Obama the Secret Progressive

doh1

Many years ago scientists in a top-secret progressive think-tank, seeing the ascendancy of Reagan conservatism, trained a young a young man to be a stealth candidate who would pose as a center-right moderate, so that once he was in office they could hatch their diabolical plan. From Chris Bowers:

According to Ambinder, hiring centrists and Republicans for top positions in the Obama administration actually means that Obama intends to govern in a clearly progressive direction. For Ambinder, Obama is hiring centrist and conservative advisors not to give their policy advice any credence whatsoever, but instead so that they provide public and political cover for a strongly progressive agenda which those advisors would personally oppose. It is another instance of the “secret progressive” theories, where doing something anti-progressive, like hiring all centrists and Republicans for top cabinet positions, is interpreted as actually pro-progressive.

Put down your sippy-kup Marc, and check this out:

A senior Obama campaign official shared with The Washington Note that in July 2008, the McCain and Obama camps began to work secretly behind the scenes to assemble large rosters of potential personnel for the administration that only one of the candidates would lead.

WE TOLD YOU SO!

  1. Obama’s “progressivism” must be the best-kept secret since “who killed JFK.”

  2. I gotta tell you, Obot heads apopping is fun. My Obot friend told me Barry has to sell out to get elected even if he wants to bring change. I had the pleasure of saying , yeah well he’s elected already . So why are the “sell outs ” coming even faster now??

    Ka-BOOM!!!!!

Obot grape favored brain matter peppers the walls!

It’s rare in life when the” I told you” so factor pays off so fast! Thanks Barry!

  3. Obotness is what happens when you worship a candidate rather than analyze him or her. We could have had a good discussion over which candidate was really more progressive, but the Obots would not hear any sentence that didn’t start with “Change! Hope! Clinton Sucks!”

    Pathetic.

  4. Remember when the littlest cheeto announced that Hillary wasn’t a Democrat?

Remember how she was gonna run as McCain’s running mate?

  5. myiq2xu,

I saw that Washington Note story at Corrente yesterday. I thought about blogging about it, but it was just too wierd for me to deal with. For you, nothing is too wierd. I still don’t think I have accommodated the results of the election.

  6. He is not going to spread the wealth.

Obama may delay tax-cut rollback for wealthy

    —–
President George W. Bush’s tax cuts are set to expire at the end of 2010. After that they would revert to 2001 levels, when the top individual tax rate was 39.6 percent.

Obama has called for reducing taxes for the middle class, but requiring the wealthiest Americans to pay more than the current top rate of 35 percent.

His aides’ comments suggest Obama may be wary of imposing any additional tax burden at a time of deep crisis, despite the outlook for record budget deficits and mounting national debt. He may also be seeking to bolster Republican support for his recovery measures.

  7. I cannot believe this f*cking *ssh0le isn’t going to raise taxes on the wealthy. Hello, we need real money in our Treasury. Bush totally bankrupted us. The FIRST THING Obama should do is to restore the Clinton tax rates for the wealthy.

And of COURSE he is pandering to the Republicans. He IS one.

  8. well, first comes denial, then comes anger …. so we’ll just watch them all go thru the phases

  9. Speaking of denial…this seems kinda prophetic now, doesn’t it?

  10. Tarnation myiq2xu! I NEVER go to Open Left and until today had not known that the cultish followers of Pres-elect Obama had adopted such an Orwellian stance toward interpreting his clearly relatively conservative approach. I realize the guy at Open Left doesn’t buy the Orwellian reading totally, but he’s still plenty annoying.

Eesh. So many of us were pointing out that his stance on various issues, ranging from faith based initiatives (separation of church and state anybody?) to women’s reproductive rights were more conservative than Senator Clinton’s.

  11. “The deep crisis” , will be used to rape and pillage the Treasury and what’s left of our life style for a long time to come. One of the reasons they wouldn’t give the Auto makers the relatively small potatoes of 25 billion and held them up for ridicule is they would have put some of the billions in their pension plan….
LORD HAVE MERCY!! We can’t have any of the funny bailout congress money going to…gasp! ….Workers!!

  12. Heidi Li,

To me the wierdest thing is that Obama and McCain were discussing personnel decisions with each other and making up joint lists of appointments well before either convention. Why did we ever think we lived in a constitutional republic with two parties?

  13. paper doll – They’ve given away 2 trillion already, and they won’t tell anyone where it went.

I’m guessing Halliburton, Bechtel and The Carlyle Group, myself. Gotta make sure George and Dick leave the White House with walking-around money. Those estates in Paraguay don’t come cheap!

  14. I’m waiting for Obama to propose a flat tax and abolishing the “death tax”

  15. yeah, well, arggh and lol, and arggh, and lol and…

It’s like trying to watch MIckey Mouse and pull the Band-aid off at the same time. It might be funny, but I’m not finding it relaxing.

  16. Oh, that “flat” tax would be on earned income only. Unearned income would be tax free under the Obama plan

Bye bye capital gains tax too

  17. Ooooh! Raygun’s greatest hits…will we have an Iraq-Afghanistan contra scheme?

  18. MadamaB,

I really think we should make you tube videos of some of your plays.

  20. To get the skinny on Barry , one only had to see he partied with Tony Rezko and accepted his help in buying a warm house, as Mr. Rezko’s tenets froze in slums . Now we will have the bitter fun of seeing the likes of The Nation threat to hold their breaths and stamp their feet until Barry returns to what they though he was .

  21. myiq2xu,

When is he going to start bankrupting the coal industry?

  22. The elderly will be asked to sacrifice their social security checks in order to pay for more golden parchutes for the investment banks.

    “Privatization”

  26. Here’s a thought: The online “progressives” knew exactly what they were getting. Its not like it wasn’t clear. Just like we shouldn’t cut W. Bush enablers (e.g. C*l*n P*w*ll) any slack for screwing us over, we shouldn’t cut any slack to the progressive enablers. They weren’t tricked. They are part of the problem.

  27. gqm:

    They SAY they knew.

Like Pee Wee Herman’s “I meant to do that”

  28. madamab, on November 24th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Honey, you know it. This scam is set up for years. It’s exactly like when the Mob takes over a restaurant, buys huge mounts of goods on the restaurant’s credit , sell the items , and then walk off after the establishments
    credit is utterly exhausted .

  29. GQ – I agree. I’ll never go back to those places. I have no respect for those people. I kind of don’t care if they were tricked or not – either way, they are a total disgrace.

  30. paper doll –

I love my country, but I hate my government. And that includes the not-so-new-and-improved-version of Bush that will be taking office in 2009.

  31. The only people I recall saying that Obama was not a progressive were Hillary supporters.

Well, the GOPers kept saying he was a socialist, but I never believed it.

  32. Obama can be summed up very easily by one of his personal stories: He filled out an endorsement form for a progressive group in the 1990s but essentially disowned those views during this campaign, saying he didn’t personally fill out the form. Any liberal who supported him after that had to have known his personality, or hated Hillary and/or McCain enough not to care about it.

  33. I guess I won’t bother reading Robert Kuttner’s book, since he is the author of this quote from Bowers’ piece:

As progressives, we can view President-Elect Obama’s emerging economic team in one of two ways. Either he has disappointed us by picking a group of Clinton retreads–the very people who brought us the deregulation that produced the financial collapse; the fiscal conservatives who in the 1990s put budget balance ahead of rebuilding public institutions. Or we can conclude that he has very shrewdly named a team of technically competent centrists so that he can govern as a progressive in pragmatist’s clothing–as he moves the political center to the left.

  34. So the “progressive” blogger Bot’s are falling all over themselves, trying their hardest and damnest best to convince themselves that this is the same Obama they thought they’d voted for. The state of denial is fun to watch as are the hilariously imaginative theories thrown out from their soooo agitated, precious minds.

  35. myiq2xu, on November 24th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Exactly…. they think they are so smart and it’s killing them they were fooled. Perhaps the on line Obots were on board, but the Obot on the street bought it
hook , line and sinker. Ouch

  37. BB – D’oh!!!

Aren’t people ashamed to write idiotic sh*t like that? I mean, what evidence does anyone have that Obama is going to move the political center to the left? What liberal legislation has he ever passed? What liberal principle has he ever stood by? What promises has he ever kept to liberals?

    [cricket cricket cricket]

  38. I can’t believe Bowers is trying to cover for his tail.

Man, these people just refuse to accept reality. Obama is not who they think he is.

    Morons!

It’s one thing ot realize you got had. It’s another to deny it. Prolong the pain if you wish.

    And who saw 24?

  39. madamab, on November 24th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

I’ve called Barry Bush 4.3 ever since it was clear the GOP swiftboats were NOT going to be put into the water . It’s amazing how the two requiems dove tail in corporate bliss.

  40. The Shakers got pissed at me earlier for suggesting that Teh Precious faked his religiousity

  41. madamab–As usual with at least one of the posts on The Confluence, when I click on “comments” my browser crashes. Unfortunately, today that post happens to be yours. I am so intrigued by the concept of mandated levels of women representatives in government that I hope you’ll do another post exploring that further. Affirmative Action for Women is my new creed.

Sorry for going off topic on a delightfully ironic post. Am really enjoying reading the comments on this one.

  42. I’m seeing two versions of “reality” in Obamaland:

    That guy is an idjit.

In philosophy, there’s a principle known as “inference to the best explanation”. It means that when you want to explain something you should not contort fact and logic but instead look for the simplest most natural explanation. Clearly people Kutner have no grasp on this idea.

  46. grayslady – Sorry! I don’t know why that happened, and I’m sorry you didn’t get to comment!

I’m sure it won’t be the last post on the subject.

    ;-)

  47. myiq–I’ve tried researching why that happens–only on WordPress, it seems. It’s driving me crazy.

LoL! I’m really grateful to Barry for the swiftness with which he has moved to sock it to the Obots. Because otherwise many more would have the time and opportunity to move to #2….when it’s a lie to cover the fact they were played .

  50. madamab,

Shhhhhh! Don’t tell anyone I told you this, but I think they believed Obama was progressive because of the color of his skin.

But those of us who were paying attention to the content of his character are r@cists….

  51. madamab–There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason. It’s nothing you did. It just happens at least once or twice a week with one of the posts during the day. It’s a mystery.

    Very funny.

  54. Grayslady,

I second madamab. We’ll be needing to do lots more discussion and planning about that. I hope the next time we have a real discussion of our goals, we can announce it ahead of time.

  55. Obots: non-standard logics

…after all the theme of this election is to exclude the middle……………….

  56. My personal opinion is that Obama does not have any deeply help ideological beliefs.

When it was convenient for him to be a socialist, he was a socialist. Then he hooked up with the corporatists and so now he does what they want.

  57. Obama is a lying sack of sh!t. And the obots just eat it up. I’ve been saying all along that it’s (as usual) the middle class who is going to be hung out to dry. The trick is whether the obots will remain in thrall and follow obediently along or whether they’re going to figure out that they’ve been completely f#cked and start to grumble.

  58. BB – LOL!

You should have heard me screaming at my friend last night after he told me Hillary Clinton wasn’t a “great American.” I said the exact same thing to him – the only thing Obama has going for him is the color of his skin.

  59. myiq, it’s part of the Obama “charm.” He’s everything to (almost) everyone. Even the evangelicals see him, and embrace him, as the bringer of the end times!

  62. bostonboomer, on November 24th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Why is everyone forgetting that the Clinton people Obama has hired are the ones that backstabbed Hillary. The last time these were Clinton people was in 2000. These are the people that backed Obama.

  63. myiq – I agree with that 100%. He pretty much admitted that in his book. Why would that type of person be appealing as President? I don’t get it.

  69. gxm17–I thought it was pretty much of a dead giveaway that, after John Edwards dropped out of the race, the only person in debates or stump speeches who continued to address the needs of the middle class and the poor was Hillary. That should have been a big clue to anyone concerned about where the candidates stood on the issues.

Obama only mouthed the right phrases early in the campaign. Hillary was the one to proudly pick up the mantle of the classic Democratic base.

  72. xax,

Actually, Bowers is criticizing the people that are fantasizing that Obama is a progressive. He never quite did the full koolaid transformation.

The one guy at Open Left that I can’t figure out is Paul Rosenberg. He never liked Obama. I don’t know how he has managed to stick it out there. He’s a really fine writer too.

  73. I’m being dragged away to movie night. It’s pure pandemonium here a monkey children central but things are finally calming down as bedtimes descends. I’ll try to check in tomorrow. Have a good night all.

  74. Even when Obama was a “socialist” he avoided as many votes as he could.

  75. hi Heidi … yup Nixonian. That’s spot on. He’s got some kind of pathology.

  76. Obama held down the football, and the whole BloggerBoyz team ran up to kick it.

It was so funny to see them all fly end over end when he pulled it back up that Obama just laughed and laughed!

And, after rubbing the bumps on their heads and scraping the mud off their clothes, the BloggerBoyz agreed that it was the best way to play the game, and the most fun they had ever had. Of course they knew what was coming! Pretending they didn’t was half the sport!

    And Obama laughed and laughed!

  77. I’m not buying the McCain story. Obama and McCain had words in the Senate – I don’t think there’s any friendship between them. McCain’s demeanor in the debates seemed to imply he intensely disliked the guy.

  78. Downticket, on November 24th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

True. Apparently knifing a Clinton means never having to say your sorry. In media land once Clinton people , always Clinton people I guess ….but few have resisted the siren song of the DC Beltway , who promise jobs and careers in return for the stabbing . What kind of career would the likes of Dee Dee Myers or George Stephanopoulos have with out betraying the Clintons? They would not get the weather gig in Topeka.

  79. grayslady:

But Obama was born poor and black so he must care about the little peoples!

    /snark

  80. Myiq,

I never thought Obama had any real value system. What I can’t figure out is if that was clear to me way back in January, why couldn’t the O-bots see it too? Oh the mysteries of koolaid.

  81. Night, gxm17. I hope it’s a good movie.

  82. BB – it wasn’t kool-aide with the boyz. Dollars to donuts it was cash.

  83. You know as crazy as it made sound – I don’t doubt it either. I really would like to know if some deal went down when Obama met with McCain or if that was just a symbolic gesture.

My feeling is that he won’t start really pissing people off until after his 100 days. I don’t think Obama wan’t any controversy from either side.

I’m glad he’s not going to raise taxes in this economy -I don’t think their is one economist our there that thinks that’s a good idea. I think he’s listening at least to some very pragmatic advice. But who knows what he’ll do.

  84. BB:

CDS, misogyny, asshattery – take yer pick

  85. bostonboomer, on November 24th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

The obots were and are in thier own movie. It’s all about them of course, Barry is but the projection screen. My Obot friend is shocked Barry isn’t Jackie Roberson….which to me is a type of rac**isam. But she would be further shocked by that notion

    Gotta makes the donuts, later

  86. I’ll be back later, I’m gonna go sleep off dinner watching SWII – Attack of the Clones

  98. Hi SOD! I see I popped into the 30% solution thread this morning & split after I started trouble! LOL Sorry about that — didn’t mean to do it, I just got super busy at work today (filed 2 bankruptcy petitions today — have one more this tomorrow & 1 on Wednesday). Not good news for the rest of us.

  99. DYB Chris Matthews is finding out how little power he has against Hillary….I hope he just drops dead!

  100. Seems it’s dinner time, angie. I’m just sitting here with my post-pasta glass of wine ready to chat and simultaneously doing small cooking things in advance of Thanksgiving. Having a computer in the kitchen is the best.

  101. Hi Fuzzy, Angie, MABlue!

How was Disney world, Fuzzy? Any big news to report?

  102. no trouble on the 30% thread. It’s an interesting topic worthy of more debate. Maybe we can “dish” on it. :)

  103. Angie,

You didn’t start trouble. You said exactly the right things!

  104. DYB, Chris Matthews making an ass of himself probably doesn’t qualify as “news” anymore, although, I admit, that story is another nail in his ultimate broadcaster coffin, I suspect.

  105. I have been having great fun taunting the Obot spouse with the neo-Clintonian cabinet. “Well well well, everything old is new again eh?”

  106. ugsome: here’s the new obot slogan
    “Change you can forget about.”

  107. bb — thanks! I’m glad you agree — I only don’ like that I dropped a comment that is kind of controversial without staying to defend it/discuss it.

SOD — that would be a great “dish” topic!

  108. SOD & ugsome — I saw a political cartoon (I think on Not Your Sweetie, but not sure) that said: “CHANGE! (. . .your expectations)”

  109. I’m leaving for a while — have to go do some work — will drop in later.

  110. Who is calling the shots on the cabinet and sub-cabinet nominees?
Obama has been running for office his whole career and is too lazy to do the homework on the issues and people. Axelrod? Podesta? Rahm?

  111. wow, you know what this reminds me of? when Bush starting really screwing up, on Free Republic they all thought it was a strategy. at first none of them could accept the fact that he was just not up to the job.

they used to say that he was playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers. yeah, ok.

I’m sure he had more fun with the box the chess set came in.

Absolutely, lol ! What would the utterly ordinary “newsman ” Judas Steph be were it not for Bill Clinton ! Its amazing as to how many people have used them as stepping stones to their own enrichment and stabbed them in the back. I read somewhere the other day that Judas Richardson must really love DC to give up a governorship to come back to serve in Commerce after already having served as Energy Sec and Ambassador to the UN !! Sucking up to Obama and knifing the Clintons was how he thought he could return.

Think what you may of Rahm Emmanuel but I think he is genuinely torn between his loyalty to the Clintons and his friendship with Obama. I remember him coming on the media talk shows towards the end of the Clinton presidency saying how he would “never forget” what Bill Clinton had done for him in terms of his career.

  115. Not to worry….Donna Brazille assures us Obama will “remain” progressive.

If a conservative had gotten ahold of him twenty years ago and offered him a way up the ladder he would be a Rep. now.

The only thing important to BO is BO. You only have to look at his record to see that. Anyone with true affection for blacks or Dem. ideals could not have used the tactics he did in his first run for office. Anyone concerned about the living conditions of blacks in Chicago would have taken Resco and his friends to task for what they did. None of that mattered to him. He got one position to leverage it into another position to leverage it into another position. To be honest it isn;t his fault if a bunch of stupid white men decided that he was just what they needed to control the direction of government. If he had any scruples he could have tried to tell them he wasn’t what they thought, but then again, if they were too stupid to see all this, after years in public service, then why should be bother them with inconsequential stuff like the truth?

They required that he be able to move the masses, he did. They required that he pull his fair share of manipulating the vote, and he did. I don’t know what else they want from him. He has plates on the market with his name on them, and he will have a day named after him, that is what he wanted. The rest is just what he has to go through to get it.

  124. There are few options in the current economic environment, and it would take a Bill Clinton or Hillary Clinton to come up with good and long term solutions. Obama is in for a rude awakening: dealing with the economy is not as easy as it looks.

  125. The blogger boiz remind me of the show on A&E, Intervention, except they haven’t had one for them yet.

They are making all kinds of excuses and rationalizations about Barry and it’s not fooling anyone except them.

  129. One one hand a lot of folks here voted for McCain (who might have made the Bush tax cuts permanent) and on the other hand I see people (possibly the same ones) complaining because Obama has decided not to roll back Bush tax cuts for the wealthy immediately. There is some inconsistency here.

By the way, even liberal economists agree that rolling back tax cuts is not necessarily the best thing to do in the face of a deep recession. See Paul Krugman’s blog for instance. PK was a strong and vocal supporter of Hillary candidacy too.
