Village ‘witches’ beaten in India

Five women were paraded naked, beaten and forced to eat human excrement by villagers after being branded as witches in India’s Jharkhand state.

Local police said the victims were Muslim widows who had been labelled as witches by a local cleric.

Swiss tipped US to Polanski trip

The arrest of Roman Polanski in his decades-old child sex case was set in motion last month by Swiss authorities, who informed federal officials that the fugitive director was expected in Zurich for a film festival and asked if the U.S. would be submitting a request for his arrest, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

  1. Meh:

Maddow Finally Apologizes for Saying Limbaugh Wanted MLK’s Assassin to Get Medal of Honor

With all the shit that Big Fat Idiot has said over the years they had to make stuff up?

    • That’s because he’s threatening libel. This is our new “free press”: they completely fabricated Limbaugh’s “racist” statements, taken from some hack book, and didn’t bother to fact check any of it. CNN, MSNBC and others repeated it as fact–but notice they have time to fact check an SNL skit. I can’t believe journalism has come to this. Limbaugh is a big fat idiot, but as we saw last year, the utter lack of accountability and professionalism is a danger to us all.

  2. With friends like these:

South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint is denouncing remarks by two Republican officials in his state that were published in a controversial weekend op-ed which included a Jewish stereotype.

The piece, written by South Carolina County GOP chairmen James Ulmer and Edwin Merwin, was intended to defend DeMint’s position against congressional earmarks, but it included a line describing Jews as penny-pinchers.

They actually meant it as a compliment

  3. Remember the two twits who hung an effigy of Sarah Palin from their roof last year?

This year it’s a bloody and dismembered Carrie Prejean.

You do realise that when the dodgers lose to the PHILLIES, you will have to learn the Mummers Strut.

    • I don’t like the Phillies, Yankees or Angels.

I hate the Dodgers. When their season is over, I can quit watching baseball until next year.

      • Are the Angels still in it? Did they win last night?

        • Ooops, I didn’t make it to the end of the post before commenting….

It’s looks like it will be Phillies-Yankees, so I guess I’m a Phillies fan.

    • Never mind…

      • SOD, it’s simple. They need that money for the bonuses see?

      • Or we could all pitch in with a 1/4 % or 1/2% sales tax. Seems with 300 million consumers that would more than do the trick.

        • I want to add that with our government and our politicians it is always about false choices. Health care or jobs? Environment or jobs? All of these are false choices.

  8. I was thinking about getting the new Barnes and Noble e-reader, The Nook. Now I’m not so sure. This thing is going to be able to detect when a customer walks into a B&N store!

The Nook also has software that will detect when a consumer walks into a store so that it can push out coupons and other promotions like excerpts from forthcoming books or suggestions for new reading. While in stores, Nook owners will be able to read any e-book through streaming software.

    • Glenn, the IG also addresses the false credit ratings in this piece:

IG harshly criticizes Treasury’s handling of $700B bailout program

Neil Barofsky, the special inspector general over the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), as the financial bailout is known officially, criticized the Treasury Department for failing to require banks to detail exactly how they are using the money. Barofsky also criticized the Treasury Department for not being more forthright about how and why it selected the first nine recipients of TARP money.

Barofsky said the Treasury Department decided to deny his office access to the “books and records” that affiliates of fund managers keep under the public-private investment partnership program. The program is meant to facilitate the purchase of troubled and toxic assets weighing down bank balance sheets.

The Treasury Department, in response to the report, said that it is committed to transparency. [huh?!]

  15. If you want to know how much you love Obama then take this test:

    http://myfuturespouse.net/take.php?quiz=69

I scored a 4% which seems kinda high.

    • I got 4% too. ;-)

      • I couldn’t complete the quiz, because I would have had to pick one of the cable news channels as my “favorite.” There wasn’t any choice for none of the above or I don’t watch cable news.

    • WTF? I scored a 32% and I answered every single question in the most nihilstic way possible. Maybe because I knew what kind of dog they chose (because no one would shut up about it for weeks)?

      How about this question?
Would you support a constitutional amendment to allow Obama run for a third term?

I will absolutely leave the country if that is even a remote possibility.

    • I knew the dog… so I was at 4% too

    • I got 26%, which is not accurate, but that’s the internet for ya.

    • It’s rigged, of course.

    • Rigged test — they didn’t have any: “5. I’d puke.” answers.

  16. Moonie marriage mania – 40,000 get hitched at same time.

  17. A little ditty in honor of the one-eyed wanderer:

  18. Wow, myiq. That Malcolm X article was a real eye-opener, at least for me. I had no idea so many names were gay or bi—-not that it matters, cuz I couldn’t care less, really, about other people’s sex lives.

But the suppression of same in the Black culture (what’s the big deal?) surprised me. I understand the “down low” phrase, but the rewriting or suppression of factual truth about leaders’ lives is mystifying. Not sure I understand why those facts are shameful for them…..it ain’t no big deal.

But thank you for posting the article. It was quite illuminating.

    • It’s the religion thing Mary. Difficult for many to square the whole Leviticus translation–which according to gay black Republican Harvard Divinity Minister/Professor (how’s that for an interesting hybrid?) Peter Gomes was based on the tribal culture of the time who were desperately concerned with survival of the tribe (ie: procreation). It’s also been translated how many times by how many people? Don’t get me started.

Public figures are also thinking about their careers and any adverse effects trying to attract a broad constituency.

    • The sexuality of all of those folks in the article, excepting Malcolm X, is well known in the Black community though it’s not shouted from the rooftops and the evidence the author provides for Malcolm X’s bisexuality seems questionable. Also, the “down low” is nothing more than the Black version of “in the closet”.

  19. Ya think?:

Excuses wearing thin for Obama, media pals

You’d think it’s October 2008, the final month in the Obama presidential candidacy, rather than October 2009, nine months into the Obama presidency. Yet the Obama White House is in full campaign mode — maybe because it needs to mask the shortcomings of the Obama presidency.

  20. Woke up to this, this morning- Mervyn King the governor of the Bank of England is extremely angry at the too big to fails getting big bonuses and no regulation.

In an outspoken speech last night, in which he made his clearest call yet for the banks to be broken up, King warned that the British people will be paying for the cost of the financial crisis for a generation.

“To paraphrase a great wartime leader, never in the field of financial endeavour has so much money been owed by so few to so many. And, one might add, so far with little real reform,” he said.

King’s comments came as several banks, which either weathered last year’s maelstrom, or survived only because of big government bailouts, are preparing to pay out billions of pounds in bonuses.

  21. Dems are talking about “Medicare for Everyone,” According to The Hill.

    http://thehill.com/homenews/house/64029-medicare-for-everyone

They seem to think this is a new idea, because it just dawned on them. Why do we have such stupid people running our country?

  22. It is so painful to read about the Indian “witches” and the charlatan who denounced them.

Yes, by all means, we must play fair when it comes to fugitive child molesters.

  25. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs refers to “Beck” and “Hannity” as the reasons why the Obama administration is criticizing Fox News.

[I'm just going to leave little opinion droppings behind all your posts myiq :) ]

Their whiny hypocrisy is so pathetic. Tweety & Olbermann anyone?! They only cry if it’s a ranter that doesn’t genuflect appropriately.

  26. After watching Frontline’s “The Warning” last night, I nominate Brooksley Born for a NPP in economics. She blew the whistle
on Greenspan, Geithner, Ruben, Summers et al long ago. I bet Dak has covered this already and I missed it. Ms. Born predicted the devastation long ago because of the questionable derivatives – there was a meltdown back in late 1998. That time, the big banks had to pay for it themselves – this time, the American tax payers paid.

For Ms. Born’s efforts she lost her job after there was a Congressional hearing. Those testifying against her are the people in charge of the Treasury now. They made her life living hell, just like what they did to Hillary.

but, but, but Greenspan admits he was wrong. So comforting especially since we have the same thugs that orchestrated that meltdown now in control. His Oiliness is paying them trillions. All those idgit Obits saying “look at the money”… never questioning why such a unqualified candidate would garner the attention. Stupid Obits.

Anyone got a score card – the banks, WS, Insurance companies versus middle class, racial lines, LGBT, elderly…….. did someone say he can’t show favorism to any one group??? Doh, he sure isn’t shy about some groups is he?

What’s our options? -0- Except the next election. Sorry for the rant, OT and probably already discussed. I am so sick of discussing “how to make him do the right thing” – it’s baked in the cake – done deal. If the elected officials who foisted this POS on to us are re-elected – then there is no hope. I went from watching the “news” 24/7 for years to 3 minutes a day – if my stomach can take it. I prefer pre-digested BS these days.

Reid is “thinking” about “talking” about a public option – how many years has this weasle been “thinking” about taking some action against the rethugs? What does it take to get rid of this vermin? I had hoped to have a new vocabulary post-Bu$hit. Same ole same ole.

  27. Daily Presidential Tracking Poll

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 27% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -13. That’s just a point above the lowest level ever recorded for this President. It’s also the sixth straight day in negative double digits, matching the longest such streak

    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

  28. I am so sick of discussing “how to make him do the right thing” – it’s baked in the cake – done deal

The whole idea of holding his feet to the fire seemed to me so pointless, that it made me stop considering TL to be a serious pol site a long, long time ago.

  29. Remember when Helen Thomas asked Gibbs: “Is he going to fight for the public option?” After Gibbs continued to hedge, she said, “He’s not going to get it.”
Gibbs: “Then why do you keep asking me?”
HT: “Because I want your conscience to bother you.”

Obama is taking a break from health care:

Obama Takes a Health Care Hiatus

WASHINGTON — As Congressional leaders and White House officials huddle behind closed doors to settle their differences on health care legislation, one of the most powerful voices in the debate — President Obama’s — has grown noticeably quieter.

The idea, aides said, is for the president to take a breather while Democrats resolve their internal conflicts, so he can come back strong with a fresh sales pitch when the legislation moves closer to floor votes.

Mr. Axelrod would not say whether an Oval Office address was under consideration now, but he made clear that Mr. Obama would hardly be silent for long.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/21/us/21memo.html?_r=1&ref=politics

  30. Is it wrong to want to nom nom nom that adorable crying baby?

  31. Wish me luck, the 12 year old tested positive for flu last night at ER(they gave him 600 mls of fluid and some zofran and toradol along with a rx for tamiflu) and this morning the 17 year old was running a fever.

  32. 12 dimensional chess according to politico.

Obama aides are using their powerful White House platform, combined with techniques honed in the 2008 campaign, to cast some of the most powerful adversaries as out of the mainstream and their criticism as unworthy of serious discussion.

    snip…
The campaign underscores how deeply political the Obama White House is in its daily operations — with a strong focus on redrawing the electoral map and discrediting the personalities and ideas that have powered the conservative movement over the past 20 years.

This determination has manifested itself in small ways: This president has done three times as many fundraisers as President George W. Bush had at this point in his term. And in large ones: Beginning with their contretemps with Limbaugh last winter, Obama’s most important advisers miss few opportunities for public and highly partisan shots at his most influential critics.

    Is it working?

White House officials point to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll to argue the answer is emphatically yes. Only 20 percent of those surveyed identified themselves as Republicans, the lowest in 26 years of asking the question.
As bad as that number is, the news about independents is arguably worse. A staggering 83 percent of all independents surveyed said they don’t trust Republicans to make the right decisions.

Course, what I noticed was that the president had done three times as many fundraisers as President George W. Bush had at this point in his term.

  33. Jeralyn is gonna be disappointed:

Roman Polanski may return to the United States to confront charges against him after a Swiss court rejected his appeal to be released from jail to house arrest, according to one of his French lawyers.

    • I don’t know but this is starting to smell like Polanski did something in Switzerland and they didn’t have enough evidence to arrest and prosecute him there so they decided to give him to us. I think there is more here than meets the eye.

  34. A private security guard at Newark Liberty International Airport has been arrested Wednesday on charges of threatening President Barack Obama.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/10/21/new-jersey-security-guard-allegedly-threatened-obama/

    • I don’t get why anyone would threaten this guy. Not smart and bad for a democracy. Also, I don’t get why people keep bandying the Revo word about. They had a huge thread over at Liberal Rapture that made me very uncomfortable to go to the site. That sort of thing has got to be picked up by the FBI’s data filtering system. I don’t like Obama because he is not liberal enough for my tastes. People keep insinuating that he is the second coming of Lenin, Stalin, Hitler or Mao. This is totally not true. His ideology pretty much mirrors George Bush’s in my opinion.

      • GingerP – i love that you came by my site. Much as I would love to have had a “huge” thread – sadly i rarely garner more than 10-20 comments. Gosh darn it. After a day that post got about 30 comments. Alas, L.R. is still at the kiddie table…though i was one of the first out of the gate to call Obama by his proper name: Fraud.

I did not think the comments about the “revolution” – in response to a reader poll post – were too far afield. It’s a legit question.
