankly shut-up.
In my opinion the Republican Party has been taken over the most extreme religious right (people who love to push their beliefs on others while trying to take away the rights of those they just hate) and that is who they need to extract from their party if they real want to win. Good Luck, because as they said in WACO, “We Ain’t Coming Out”.
I heard that she now wants to investigate the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC).
I wonder if she is a mail order bride, just like her law degree? She is perfect reporter material for “Fake News”, where unfounded rumors and innuendo reign supreme , unlike a our US courts of law, where you need to present documented facts, not half baked lies (prepare for more failures).
A lawyer, dentist, realtor and black belt, WOW I must say a JACK of all trades master of none.
Ummmmmmmmm. You have to love those Hollywood writers, no? Who would have thought. Does Oprah know about this? Maybe it was financed by Harpo Productions. Now that would be funny.
Pretty ridiculous, but great picture.
