When did mean and vicious become “funny?”

 icepick_new_year

The picture above was posted on New Year’s Eve at a blog called Rumproast by the blog owner, “Kevin K.”  The picture is titled “icepick_new_year.”  It was taken from a video posted today at Wonkette by managing editor and part-owner Ken Layne.  At both blogs the picture/video were treated as “humor.”  The comment threads speak for themselves:

Ok, I wasn’t going to start drinking for another couple of hours.  First beer cracked upon setting my eyes upon that horror.

and

It’s like her face is trying to get away from her body. That is so cool and gross.

Earlier today, a “Wonktard” (their expression) had this to say about Wonkette:

“. . . their rapid-fire satire and off-the-cuff riffing is without equal in the blogosphere and is some of the most hysterically funny political commentary I or my friends have ever read.”

Molly Ivins was the funniest liberal who ever lived, bar none.  Here’s what she said (emphasis mine):

There are two kinds of humor. One kind that makes us chuckle about our foibles and our shared humanity — like what Garrison Keillor does. The other kind holds people up to public contempt and ridicule — that’s what I do. Satire is traditionally the weapon of the powerless against the powerful. I only aim at the powerful. When satire is aimed at the powerless, it is not only cruel — it’s vulgar.

Vulgar is right.

The woman in the picture and video is not an elected official.  She is not wealthy or powerful.  She never hurt anyone.  So why do Rumproast and Wonkette feel she deserves mockery and scorn?

Because she is woman, a PUMA and a supporter of Hillary Clinton.

How can someone who claims to be a liberal or progressive have so much hate in their hearts for the weak and powerless?  How can they have so little empathy, pity, or shame?

By the way – Rumproast is a 2008 Weblog Award finalist for “Best Small Blog.  Wonkette is a 2008 Weblog Award finalist for “Best Liberal Blog.”

I hope their parents are proud.

  1. This is the lesson of Obama’s victory: Women are fair game.

BTW – I would close comments on your previous post, Myiq. Some people clearly have nothing better to do than post “neener” 800 times on someone else’s blog.

  2. What the hell does “neener” mean anyway?

  3. ‹^› ‹(•¿•)› ‹^›

    So funny

  4. That should sit on the top of the Front Page at all times.

  5. their minds have not progressed past the eighth grade.

  6. “What the hell does “neener” mean anyway?”

“My father should have worn a condom”

  7. Snickering never loses its cache when you are 14!

  8. myiq: I just spit a mouthful of Mountain Dew onto my screen!!!

  9. madam

I was gonna play kick the troll.

    Nor,

You may have voted for Obama for his appearance. I voted for Palin because the group she was involved in was instrumental in getting the Child Enforcement Act passed. It was intrumental in getting the Domestic Violence Act passed. It is actively working on getting legislation passed that will give young women in college who choose to have their children aid so they can complete their education to give themselves and their child a better life. You may be shallow. I am not. I voted for Palin because her actions and her words matched which is more than I could say for Obama.

  10. That’s jenniforhillary from pumaPAC.

They’ve been mocking her for ages, but she’s not the person you want to pick a fight with.

  11. LOL @ your definition of neener

  12. they are crude viscious people who do not have a shred of integrity.

this is the what Barack Obama has brought us all.

a bunch of people in it to win it at any cost. Their learned from their “leader” well.

I’m sure BO is very proud. He done teached you good.

  13. MarieCeleste:

    I know who it is.

    She deserves respect, not mockery.

    Especially from those cretins.

  14. Hey we don’t need blog candy!!!!

Apparently Wonkerbutts love to cut and paste. I guess that is all they are capable of.

  15. By the way – Rumproast is a 2008 Weblog Award finalist for “Best Small Blog.

Thanks for the tip on that one iq. I didn’t know who to vote for on Best Small Blog. Now I know who to vote against.

  16. CWaltz – Consider the tr0ll kicked!

This is, after all, a WAR, and we cannot shrink from using our superior weaponry!!!111!!!

  17. It’s “The Lord of the Flies” thing. Or a “Mean Girls” thing. Once upon a time the vast majority of these people were good decent folk. But the winds of change (ahem, sorry about that) blew and these good decent folk got an opportunity to join the cool crowd. We’ve seen time and time again in the history of humanity that people will join in all kinds of viciousness and dementia to feel like they are part of the group. I don’t know what authority figure can swoop in and make them feel shame.

  18. LOL myiq — like those morons have parents — at least not any that would claim them.

  20. Fredster:

If you look, you’ll see that Captain Spaulding made a recommendation in that category.

    He doesn’t like scumbags either.

  21. Fredster — I recommend that you vote for Nice Deb for best small blog.

  22. DYB,

    LOL “Lord of the Flies”

Forgivable if they were children stranded in the middle of some island and did not have choices. The use-by date on the idiot-etts at Wonker off expired ages ago.

  23. Thanks Angie and iq. I’ll wait and vote for Nice Deb when I can vote (honestly) again for us.

  24. afrocity> But most of them are children! And it’s neither forgivable nor excusable nor explainable nor justifiable.

  25. I understand that not everyone agrees with me. Some are to my left, but most are to my right.

I expect cogent argument and rebuttal, not “You’re fat and ugly”

  26. myiq2xu:

Don’t get all huffy with me, you big homo.

I was just trying to help.

  27. Today is like a trip back in time. I haven’t seen comments like we’ve had since Convention week when I was deleting 90 comments an hour.

  28. myiq – You may expect those things, but what you’ll get is:

    “neener neener neener”

They’re just not capable of anything else right now.

Give it six months. The Roe-Hopenol should be wearing off by then.

  29. I’m fat, but I’m gorgeous

  30. “Don’t get all huffy with me, you big homo.”

I hope you mean “homo sapiens” cuz I’m a flaming hetero.

You’ll get Angie upset if you suggest otherwise.

  31. Mawm:

    You lying studmuffin!

  32. Katie: Sorry about the mixup. When I referred to The Elegance of the Hedgehog, I meant the charming novel by Muriel Barbery.

  33. you go, mawm!
    (hey who nuked mawm?)

  34. Don’t worry everybody! I took out Marie with my first shot from the arrows that Mawm made. It’s easy when they are such LARGE targets.

No, we’re not including him in our club. He’s hopelessly hetero. ;-)

  36. Mawm ♥, I was just going through my photos and found the pictures of your visit with me last summer — you’re HOT! xxoo ♥

  37. The average poster at Wonkette begins sentences with:

    “Um, so like.. ”

    This is hilarious.

  38. Myiq,

I will try to stay on your good side.

  39. “BenSmith” (If you really are BenSmith) I wasn’t the one who tried to find that book.

When people talk down to me I don’t much care about what they say.

  40. Seriously? This photo was posted on their blog? And the blog that this photo was posted on is leading in the “Best Liberal Blog” category?

    hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

What a bunch of idiots! Who give a crap about the award then, anyway? If all you have to do is to be nominated and then get a bunch of these fools to vote for you, the award is meaningless, just like the people who would post and respond to stuff like this.

  41. afrocity:

You would have to try pretty hard to get on my bad side, and even then angie would smack the crap outta me if I was rude.

  42. Okay, at one time I could hardly stand to listen to Ann Coulter and couldn’t imagine why anyone would buy her books (which just by their titles, seemed very mean spirited). Then, during the primaries there were times when she started to make sense to me. I still don’t really appreciate her sense of humor, and she’s obviously as anti-liberal as one can get.

Anyway, I watched a clip of her interview with Harry Smith on the morning show, and found myself fuming at his patronizing and dismissive attitude. He reached out and attempted to pat her on the knee, while saying, “do you want to be taken seriously.” It just brought back to mind how dismissive Charlie Gibson was during his interview with Palin, and I don’t think it is healthy for us as a society to witness women (no matter their political persuasion) being treated so dismissively.

There seems to be this attitude that women can just be patted on the knee and told to take a deep breath and stop getting so excited, everything is okay. (It’s like the men feel the need to put these women in their place, and their place is wherever these men deem it to be.)

I see a direct attitudinal link between the dismissive manner in which Coulter was treated and the mocking of the PUMA in the photo.

  43. Another thing I was thinking about the vile comment from Wonkette about old dried up vaginas is: how would their mothers, grandmothers, aunts feel if they knew this is how they see them, talk about them? Is this how they feel about all older women who gave birth to them, raised them, loved them? Utterly devoid of respect and humanity. It’s ok though–life will humble them, and what will they do?

    Cry for their mothers.

  44. Not sure what we would learn about the Wankettes from the novel though, Ben.

I want to save them for a future post.

  46. RD, I think what they are doing to your poll truly sucks. It feels like we are watching the Democratic caucuses again.

  47. That was my first trip to Wonkette, it was also my last. How they think insults = discourse is beyond me. And they seem to think they are humorous and witty when they write this stuff, labeling their grade school level comments as “satire.”

    And these people vote!

  48. MyIQ, I haven’t deleted anything from there. I rely on it as a library for my research.

No, the sad thing is they reproduce!

    fif, I wonder too

  51. I should say that I HAVE emptied the filter but not for the last couple of months…..

  52. I’m confused. There’s something different posted at that Rumproast link than the above pic. I’ll reserve further comment until I understand what’s going on.

  53. MyIQ, do you want me to keep moderating this post?

  54. For a liberal site, Wonkette’s post seem bound and determined to contradict “evolution theory.”

  55. New post up – I’m getting ranty!

  56. seraphiclight, on January 6th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Yep it’s changed. I guess after being called the shit heels that they are, they’ve changed it.

  57. Uppity

I wouldn’t sweat it. Like someone above said, if the award site considers the above “liberal” behavior worthy and laudatory then the title is pretty meaningless.

  58. Riverdaughter created The Confluence as a refuge, and I agree with her decision.

But occasionally we need a reminder (and a record) of why we moderate comments the way we do.

TC moderators see some putrid shit.

  59. What I can’t understand about these blog awards is why Sugar n’spice weren’t nominated. They were so good.
Some of the ones in the small blog category are such duds.

  60. So the liberals over at Wonkette have – ahem – progressed to gay bashing in addition to misogyny? With liberals like that, who needs liberals?

  61. What do you expect from Obamanation? From small minds come small ideas.

  62. Ah, now I see what happened. They replaced it with a screenshot from here to try to make it seem like what myiq posted about Ann Coulter was equivalent to their ridicule of the woman in the video. While I don’t agree with insulting Ann Coulter in sexual terms either, it’s a far cry from what they did.

  63. Another thing about awards and popularity: do we really need more evidence that what is popular to the masses has any correlation to intelligence, insight or quality? Quantity hardly equals quality anymore. It’s actually been that way throughout history, but is even more true today with the dumbing down of everything. Standards have been so eroded–people hardly read anymore or think analytically–that being validated by the hordes is hardly a reflection of true accomplishment or value. Prime examples: Bush was elected twice, followed by the man-child. Out of all the people in this country–this is what passes for excellence. Meanwhile, ask the average person on the street to name Nobel scientists or writers. But they can sure tell you who Jennifer Aniston is dating, and what Britney’s doing.

    Please keep moderating

  65. I just checked the spam filter … i think there’s some blogs spawing some kind of new disease … can brains get diarrhea?

  66. That’s the Regressive Movement for you.

  67. Starvation and suffering is funny only to ignorant people, and those who are ignorant are numberless.

  68. Wonkette- defender of Ann Coulter

or at least defender of Ann Coulter when they aren’t busy comparing her to people on this site, like Afrocity.

    The hilarity never ends.

  69. Ann Coulter- I always figured her biggest problem was she was saying terminally stupid things myself.

  70. Rumproast scrubbed their site?

I guess they do have some shame.

They took down a picture of a harmless woman they had posted for ten days, and replaced it with a picture that was posted here for ten minutes.

The woman they mocked was jenniforhillary from pumaPAC.

The woman I mocked (briefly) was Ann Coulter, a conservative icon, author and television personality.

“Satire is traditionally the weapon of the powerless against the powerful. I only aim at the powerful. When satire is aimed at the powerless, it is not only cruel — it’s vulgar.”

Who did I aim at, and who did they aim at?

Is Ann Coulter more or less powerful than me?

BTW – my graphic came from Bartcop, I didn’t make it myself.

As for the “Oh Noes!” Rumproasters, how did they react to the news about Ann Coulter breaking her jaw just before Thanksgiving?:

    http://www.rumproast.com/index.php/site/comments/i_was_totally_wrong_there_is_a_god/

    Kevin K = hypocrite

(go ahead Kevin, try to scrub that one too)

  71. So part owner (as opposed to full owner or even half owner) of Wonkette is someone named Ken Layne. Should he be recognized as Wonker or maybe Wanker if one wants to anglicize (make it high class). Perhaps Mr. Layne is trying to compensate due to the feminine and singular gender of his purchased internet endeavor. I mean he had to by it from a girl because he couldn’t make his own.

  72. I really feel sorry for the women in those wanker’s lives…

If they have any women in their lives.

  73. John Cain:

    You are a liar.

The comment thread at Rumproast proves it.

  74. First — I can vouch for the fact that myiq is a flaming hetro.
Second, why is it that these alleged “progressives” view calling someone a homosexual is an insult? Could it be that they are narrow-mined, small d*cked bigots? And they have the nerve to be p.o.’d that I call them by their accurate name: fauxgressives.

  75. You know darlin Puma sisters and brothers … sometimes being an internet radio station owner is a blessing , and sometimes it is a curse . Today for instance , when the server is being migrated to a new ip and we are silent , it is not any fun .
Your ears bleeding from listening to bad music is another disadvantage .
We play music from some great independent artists , but not everyone out there that fancies themselves a rock star or even a musican have what my good friend Carol , mother of Clint Lowery of Sevendust, and everyone else in the music biz call SKILLS .
Lots of people, even blog owners , try their hand at making their own CD and seeling on CD BABY , and even when have all their blog world friends give glowing reviews… does it disguise flat notes and music that sounds like it is being played by someone dragging a truck .
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Confluence … I give you
    KEN LAYNE AND THE CORVIDS

    http://cdbaby.com/cd/kenlayne

Corvid is the latin word for the bird family which includes crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, treepies, choughs and nutcrackers; more commonly the CROW family . Perhaps this name was chosen to appear erudite, ( don’t you hate that in a rock star? ) but as fate would have it , it seems to apply more to the sound produced by the lead singer and the band .
    BWAAHHAAAAHHHHHAAAA
This IS the guy from the Wonkette

  76. I have said a lot of things over the last couple years.

Some of them were not appropriate.

I take full responsibility for everything I have said, and I apologize to anyone I offended who didn’t deserve it.

I’m not proud of everything I’ve said, but when you consider the totality of what I have said, in the context of when, where and to whom I said it, I am not ashamed.

My targets have been trolls, bloggers at larger blogs, politicans, media personalities and people with more power than myself.

I don’t pick on the weak, like Kevin K and Ken Layne do. They can both kiss my botoxed balls.
