Why Am I Not Surprised?

The Groper

The Groper

Ali Campoverdi

Ali Campoverdi

 It seems that chief Obama speechwriter Jon “The Groper” Favreau has found a love connection with Ali Campoverdi, a former lingerie model for Maxim magazine.  Where, you ask, did the frat-boy photo fondler meet such a hot babe with his busy schedule writing inspiring speeches for TelePrompter Jeebus?  It appears to be an office romance:

Feminist?

Feminist?

Ms Campoverdi is now an aide to a White House deputy chief of staff, American media outlets said.

But she has previously appeared American reality shows – including including the dating show For Love or Money, where she was a ‘million-dollar girl’.

The California native also appeared as a vampire hunted by Keanu Reeves in Constantine and was a finalist for the American version of The Apprentice with Donald Trump.

And we were worried that President Obama wasn’t hiring enough women.  I guess you just need to have the right assets.

More on Mr. Favreau’s work product from Sheryl Robinson at The New Agenda:

Given the mere eleven days between Gov. Palin’s arrival on the national scene and the comments by Obama, the lipstick and fish juxtaposition is simply too convenient—too elegant, one might say—to dismiss as a coincidence. Like the rabbit and caterpillar I used above, Obama’s references were intended to evoke a specific association for the listener—Governor Sarah Palin: a pig in lipstick, a smelly fish.

[...]

It was perfect—a work of art—and the idea that a skilled orator like Obama didn’t know what he was doing when he spoke those words is absurd.

Of course he knew.

Just like he knew what unconscious association he was evoking when he said, “I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically, when she’s feeling down, goes on the attack to boost her appeal.”

Hillary Clinton: hormonal harridan.

Perhaps Obama didn’t like doing it. Maybe he was advised to use these tactics, told, “This is what you have to do to win.” Maybe he didn’t write this stuff himself. Maybe Favreau wrote it, and maybe writing things that were deliberately intended to demean Senator Clinton shaped Favreau’s attitude toward her to such a degree that just days after Obama appointed her as Secretary of State, Favreau would take a cardboard cutout of the senator back to his place as a party prop and interact with it in ways that were intended to humiliate her.

That comes via Violet Socks, who adds:

It’s extraordinary: a campaign so relentlessly on-message and attentive to detail that they never even used Arial font when it was supposed to Gotham, not once, not even for a last-minute extra batch of signs.

And we’re supposed to believe that the sexism was an accident?

But what does she know?  She’s just a right-wing mole.

  1. I am so tired of this. Quite frankly, I can’t take another bit of misogyny for the sexist in chief. I am trying to tune out … but to no avail. Cuz it’s just everywhere. EVERYWHERE!

  2. What gets me is the astounding tone-deafness of Obamanation.

  3. It turns out that Ms. Campoverdi is a graduate of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

    That makes it all good.

  4. I don’t know if “Fav” is actually dating her (My friends who live in DC tell me otherwise). To me, it doesn’t matter if he’s dating a Playboy playmate or a physicist: it doesn’t cancel out the bigoted stunt he pulled. Look at Barack: he married an accomplished, ambitious lawyer and yet he’s more than able to revel in intolerance and hate.

  5. @Myiq2xu:

    Isn’t Bill O also a graduate from the Kennedy School?

  6. who cares?

  7. Well, no wonder he is so very inspired.

  8. Well I am no suprised at all! Mr Pampers really is a woman hating gay man (there are a few)I know the signs and Mr Favreau is a chauvamist str8 man on the outside on the inside pure chauvanist or more of the same….

    they are tweedle mean and tweddledummer but I have there number! we all do!

    The shine on the administration will slowing turn th $hit and we will be there to say “I told you so!”

    I will enjoy every minute…until some derranged and disillusioned Obot puts us out of our misery….Objects of cults of personality are always taken out by one of their “truest” believers!

  9. When does Pam Anderson start her job?

  10. Yet again, today’s NYTimes has a piece about Paterson’s alleged gross mishandling of CK’s candidacy for the Senate appointment. Talk about beating a dead horse. They just won’t stop. Neither will all the other left leaning national media based in New York.

    Until yesterday, it appeared that the discredit Paterson campaign was being driven by a vengeful Kennedy clan. After seeing today’s piece in the Times, I’m starting to see that the smear strategy is originating from NYC and not Hyannis Port.

    The featured attack in the Times today is unexpected. It comes from well respected Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg. I would not be surprised if by end of week, Rudy Giuliani also chimes in. The Paterson/Carolyn “fiasco” has less to do with Gillibrand, and everything to do I believe with, 1) the NY Governor’s race in 2010, and 2) the huge budget crisis in NY state resulting from the Wall Street meltdown. The financial meltdown in particular is looking for a fall guy in state or city government. The Republicans are very aware of what’s at stake. So why not go after the current fill-in Governor, deflect responsibility away from Republican officials like Bloomberg, and set up Giuliani for a powerful run at Albany in 2010. Where Andrew Cuomo will fit into this picture remains unclear for now. The two NY Senators along with Big Dawg will be strongly behind Paterson’s re-election. But as usual, the major NY based media seem ready to be compliant if not complicit with the people on the wrong side of this political charade. Maybe they feel the GOP might be better at preserving their media jobs. The MSM’s behavior in recent weeks has been loony and unpredictable. – like a scared, wounded animal.
    In the coming months and years, there will be two types of politicians in New York on the issue of Wall Street. Those that are looking to place blame, and those that are accepting responsibility and looking for solutions. My money for now is down on Paterson, not Bloomberg or Giuliani.

  11. hey next season “the girls next door” will be filmed in its new location….The Whitehouse Westwing….

    Woo Hoo! str8 boys the web cams will be every were including the girls washroom gym and shower and in every broom closet and copy room!

    Thank the goddess for your mouse….you can navigate one handed!

  12. So is she the classic Riverdaughter description of the female Obot, i.e., Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models with PhDs in Architecture?

    How did she jump from Reality Show Ho & Maxim Girl to being a White House Aide?

  13. Obama girl can’t be a shoe model or a hand model. She can’t be a dressmakers model or a haute couture model. She certainly isn’t a makeup model. There are women and girls who earn good incomes with these types of modeling. Campoverdi is an underwear model. Not lingerie but underwear. There are many women who will not do this type of work. Why? Because it is demeaning and lascivious. She is another nitwit who went to Harvard. And yes I have heard all the arguments about our beautiful bodies and nudity is good. As I told photographers way back when “You take off your duds and I’ll take pictures of you”.

  14. Gawker.com (I haven’t been able to give them up), has a good profile as to who Ms Campoverdi is.

    She seems like a girl who’s smart & accomplished in her studies but wants to be a movie STAH.

    And she’s dating FAVREAU???

  15. Change…ain’t it cool?

  16. OMG! She’s the stereotypical ObamaBot. Everything’s coming up roses for her because her tits don’t sag.

  17. Well not yet anyway, Riverdaughter…and maybe never the plastic surgery gods have anything to say about it.

  18. New Yorkers think Caroline blew it, not Ted – but don’t look for this headline in any of the MSM outlets

    http://edgeoforever.wordpress.com/2009/01/27/sorry-teddy-ny-ers-blame-caroline-not-the-governor/

  19. Why am I thinking Favreau is the George Stephanopoulos of the moment?

    Can’t wait ’til his kiss-’n-tell book comes out (re Obama, not this fembot he’s boffing.) And it’ll be sooner than we think.

  20. She’s young, she’s pretty but the poor thing has to pose in her underwear to get her 15 minutes of fame & her “reward” is being linked to a sexist pig. Thank God my self-esteem was never so low.

  21. I care. Why? Because these idjits (Fav and Co., ObamaNation) think it’s “okay” to call Sarah Palin a bimbo. The intellectual dishonesty is astounding. But, hey, what do you expect from a bunch of emotionally stunted twits who idolize a liar.

  22. I was either 12 or 13 the first time a man offered me money to pose for pictures. Anyone with a half a brain, and luckily I had at least that much smarts at that young age, knows it’s not a compliment.

  23. gxm17, see its still a double standard. The bar is set much higher for women. In order to escape the bimbo label you HAVE to be ivy league, in which case being on a TV dating show is perfectly okay and far preferable to being say, a governor with a degree from a state school.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    funny how Sarah Palin cannot defend herself and the media frenzy that not only tried to make her appear stupid and inept, but Obambi can call out Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh by name, and what i think is hilarious is he did this while discussin this disgusting stimulus package…didnt he run on cutting spending and taxes and now he wants more than bush ever asked for, this simply is amazing to me.
    Oh, and now he’s told the muslim world that we have always been wrong and tried to dictate to them, ummmm…..they must not have listened LOLOLOLOLO
    he wants to be loved by everyone doesnt he? Please, please everyone just love me, i want to be historical, he will probably be known as the histarical president, he’s just soooooooooooooo pimpy
  25. a governor with a degree from a state school.
    Oh lord, imagine if Sarah P. had done a photo shoot in her skivvies when she was in her 20′s!
  26. Going against the current here. Favreau is a pig, so is Obama, but you all are making me super uncomfortable with what you are saying about this young woman. How is this any different from what was done to Hillary and Sarah? I love you all, but you’re wrong here.
  27. As an aside — the airbrushing at Maxim is heavy-handed — her legs seem to have the same texture & consistency as a Barbi doll’s — but maybe that’s the point.
  28. bluelyon — did anyone call her a c*nt and I missed it? Let this be a lesson young girls — when you pose in your underwear for attention you’ll get it but you will be defined by it.
  29. did anyone call her a c*nt and I missed it?
    Nope, but RD had a comment about her tits, followed by comments from others about plastic surgery, and the attitude here is she’s a slut (in not so many words) for (A) having done underwear modeling and (B) dating Favreau. I’d say she’s a fool for dating him (if indeed she is), but c’mon, do you all not feel the icky slut shaming that’s going on in this thread?
    Call out Favreau on his choice of words, his actions, etc, but leave her out of it.
  30. Oh I don’t know, when you allow yourself to pose in your undies for all the world to see, I guess you become fair game. After all, isn’t the message she is hoping to send is, “look at me. Don’t you all agree I have the right to bear my assets since I look so much better than you? Isn’t this what men want? Aren’t I giving them a chance to salivate over my talents? Eat your hearts out fugly ladies. I have more to offer than you”?
    She is typical of what appears daily on Facebook and MySpace pages. Women and girls eager to share their undeveloped sexuality for a chance to demean themselves for a shot of “fame”. Women have been fired from jobs such as teaching and law enforcement for doing the same yet this one is now sitting in the WH, “advising”.
    The joke is on us.
  31. No, it isn’t any better than what happened to Sarah and Hillary. Maybe that’s the point. It doesn’t matter what you do in life; as a woman, it will define you. It’s up to you to lead your life in a way that will reflect well upon you.
    Then again, I don’t judge her. [I like the outfit (corsets are tops), just wish I had the body to pull it off.] She clearly saw this as something she wanted to do. I support her making her own decisions, even if I disagree with them.
  32. bluelyon — I see your point, but I think the comments have been directed at the fact that she choose to define herself as a nothing more than a sex object. When a person does that, I tend to believe her.
  33. Pat, if that was your own daughter that posed (for money – to get through school perhaps?) and the photos were in the public domain because of the contract she signed, would you be comfortable with letting your friends go on and on about her as you all about this young woman?
    So what if she was on t.v.? Just because she went to Harvard doesn’t mean it was handed to her.
  34. Blue Lyon:
    I get you’re point and the way I see Campoverdi is that she’s a really smart girl who wants to be famous.
    I hope she dumps Favreau for another guy; she can do much better than the smarmy speechwriter.
  35. bluelyon:
    Do you think we need more like her?
    I find it makes me super uncomfortable that a short period of time this young woman goes from underwear model to WH aide in the administration of a misogynist who hasn’t appointed nearly enough women to his Cabinet.
    I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with Ms. Campoverde but under the circumstances this just sends the wrong message.
  36. I think the comments have been directed at the fact that she choose to define herself as a nothing more than a sex object
    No, that’s how you are all defining her. We know nothing about her, but because she did this posing, suddenly she’s a bimbo, with nothing else to offer.
    Women have been fired from jobs such as teaching and law enforcement for doing the same yet this one is now sitting in the WH, “advising”.
    So that makes what is being said about her “okay” exactly how?
  37. Yeah, myiq. I’m recalling those faked photos of Palin in a swimsuit and posing for, IIRC, a cover of Playboy. They didn’t have any actual photos like that so they had to create them.
    And, bluelyon, no one has called this girl any names. ALL women spend almost all of their lives with men trying to get them out of their clothes. It’s not a compliment. And it’s sad sad sad that we teach our girls to base their self esteem on men’s arousal … when it’s something they don’t even have to work for. It’s twisted.
    ITA with the commenter who mentioned asking the photographer to take off his clothes. IMO, it’s really the only way to level the playing field.
  38. I think it can say anything. It can say, she did some impressive things at Harvard that make her worthy of a spot there–regardless of what she did in her underwear. In other words, she made a mistake, if she considers it thus, and it hasn’t ruined her. It could also say, whatever you come from, you can be important and do important things.
    I think it says whatever we want it to. We define the message.
  39. in the administration of a misogynist who hasn’t appointed nearly enough women to his Cabinet.
    This is the problem, not what she did before she got there.
  40. Exactly Regency.
  41. BTW:
    She wasn’t an underwear model in the sense of posing in a catalog. Maxim is like a PG-13 version of Playboy, with bras and panties instead of nudity.
  42. Can someone let me out of moderation? Don’t know what I said wrong but Spammy grabbed me.
  43. I don’t read Playboy or Maxim so I would never have even seen her if no one had pointed her out.
    For the record, if that picture is PG-13, we need to have a discussion with the MPAA.
  44. Well bluelyon if it makes you any happier then I retract any bashing I did of her for being hot. Good for her. May she work it to her advantage as long as she can. What I lament is a world in which it is necessary for a young woman to be hot in order to get her due respect. And while I may not necessarily blame her for exploiting something that she didn’t create, I would have a lot more respect for her if she wasn’t linked romantically with a sexist pig. And I would feel the same if my daughter was dating the pig but I so doubt that he would even look in her direction so I have nothing to worry about.
  45. Regency & Blue Lyon:
    I don’t have a problem with Campoverdi posing in Maxim – she can do with herself as she pleases. She’s an attractive girl who is also very smart too, but she also wants to be famous.
    Where I have a problem is that Favreau put his girlfriend to work as a White House Aide. Nepotism to the extreme.
  46. From the article: Ali Campoverdi stripped off for Maxim in 2004
    She did this FIVE YEARS ago. How long must she wait to get a job as a White House aide (not advisor…AIDE). How long must she do penance for posing in her underwear?
  47. Here’s what it says: she’ll do anything to get ahead and reach her goals. Unfortunately, better women than Campoverdi have tried that and have been squashed by the likes of Favreau and, er, Campoverdi.
    But, as is typical of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models with PhD in architecture types, that kind of thinking is just so olllllld.
  48. I still can’t figure out what anyone “said” about this woman. No one has called her names. And RD made a comment about her breasts as a snark against the sexists, like Favreau, who judge women that way.
  49. Where I have a problem is that Favreau put his girlfriend to work as a White House Aide. Nepotism to the extreme.
    Where in the article does it say she works for him or was hired by him? I read the whole thing.
    They met there. Lots of people date people from work.
    she’ll do anything to get ahead and reach her goals
    Sounds just like what they said about Hillary.
    Anyway, I gotta go get ready for work, while I still have a job. See you all later.
  50. Palin is “hot.” It didn’t get her any respect from these pigs. It’s not about being hot. It’s about being willing to go along with the sexist, misogynist meme.
  51. Thanks for pulling my first comment out. Can you grab the other one Spammy caught? He seems to like me this morning.
  52. How long must she do penance for posing in her underwear?
    I find it odd that I’m the old fuddy-duddy here. Ms. Campoverde spent the last five years trying out for movies and reality television shows (including a dating show.) Now she’s working in the WH.
    But if women want to get ahead by flashing their flesh, they shouldn’t complain when men stare at their assets.
  53. myiq – I agree with you and think some here are definitely missing the point! But with an administration the relies on the words of the groper …. completely expected.
  54. next up – a cabinet post for scarlett johansen
  55. Ms. Campoverde isn’t complaining. She has a job. She’s doing just fine. I know I’m complaining because we’re seeing that she’s been condemned for performing an act that doesn’t have anything to do with the job she has now.
    The only thing it leads me to ask is whether White House work is really what she wants to do.
  56. I’m with myiq and RD. This young woman seems to want to get ahead the easy way. Apparently her lingerie, Hollywood and TV careers didn’t take off so now she’s going to take a shot at politics. Whatever. That’s my opinion. If you don’t like it, fine.
    FWIW, my husband was scandalized when he did a gig for some Republican event many years ago. They had more groupies than he’d ever seen at any rock show. He said they were like sharks in a feeding frenzy. Thank heavens I married a musician and not a politician!
  57. Blue Lyon:
    Campoverdi just started working at the WH after Obama won the election.
    Like MYIQ said, she’s starred in reality shows & trying to break into movies & TV, right up until Obama won.
  58. I guess what bluelyon is attempting to say that if she used her assets to pay off tuition expenses then she should be given a pass as opposed to someone who just sheds their clothes simply because she felt like it.
    Apparently if a woman is stretching herself alongside a pole, but is doing it solely based on her “scholarship”, we should applaud her but if she is doing it to support her drug habit she should be ashamed of herself.
    Having it both ways can work if you can find the proper context. I perceive it as women selling their bodies for whatever purpose suits them. Call me a prude but the standards here are the same. Sex sells.
  59. I don’t care why she did it. She did. It’s done. She’s doing something else now. Why is this important?
    If she was hired because she gave a good porn face, then the person who hired her is at fault, not her.
    That’s just me. I’m a lifetime holder of minority opinions. I can dig it.
    I have to study now. See ya.
  60. If a woman flirts, flashes skin, dresses provocatively to get ahead, that’s okay, but if I hire her or promote her based on that, I’m a sexist pig?
  61. Pat, Call me a contrarian but I actually have more respect/compassion for the poor gal who sells herself to support her drug habit. But you’re right, prostitution is prostitution regardless of whether tuition or drugs are involved. The whole “it’s liberating to sell my body” meme never caught on with me.
  62. I’m not surprised today’s New York Times attack de jour on the NY Gov , over Princess’s stubbed toe, is coming from Mayor Michael Bloomberg. IMO,his role in this has been way , way under reported. A large part of CK problem was she’s Mike’s creature almost as much as Ted’s . I believe her PR was run out of the same office as Bloomberg’s ( and they both need a new firm ASAP ) Plus some Bloomberg people tired to strong arm support for CK mafia style and it back fired. Mike’s in this deep. He wanted to be Barry’s VP or at least MaCain’s…..then he wanted a NY Senator in his pocket….and didn’t get any of it. He’s one peeved multi-billionaire.
  63. I don’t shop for much women’s underwear so I really don’t care about how it’s marketed so I really don’t have an opinion of Ms. Campoverdi’s decisions. What I think will be the most telling is what happens from here? Will the bus stop while Ms. Campoverdi is being thrown under it or will there be a kathud, kathud. Ms. Campoverdi is emblematic of a big part of what gave us BZero and it’s my bet she is reassigned by close of business today. Wonder if that message will be Twittered?
  64. Without making disparaging remarks about the woman, I agree that this story is newsworthy because it points to some of the inherent contradictions in the Obama campaign.
    First, as myiq pointed out, we can all imagine the spittle and furor that would have been unleashed if Sarah Palin had done something similar. However, when it concerns someone with an elite degree who has evidently shown allegiance to the Obama coterie, there is no outrage from them.
    Second, this sheds more light on Favreau’s ideas about women. How anyone with those ideas and behaviors (i.e. groping Hillary cutout) can be putting the words in the mouth of our presumed wise, inspiring, and liberal leader is more than a bad joke: it’s hypocrisy to the extreme.
    Last point: I recall that an infamous Apprentice castmember had some experience as a White House aide — Omarosa. Maybe this job is just a springboard for Ms. Campoverde to break into reality TV.
  65. I guess it is just me. I never considered or equated “feminism” with objectivication. But that’s just me. I never considered it “liberation” for a female to pose herself in such a way that appeared titillating because the intended audience was male.
  66. jules, on January 27th, 2009 at 9:33 am
    Nice post. The core issue, again for Obots, and why they appear insanely hypocritical to us PUMA, is for Obots, it’s never what someone does. It’s all about who they are.
    So two different people can do the same thing, but the Obot reaction is completely dictated by who the doer is in each case. PUMA is coming from the opposite view. We care about what you do, more than who you are . It’s the old story of ” good works vs selection” and its always a heated argument .
  67. I want our government to be a meritocracy where hiring and promotions are based on education, experience and job performance, not physical attractiveness, personal relationships or sexual favors.
    I want our government to maintain a work environment that is free of any hint of impropriety, so that if a former underwear model gets hired you know it had to do with her resume and not her portfolio.
  68. I don’t know. This doesn’t sit well with me. First of all, why the lingerie shot? To show that Campoverdi was an underwear model? Then talk about that. Should she have been one? Are underwear models “bad”? Does Ms. Campoverdi purport to be a feminist, making her career selection as an underwear model fair discussion fodder?
    Or are you trying to show that someone like Favreau would OF COURSE date an underwear model, because … underwear models are … fill in the blank for me, please. Do you object to his dating an attractive woman? Do you object to his dating an underwear model? Because I don’t think you can object to Favreau’s choice here without maligning the woman. The message seems to be, “Look what kind of woman HE dates! Doesn’t it figure! HE dates a (slut? bimbo? what?)”
    Are you objecting Favreau’s hiring his girlfriend to work at the White House? Did he hire her? Or did they meet at work?
    Are you saying that someone who exercise (in my opinion) poor judgment in being photographed semi-nude for a soft porn men’s magazine isn’t fit to work at the White House? If so, why? She has a degree from Harvard. Does her posing as an underwear model make her stupid, or unfit?
    In trying to emphasize Favreau’s misogyny, I think you’re getting tripped up in some dangerous areas here. You can’t trash Favreau’s choice in a girlfriend without also trashing the woman who is his girlfriend.
  69. And the Obots made fun of Palin for being too pretty? Women can obviously be both attractive and smart, but Ms. Campoverdi was once a Maxim lingerie model. It isn’t surprising that she was on the fast track to becoming a VIP in Washington. Of course, this is all and good with most of the frat boys who support Favreau on facebook. This just proves that he’s really cool and now all boys will now want to be like him. He can insult Hillary Clinton, date a Maxim model, and write mediocre speeches for the Messiah. This doesn’t surprise me in the least. Favreau is the kind of guy who needs to have a beautiful lady who has shown off her rockin’ body to the world on his arm.
  70. Tinfoil Hattie:
    I count 17 questions in your comment, most or all of which were either previously addressed or are premised on strawmen.
  71. tinfoilhattie: Would you have the same degree of indignation at these comments had Eliot Spitzer’s call girl friend was appointed to a job in the WH? Or is it the Harvard degree you admire that excludes her from criticism?
  72. Ew, young people having hot sex! Oh god, that’s misogynist!
    And that woman is so naked and sexy! It’s so fucking disgusting and gross….where’s my box of mini Oreos! Let me shove these cookies down my throat and bitch and moan about everything.
  73. Are underwear models “bad”?
    Would it make a difference if she was a Playboy centerfold, a stripper, Nevada prostitute or a porn star?
    All of those are legal occupations. Are we supposed to completely non-judgmental about such things? Or where is the line?
  74. The Harvard Degree.
  75. Would you have the same degree of indignation at these comments had Eliot Spitzer’s call girl friend was appointed to a job in the WH?
    Why yes, yes I would, since the objective seems to be slut-shaming.
    And no, I don’t worship anyone simply because she has a degree from Harvard. My point is that since she has a degree from Harvard, that too might be worth as much consideration as her underwear photos from 5 years ago.
    I just don’t get the point of this post. It’s not surprising Favreau dates an underwear model because… I’m still waiting for someone to fill in the blanks.
    I asked my questions because I call out sexism where I see it. Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton, Ms. Campoverdi.
    All of those are legal occupations. Are we supposed to completely non-judgmental about such things? Or where is the line?
    Are we supposed to use said occupations as a way to slut-shame women, to put them down, to sneer that they are somehow “less than” other women?
  76. Jeebus Crickets. Why is this so hard for some folks to grasp?
    Favreau, like much of ObamaNation, objectifies women. And, don’t be fooled, it’s all disparaging. Even the ones they condescend to hang out with. They don’t have any more “respect” for them (degree or not) than they have for Hillary or Palin. Women are objects to be ridiculed and/or used. Some women willingly buy into this. And in doing so they become part of the problem.
  77. It’s not surprising Favreau dates an underwear model because…
    . . . he’s a sexist pig.
    Are we supposed to use said occupations as a way to slut-shame women, to put them down, to sneer that they are somehow “less than” other women?
    I don’t know, are we? I take it that you have no problem with prostitution and porn?
  78. I have lots of problems with porn and prostitution, all having to do with their effects on the women in those “professions” and the side effects they have on all women and girls.
    You are still not answering my question: Why is it necessary to post a photograph of Ms. Campoverdi in her underwear in order to prove that Jon Favreau is a sexist?
    Punish the patriarchy, not the woman.
  79. “It’s not surprising Favreau dates an underwear model because…
    . . . he’s a sexist pig. ”
    I don’t see why this means you need to post a picture of a woman in her underwear. It feels really slut-shamey to me, too.
    I feel like you’re saying her only possible value is that she is a slut/has a model’s body. The fact that she underwear-modeled doesn’t mean that isn’t smart, kind, caring, compassionate, and funny, so saying that dating her proves anything about Favreau is sort of illogical and weird. It doesn’t prove anything.
  80. Women are objects to be ridiculed and/or used. Some women willingly buy into this. And in doing so they become part of the problem.
    Aaah. Now we’re getting down to it. How DARE this woman succumb to patriarchy! She is a HORRIBLE person. She’s not like me, because I am MARRIED and have CHILDREN and therefore I don’t … um .. succumb to patriarch — … uh, wait. Yes, I do, because ALL WOMEN DO.
  81. Why is it necessary to post a photograph of Ms. Campoverdi in her underwear in order to prove that Jon Favreau is a sexist?
    I just wanted to tittilate the ladies here.
    Maybe if young women knew that posing in their underwear for a magazine would have a negative effect on their future job prospects they wouldn’t strip down.
    And you still haven’t answered my questions
  82. I think most people have the same view of whores, male or female, regardless of gender. It’s not something you want your son or daughter to grow up to be.
    “Slut-shaming” usually has to do with a woman’s sexual appetite and when having one is considered “slutty.” It doesn’t usually, in my mind, have to do with making a career out of selling one’s body. And I really have to wonder at the tr0llish behavior of injecting such a straw woman.
  83. I don’t know, are we? I take it that you have no problem with prostitution and porn?
    I agree with Tinfoil. And I do have a problem with implying that women who have been involved in prostitution and porn can’t ever go on to be hired in more productive jobs, and deserve respect. I also think it’s disgusting that now you’re associating Campoverdi with prostitution and pornography because she did a lingerie shoot years ago.
  84. I feel like you’re saying
    I feel that you’re wrong about what I’m saying.
  85. “I also think it’s disgusting that now you’re associating Campoverdi with prostitution and pornography because she did a lingerie shoot years ago.”
    I was responding to this:
    Are underwear models “bad”?
    Are nude models bad? Are porn stars?
  86. “I feel like you’re saying
    I feel that you’re wrong about what I’m saying.”
    Please tell me how.
  87. It’s a complete contradiction to object to the girl’s underwear photo as, um, “slutty” and then complain about her being called names when you are the one who is calling her the name. Wow. The tr0lls are out in force and really providing some, um, interesting comic relief.
  88. We don’t know much about this girl, except that she has terrible taste in boyfriends.
    I won’t judge her for modeling underwear.
    I just don’t think it’s a big deal, or relevant to anything.
  89. Are nude models bad? Are porn stars?
    Women are complex individuals who shouldn’t be labeled “bad” because of a profession they are involved in long-term or temporarily. Are women who wear high heels “bad”? What about women who wear skirts?
    Is a woman less bad to you if she gets into porn because she’s literally starving, and is then trapped in part because people can’t ever see her as anything but a porn star? I WONDER WHERE THAT ATTITUDE COMES FROM.
  90. Please tell me how.
    Because that’s not what I’m saying
  91. Aaah. Now we’re getting down to it. How DARE this woman succumb to patriarchy!
    Yes. Indeed. Now we’re getting at it! Tinfoilhattie is a concern tr0ll. And an anti-feminist to boot.
  92. I think most people have the same view of whores, male or female, regardless of gender. It’s not something you want your son or daughter to grow up to be.
    Wow.
    Maybe if young women knew that posing in their underwear for a magazine would have a negative effect on their future job prospects they wouldn’t strip down.
    Double-wow with a Hooolllleeee Shit on top.
    And you still haven’t answered my questions.
    Well, I have, but you’re not listening.
    And you have answered mine, quite clearly. Thanks.
  93. “Concern troll.” Usually I’m called a bitch, a cunt, or a big fat lesbo feminist for my views.
    Aah, well, can’t please everyone. It’s hard being an un-fun feminist these days.
  94. Is a woman less bad to you if she gets into porn because she’s literally starving, and is then trapped in part because people can’t ever see her as anything but a porn star? I WONDER WHERE THAT ATTITUDE COMES FROM.
    Are you saying in this day and age that the only path to money is porn if you’re a woman … there are a lot more options available than that … they just aren’t as lucrative, and it’s a choice … you can wait tables and earn enough money to eat or you can flash your tits and get a nice pravda bag while you’re at it …
  95. Well, I have, but you’re not listening
    No, you haven’t, and until you do you’re done here.
  96. Does one get paid to wear high heels?
  97. Dakinikat, are you suggesting that women never get into porn out of desperation and that most or all pornography actresses make good money?
    Please read up on the way that some (maybe many) porn stars get little money and are pushed to do more and more “extreme” shoots until they are considered unfit for safer vanilla pornography.
    And how again is porn even relevant to a conversation about a woman who works in the white house and happens to date a jerk?
  98. I think she’s part of the ‘framing’. Because I’d put money down he’s gay.
    And you should grow so old to have tinfoil hattie’s feminist creds, you noob.
  99. Astraea: I think we can agree in Thailand, there’s not much choice for a woman that has to support herself and her family, but in the US you got options …
    the number of women in the porn industry that come from whacked families and addiction problems explains a lot, but women that choose to objectify themselves because the cash is a lot better than waiting tables, I want no part of
  100. “Now we’re getting at it! Tinfoilhattie is a concern tr0ll. And an anti-feminist to boot.”
    The one defending the woman in this situation is the anti-feminist? Not the one who posts 5-year old pictures of the woman in her underpants pretending that says anything of the woman’s character or qualifications for a job?
    I see.
  101. dakinkat:
    I’m guessing our visitors were some of the “feminists” who called Sarah Palin a c*nt and a bimbo.
  102. Go read my f’ing blog if you think I’m one of those “feminists.”
  103. megankay: let’s talk about making good decisions and showing some good judgement here … what does it say when your choice is to promote the male ideal of sexuality to make money unless there are some kind of underlying problems in your life?
  104. You’re wrong on that score, myiq. And if you can’t see the utter irony in your comment — you, who are slut-shaming this woman — then why do you call yourself a feminist?
  105. 5-year old pictures of the woman in her underpants
    What’s wrong with the picture? It’s a picture of Ms. Campoverdi, and she willingly posed for it.
    If she did nothing wrong by posing for it, why is it wrong to post it?
  106. Just so you all know…Bluelyon is not a tr0ll. She is the real deal and her objections come from a real place.
    Don’t know about anyone else.
    Personally, I don’t find this a big deal either. I wouldn’t consider it a worthwhile story.
    Keith Obamaman dates beautiful young women too. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were fame-seekers as well. Do I care? No. It’s pretty well-established that Keith “take Hillary in a room with a delegate and only he comes out” is a misogynist of the first water.
    Just sayin’.
  107. I am suggesting that a lot of women get into porn out of desperation … usually emotional problems, abuse history, addiction history ….
    i’d like to know this woman’s reasons ….
  108. “If she did nothing wrong by posing for it, why is it wrong to post it?”
    Oh. WOW. I didn’t realize just how totally out of it you are. I’m sorry.
    “megankay: let’s talk about making good decisions and showing some good judgement here … what does it say when your choice is to promote the male ideal of sexuality to make money unless there are some kind of underlying problems in your life?”
    Who is to say there weren’t underlying problems? Why are we judging her for this thing she did once, five years ago, when we don’t know the reasons behind it?
  109. Considering that she was either attending Harvard or a recent graduate I doubt that she was desperate and starving.
    No one twisted her arm and made her try-out for reality television either.
  110. Thanks, myiq2xu, for letting me know that slut shaming is now totally feminist!
  111. Yes. And perhaps even friends of the young lady in question since they seem really bent out of shape about the photo of her in her underwear.
  112. and for the record, I consider underwear modelling of this type to be softporn
  113. megankay:
    We have rules about insulting other commenters here.
  114. i don’t know many folks that come real desperate situations that get to go Harvard and then come out and get white house jobs …
    i’d be really interested in the details behind all of this, frankly, i’d like to know her reasons
  115. My question is what is on her resume? That resume got her a job at the White House fer gods sake. I hear underwear model, game show contestant and Harvard Kennedy school of business. But what is her real work experience for the job? Who hired her? What are her duties. Yep, I want to know these things. Why? Because this is my government and if the frat boyz are partying, I want to know if they are also doing the job.
  116. TinfoilHattie has a long comment history at many, many feminist blogs. So does Megankay. I have a blog of my own you’re welcome to peruse that shows I’m very involved in feminism.
    I guess we’re trolls for being too feminist and not blaming women for the patriarchy.
  117. if she came out of a desperate situation where she had to do softporn then rose to going to Harvard , she needs to be a movie of the week
  118. Be sure to drop by Tennessee Guerilla Women and tell Egalia how wrong she is for posting the same picture.
  119. and Im not using perjorative words like slutty …
  120. If posting the picture is wrong then there must be something wrong with the picture, which includes her posing for it.
  121. If posting the picture is wrong then there must be something wrong with the picture, which includes her posing for it.
    No, that is not the only logical conclusion. Something is wrong with the reason it’s posted.
  122. Is the rule that women can use their bodies to try to get ahead, and if it works out that’s great but if it doesn’t then no harm no foul?
  123. “Is the rule that women can use their bodies to try to get ahead, and if it works out that’s great but if it doesn’t then no harm no foul?”
    Yes.
  124. No, that is not the only logical conclusion.
    So there is nothing wrong with the picture itself, or for her posing for it?
    The only thing wrong is my motive for posting it?
  125. You keep moving the goalposts and creating false either-or arguments, myiq2xu. The problems with posting the picture are that you are reducing this woman to a “sexpot” much in the same way Palin was during the elections. Palin also in some ways colluded with patriarchy, but as feminists you know that she shouldn’t be ridiculed for her looks just because she wears high heels or tight skirts.
    Many supposed feminists during the election claimed that Palin was deliberately trying to benefit from her looks and her sexuality. Mostly this came from the fact that these so-called feminists didn’t like her politics or her party. You are doing the same thing! Just because you don’t like her boyfriend and her boss and because she has done something not very feminist, you are saying she deserves to be reduced to her body, ridiculed and considered unfit for her job.
  126. The problems with posting the picture are that you are reducing this woman to a “sexpot” much in the same way Palin was during the elections.
    I don’t recall hearing about Governor Palin posing in her underwear for a men’s soft-core porn magazine.
  127. Astrea: check this out:
    http://tinyurl.com/ansjcs
    this woman appears to have voluntarily reduced herself to her body to get a hollywood career and since that failed she switched to something else
    that kind of thing is bound to haunt you
    and if she had a college degree in 2001, i doubt she was in a desperate situation, she just appears shallow if that’s her bio, she self-promoted herself in that light, what’s the excuse for that?
  128. Just because you don’t like her boyfriend and her boss and because she has done something not very feminist
    Are we slut-shaming Favreau when we post the picture of him groping the cardboard cut-out of Hillary? Are we slut-shaming Obama when we post pictures and clips of him insulting and denigrating Hillary and Sarah?
    But you keep dodging the questions:
    Is there something wrong with the picture itself?
    Was she wrong to pose for it?
    If there is nothing wrong in posing for these kind of pictures then why is it wrong to post it?
  129. OMG! WE are moving the goal posts? Do you even know what that means? This woman POSED for this photo — it is available ALL OVER THE INTERNET. It is NOT our reproducing it here that is the problem, nit wit. If you don’t understand that then I suggest you start down the yellow brick road in search of a brain.
  130. From Dakinikat’s link:
    Hometown: Santa Monica, California.
    Hardscrabble family history: “My stepfather… went from a childhood picking grapes in California fields to a degree from Stanford Law School.”
    Leg up: Before graduating high school in 1998, performed in a performing-arts mentorship program. She likely had designs on nearby Hollywood, judging from her later work.
    College: Graduated from USC in 2001 in an early sign she was on a fast track through life.
    Wow, her step-father is a Stanford Law alum and she grew up in Santa Monica before attending the University of Spoiled Children.
  131. I think this says it all:
    “Is the rule that women can use their bodies to try to get ahead, and if it works out that’s great but if it doesn’t then no harm no foul?”
    Yes.
    And with that, this thread is closed
