Posting may be light, because I'm working on something big. In fact, I plan to do up a video presentation on a huge story that could destroy the Murdoch/Fox empire. No, I'm not talking about the phone hacking scandal. Think bigger. Much bigger.Actually, the real work was done by some very prestigious foreign news firms. What infuriates me is that no […]

Not Another Miss California Post

topless

With all the important pageant news lately you may have missed this story from last week:

The D.C. Council overwhelmingly approved a bill yesterday to recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, in a vote that followed a sharp exchange between an openly gay member and a civil rights champion and set off shouts of reproach from local ministers.

The council passed the measure by a vote of 12 to 1. During the debate, council member David A. Catania (I-At Large) accused Marion Barry (D-Ward 8), who cast the dissenting vote, of having taken a “bigoted” position.

After the vote, enraged African American ministers stormed the hallway outside the council chambers and vowed that they will work to oust the members who supported the bill, which was sponsored by Phil Mendelson (D-At Large). They caused such an uproar that security officers and D.C. police were called in to clear the hallway.

[...]

Barry, who said he supports gay rights and civil unions, warned after the vote that the District could erupt if the council does not proceed slowly on same-sex marriage.

“All hell is going to break lose,” Barry said. “We may have a civil war. The black community is just adamant against this.”

While not as titillating and revealing as an exposé showing the naked truth about a certain beauty pageant contestant, the story matters because it actually affects some people’s lives.  So why haven’t we heard more about it?

From the incomparable Bob Somerby:

Barry is a major American politician, in a major American city. He sits where the rubber meets the road—inside a political body which may consider a bill to legalize same-sex marriages.

[...]

But it’s funny, ain’t it? You haven’t heard squat about Barry’s “ugly words” on your “progressive” cable news channel! But last night, The Dumbest Person in the World devoted another lengthy segment to ridicule of Carrie Prejean, an insignificant 21-year-old who recently made the mistake of saying something about same-sex marriage which Olbermann has never even bothered describing. (For the record, her view on the matter seems to resemble that of Barack Obama. And that of Hillary Clinton. And John Kerry and Al Gore.) The big nut went on for almost seven minutes mocking Prejean—and her breast implants. But it’s funny, ain’t it? You’ve never heard a word on this program about the things Marion Barry said.

Of course, the reasons for that are obvious:

Olbermann doesn’t have videotape of Barry walking around in a two-piece swim suit. And Barry is an older man, not a younger woman. As Olbermann has made dumb-foundingly clear, he seems to live for the opportunity to ridicule young women. He never says boo about older man—perhaps understanding they could come to his studio and engage in conduct which might require him to obtain a sphincter implant.

Olbermann’s a woman-trasher—a genuine nut on this matter. And no, we hate to break the news: He doesn’t do “progressive” television. He seems to do work designed to capture the eyeballs of well-meaning young liberals. And for some ungodly reason, he does television which has long been devoted to the ridicule of women’s brains and bodies.

Marion Barry doesn’t count. An insignificant creation of Donald Trump quite incessantly does.

(Background: Trump owns the Miss USA contest. He now engineers a dispute every year, hoping to bring his product parity with the more famous Miss America pageant.)

For sheer stupidity, we strongly recommend last night’s buffoonish segment, devoted to the eternal dumbness of Miss California. (To watch the segment, click this.) Olbermann plays you every way but blue, citing those breast implants two separate times (including in his opening paragraph) and failing to tell you why Prejean might be upset about the way she’s been treated. (He always forgets to explain this.) You see, in the world of “progressive cable,” calling a young woman a “c*nt” and a b*itch” isn’t worthy of comment—if she fails to hold pseudo-progressive views, that is. “Where are the feminists?” Laura Ingraham inquired. We would broaden her limited framework: Where are the progressives?

[...]

In this world, Barry doesn’t exist. You see, Barry is both black and male, and Keith doesn’t plan to enter such realms. For years, he has pimped you trash about women’s dumbness, while progressives have sat there and stared.

Prejean is a thoroughly insignificant figure—an invention of Trump’s latest pseudo-controversy. By way of contrast, Barry is a major player in one of our most important cities—a city known all over the world, even in Secaucus. But so what? On your “progressive” TV machine, you hear about one—but not the other.

Okay, so I lied about this post not being about Miss California – but only a little bit.   I noticed that Monday’s news produced the sounds of silence from much of Left Blogistan, and most of the sites that did cover the story danced around this part:

At a press conference addressing Carrie Prejean’s disputed title in the Miss USA competition, pageant owner Donald Trump compared Prejean’s stated views on gay marriage to Obama’s.

“It’s the same answer that the president of the United States gave,” Trump said. “She gave an honorable answer. She gave an answer from her heart.”

At the deceptively-named site “Liberal Values” Ron Chusid writes:

While I agree with Trump’s decision, he was being rather simplistic in his comparison to Obama’s views. While Prejean is now campaigning against gay marriage, Obama at least is supporting civil unions. Prejean’s view on gay marriage comes from religious conservatism. Obama’s opposition unfortunately comes from political pragmatism. While Prejean is wrong on the issue, I guess she did do better than Obama in at least sticking up for what she believes is right.

I’m guessing that Mr. Chusid thinks Obama’s views are “nuanced.” He also appears to believe that publishing racy photos of Ms. Prejean is essential to the story.  But I don’t recall ever hearing her express an opinion on civil unions, and Obama clearly said his position was based on his religious beliefs.

Recently we had someone suggesting that Gary Chapelhill’s posts from last November discussing (based on exit polling data) African American support for Proposition 8 were racist.  Is anyone calling Marion Barry a racist?  Anyone?  Bueller?

Here’s a big difference between Carrie Prejean, Marion Barry and Barry Obama – the latter two are elected officials who hold real power.  So what do the “progessive” bloggers do?

They attack the woman.

  1. Good job you trashed (re-trashed) the sexist pig SOB Olbermann!!

  2. And I could do without that *&*&^ photo of the man-boobs on the man boob– himbo.

  3. Ugh, just can’t get past the beachcake image. At least it was taken in the shallows – Barry’s natural element.

  4. I love this post and I almost didn’t read it because of that picture of him. I effing hate that picture. I wish I knew how to photoshop.

I can’t believe that dumbass actually showed up in AZ.

  5. Marion Barry is a civil rights champion?

I agree about KO and Prejean, obviously, but I also think that somehow “black people hate gays!” has been a shibboleth in the liberal blogosphere going back years, and it’s bs. I’ve seen a bazillion comments through the years that have actually gone so far as to claim that random people must be homophobes not because of one single thing they did or said but just because they’re black. As Cinie pointed out, there really isn’t any evidence that black people are more or less likely to be anti-gay than anyone else, it seems really unlikely, and demographically it doesn’t seem like they have the numbers to have all this blame assigned to them. I’d love to know how this meme got started back through the mists of time.

    • I’m talking about the Gary thing, I mean I understand why it made people uncomfortable

    • I don’t know how black people feel about gays. I’m not black and I can’t read minds. I’ve seen anecdotal evidence and some exit polls from the Prop 8 balloting.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the black people that are regular church goers are also more socially conservative, just like most members of Christian churches. But I don’t see that as a racial thing, it’s based on religion.

GCH’s posts last November looked at California exit poll data showing that blacks overwhelming supported Obama and also supported Prop 8. IIRC it was something like 95% voted for Obama and 70% voted yes on Prop 8.

Gary’s point was that if everyone who voted for Obama voted no on Prop 8 it would have been defeated. For saying that he was accused of racism.

      • I get the point about Prop 8, what I’m saying is it’s a sensitive topic because of this backdrop of years and years of comments all over the liberal blogosphere and also the meme pushed in the media claiming as an article of faith that somehow black people are uniquely homophobic.

      • Oh and of course it’s crazy for Obots to act like the only place Prop 8 demographics were being discussed was here, that exact discussion was ubiquitous all throughout Obamaland.

      • In the land of the Obamalamadingdongs, only racists discuss race.

      • Like I said, I understand why that discussion was very problematic, but it was all throughout the fauxgressive Obama blogosphere. But it’s like convenient selective memory, it couldn’t have happened here, it was just over there, blame them.

    • From Marion Barry’s DC Council page:

“In Memphis, Barry attended Booker T. Washington High School where he was not only an “A” student through most of his high school years, but also a skilled football and basketball player. Barry graduated in 1954. He then entered Le Moyne College, a small commuter HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), on scholarship where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He furthered his education at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee earning a master’s degree on a full scholarship. Barry completed three years of the doctoral program in chemistry at the University of Tennessee before abandoning it to become immersed in the civil rights movement full-time. In 1960 the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was founded and Mr. Barry became the first chairman of SNCC and moved to Washington, D.C., in 1965 and has been a full-time resident of the city ever since. He has never left the nation’s capitol. Barry has one son, Marion Christopher Barry, who resides in Washington, D.C.”

I bolded the part about his civil rights involvement. I am not a fan of Mr. Barry’s but give the man credit where credit is due. He did organize the DC Transit boycott back in the 60s and, although he has many flaws, he has been a tireless fighter for his constituents which is why they keep voting him back into office.

      • oops. italicized, not bolded.

      • I am a 27 year resident of DC, politically active, and am represented at this point by Mr. Barry on the DC Council. He is elected/reelected, I believe, based on past reputation and mainly on his universal name recognition. I would note that in his first election to the Mayor’s office in DC, he greatly benefit from volunteers and contributions from the LGBT community. At this point, Mr. Barry seems to very his position with the current winds or gusts rather than on principled stands. He initially indicated he supported the recognition bill. Then he changed, in part because he saw an opportunity to get media attention for being the lone member speaking on this side of the question. I give the man props for his PRIOR leadership. I am terribly disappointed in his current stance — and how the mighty have fallen!

      • gxm, I was asking, not being sarcastic. I’d never heard about Barry’s record, thanks for the info. :)

  6. Hmmm?:

“The liberal onslaught of malicious attacks against Carrie Prejean for expressing her opinion is despicable.”

“Carrie and I spoke soon after the attacks started; I can relate as a liberal target myself. What I find so remarkable is that these politically-motivated attacks fail to show that what Carrie and I believe is also what President Obama and Secretary Clinton believe – marriage is between a man and a woman.”

“I applaud Donald Trump for standing with Carrie during this time. And I respect Carrie for standing strong and staying true to herself, and for not letting those who disagree with her deny her protection under the nation’s First Amendment Rights.”

“Our Constitution protects us all – not just those who agree with the far left.”

    “Governor Sarah Palin”

I gotta disagree – I’m “far left” and the attacks aren’t coming from my neighborhood.

    • And there is the problem with these yahoo “progressives” trashing someone like this. It’s like Rush saying the insane stuff he does which hurts conservatives.

I know msnbc and these other fauxgressives want to help, but please don’t. Really. Why don’t you all help the religious right instead. Please.

    • Sadly, these days the “Far Left” doesn’t seem to be any different from the “far right” of the nineties. Wouldn’t you agree?

      • They have better outfits and more muscle definition overall…

      • I agree and my friends and relatives have unfortunately fallen in to that trap. I don’t think they realize to what extent the “sarah palin is a stupid barbie doll and bros before ho’s” made so many of us sick.

    • Can these people fight their battles without dragging in Hillary Clinton?

How much beatings do the likes of Sarah Palin want HRC to take? Fight your battles and live her out, she’s been at it since Bill Clinton decided to run for the WH, and we even forget what she went through in AR.

    • I agree. I’ve begun to believe that there’s a sizable group of people who adhere to an ideology of hate. They are the same folks who love Rush Limblob. They also love Keith Olberpigg. They simply enjoy hating on someone. And right now that someone is women.

    • I am left too and they are not coming from my neighborhood either. They are coming from the faux left that used to be republican and are still libertarian (and the fools who follow them because they read their blogs) When Markos said that he and his were in the business of holding the bluedogs feet to the fire, ROFL, they are the freaking blue dogs.

  7. This is priceless:

The day after Carrie Prejean was told she could keep her Miss California crown, Shanna Moakler has resigned, she confirms to Usmagazine.com exclusively.

“Since the press conference yesterday, I had a chance to think about what has taken place, and I feel that at this time it is in my best interest to resign from the Miss California USA organization,” Moakler tells Us.

“I cannot with a clear conscious move forward supporting and promoting the Miss Universe Organization when I no longer believe in it, or the contracts I signed committing myself as a youth,” she continues. “I want to be a role model for young women with high hopes of pageantry, but now feel it more important to be a role model for my children. I am sorry and hope I have not let any young supporters down but wish them the best of luck in fulfilling their dreams.”

Shanna Moakler is a former Playboy centerfold. I’m not holding that against her but her credibility as moral scold of Carrie Prejean is kinda questionable.

    • Wait, is she upset about the pics or about equal marriage? If it’s the pics, well, obviously, but if it’s about equal marriage, good for her for taking a stand and I love what she said about her children.

      • There is no such thing as equal marriage. There can’t be equality within an arrangement based on property exchange. If there were equality, marriage wouldn’t exist. Romanticizing slavery does not advance human rights.

      • Well, yeah, I feel you on that.

  8. “Shanna Moakler is a former Playboy centerfold”

Well at least it wasn’t Hustler, AKA “Popular Gynecology”.

    • Gynecology is very popular. Gynecologists practice their love for women all over the world. Who knew we could just buy Hustler?

  9. Let’s not forget that Obama’s views are not merely “pragmatic.” He explicitly said in several interviews, “I am a Christian…” before he described the sanctity of his own marriage and how gay people could not have that, because it is only between a man and a woman.

  10. Outstanding post and comments, all!

Olbermann is seriously, at this point, no different from Glenn Beck or Rush or any of those other unhinged, unmoored-from-reality screamers. His misoygyny has truly reached hysterical proportions (and yes I used that word!!) — which is probably why the only woman he can deal with as a “girlfriend” is a 20-year-old, assuming he is still with her. I’m guessing she tried to, oh, have a life separate from his and found herself either being flung forcefully out the door or (let’s hope) running fast for her life…

  11. Also wanted to second what gxm7 said. I lived in D.C. during the Barry years (when the City Paper dubbed him “Mayor for Life”) and it was certainly a wild ride. The guy certainly did some stupid crap, and yes, his administration was quite corrupt, but what people forget is that he did a lot for his constituents — gxm cited the transit workers strike. I remember the summer jobs program, and expansion of city services, which meant both more services and more jobs, and fighting hard for government contracts to go to D.C. businesses.

The thing about Barry was that no white person could understand why he kept getting reelected, and there was shock and awe in the white D.C. wards when he was elected as city councilman–after being busted for crack possession. But in Ward 8 and many other wards, he is still greatly loved.

  12. After the vote, enraged African American ministers stormed the hallway outside the council chambers and vowed that they will work to oust the members who supported the bill, which was sponsored by Phil Mendelson (D-At Large). They caused such an uproar that security officers and D.C. police were called in to clear the hallway.

    Bite me bigotted black preachers.

  13. Didn’t donna brazzile refuse to have gay rights in the democratic platform as she felt it would take away from blacks?
Is the anti gay belief in some of the black community because they truly believe that it is wrong or they are afraid the rights for all would take away from them?

WOMEN WITH INTELLIGENCE AND EXPERIENCE,MEN WHO SUPPORT THEM AND COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY ALWAYS

    PUMAS,BUBBAS,EQUALISTS AND THOSE PEOPLE RULE

    • she said the two, racism and homophobia could not be equated and in fact that doing so was an insult to black people because being black was not a choice and not something you could hide.

      • She should that to the people whose loved ones have be executed for the crime of homosexuality. It seems “hiding” doesn’t always work.

    • Delegate Selection (Donna Brazile @ 10:58 ‘Influential individual who wanted NO CHANGE’)

Howard Dean discusses his role in LGBT Delegate Selection. Gov. Dean Clip in DC Discrimination, Defamation, and Conspiracy to Defame Lawsuit.

NO CHANGE = NOT Adding Gays to Delegate Selection

Translation, is that the ‘Influential Individual’ DOnna Brazile advocated for not including gays, and not giving them representation at the convention.

  14. There are 6 other black DC city council members (including the council chairman), and they all voted yes on the same-sex marriage recognition bill. The black mayor signed it. The black congressional delegate has promised to keep it alive during the 30 day congressional review. There is no black gay-hating monolith.

Gary’s problem re prop 8 was that he wasn’t nearly as willing to bash religious voters or Republican voters in California as he was to bash black voters, even though the former voted against same-sex marriage in greater percentages than African-Americans. Gary was looking for any cudgel to bash Obama with, and thus ignored that people voting for his preferred candidate were the most likely to vote for Prop. 8.

    • There is no monolith but there is a life time of evidence for me to look at both as a religious person, woman who was involved with a black man for years, his family and his moderate church..and someone who is passionate about gay civil rights, equal marriage being one of them.
Black people, particularly those who go to church tend to be across the board more homophobic than white people.
religious republicans may have voted for prop 8 on a higher percentage than black democrats, but white democrats including those who go to church voted AGAINST prop eight in very large numbers. So your argument kind of gets shot down.

    • Do you know Gary personally? Have you talked with him about this issue?

Unlike Republicans and fundies, African Americans are the one key demographic that voted FOR Obama and FOR Prop 8. The majority of AA voters are registered as Democrats.

If the AA voters in California that voted for Obama had voted against Prop 8 it would have failed.

Nobody expected the Republicans and the fundies to vote against Prop 8, but many people thought they could count on the Democrats to defeat it. When that didn’t happen they felt betrayed.

      • BTW – If you want to argue the issue you should go over to Gary’s blog and argue with him.

Good luck trying though, Gary has the same low opinion of trolls and blogstalkers that I do.

    • Delegate Selection (Donna Brazile @ 10:58 ‘Influential individual who wanted NO CHANGE’)

Just because the press/media has their head in the sand (won’t report on it) doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen. View the video and then come back and defend Miss Donna Brazile! If the Black Leadership is busy trying to keep Gays out and trying to block Gay Rights then they are forgetting some of the true leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.

Banning Same Sex Marriages Is A Form Of Gay Bashing — Coretta Scott King

      • BTW: I didn’t release the tapes! The DNC’s Nixonesque scandal of denying Gay Rights to Democrats and keeping it all under the table, except for the leaked Depositions.

I think it was all hush hush because many within the LGBT community were working to get Obama elected and Donna Brazile was busy working to do the same (5.31.2008…the day our votes died and thus offered her and her friends cover. So, only now are some
( Andrew Sullivan Has Lost His Love for Obama http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com/2009/05/andrew-sullivan-has-lost-his-love-for.html ) coming to the shocking revelation that they were working against their own interests.

    • I agree with you on the substance, but as I mentioned before I read post after post from pissed off black Obama supporters, gay and straight, furious with pissed off white gay Obama supporters. Why? Because Republicans and religious people were being given a pass and all this anger was being directed at CA’s black voters. This was a widespread problem, not only throughout the blogosphere but IRL–there were reports of black gay people being attacked at No on 8 rallies, for god’s sake! This is a Democratic problem, not a PUMA problem. To paraphrase you, you’re so busy looking for a cudgel to bash this site with that you’re acting like this argument originated here or this was the center of it and ignore that it was coming from everywhere, from kos (ask shanikka, she was upset about the reaction to her diary breaking down the demos) on down and everywhere in between. This is one of THE most common tropes in the liberal blogosphere since forever.

      • you’re so busy looking for a cudgel to bash this site with that you’re acting like this argument originated here–Seriously, on May 14th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Firstly, all the other sites mention, never even ‘allowed’ anyone to discuss anything but pure sun shine about Obama but a free for all was on the women candidates.

My grumpiness has to do with the DNC (the Democrats that are the power base and those liberals that went on all the talk shows but didn’t look farther than their noses) and not within one here on this site.

This site is one of the few that has discussions and yes, not everyone agrees, but at least the topics are brought to the light of day. No heads in the sand here. As for Gary, I have met him in person and he and his partner were friendly and engaging. I spent some quality time with his partner and they both don’t have any issues with people of color (lots of love there), they do speak up about their Rights to Civil Rights and Human Rights and I applaud them for speaking up.

        Silence is our greatest enemy.

      • In case it’s not clear between me being vague plus the nesting, i was talking to John Cain, nothing i said was addressed to you or your comments, WV.

      • I have a problem with the idea of attacking ANYONE because of the way they vote or because we don’t agree with them on issues.

For our political system to work we have to “agree to disagree.”

Freedom of speech and the right to vote don’t mean much if we have to fear the mob.
