Caroline

Your lovely head very gently let down,
For it exists to be graced by a crown,
Only a mortal walks with his head bare,
Let a crown stand between yours and the air.

Our country has no literal throne,
The senate is the most you can own,
Let patience a noblewoman befit,
Like father, in the White House you’ll sit.

Mortals have campaigns and money to raise,
You only need avuncular praise,
Too long a modest raiment you’ve worn,
Accept the dignity for which you were born.

The sun exists to illuminate you
And the moon, lest the night hide you from view
We mortals your mere servants shall be,
At your whim, waiting incessantly.

A whole human race, which from Adam once grew
Exists to give bridesmaids and butlers to you.
A bow and a curtsy we learned long ago,
Gestures we’ll need to review, and to know.

If Uncle Ted thinks it be condign
No more is needed to fulfill the design
Than that you approach with reverence the throne
In a land made just for you to own.

The mystery of this world I will solve,
Around you it was made to revolve,
New genuflections prepare to receive,
While only the cynics still disbelieve.

A faint voice begged that it be heard,
Your conscience spoke an imperious word,
“Take not the bait!” it did implore,
You were admired, and might be no more.

  1. Harmless-the word whore is more than a little edgy…I think!

  2. I was following up until the second to last line.

i’m no expert in poetry interpretation and sometimes get the totally wrong meaning, but…..

  3. Oh for intrested parties tonight is steak night with the Obamabots….

Anyone got a zinger or to I drop on them like a Fart in Church?

I could use some help Myiq2xu and States and HeidiLi

They have been quiet last two weeks cause Pampers has not lived up to their expectations!

  4. Open thread.

  5. *hurls rotten tomato at johninca*

  6. I know john I was poking fun at the choice of words considering the politiical situation….

Looks like a lot of whoring has been going on with team Obama…

    I was not snarking ….

  7. I still don’t think i like it fuzzy. but hey i’m no creative artsy person.

  8. hey taggles there is a peice on Energy I wrote on the last thread about OPEC…I recommend it so we have an understanding of our current energy delema.

With out mentioning Pampers….he plays big on our countries next step to energy independence

  9. fuzzy
i wonder what your Obot friends will think of MO possibly getting a salary.
    good luck, drink heavily.

  10. Oh, boy. Here we go. Catarina *and* Taggles– this should be fun, provided I survive the afternoon.

Whoring was my metaphor for accepting the senate seat– for prostituting herself. I didn’t see anything wrong with it but I’ll be listening.

    *ducks rotten tomato*

  11. “Be grateful that your name’s not Tucker
Or more people might be saying…”

I’m no poet, just my 2 cents.

  12. tell your friends when you meet them that you are sure the blagojevich chicago corruption drama won’t follow Obama into his second term.

  13. I dunno, John.
    It made me cringe.
I thought about that asshole, whatshername-the Air America person…Randi Rhodes?
Screaming that HRC was a “whore”
    not a pleasant flashback.

  14. I see your point taggles but Team Obama seems to ooze it….

My mother asked my brothers about 28 years ago what was the female equivilant of the word “Stud” was…

My less enlightened brother said mom we call a girl who is a stud a “whore”.

She slapped him…I never like that word…I have a fried who says a word the patriarchy uses to control the carnal desires of women.

    I agree!

  15. Now wait a minute– Catarina. It’s hard enough for me to be blamed for things *I* said, but I really think it’s too much to be blamed for everything Randi Rhodes ever said.

  16. Of course I remember Hillary having that word tossed at her I have to hurl a tomato to….

    sorry

  17. memo to johninca– make sure not to call in to Sheri’s show for a couple of weeks. *wink*

  18. second term Obama? please tell me it aint gonna happen…

  19. actually I think randi said “f-ing” whore

  20. it’s a shitty word johninca
can you change the last two lines of the poem?
there must be other words that rhyme with *more*…

  21. taggles he is still “Bag o Chips” right?

  22. don’t really like this poem…

    posted this down below:

Cannot we all donate a Christmas gift to SM?

I would like to do that if someone can put up a paypal button. We Pumas should be taking care of our own.

  23. no but they think it will and you can assure them the scandal will atleast last him his entire first term.

  24. oh yeah, salt and vinegar bag o chips

  25. right john
randi said *a big fucking whore* or something like that

isn’t there any other word that rhymes with more?

  26. john i’ll be on the air tonite. give it a try. I will be filling in for BJ on PURrrrrr at 9pm est. tonight.

    http://www.blogtalkradio.com/no-we-wont

call in and and tell me what artistic law dictates that I have to find your interpretation of Caroline Kennedy as a whore, as ok.

  27. is there no other word that rhymes with *more*?
    sigh

  28. is there no other word that rhymes with *more*?

    sore?

    (very cautiously)

I’m not sure that sounded the way I meant it. Let me think about starting over.

  29. thanks taggles-I am stunned that these OBOTS think Obama hung out with these corrupt chicago machine polititians and none of this rubbed off on him.

I mean really some one needs to drop this W.O.R.M. in the tequilla laced Koolaid and make them swallow it!

  30. well yesterday Kim and I discussed how Obama was Political Herpes to every politian he touches….so john Sore may be an ok word….

Obambi must have got the Political Herpes from Bag o chips and Rezko!

  31. Taggles get a mental picture of that for your Obama scrap book!

  32. john
did you know i’m a tomato grower?
its winter here now but i have jars in the basement and freezer..

  33. eeewwwww NO Thanks!

  34. I feel our talking about Caroline is tame compared to what we will see and hear in the coming years. Pelosi is already serving notice that no one shall try to out do her. These people will fight amongst themselves…we will have lots to hear and see. Most of us will bless the day when we did not vote for the empty suit.

  35. Somebody tell taggles I’m scheduled to be feeling a little faint right around 5 pm Pacific time. In fact I feel a little faint right now…

  36. john, thats fine you can stay here with me
did you know im a tomato farmer?

  37. I wonder what kind of senator caroline will make?

  38. No, Catarina, I did not know you’re a tomato farmer.

Given some of the exchanges we have had, I was sort of hoping you’re the kind of person who can be induced to forget a bad first impression– perhaps by a poem , or a compliment, a gesture, anything.

Are you? Please tell me something about yourself…

  39. Pelosi is such a weak speaker ‘impeachment” was her power card on 1 Jan 2006…when she took impeachment off the table she basically gave away the one ace she had and the next 2 years were directionless!

  40. I love tomatos…they are good for you and were originally called “love apples”…they were also thought to be poisonous because they are related to the nightshade plant…

They were an american fruit Aztecs cultivated them on floating gardens in the lakes around their capital with peppers and onions…they were a food reserved for royality and the upper classes….originally they were never eaten with the common tortia…so no salsa and chips for the aztecs!

  41. Well time for Steak with the Obots….I must gird my loins here….

I have a good line to drop on them about “bag o chips” and I can remind them that Gates will stay on as sec def….

I have am actually feeling good for once!

  42. OT…Ruh..Roh..

Sneed hears rumbles President-elect Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, is reportedly on 21 different taped conversations by the feds — dealing with his boss’ vacant Senate seat!

    A lot of chit-chat?”

  43. I love tomatoes too, they’re the main vegetable I live on, especially salsa. I’m really fanatical about salsa but love tomato soup too.

  44. mmmm-Obama will have to worm again!

looks like I go to dinner tonight and I have some good material thanks all please if you have time on the last thread I wrote a wonkish almost hillariesque analysis of the current attempt by OPEC to control oil prices.

Take a moment to read it I hope Dakini will look at the economice of our energy delemia and Obama’s plan to fix it.

I am off see you all later !

  45. whore – bore? Princess Caroline is certainly a big bore.

  46. john

I truly believe that zero tolerance for sexism and misogyny is necessary in order for things to change.

I’m sure not everyone here shares my opinion but calling women whores and you know, that other word that made me flip a few weeks ago is not OK IMO.

About me…well, an ice storm knocked my power out last Thursday and it was restored just this morning.
I’ve been sort of trapped here feeding the woodstoves to keep my greenhouse and pipes from freezing , so
now that I have heat again I’m going out to dinner. Free at last!

    Have a great night, all.
I’ll check for changes to the poem when I return.. :-)

  47. lol DYB not to mention a SNORE

  48. i think the dems in the house just might be talking about changes. nancy wore out her welcome with many long ago. they know she is very unpopular with the rest of the country. i also believe she is trying to “handle” the one and i rather expect he doesn’t like that. i mean after all she is woman though she seems to have forgotten when it was convenient.

  49. Catarina–

I am not calling women whores. I don’t even like the word, to tell you the truth, although it does appear in great writers like Shakespeare. I really think that if you look at how I interact with women here, I try to be deeply respectful but have a highly archaic way of speaking that can at times lead to… ambiguities.

And I’ll tell you something else– I don’t believe I did anything wrong but even if I did, there’s no greater torment for an honest man than to have an awesomely good looking woman mad at him.

Now that is not meant in the flirting sort of way since I believe you’re taken, but just to clarify the parameters of discourse.

If you don’t know what that last line meant, I don’t either– I think it means let’s try to continue discussing this in a way that can make both of us proud.

  50. I’m not sure Caroline gets to have that seat. Did you hear the NY Gov’s response when asked about her? He asked, rhetorically, what her qualifications were. Doesn’t sound like he’s in Teddy’s pocket. And frankly given that Obama’s cabinet is basically a Clinton cabinet, I’m starting to think old Teddy’s been thrown under the bus like everyone else.

After all, from what we’ve seen from Obama, now that Caroline helped him get elected, um, what’s in it for Obama to help her now. Obama’s motto, or maybe it should be on his desk: “Thanks for helping me get where I am, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”

  51. To me, you are the poetic voice for the ‘commoner”. This is only meant as a compliment. Hope you aren’t some guy with an uppity ego. I love your poetry. It speaks to my heart.

  52. And frankly given that Obama’s cabinet is basically a Clinton cabinet,

Obama’s cabinet is not Clinton cabinet but Obama cabinet. He hired most of the people that backstabbed Hillary. These people supported him not her. They are Obama people now and that means anything bad that they do is on him not BC.

  53. Oh, and while I’m at it, ah, the old whore debate. I understand the problem some have with the loaded word. In artistic endeavors sometimes shocking things are needed. In this case I see the need for a very bold, very hurtful line to show the extreme feelings that surround someone well loved doing something that some feel is undeserved or underhanded or whatever. I think there is a lot of emotion wrapped up in how many people feel about Caroline, what she did during the campaign, and if she’s undeservedly handed such a position. Perhaps some of those feelings are actually residual feelings about Obama’s undeserved new position.

At the same time, in this context of this year with all the misogyny and sexism, that word jumps out for many people and does not have the effect strived for in the poem. Which means the poem and what is meant to be conveyed is lost on many people. In that case, I’d say rewording it to convey the same emotion, but with some language that does not relate to the gender of the subject would be better. That language change can’t be something as lighthearted as bore or snore of course. It has to be something just as powerful emotionally. Which probably means a bigger change.

You know, I wasn’t going to touch this with a 10 foot poll, but there I go… :-)

  54. Downticket, I agree that Obama’s cabinet are not Clinton people in terms of being loyal to or having the back of Hillary (or Bill). But they are Clinton people in terms of being from the Clinton wing of the party. And most importantly, they’re not Kennedy people from the Kennedy wing of the party. So my main point is that Obama has thrown Teddy under the bus too.

  55. That’s all right, DandyT, I’m right there with you.

This is a satire poem. It’s not Shakespeare; it’s not high drama. Under strict artistic integrity I personally might have preferred one term, but what’s the point if the purpose is to make people laugh and they’re offended instead. I rethought this because there’s no intrinsic reason for women to have to come here and be offended when it should be about laughing and having fun.

  56. catarina – you’ve got mail!

  57. I have to go change for “Tinfoil Hat Tuesday!!”

  58. She lost my respect when she said she was supporting Obama because her kids liked him and he was the new JFK. She also betrayed the first and best woman candidate for president in this country–and thus, all women.

Now she wants to find something to do as an empty nesting mom? The “audacity” is very distasteful. She should be embarrassed to ask for such a position with so little to warrant it–especially at the expense of others who have worked long and hard for the opportunity.

  59. Long-time reader, first time poster. Just wanted to say, cxcellent work johninca. Swift and Dryden would be proud. And hey, don’t be afraid to keep tweaking that last stanza. It’s all good!

  60. John, I hope you are saving all of your work , because you should be looking for a publisher :)

  61. Hey johninca – loved your poem. Maybe I need to evolve but if someone behaves in a fashion completely without integrity, selling themselves to best advantage then… well, then maybe we need to come up with a gender neutral word that accurately captures that behavior.

    I’m just sayin.

I think the tweaks worked out well. I read the poem first and thought it was nice of you to imagine that Ms. Caro has a conscience to call upon, however faintly, that has not long since been ruthlessly smothered. Then I read the comments and came to a deeper appreciation of the challenges facing the poet.

  62. Interesting Olive, apparently she really is a chip off the old block.
