Sunday morning at The Confluence: continental breakfast and some news to chew on

73347767

OK, I got lazy and Rico fell asleep on my couch before I could get him to mix up some of his killer Mimosas so, instead of made-to-order omelets and Belgian Waffles, this morning we’re serving coffee and pastries donuts with your morning news.

For starters, just in case you thought something earth-shattering occurred in the following areas, let me confirm that

The Democrats are still pretending to work on healthcare reform

Michael Jackson is still dead and it just might be a homicide.

Swine flu is still in the news

and

Goldman Sachs is still running the world

Now, what else is going on? – there’s so much more after the fold!

National and World News

SarahPalin_01First up, let’s talk some Sarah P.

Is Sarah Palin setting aside party affiliation and supporting candidates on their merits and not the letter that follows their name? Maybe.

The former Republican vice-presidential nominee and heroine to much of the GOP’s base said in an interview she views the electorate as embattled and fatigued by nonstop partisanship, and she is eager to campaign for Republicans, independents and even Democrats who share her values on limited government, strong defense and “energy independence.”

“I will go around the country on behalf of candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation,” she said over lunch in her downtown office, 40 miles from her now-famous hometown of Wasilla — population 7,000 — where she began her political career.

Maybe the “independent party” theory being floated is not so far-fetched after all. But then again, she’s probably just sick and tired of the continuous assault of ethics complaints from the Palin-hate crowd

In a statement released late Friday night, Palin’s office announced that two more ethics complaints had been filed against the governor in the week since she made her surprise announcement that she plans to step down later this month -including one complaint filed on Friday.

“Although the governor would not have thought it possible, the latest complaint rises to a new level of absurdity in alleging that she has been paid for interviews that she has given to the news media,” Palin’s chief of staff Mike Nizich said in a release announcing the filing of the recent complaints.

*Big brother is moving full steam ahead in the plan to make every person a 24/7 GPS tracking unit.  The worst part is, hackers have already figured out how to scan and steal this identification information.

Climbing into his Volvo, outfitted with a Matrics antenna and a Motorola reader he’d bought on eBay for $190, Chris Paget cruised the streets of San Francisco with this objective: To read the identity cards of strangers, wirelessly, without ever leaving his car.

It took him 20 minutes to strike hacker’s gold.

Zipping past Fisherman’s Wharf, his scanner detected, then downloaded to his laptop, the unique serial numbers of two pedestrians’ electronic U.S. passport cards embedded with radio frequency identification, or RFID, tags. Within an hour, he’d “skimmed” the identifiers of four more of the new, microchipped PASS cards from a distance of 20 feet.

President Urges Public Patience on Economy

*Obama takes a firm tone in his speech to the people of Ghana:
Barack Obama tells Africa to stop blaming the West for its woes on historic Ghana visit

Adopting a tone his white predecessors never dared employ, the US President told Africa it could no longer blame the West for all its woes.

“Yes, a colonial map that made little sense bred conflict, and the West has often approached Africa as a patron, rather than a partner,” he told the Ghanaian parliament. “But the West is not responsible for the destruction of the Zimbabwean economy over the last decade, or wars in which children are enlisted as combatants.”

Ruh Ro…Congress realizes it can tell the prez to take his signing statements and shove ‘em
Congress Suddenly Remembers It Can Cut Off Funds

Yesterday, the House voted almost unanimously — 429-2 — to negate a signing statement Obama issued that rejected restrictions Congress had placed on funding for the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Obama had claimed the restrictions in the June supplemental spending bill “would interfere with my constitutional authority to conduct foreign relations” and declared that “I will not treat these provisions as limiting my ability to engage in foreign diplomacy or negotiations.”

That an amendment by a Republican — Kay Granger of Texas — would pass a Democratic House with only two dissenting votes was striking in itself. But the Obama administration also got a broader warning during the floor debate, as House Appropriations Chairman David R. Obey of Wisconsin and Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank of Massachusetts said Congress might simply refuse to fund the administration’s requests in the future if it wants to make a fuss about the strings that are attached.

*This is art? Maybe. Artist Simon Faithfull’s “Gravity Sucks” exhibit opened Friday in London. The exhibit’s highlight is a 25 minute film that features and office chair being shot into space.

While captivating at its most basic, physical level, Faithfull’s work also speaks of the futility of human attempts to escape “the trivial, the mundane and the self”. And also of the beauty in the soul’s constant attempts to soar beyond “the forces of everyday reality”.

Travel Ideas

While traveling throughout our great nation this summer you may want to check out some of these unique museums such as the The Spam Museum, in Austin Minnesota,  or the National Museum of Funeral History in Houston, Texas or the favorite of tinfoil hatters like me all across America, the Conspiracy Museum in Dallas Texas.

“By definition, a successful conspiracy leaves no evidence: no umbrella pistol, no microfilm hidden in a pumpkin, no desiccated alien hung in a meat freezer. That makes it difficult to get exhibits for a conspiracy museum. And the Conspiracy Museum in Dallas is not just A conspiracy museum; it’s THE conspiracy museum. Its theme is the uberplot, the bulbous head of the evil octopus whose tentacles reach into every world capital and every corporate boardroom.”

Oddly, the Conspiracy Museum website notes that the museum is currently “closed” and you must “call to verify.” Hmmmm… I wonder what’s up with that?

Also, ever wonder where all of the macaroni art ends up? Well in the Museum of Bad Art of course!

“Since 1994, the Museum of Bad Art has been dedicated to bad art. It is only through the efforts of the worldwide Friends of MOBA that we have been able to carry out our mission: to bring the worst of art to the widest of audiences.”

For information on more unusual museums, check out this post at Mental Floss.

*Still need something to do on your vacation? Why not check out these “Spite Houses” – monuments to that ubiquitous vice of spite.

“For as good as humans can be, we have a far greater capacity to be angry and vengeful. This vengeance takes many forms; some kill, some cheat, some will glue your butt cheeks together while you sleep. But few go as far as erecting a building as a monument to their anger toward another.

This, friends, is what is called a spite house. It doesn’t matter if a spite house is pretty much an unlivable waste of space, that’s beside the point. They’re all about draining tons of cash and time in to a building that may as well be shaped like a hand giving you the middle finger with a pair of testicles hanging off of the wrist.”

  1. Re: Obama’s speech in Ghana: It’s about time somebody said it. He got this one right.

    • Yes he did.

      • What he said was correct, but it’s funny that he grovels and apologizes in so many other foreign states, but gets all righteous and scolds in Ghana.

        • Yea, he bows to the Saudis–who we know have such a stellar human rights record–but scolds in Ghana.

          • I spent 2 years as an American woman in Saudi. Would you please tell me what you know. The years I was there were genuinely comfortable, Saudi men were respectful, their religious laws are a bit restrictive, but no moreso than restrictions and fears here. How does our judicial system, or society look upon abused and/or murdered wives, for instance? I’d be willing to bet that more women (percentage-wise) here are victims of rape, abuse, and discrimination. Difference is, those women know what they aren’t going to be allowed to do….here, people pretend it isn’t happening or isn’t really a problem.

    • I really don’t think so. Many problems in modern Africa come from colonialism.
      From the article:

“Condemning tyrannical African leaders who “enrich themselves” amid the continent’s chronic poverty”

If you were to trace this back to its roots, it comes from the west. During colonization, westerners intentionally kept the majority of africans uneducated, so they wouldn’t rise up against them. This lead to a very small pool of educated africans fit to lead. (under belgian rule, the congo had 13 college educated people in the entire country at its worst.)

With such a small group of leaders, after independence, how could there be anything but corruption? without an informed public, or even enough educated people to have any sort of checks and balances, leaders decided that they could get away with anything they wanted, and most wanted money.

This is not a flaw indigenous to Africa; given the same circumstances, almost any leader would do what they did. Were african leaders corrupt, horrific men who ran their countries into the ground? yes. However they were products of colonial rule, and we can’t whitewash history and pretend like the west had nothing to do with it. (although America never did anything to colonize Africa. If he had said “america” instead of “the west” he would have been right)

      • I’m not here to argue for colonialism, but it’s a mistake to blame it for all the ills of modern Africa. Intertribal atrocities and domestic slavery have plagued the continent for a long, long time. You need to read Paul Theroux’s Dark Star Safari for valuable insights into contemporary Africa, and the origins of its many ills. Theroux believes the West, including the IMF, should just butt out and let Africa heal itself.

        • I actually do think I’ll read that, thanks.
I read one article from the LA times about butting out and letting them heal, but it was written from a lunatic perspective, and it really kind of turned me off from that whole idea. Hopefully this one will be better.

So i guess I’ll read that book and see how my opinion sways.

          • Dark Star is a wonderful book. Paul Theroux is a bit of a curmudgeon, but he was a Peace Corps worker (teacher) in Africa many years ago. He clearly loves the continent, but is also clear eyed about its ills, their sources, and the harm the West continues to do by laying on superficial aid, instead of encouraging Africa to come up with its own solutions in its own way.

    • bout time he got something right.

  2. Mornin’ SOD-all this and donuts too…lots to read.

  3. backatcha, SOD.
At this rate we’ll be marinated by noon!

Reading your post from the bottom up..

A woman accused in the shooting death of her common-law husband told police her gun accidentally fired while they were playing a game of “dirty cowboy” during sexual foreplay, a Harris County prosecutor said.

    jee-zis.

  4. If Palin is planning to put aside party affiliation, her response on the “whining” issue in her latest Time magazine interview sure leaves a lot to be desired in that regard. If she continues to imply that she’s being unfairly crucified whereas the situation with Hillary was/is a separate issue, imho Palin is actually fueling the media’s double standards rather than fighting it back. I have no doubt that the media wants to go out of its way to keep painting a caricature of Palin and select quotes from her that add to that caricature, but that still doesn’t excuse her from her own words. She is continuing this “perceived whine” narrative when she could have easily shut it down and explained what she has learned from being in the national spotlight for almost a year now. Even putting the best construction on it, I think it’s a missed opportunity on Palin’s part.

I have pushed back on the irrational hatred of Palin and will continue to do so, but I have to also push back when she effectively carries the GOP’s water on the issue of Hillary vs. Palin. Whatever her motives may have been, she left enough room open for her Hillary-hating base to construe it as “only conservative women get treated unfairly.” That is such phony baloney.

Neither side of the aisle can claim the higher ground on this issue. We have seen the way a woman vying for power on the national stage from either the left or the right threatens people of all stripes in a way that men vying for power does not.

    • ZZZZzzzzzzzzzz

      We heard you yesterday.

The interviewer brought up the issue, and you are reading WAY TOO MUCH into her response.

      • I barely said anything yesterday.

I didn’t like her response to that question, and I think it detracts from an “independent” image if that’s what she’s really going for. That doesn’t make me a Palin-hater.

        • Your comment is longer than her answer.

          • So? I am discussing two issues here — the issue of her response and the theory that she wants to be put aside party affiliation, as brought up in the morning round-up.

        • Wonk the Vote, on July 12th, 2009 at 9:01 am Said: A good post, Wonk , as always.
….If she continues to imply that she’s being unfairly crucified whereas the situation with Hillary was/is a separate issue, imho Palin is actually fueling the media’s double standards rather than fighting it back.

It’s funny that she says her and Hillary bashing are
separate issues cause for me they are one and why I fly in to defend Palin! …as you say :

We have seen the way a woman vying for power on the national stage from either the left or the right threatens people of all stripes in a way that men vying for power does not.

If one is going to discuss it at all, you have to give kudos to Hill for enduring it for 16 years….and why not? I think Palin’s base is far more open to Hill.these days…it’s the Village that isn’t and to function on the national level ( at the moment) one seems to need the Village. So one separates from Hill and it’s unfortunate cause I think it weakens a very good argument by lopping off 16 years of precedent.

          • Thanks for hearing me out, paper doll.

          • I think Palin’s base is far more open to Hill.these days

I think you haven’t listened to Rigfhtwing World lately. They still revile Hillary Clinton.

          • Some people don’t live in right wing or left wing world any longer. We prefer reality. We listen to the spin from both sides and recognize it for what it is.

          • So. was that you in that lengthy exchange with TL’s resident bully, squeaky? As long as Jeralyn continues to let squeaky brutally insult and twist what people say, I refuse to engage over there. You sure kept your cool with that exchange.

      • I would expect that she’ll make mis-steps along the way. The measure will be which direction she takes following the “mis-step” — in the same direction or in a more independent direction.

My new rule of thumb is to judge a politician by what they *do* as opposed to what they *say.*

        • Absolutely–well said SOD. That goes for in my personal life too. Talk is cheap. People don’t even realize they’re doing it, but make a lot of promises they can’t keep.

        • How much did you and the confluence sell hillary out for?$50,000 shopping spree. • Sorry for the length (and the subject!), but it really bothers me, this never ending need to go back 16 months to find the one and only remark that by some is perceived(!) as if Sarah Palin has criticised Hillary Clinton! Why not go after the Democrats who actually accused her of whining … and crying?

As Govenor of Alaska, Palin hardly even registered on the radar of ‘the lower 48’ at this point, when – at a Newsweek forum on Women in Leadership on March 3. 2008, the day before the Republicans nominated McCain and 6 months before she herself was nominated as VP candidate – she answered this question:

Q: “When you look at the coverage [of Hillary Clinton], when you listen to the conversations. What do you think?”

A: “Well you know, I think – fair or unfair, the – and I do think it is … it is a more concentrated criticism that Hillary gets on so many fronts – I think that is unfortunate – but fair or unfair, I think she does herself a disservice to even mention it. Really. I mean you’re gonna plow through that. You have to know what you’re getting into, which – I say this with all due respect to Hillary Clinton and to her experience and to her passion for changing the status quo also, but when I hear a statement* like that, coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism or – you know maybe a sharper microscope put on her – I think, damn, that … that doesn’t do us any good, women in politics, women in general, wanting to progress this country. I don’t – I don’t think it bodes well for her, a statement like that because, again fair or unfair, it is there. I think that is reality and I think it is a given. I think people can just except that she is going to be under that sharper microscope. So be it. I mean [wear carter?], prove yourself to an even greater degree that you’re capable, that you’re gonna be the best candidate. And that of course is what she wants us to believe at this point. So it bothers me a little bit hearing … hearing her bring that attention to herself on that level.”

      * I haven’t been able to find what excactly this statement from Clinton was!

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9Y8FKAsxmk&feature=channel

Can’t we please put this to rest now?

      • But if people went after the Democrats who actually did accuse Hillary of whining and/or crying, that wouldn’t satisfy some mysterious internal need to do a little more worshipping at the altar of the magic “D”.

Still partisan after being stabbed in the back a dozen times. It’s an attitude I don’t understand at all.

    • Don’t take at face value anything Time mag says.

They are deliberately manipulating women’s solidarity.

As Pip says this is not a latest interview, but a much older remark.

    • I agree with you, Wonk.

  12. Might I once again vent that Jeralyn is probably the most Palin deranged person on the planet. What is up with that woman? (see BTD’s post and Jeralyn’s comment)

    • Palin clearly threatens Jeralyn in a way she’s not about to admit in public, much less to herself. I’ve wondered if her PDS has something to do with Palin’s larger success in the world combined with her seemingly close knit, intact family (Jeralyn apparently got divorced somewhere along the way and ended up a single mother). Then there’s the class issue – much less risky to wield it against a white woman.

      • Jeralyn will always be a “wannabe” while Palin most definitely is an “is”.

    • I don’t think Jeralyn is bright enough to realize that she diminishes her credibility and intelligence when she takes such a hardline stand without an ounce of evidence to her claims. Why is Sarah “dangerous”? Jeralyn claims she has ideology and hypocrisy issues, but not once has she put up a supporting post or linked to actual information to substantiate her criticism.

My firm belief is that JM is jealous sick of Sarah Palin. For how hard JM goes looking for instant celebrity, SP got it just by working hard. The media didn’t have any dirt on the Palin’s, so they took up everyday experiences that are part of many, many American families and turned them into scandals. JM is right in there with the stupidity of that. She’s no better than MoDo, IMO.

I wonder if JM realizes her own hypocrisy. When it comes to Palin, JM changes the rules constantly.

      • I suspect that Jeralyn chose party ideology last cycle. The fact that Sarah has an R after her name is why she opposes her so deeply moreso than moral conviction on any particular subject.

Sadly, after all her opining about how Biden was a dealbreaker and then her sudden turnaround make me question that it is anything other than party identification and the threat Palin presents to the party she identifies with as the rationale behind her opposition.

Palin is a very moderate conservative. She is much better than ALOT of the alternatives.

  13. White House Dirty Tricks Torpedo Palin. Troopergate started by Obots. Didn’t the Clintons go through a Troopergate?More proof Obama and Failbots are Republicans.

On a closed thread, Laurie thought I was snarling about awesome male feminist PUMAs. It wasn’t snark not to embarrass y’all or anything.

  14. New post up

  15. I really appreciate that most comments on this site about Palin are respectful and even empathetic. It seems to me that Palin could be an igniter for some type of new party emerging. Apparently tho’ the polls show that while her resignation has made her stronger with the Republican base, it has hurt her with independents. I truly despair that we will ever be able to break the partisan party folly that grips this nation. We need a new politics that is centered on solving problems and improving lives not controlling the levers of power for party advantage. Palin needs some thoughtful, intelligent and wise political mentors and unfortunately I do not see any such folks attached to her team.

I read the article on the Obama daughter and the whole Obama family—what is it with such scurrilous comments? Why does it seem to be female targets that are defiled the most? Palin? the M&M Obamas? HRC? It’s pretty disgusting and depressing.

    • “Why does it seem to be female targets that are defiled the most?”

That’s the question. Whatever the answer, I would like to see an effective counter to this “blood sport.”

  16. Swine flu vaccine being prepared in a laboratory in Brisbane, Australia, will arrive in Britain in August. But the country already has more than 9,700 cases

But, but, but, America has the best Health Care, how is it possible that a country with Universal Health Care is producing a vaccine?!? See, those anti-Single Payer people have been telling lies, they simply want to make profit off of health care and not provide health care for ALL AMERICANS.

Call your legislator today and ask that Single Payer HR 676 be allowed into the table of discussions, don’t let them lie to you, your Health Matters! Why are we ranked 37th in Health Care around the world, while 60 Americans die each day because they don’t have health care.

Ask them when their vaccine is going to be ready and ask why they delayed the testing of samples of H1N1, it’s no wonder the Mexican government sent their tests to Canada for verification (OH, that is right another country with Health Care for ALL).
