My Voting Strategy: A Better Tomorrow

Most of mother’s family comes from Missouri. They call it the show-me state. It’s considered one of those bellweather states in elections because they tend to go with Presidential winners. I think I know why. Like a good Missouri denizen, I never take anything on blind faith. When I say, I have faith in something, it’s because I’ve tested and tested and tested it so that I have faith the thing will happen again. To me, faith is confidence. I think that is the legacy my mother taught me. This is also why I became a Buddhist. The Buddha’s teachings about faith are all about that kind of faith. Sogyal Rinpoche is a teacher in my tradition and explains this type of faith far better than me.

How do we arouse this faith? The only way is to begin by using our ordinary intelligence. Through the wisdom of studying, reflecting deeply, and meditating on the teachings, we examine them, just as, in the famous example, Buddha says we must examine gold:

O bhiksus and wise men,

Just as a goldsmith would test his gold

By burning, cutting, and rubbing it,

So you must examine my words and accept them,

But not merely out of reverence for me.

So in the Buddhadharma, faith is not blind faith, but one proven through reasoning and investigation.

I like to test things and examine things so that I can always be completely confident in them which is probably why most of my life I’ve had jobs doing research. This is also how I approach my voting strategy. Even when I had a certain amount of doubt in John Kerry, I still voted for him because I had faith–given our experience with President George W. Bush–that Senator Kerry could do no worse. I didn’t think he would be Harry Truman, but I knew he wouldn’t be George W. Bush. Afterall, we know a lot about Senator Kerry from his war record and his senate record.

This year, I have I had to put away habits of years and a lot of assumptions I’ve lived with for a long time. I always saw the choice issue as that one issue where I would draw my line in the sand. That one issue that told me the mettle of a candidate and if he truely wanted to leave me to my constitutional rights or inject his religion and worldviews into my life. I was, at one point, a Republican because I came from a Republican family. But, I voted Democrat more than Republican election-after-election. This is because I studied the modern Democratic Party and Republican Party. I voted Democratic because I believed they were the party that stood for fair play. I knew this because of the legacies of FDR, JFK, Truman, and Clinton.

I am a democrat because I’m basically a Crusader Rabbit. I’m all for the little guy. That is probably why I love Harry Truman. He was a President that fought all of his life for the little guy as a little guy. The powerful used to put him down even as President by calling him “that Habadasher”. Harry the Habadasher was the one that had to make the decision to end a long World War with the use of a weapon of unimaginable destructive power. Who would have know this farmer’s son would rise to a place where he had to make such a decision? Do you think any one could’ve have imagined that he would one day make that decision? When we vote for a president, do we ever know what kind of decision they will have to make?

I know that the only way to pass on all that I love about this country is to pass on a fighting spirit that sees a wrong and rights it. I like to think that I am quite cosmopolitan, but I believe I have that most enduring of American traits–a fighting spirit. I also would like to think that is why I can tell when rhetoric is authentic and when it is feigned. You see, I was a skinny little girl in Iowa that got a black eye taking on a bully named “Bubba” who picked on the little kids when no one else would. I know that Senator John McCain has seven houses but I do not think that has jaded his fighting spirit.

I want some one that will fight for a better tomorrow for my children and your children. I know that some times folks can say some pretty fancy things in a fairly genuine way so that is when you have to use the method that Buddha suggests. You must look at the metal of the person and see how it has been tested. You must see how that metal stood up to extraordinary circumstances, fortuitous circumstances, and negative circumstances. John McCain has been human and made mistakes. I also disagree with him on many things. But I do not question his life, his experience, his heart, his values and how those things have shaped his heart and his actions. Who knows what kind of decisions might face this next President?

John McCain fought the big tobacco companies. He did not vote for the Bush/Cheney Energy bill and stood up to the pork that would enrich the big energy companies. He stood up to Donald Rumsfeld and questioned him on the conduct of the Iraq War. As a victim of torture himself, McCain stood up to his own party and said that we should never torture others. He said that the Bush tax cuts were wrong and expedient. I don’t think that he will always do the things that I would like, but I do believe that he will try the best way he knows how to create a better tomorrow.

Can you imagine your spouse showing up with an infant from India with heart problems and announcing you have a new daughter? Can you imagine what it must take to let others go ahead of you to freedom when you have been tortured but you know that it is special treatment because of your father’s position and you refuse it? We can see how John McCain made these decisions. We also know that he made some bad ones–his involvement with the Keating 5 and the end of his first marriage. He’s not really hidden any of it from us. We have watched him learn and carry on. Even after that horrible Bush/Rove primary fight, he persevered and continued as one of those senators who could work with all sides.

When all the democratic candidates stood up in the debates earlier this year, I was prepared to give each and every one of them a chance. After about two of these debates, I chose Hillary. I knew that not only did she have the experience and the knowledge of the issues, but I knew because of the work that she did in the past that she was working for a better future for all of us. I could look back on the years of work she did, her education, her training, and her actions, and know, with confidence and nearly irreversable faith that she would continue that work. Her life has been very public. We know she has made some very tough decisions. We have also seen her learn and persevere and I’m sure she will continue to be an effective senator.

With both Hillary and with John, I see a life time of actions. I see a life time of decisions. I see a life time of experience and knowledge. I can check their records. I can find people who will talk about growing up with them, serving with them, and loving them. I know that when the tough decisions have to made, that neither of them would be sitting with a blank stare holding a copy of “My Pet Goat”. I have that confident faith in them. The faith that comes with testing the metal.

So I have examined the words, the actions, and the experience of Senator Barack Obama. While the speeches are well written and very well delivered, I see nothing in him to give me faith that he can bring a better tomorrow. I look back to his first campaigns and see that he ran unopposed because he had his opponents–including an important mentor–disqualified on technicalites. I look back to his senatorial campaign, only two years ago, and find that his opponent’s sealed divorce records mysteriously opened. Divorce records sealed to protect small children. I see some one whose home was bought with the help of a felon. I see some one who cannot produce his own legislative records and whose voting record is made up of few decisions and accomplishments not his own, but handed to him by some one else. I see speeches with borrowed words on teleprompters. I see off teleprompter moments with mistakes made that would flunk a freshman. I see bristly, offended looks when asked tough questions. I see reporters tossed off planes when newspapers endorse other candidates. I see long term associations with folks that I would chase off if they came near my children. I’ve seen misogyny and race-baiting. I’ve seen money go to organizations breaking laws and perpetuating fraud. When I look for the simplest public records, I find nothing. I see only carefully crafted stories.

I have also seen the Democratic party turn against its past values. I saw the RBC throw out one-man, one vote. I saw the DNC punish some states that moved election dates early and leave others alone. I saw the DNC allow misogyny and race-baiting run unchecked. I saw the DNC push a candidate with no experience and no record ahead of a field of much more qualified candidates. I saw cheating in caucuses go unpunished. I saw impeachment come off the table. I saw my party enable the passage of domestic spying. I saw a candidate and a party so avarous of power and desire to rule that it turned its back on everything that had made me a democrat.

Another lesson taught by the Buddha and by the Christ of Christians 500 years later is that nothing good ever starts with a bad seed. A better tomorrow does not begin with injustice done to others.

I have to say that I have faith that John McCain can handle the presidency. My voting strategy is to do what I always do. I support McCain because he is the person in this race that is best suited to be president. My strategy is that I have traded votes with SM77. She wants to vote cast her vote for a third party candidate but is in Florida, where her vote REALLY counts. I will vote for Cynthia Mckinney so that she will be able to do that through me. She will vote for John McCain for me and for all things PUMA and for a better tomorrow. So yes, I’m not voting based on my priority issues. I’m asking SM77 to vote for the person I have faith in to do the job between the choices that I have left.

John McCain in 2008. Hillary Clinton in 2012. (Hillary in 2012 will definitely bring a better tomorrow)

Update:  SM77 has come to support McCain without reservations and his released me from our pact.  She feels strongly that McCain will be a better candidate for the millions of immigrants that look to our country than will Obama.  As of this moment, I will be voting for McCain with no reservations.

  1. I’m reposting this offer from the end of the last thread and I hope someone takes me up on it:

I’m in NY and happy to vote Nader or McKinney if someone in a swing state wants to vote McCain for me. Just tell me your preferred choice and it is done. :)

  2. *starting the slow clap*

    That was awesome, madame!

  3. This is powerful, dakinikat. Simply powerful.

  4. Wow! Another one out of the park!

Show me, indeed. There is nothing to Obama but corruption, hatred and narcissism.

I’ve had enough of that with Bush. No more. I truly believe that John McCain and Sarah Palin will be a better choice than Barack Oba-Moi and Joe “Death and Destruction” Biden.

May it be so. PUMA POWER!!!

  5. Great post…

I often feel that I must be too jaded, too pragmatic, to sum it up, too scared or cautious to cast my vote for a candidate so unknown and untested.

Obama supporters must have faith to so totally believe in someone based on so little.

Win or lose; the election process of the past 20 months has shown that seemingly a majority of people will vote for a campaign vs a candidate.

The damage will have already been done, even if Obama proves to be a decent president.

I still have not given up hope that McCain can pull it out. I’m voting for the hero…

  6. Dakinikat, I enjoy everyone’s writings here, but I always especially enjoy yours.

Great post; and exactly right, IMHO.

  7. I love this series. Great post, Dakinikat. Crusader rabbits for McCain!

    Whatcha’ll wearin’ tomorrow?

    (I’m wearing orange)

  8. Awesome post Dakini Kat ! I feel as if John MCCain and Sarah Palin at least see and hear the invisible people that Hillary so strongly defended, and will consider their fate when they are making decisions regarding the future. Sarah palin has already proved that she will do that in her state. .
I know very deeply that bo plans on prices going up for gas and oil, and that paying more for certain groups of people is “patriotic” and that his idea of redistribution of our hard earned money is superior to what we peons might do with it . he won’t mind if some suffer for the ‘greater good” I think that more than anything scares me about him. That in his arrogance and narcissism he truly believes he KNOWS BETTER than the people what do about the future .
Goddess help us all , and let John and Sarah WIN !!!
Blessed Be and Namaste Dakini Kat

  9. dakinikat wonderful! I love your exposition of Buddha’s words on faith. Was he a smart guy with integrity or what?

  10. Thank you for your marvelous writing.

FYi – Just catching McCain in Bristol, VA. Heartening to see sign, illuminated from light behind stage, saying, “Hillary supporter for McCain”. PUMA presence!

  11. Ann: I’m in PA (Philadelphia) and I would like to vote for Nader.

  12. I’m going to wear blue jeans and my Hillary shirt that says this is for the little guy …

  13. Micki if you vote McCain for me, I’ll be happy to pull the Nader lever for you.

    Thanks :)

  14. )-: Micki you’re in PA?? Please help beat Obama the dirtbag please please

I’ll send you my life-sized Johnny Mac cutout, with Ralph Nader’s autograph!

  15. just an FYI and for possible future funding ;)
someone really should save many of these posts and make them into a BOOK for PUBLICATION , I think it wuold be a great chronicle and best
    seller !!!!

    THE CONFLUENCE CHRONICLES

the story of how PUMAS changed history etc etc

  16. Ann: OK, deal.

Catarina-yes, and I’m in Philadephia. BO needs 500K votes in Philadelphia to win PA. So, I was going to vote for Nader, but I’m willing to swap votes for even the dream of Hillary in 2012.

  17. go Micki!
I’ll even throw in 17 Hillary buttons and 4 slightly worn PUMA
    bracelets!

  18. Beautiful! Isn’t it amazing how elitists of all feathers clung to Obama? David Brooks mocking Palin’s “anti-intellectualism”, Obama mocking “A plumber – is what he fighting for” , the disdain of the working class and entire states of poor people – I finally get what the “elitism” label is all about. Excellent post, madamab!

  19. yes, micki!!! Go Ann!

  20. I agree with Micki. My goal is two-fold. I want Obama defeated and Hillary to win in 2012. I’m in NY so trading votes with Micki helps accomplish both our objectives…. Hillary 2012 :)

  21. oops! I mean dakinkat – sorry – great post, dakinkat!

  22. I agree with Micki. My goal is two-fold. I want Obama defeated and Hillary to win in 2012. I’m in NY so trading votes with Micki helps accomplish both our objectives…. Hillary 2012 :)

  23. love this post, dakinikat!

  24. I’m still going to wear my Nader t-shirt to the polls. Now, it makes me feel covert. :) And I’ll be voting for Nader in spirit. Maybe I’m even voting for Hillary, in spirit. That’s a nice thought.

  25. ty for all your kind words, I really struggled with this one and it’s a bit longer than I usually write … i was trying hard to make my point without putting you all to sleep!

  26. How amazing will it be for PUMA’s to hear McCain declared the winner on Wednesday?
    It can happen.

  27. dakini
I didn’t want it to end!

  28. I’m in NJ and voting for the two-woman ticket-Green Party.
    (Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente)
This time I’m voting my values instead of for the Democrat nominee. First time ever and it feels right.

If you feel strongly about women’s rights, universal healthcare, energy independence (not “clean” coal) there IS another choice in this election.

  29. You did a fantastic job Dakini Kat, and you expressed yourself so beautifully and your soul shines right through .
You see that is one thing about this election , no matter who wins , I know I voted for the person with integrity and honor, and I have not compromised my own integrity with my vote , and i can at least live with myself . That is very important to me . I love this country and I loved the democratic party and what it once stood for. I have to continue to support those principles , even if I find them elseewhere .

  30. Dakinikat,

I love you post. With each one that I read, I get more emotional. This morning I was going through my “junk” e-mail, and I came across this quote from John Qunicy Adams that really said it for me. Sychonicity?

Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.
    ~John Quincy Adams

Power to the Crusader Rabbits and Pumas!

  31. I thought McKinney was a nut job?????????/

  32. Yay PUMA voting buddy!!!!

What a powerful, eloquent post. Thank you!

  33. Is this being reported locally in PA, OH, IN, VA? My great-grandfather was a coal miner in Ohio (black lung settlement and the whole deal). Heck, in NYS coal produces 20% of our electricity!

Ohio Coal Association Says Obama Remarks Make It Clear: Obama Ticket Not Supportive of Coal

    From the /PRNewswire–USNewswire

Mike Carey, president of the Ohio Coal Association (OCA), today issued the following statement in response to just-released remarks from Senator Barack Obama about the nation’s coal industry.

“Regardless of the timing or method of the release of these remarks, the message from the Democratic candidate for President could not be clearer: the Obama-Biden ticket spells disaster for America’s coal industry and the tens of thousands of Americans who work in it.

“These undisputed, audio-taped remarks, which include comments from Senator Obama like ‘I haven’t been some coal booster’ and ‘if they want to build [coal plants], they can, but it will bankrupt them’ are extraordinarily misguided.

“It’s evident that this campaign has been pandering in states like Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana and Pennsylvania to attempt to generate votes from coal supporters, while keeping his true agenda hidden from the state’s voters.……..(more in story)

  34. McKinney is a nut job, Carol – don’t know why so many are saying they’ll vote for her. If the point here is to keep Obama out of the White House, and it is, why not just vote for McCain??? As d’kat says above in her eloquent post, McCain is a fundamentally decent man. His winning the election could well mean the salvation of the true Democratic party. I am begging all those who are writing in third party candidates to reconsider their strategy. Please!

  35. that’s a perfect quote BB!

  36. Ann: just saw a McCain speech and a Palin speech, they’re hitting that again and again

  37. Kat5 – I agree. I am in NY and I am sure my vote will make no difference, but there are only two actual choices in this election. No, McKinney/Clemente will not usher in a new era for the Green Party. They are both too nutty.

I say, follow your conscience, but if you can, take the nuclear option. Deny Obama TWO votes. Your country depends on you!

  38. My concern about the third party candidates is that voting for them may hurt McCain if the race is too close to call or ends up in litigation somehow.
Seems the bigger share of popular vote McCain has, the better.

Maybe someone can articulate this a bit better?

  39. Interesting article about Philadelphia:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/03/us/politics/03penn.html?em

While wealthier whites in Philadelphia, especially in Center City, overwhelmingly support Mr. Obama, some urban blue-collar Democrats — like their counterparts in western and northeastern Pennsylvania — never made the transition from Mrs. Clinton. In South Philadelphia, McCain signs have cropped up in the windows of the low brick houses and on the postage-stamp front yards.

“Hillary won some of those white wards by 10 to 1,” said Shanin Specter, son of Senator Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, and a lawyer who is steeped in local politics. “Obama is likely to significantly underperform Kerry and Gore in those white row-house wards.”

The state Republican Party has begun running advertisements highlighting Mr. Obama’s ties to the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., his former pastor, which could tap into concerns among white voters

  40. I’m in MA but I’d love to see Obama get his ass kicked here, even if Mac can’t take the state.

  41. BB: I used that John Quincy Adams quote in my Democracy post, about the 5th or 6th one down.

  42. catarina: that’s i have a voting buddy … Louisiana will go red with or without me … but Florida needs McCain voters

  43. DakiniKat – if you want to break the deal & vote for McCain – I’m ok with that now.

At first, I really saw voting for McCain as a protest vote – but I do want Comprehensive Immigration Reform passed and I admire him for standing together with Latinos on this.

So Dakini, I’m OK with your voting McCain – I’ll vote for him here in FL.

  44. WOOHOOO!

  45. catarina,

Most people who are voting third party are in states where their vote is not going to make a difference either way. However, I am taking the same position as madamab. I think in order to be true to my principles, I have to go all the way and be willing to vote directly against Obama–even though Obama will probably win MA by 15-20 points. I want Obama to lose, and I want a woman in the White House. Those are my goals. As someone here said last night, if those are my goals, then I shouldn’t leave the dirty work to others.

I’m taking the Nuclear Option, voting for Palin and her running mate.

  46. It is very important to convince any undecideds you know to vote for McCain in a swing state (PA,FL,OH,IN,MO) or even states expected to go to Obama like MI. Any state that isn’t solidly blue like NY or MA. In those places you can vote for whoever the heck you want.

  47. okay, sm, if you free me from our agreement that’s kewl!

  48. SM,

I’m so sorry SM. I completely forgot that I read it in your post! Oh well, it’s a great quote and worth repeating.

  49. If the Obamacrats try to pull something sleazy, and we know they’ve done it plenty of times, isn’t it better for McCain to have big popular vote totals?

It will be hard for the media to spin it if the numbers are on Mac’s side and the people vote overwhelmingly for him

We are up against Acorn shenanigans. Why take any chances?

  50. Swanspirit:
Great idea. RD should write a publication on how we PUMAS came to be, why we came to be and why this movement is important. I’ll buy it!

  51. I wish I could hang out here all day, but I have to get some work done. See you later, gators. Just one more day to go!

  52. catarina: I agree. I think that those who can’t vote for McCain in a solidly blue state have the option of leaving the top blank or voting 3rd candidate. However, I’d like to see everyone vote for McCain because it would be embarrassing if it came really close in a state like MA. Even if Obama wins, we want it to be as narrow as possible to show that he does NOT have a mandate and that half of the country still does not approve of him.

  53. I don’t even know what you all look like – but you all are some of the most wonderful people. I am so very proud to stand with you.

I think the Founding Fathers (and Mothers) would be PUMAs.

Tomorrow I vote R for the first time. I will vote for McCain/Palin. If a pollster asks why I’ll paraphrase Carville -”its the integrity stupid”‘.

  54. bb, SM

    and every HRC supporter
who makes the decision to vote for McCain.
What a great feeling it will be if he pulls it out.

    It ain’t over.

  55. yes, DV
not giving him a mandate, that’s what I was sputtering about upthread, thank you
    :-)

  56. excellent post dak. You wrote something that has been in my thoughts regarding the Dem Party since the South Carolina primary –

“…nothing good ever starts with a bad seed.”

I voted last week. For the first time ever I voted for a Republican candidate for President.

I walked back to my car to wait for my admin. assistant who was a first time voter so it took a little longer. I have known for many months I could never vote for the great pretender. I thought I had processed all my anger and emotions.

As I walked to my car I looked at my “Hillary” sticker in the back window of my car. You know – the one that is just her signature in blue on a clear field and goes on the inside of the glass. The sun was shining so I placed my hand on the sticker to feel the warmth, to reflect and to send Hillary some good vibes.

I became lost in thought as I stood there with my hand on her name. I came out of that moment when I felt the chill of the wind drying the tears on my cheeks. I realized that I was finally letting all of my emotions come down. I could not stop crying.

I am 64 years old. I have worked all of my life as a volunteer for the Democratic Party and (in my youth) as a paid staffer in various races. For many years I have provided housing to volunteers and staff members (and office space).

    My heart is broken.

“… nothing good every starts with a bad seed.”

  57. Good going Dee. I feel the words of your comment.

  58. dee, profound. Thanks.

  59. dakinikat: Wonderful post! I learn so much, from each posting, and the thoughts and feelings expressed, have helped to validate my own decision. This site keeps me from going crazy.

  60. “A better tomorrow does not begin with injustice done to others.”

This is as great a summation as I can think of!

Thanks for sharing that moment. I felt the same way, towards my 68 year old mother who fought as a single mother to care for her 4 kids..

Women deserve respect, and this was supposed to be Hillary’s, yours, and my mother’s time.

    obama stole it.

  62. Dee, I think it’s wonderful that we have this place to be together because it is obviously such a struggle for all of us to come to terms with this… I get strength from reading every one’s words here

  63. Dakini – By the power of PUMA, I release you from BONDAGE! (LOL!)

I needed a reason to vote McCain to get over my apprehension of voting for a Republican. But I’m really good with it now.

It took me a while to come around, I know, but after reading your post, it’s not fair for me to take your intent away just because I’m too much of a Democrat vote snob.

Thank you though for helping me come to that decision!

Gawd I love my PUMA familia.

  64. Dee …I feel your pain, and I dont care if I cry before during or after I vote , or who sees me …….

  65. ot, but Obama is playing with his face again.
Is he giving McCain the finger?

  66. Cate, I’ve never seen you here before and you’ve been promoting McKinney since the last thread. Are you just someone from the Green Party who wants to convert people here? Riverdaughter has made it clear several months ago when Green Party members started promoting McKinney on the site that most of the people here are Democrats. Most of us do not plan to ever join the Green Party. We are voting for McCain out of protest.

  67. dakinikat, what a satisfying post. The “My Voting Strategy” posts remind me of Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense.” And, yes, their publication would be powerful.

  68. (((Dee)))

Great post, dakinikat. Thank you so much.

  69. dakini’s post reads like a stump speech.
maybe she’ll be involved in the formation of a new party..

  70. purplefinn: i love thomas paine… i think that out here in the blogosphere that we are the direct descendents of those early pamphleteers … it’s pure grass roots democracy

  71. Dee – that was so beautiful. Thank you!

  72. Dakinkat amazing post- i’m posting it on my facebook page — I’m in IN

Dee– I’m tearing up reading your post very powerful – thank you

I’m a dem who is pulling the lever for McCain tomorrow

  73. Beautiful post, Dak. It brings up for me the contrast between a man who refused the path to safety when it would have hurt others, and a man who has much but won’t even share it with the unfortunate members of his family. I voted for the one with honour, as riverdaughter so eloquently termed it.

  74. I see all these posts like patches in a quilt. It’s like each of us have brought a piece of fabric that has been woven together to form the bigger work. The threads and the posts to these threads are very much part of an American quilt … it is a powerful thing when our patchworks become party of our bigger experience together — it is a very American thing

  75. Wonderful, dakinikat!

  80. Sarah’s on. She is in jeans and has a tiny little booty after 5 beautiful kiddies!

That alone qualifies her for the President of the US of A!

  81. sal and bill you are way late to the bird flipping party

  84. My voting strategy – Sisterhood

I’m a second wave feminist who has been reborn this year. All of the memories of the fight for full citizenship for women in all aspects of our lives have become fresh and new again. I have been astounded at how angry I still am. Where has that anger been hiding all of these years? Has it been seeping into other parts of my life without my realizing it? On the other hand, I have found sisterhood again. The intensity of my female friendships has increased tenfold as we have worked together for Hillary this year. We are energized and united once again. Whatever happens tomorrow, we will not ever allow ourselves to become complacent again. Go, Sarah! We’ve got your back from here on in! Hillary in 2012! Piper in 2048! (She’s a natural campaigner) We need to do it for that little girl dressed up as Sarah Palin in the video at myiq2xu’s place.

  85. THANK YOU DAKINIKAT!

  86. WATCH this Low-Life Candidate Flip off McCain, WATCH:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBMdWxcFXQg

But also remember he did this to Hillary during the Primaries, WATCH:

  87. Dee, I read your post and I got teary eyed. I know it may seem like everything was for naught. It may seem like there’s nothing left to fight for, but I swear: your tears will not have been shed in vain.
    Never stop fighting, ever.

  88. wdupray — Why shouldn’t he flip McCain off? He’s flipping the rest of us off too (including his supporters — FISA anyone?) I wonder if the msm will report it or just blow it off like they did when he did it to Hillary. HAHAHAHA

Carol — I have a sneaking suspicion that Sarah’s small butt after 5 children is why so many women have jumped on the “Palin is an idiot” bandwagon. They make me ashamed to be a woman.

  89. doesn’t she run in marathons? that would explain the physique after 5 children

  90. i’m speculating right now what flipping off another world leader might do to US diplomatic efforts …

  91. Hi everyone. I have an article on you guys that is on the Huffington Post. It covers a weekend with Harriet Christian and Democrats for McCain to Scranton. I thought some of you would be interested in reading this and commenting because Riverdaughter wrote a post about going to Scranton yesterday. Be sure to share it with your friends!
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/christal-phillips/clinton-democrats-the-med_b_140493.html

  92. today’s TIPP daily tracking poll:

    November 2 Mccain 44.6% Obama 46.7% Undecided 8.7%

  93. Remember that a PUMA vote for McCain counts double: one less for Obama and one more for McCain. This is not factored into the polls. We will decide this election!

  94. Dakini: I updated my Democracy one too. Thank you :)

  95. gary: same pattern as the primaries… obama can’t close

obama only has 40% of white women, McCain has 52% per new fox news poll on fox right now …

    there’s that puma vote!!!

mccain is still holding catholics also ….

hillary voters are still not convinced.

  96. As much as I dislike Teleprompter J, I’m sort of letting this one go. (no tomatoes thrown at me please, lol)

    Find this curious though:

    Yaflooze:

“BO is polling ahead, but McCain has a bigger chance than it first appears.”

  97. angie:

I think people notice these things but they are too afraid of the obamanation to say it out loud.
Even on the eve of the election, I still have told only one person of my intention to vote McPalin and downticket Dem with the 30% solution. My best friend, who knows me well enough to know that I have good reasons to do it. She also knows how set in my ways I get. And she knows enough about my political junkie esque to trust my judgement on the matter.
I have simply informed all of my other friends and family that I am “voting with the Democratic Party”. Which is true, really, because I am voting for almost all Democrats, and I consider McCain to be more of a Democrat than Obambi anyway.

  98. I’m in a Philly suburb. I will be wearing my Hillary shirt tomorrow. And I will be voting for Hillary. The fact that I have to pull the lever for McCain to do that, is just a minor technicality.

    Hillary 2012.

  99. Hmmm go to HuffPo? Umm… I’ll think about it.

PUMA people, give me strength. The Obots in my office are completely unable to shut the heck up about the election, all day long today. And they totally know one of us is a Rep and the other is a PUMA.

I must be dignified because Wednesday is bound to be a harder day, not matter what happens.

  100. dakinat:
great post. I think that if on November third, Hillary’s voters “aren’t convinced”, than my guess is that they will remain “unconvinced” on Nov fourth and vote for McPalin.

  101. gary, isn’t that the same number that was given for Sunday, the IDB/Tipp?

    It hasn’t moved?

  102. Christal – THANK YOU for reporting us as we are. You’re that Columbia student who took the bus ride to Scranton & it was reported in NPR right??

If so, THANK YOU. We need more honest truthtellers out there.

Please read our Voting Strategy posts on the top left corner, you’ll find different reasons there why we oppose Obama & the DNC.

We are a very diverse group of Clinton supporters from every part of the human spectrum.

We hope that you judge us fairly. THANK YOU

  103. Can you believe this classless, immature jack*ss, flipping off McCain?

I’m with dakinikat. How is this spoiled fratboy wannabe going to interact with world leaders?

    He is WORSE than Bush!

  104. mlhath, on November 3rd, 2008 at 1:35 pm

    well said! lol!

  105. Okay will if sm77 vouches for Christal’s HuffPo post, I will give it a read!

  106. I suspect that O will just give world leaders anything they want.

  107. Hi sm77,
I had no idea I was mentioned on NPR but my article has gotten a ton of attention this week. My blog which was started only a week ago got 2,000 hits in one day because of this article.
Yes, I attend Columbia Journalism School and you are very welcome. I think everyone should be allowed to tell their story and Clinton supporters haven’t been given that chance. I was also tired of hearing people call you guys bitter and r_acist. I knew there were other reasons why Democrats were voting for McCain or sitting out on an election after 8 years of Bush!

  108. actually Gail, Obama lost a point and McCain gained one. Undecideds remained the same it went from obama +4.5 to Obam +2.1

  109. Christal: I just finished reading it … it was good, solid, objective journalism. Your profs should be proud of you.

  110. undecideds will break for McCain or vote third party

    ***********

Your statement gave me chills – good ones. I’d say you have good instincts. I appreciated your article too.

  112. Crystal — that was a very good article — well written & fair reporting not commentating — I”m surprised they let you post it at huffpo. Of course, the comments have already started in the “bitter knitter’ “cutting off noses to spite their faces” vein (obviously reading comprehension isn’t too good at huffpo). I would comment my self because, like I said, it was a very good article, but I was banned from huffpo ages ago. Thanks for your work though.

  113. What I realized this election is that the idea of holding my nose, voting for the lesser of two evils, etc. was, except when I voted for Al Gore, the norm for me. I never voted enthusiastically for someone who truly represented ME. I woke up this year to a very bad pattern of behavior on my part. My right to choose begins in the voting booth! And this year, I am choosing to vote for the candidate who is not perfect by any means, but is more the kind of human being I want in office than the one my party picked.

  114. For those who are wondering, I am a registered Democrat who was an ardent Hillary supporter. I have been struggling with how to vote since the primary ended. I have been listening, reading, watching and doing as much research as I can. I understand why former HRC supporters are voting for McCain. I can’t. Therefore I am voting Green and just wanted others to know there is an alternative to McCain AND Obama. Sure my Green vote feels very small and weak, but I am trying to imagine how I will feel 6 months from now if either McCain or Obama are in charge. I guess I want to be able to say, “don’t blame me I voted Green.”

  115. perries — tell them there are new voting regulations — Republicans vote on Nov. 4 and Democrats vote on Nov. 5. :-)

  116. Thanks dakinkat, purplefinn, and angienc. I didn’t think that anyone would want to publish a story that basically calls out the media for what they did to Clinton in the primaries. I tried sending the article to newspapers but no one was interested. I have to thank a professor at Columbia who works for HuffPo. If it wasn’t for him I don’t think my story would’ve ever been published there.

  117. whoops, I’m a day behind sorry :)

  118. Cate — trust me — everyone here understands that they own their vote and that there is more then one alternative. You vote your conscience & we’ll each vote ours.

Barone, 34, travelled to 6 states for Clinton during the primary. The sexism, threats, and physical violence she says she experienced from Obama supporters is part of the reason why she feels strongly opposed to an Obama presidency. “I have been called a racist bitch and I have seen unimaginable things during the primaries and caucuses that have not been covered by the media.”
    ***

The statement above rings true with me as I have never seen such behavior, even by the Republicans. I have been through many elections but this one was the awaking of me as a woman after witnessing the treatment of Hillary Clinton and no one stood up to protest (high ranking party members) in fact they were pretending it wasn’t going on.

So, I cried and realized I may have been wasting my time for years in support of a party that would not support Hillary Clinton THE BEST CANDIDATE THAT JUST HAPPENED TO BE A WOMAN!

  120. Re: McKinney the nut job: Are we so sure this isn’t just a “meme” much like the one put out re: Hillary and Sarah? Why is McKinney at nut? Because she believes that people were taken in New Orleans and killed by the government. I suppose the first Jewish person to say Hitler was doing that must have seemed like a nut. I suppose the first Japanese person to say FDR would put them all in camps was a nut.

All I am saying is, McKinney may not be nuts, but she stands for liberal values that John McCain does not. Anybody who wants to vote for McCain, that’s great. He is a decent person, as far as I can tell. But why is a black woman the “crazy” all of a sudden. I find that as appalling as “Sarah is stupid,” which might also be for some people true. We just shouldn’t engage in it. Object to policies, don’t name call.

  121. Cate: i think that’s great! Your vote is the most personal and most responsible and sacred thing that you can do in a democracy. Every one should come to that decision as well-thought out as you. I congratulate you on voting your deeply held ethics!

  122. btw — all Conflucians — Christal’s article at huffpo is really good — it is worth giving huffpo the hit to read it — maybe if it gets enough hits they will print another article by her in the future — and based on the fairness of this one, that would be a good thing. So, yes, it is huffpo, but as afrocity would say, put some honey bbq sauce on it & it will go down just fine!

  123. Christal – THANK YOU! I wish you much success and if people are talking about the article it’s because it’s a fair assessment of who we are and WHY we are voting against the Democratic ticket this year.

I’m a lifelong Democrat, a Latin-American mother of a 10 year old girl and living in Florida. Our votes here have been used and abused since 2000 and I never expected my own party to disenfranchise us the way they did during the primaries and the Denver convention. One person = one vote but apparently One person in Florida is 1/2 a vote. Then, FL delegates at the convention did not cast our votes as we intended them. That is not Democracy. That’s voter fraud.

Once McCain wins come November 5th, we are going to bust loose and rebuild the Democratic Party. Get rid of the caucus system and only have closed primaries. Keep checking back with us here at the Confluence and with the great Heidi Li Feldman too.

Again, we all appreciate your honest and fair article.

  124. Kathy — I don’t know if McKinney being “nuts” is a meme or not, but I do know for a fact that she supports that crazy idea that the US Gov. blew up the canal after Katrina to flood the homes in the 9th ward (poor area of the city). I don’t particularly trust her, but if I lived in a for sure red or for sure blue state, I wouldn’t have a problem voting for her.

Indeed, thank you for daring to look and see why we WON’T FALL IN LINE. All the best and you give me hope that not everyone gave up critical examination and research.

  126. Come on folks, Puma up. I’m in Pa and I still think McPalin will persevere, despite the polls. Mac n Sarah are on the trail non-stop today. Right now, Mac is in SW Pa and wowing the base n others. Mozart’s Requiem ain’t playing yet and, if we continue to do the deed and vote McPalin and persuade others to do so, it will only play for bambi. Most of you have done far more than I have and maybe are feeling the tired, burn of exhaustion but don’t give up. Note to Sal…I may never be GOP but they now have respect and consideration from this 40 yr blindly Dem voter. Country before party. Go Pumas, Go McCain, Go Palin!!!! NOBAMA!!!

  127. Hello everyone. I am poised for tomorrow Can’t wait to vote for Mccain.

  128. Christal – Your article was wonderful. Thank you for writing about us PUMAs without treating us like lunatics. We appreciate it!

  129. Thanks. I am also a regular reader of this blog and have commented but use a pseudonym. I have to go out to do some election reporting but I will talk to all of you again soon. Good luck!

  130. Angie!

    Como estas, querida?

  131. More polling evidence of McPalin’s strength: it ain’t over folks!

    Link

  132. thx again Christal!! Best wishes with your Career!

  133. Remember to vote early to avoid the riots. Weird stuff is going to happen tomorrow, and it’s better to have already made it to the polls.

  134. Okay, Christal might get mad at me, but for all those who simply cannot stomach going over to HuffPo, Christal has her own blog and her article is posted here.
    http://christalphillips.wordpress.com/2008/10/23/clinton-democrats-the-media-has-got-it-all-wrong/
That’s where I first read it, and it deserves a look even from the HuffPo averse.

  135. Battlecat – I have Abuela and PUMA cub up and ready by 6:45am – then head to the polls, then after that – drop off PUMA cub at school.

If I go after 8am, it’ll be a looooooong line & Abuela PUMA won’t be able to withstand that.

  136. Battlecat – I am a little nervous about going to my polling place in Yonkers. I hope it’s going to be okay. My hubby will be with me, though…

  137. Question, why is it that when I got to different news blogs, The Obots all make the same comments word for word as they do on other blogs? Just wondering.

  138. myiq — ça va, mon amour.

  139. thx Cinie … wish I’d have gotten that before i gave the hit to huffpoop

  140. afrocity — because the Obots get their daily “talking points” email from the campaign, and they cut & paste the comments on different blogs — this is a good strategy as none of them are capable of thinking for themselves.

  141. wow, go check the rasmussen/fox polls … Mccain is really surging

  142. Thank you for invoking Truman so much, Dak – he is one of my heroes.

And, in case you folks haven’t heard, The Denver Group has been able to put its Obama-Nixon ad on the air one more time in Miami and one more time in Michigan for tomorrow morning. If we can raise another $400 bucks by 3 pm eastern we can run the ad again in Miami. For more on this see: http://tdg.typepad.com/democrats_for_principle_b/2008/11/november-3-midday-update-what-we-can-still-do-and-a-repeat-reminder-of-our-mission.html

  143. Some news about Obama’s position on Prop 8. Might be some folks interested in this.

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1108/15183.html

  144. Thanks Angie. I thought it was weird. Today they were all pasting the link to some Rolling Stone article.

  145. Also, thanks in some large measure to this crowd I have turned from sadness to resolve. If you are iinterested in what that means, see http://tdg.typepad.com/heidi_lis_potpourri/2008/11/resolved.html

  146. afrocity — let me guess, the article with BO on the cover with a friggin’ halo behind his head {rolls eyes} I swear, if nothing else, I want BO to go down just so the Obots’ head can explode. When I’m less-revengeful, I want Obama to go down so that so-called “Dems” can stop acting like neo-cons.

  147. Heidi Li – right with you.

  148. “I like to think that I am quite cosmopolitan, but I believe I have that most enduring of American traits–a fighting spirit.”

    Favorite Part.

  149. That would be the one Angie. Of course Obama’s coal bankruptcy debacle is absent in their posts.

  150. Sal – Sounds like Senator Present is living up to his usual do-nothing standards.

  151. I was with some folks yesterday who think that Democratic NJ may be turning “purple” and so we need to get as many McCain votes as we can here in NJ- I agree with Madamab – we need to let them know that they pushed us once too many times.

  152. Dakinikat — what a wonderful piece of writing.
This whole series has been wonderful.

now, back to read the thread!

  153. Hey folks. Off topic, but are any PUMAs in the triangle (NC for all out of towners) going to get together to watch the returns? Might be fun to celebrate or commiserate.

  154. How about Los Angeles PUMAS?

  155. McCain is on Tv, they are waving yellow signs behind him. Red and yellow make orange (PUMA). Thomas Jefferson is the light (yellow).

“ We hold these truths to be sacred & undeniable; that all men are created equal & independent, that from that equal creation they derive rights inherent & inalienable, among which are the preservation of life, & liberty, & the pursuit of happiness; that to secure these ends, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles & organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.”

Please go to puma.pac, Murphy wrote about ‘Prairie Fire’ Yers book, which exposes a systematic effort to use people as tools to reach a political objective. For anyone interested in how politics affects the people, it is essential reading.
Murphy also speaks with conviction about the fight of Puma, how we have turned our backs on our party to go undercover, at this time, when in all reality we should be rejoicing as we claim our success.

  156. Joanelle – I would not be surprised if NJ did turn purple. I have a lot of friends there, and they are Democrats, but they do not like Obama.

  157. (Delurking)

Micki at 12:18 and some others….

RE: wearing political t-shirts to polling locations when you vote.

Please check your local election laws. In many instances wearing political hats, t-shirts etc. is considered electioneering and the individual can be told to leave the property immediately. For instance in Illinois, all political materials supporting candidates must stay 100 FT away from the entrance to the polling place).

Seems like I heard at Noquarter or Gretawire that it was suggested that PUMAS wear ORANGE to the polls tomorrow.

    (back to reading…)

    GO PUMA!!!!

    Plan B!

    GOTV!

  158. Sorry, Ayers book.

  159. Why has the Democratic Party been taken over by ex-Republicans Moulitsas and Huffington. They were ineffective transforming their own Republican Party so they had to change their “adopted” Democratic Party to make it more Republican. What a sham this election has been. Republican vs. Republican with fascist tendencies. I will be voting McCain. I know he is a Republican, but he is preferable to Republican with fascist tendencies.

  160. I’m going to purchase an orange shirt today so that I can wear it in honor of my fellow PUMA’s. Regardless of what happens tomorrow, I will forever thank my Lord and maker for leading me to this site where I found sanity amist the chaos of this election.

I am thankful in all of our steadfastness to Just Say No Deal and Party Unity My Arse. I will vote tomorrow for McCain but I will do so with a heavy heart and I’ll remember what could have been.

  161. NPR on the car had callers talking about pollsters. One woman in FL called and said she felt hounded by teh Obama campaign — kept calling her cellphoen and even showed up at her door to ask if she voted yet. And she said she voted early (last week) and she was 3 hours in line — but at least she’d brought her knitting.
    LOL. I bet she’s a Puma!

  162. how did they come up with orange?

  163. Jeff–do you have any ideas for where we might watch them? I live in Chapel Hill and I had planned on drawing the blinds and locking all the doors :) I don’t know if I want to be anywhere in public regardless of the outcome, but I’m open to suggestions.

  164. FLVoter – What do you mean, “ex-Republicans?”

    ;-)

  165. Bonita, your words register with me powerfully.

  166. madamab,

You’re right, not really ex-Republicans. I stand corrected. Things like this make me say WTF!

  167. Gary- I hadn’t really thought about where, just wondered if the movement was gathering. I do understand the bunker mentality tho. I’m in Raleigh but willing to brave the possible gauntlet. ;-)

  169. I have posted Dak’s piece on Real Clear Politics (I had the opportunity to post two other in the series there and they each have 45 and 50 votes respectively. Please go vote – 10 votes are needed to keep the piece on the roll at RCP through tomorrow, and the article already has 2 (mine and one other) – Go to http://readerarticles.realclearpolitics.com/?period=all

Find on page My Voting Strategy: A Better Tomorrow, and vote.

  170. Another question: If you are voting tomorrow, what will you bring with you in case the line is long?

(Me, probably a book. Should it be “The Case Against Obama”?)

  171. Jeff /Gary – I would be glad to join up. I am in Durham but every establishment here is Obamaworld.

    _________

It may have to do with the Ukranian Orange Revolution.

The Orange Revolution (Ukrainian: Помаранчева революція, Pomarancheva revolyutsiya) was a series of protests and political events that took place in Ukraine from late November 2004 to January 2005, in the immediate aftermath of the run-off vote of the 2004 Ukrainian presidential election which was compromised by massive corruption, voter intimidation and direct electoral fraud. Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, was the focal point of the movement with thousands of protesters demonstrating daily.

  173. voted!

  174. Dee/Gary, I’m trying to think of somewhere convenient to all Triangle PUMAs. I work in RTP but cannot think of a place open late.

  175. New Post

  176. PUMA orange? They call yellow kitty cats orange, maybe that’s where it came from. I have on orange today. I want to get an orange sweat shirt and put my Hillary avatar on it.

Thank you for all you’ve done Heidi Li, and Crystal-great article. I’m sending it to the Obama guy who never heard about the RBC stuff and all that.

I’m keeping fingers crossed. PUMAS RULE!!

  177. Cate says:
I’m in NJ and voting for the two-woman ticket-Green Party.
    (Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente)
This time I’m voting my values instead of for the Democrat nominee. First time ever and it feels right.

If you feel strongly about women’s rights, universal healthcare, energy independence (not “clean” coal) there IS another choice in this election.
    ————————————————————–
Good for you! I am too, for the same reasons! And smearing Cynthia McKinney and the folks voting for her is doing the same thing we’ve all been angered at the Obots doing. Give the same respect to we PUMAs that will vote for the real liberal candidate- McKinney and loathe Obama the same as you McCain voters do. We haven’t been running down your thought out choice so don’t run down ours. McKinney is not “crazy” that’s a smear that started on the right wing in the 90’s- the same time they started smearing the Clintons, and then used by Obots this election season, just like they smeared Hillary. If you call the smears on Hillary, Sarah and Cindy sexist you can’t decide it’s okay to smear Cynthia. Cynthia McKinney really does have a liberal voting record and the same crew in the Democratic leadership that stole the election from Hillary, played the same game against McKinney because they don’t like liberal politicians that actually vote liberal, like Cynthia and Hillary.

I have blogged on my outraged at the outright misogyny directed not just at Hillary but Sarah too (as well as Cynthia- Obots call her the c word too)

I’m in KY in the Louisville metro area (state will quite likely go McCain, my city maybe Obama- it’s a college town- numerous ones, and 12% of the population is African American- I’m hoping some of the middle aged African American women like my coworkers, will vote McKinney instead- they were Hillary voters in the primary, Obama’s misogyny hacked them off.

I’ve seen McCain yard signs all over, but more Obama bumper stickers than McCain. I’ve only seen Obama yard signs in dominantly upper middle class African American neighborhoods.

Highlight of my week was when I was driving to work and saw a pickup truck (looked several years old and not a yuppiemobile but one that actually was being used in the intended way- with a Hillary bumper sticker still proudly displayed. I gave the couple in the truck a thumbs up sign (with a big grin on my face) as I passed them- they were turning into a mobile home park- likely where they lived. The area I live in is made up of mixed racially poor and lower middle class people.

I’m designing a bumper sticker for my car that goes on Wednesday no matter who wins (but especially if Obama does) that will say “Don’t blame me, I voted for Hillary and Cynthia”

  178. Dems 364; GOP 174. Needed to Win: 270.
    http://www.intrade.com/
    I don’t get it?
This site has Obama winning? How do they know, if everyone hasn’t voted? Doesn’t make sense.

  179. I’ve only posted here once before – for the first Puma rollcall. I try to read the posts daily and I want to say thank you to all for the powerful words. I never fail to read something that says what I’m feeling. I’ve felt like a political refugee since January after voting straight democrat since I started voting – I’m 57. I sent in my ballot last week and it wasen’t painful at all to vote for McPalin. The sexism this year has really bothered me. I didn’t realise how much untill the night after I watched Sarah Palin’s speech at the republican convention. I had a dream, where at the end I was celebrating the New Year with one of my grandsons and SP and we were outside, looking up at the stars and saying over and over again “It’s so beautiful!”, while our arms were linked and we were twirling around in a circle. I needed to see a powerful woman being honored and celebrated. Anyway, I’m so grateful that I have my refugee camps, here and Heidi Li’s and a precious few others.

  180. Yes, Madamab – the gals I was with yesterday balanced the O people I had to sit with Thursday at that dinner – I’m feeling better now – and do see some real shifts. But you know those younger (under 35) seem to be frightened by all that the Os have said about McCain.
We just all have to VOTE tomorrow

  181. Thank you for the link Cinie, Huffpo is not my cuppa tea anymore. I enjoyed the article and commented.

Thanks to Christal! madamab, I will send lots of good energy, vibes and prayers…all that cushy warm airy fairy love stuff to keep you safe at the polls. Thanks for voting!

May Pumas will vote for the Green Party, write Hillary in, go topless or vote McCain. Puma is a fight for democracy, our right to decide and have our voices heard. It is also about saying no to descrimination, media lies / peddling and political strong arming.
    Go Puma !

  184. oops, many pumas

  185. Though I didn’t know it when this political mess started, just few days ago I realized what my voting strategy was: to stick up for the democratic ideals on which our republic was founded, and on Friday voted for the John McCain and Sara Palin ticket.

All suggesting to me that, indeed, not shying away from voting for “Honor” during this “Time for Change” (or to “Just say not to Derangement”) will help soothe what has been such “A Long and Winding Road” for so many of us who’s dream is to have a stab at what “A Better Tomorrow” ought to mean.

    Go PUMAs!

  186. I thought the orange was because of Senator Clinton’s choice of that color for the suit she wore at the Dem Nation’l convention.

In haste now, but wanted to tell you that The Denver Group has been able to make that second Miami buy!

  187. I figured out the unifying idea in all the recent Obama revelations. It has a lot to do with NBC/GE

Orange ribbons were worn in 2000 for Florida. Pumas in Denver had orange balloons And after Hillary wore it in Denver , McCain had orange toes – both days at the GOP convention!
GOP-er at my comments said he’ll wear orange when voting in honor of PUMA! I was really touched!

  189. I meant orange ties not toes

  190. Just a quick link about McKinney: (and only quick because I don’t have time to find the halfhearted non apology she made for the assault)

  191. I should add, I am certainly not an OBot. She assaulted a Capitol police officer, whose job it is to protect her, accused him of racial profiling, and never even apologized to him. Now that alone doesn’t disqualify anyone from office, nor does it negate any good a person does, but it does give insight to character.

  192. McKinney’s incident with that Capitol police officer is the thing that turns me off more than anything. (That and her support for reparations.) Her behavior was inexcusable and her race-baiting afterwards appalling.

  193. Does anyone want to trade a vote with me? I’m in a solid blue state.

  194. I am fiscally conservative and socially libertarian, and have typically voted Republican, though sometimes Democrat. Since I am not a PUMA, maybe I don’t really belong here.

However, I just wanted to tell all of you how much I admire your integrity. I also admire your ability to collaborate and cooperate harmoniously toward achieving your goal. And I’ve enjoyed reading these posts.

  195. Never mind; I’m feeling moved by the “no mandate” issue.

  196. taffy,

As long as you’re not an Obot you belong here! Thanks for the kind words :)

  197. Obama doesn’t come out against Prop 8 b/c he isn’t really against it. He is clandestinely promoting it, but the Politico article doesn’t even mention Kmiec and Obama’s Family Faith and Values Tour.

  198. Thanks, Dancing Oppossum. No Obot here. I would offer to help you all and trade my vote, but I live in Missouri and the polling is so close that I think my vote is needed here.

  199. taffy: I actually consider myself in that category too … the social issues usually win out for me which is why i vote dem

  200. edgeoforever, thank you for the inadvertent humor– I am still laughing at the mental picture of McCain with orange toes!! How I wish I’d read this post before my friends (early) voted O. I can only shake my head, as one of them took part in a TX caucus, and saw the problems there firsthand. On my 77th birthday I mailed my ballot, my 15th presidential vote. I wanted to vote for a woman this year, and dammit, I did! I wrote Hillary’s name in, which gave me three choices but as I believe in the secret ballot I won’t reveal which got the tick. Thanks for the community here.

  201. I do consider what happened with McKinney and the capitol police officer an example of real racism. It was obviously sexist as well. Male members of Congress walk in without that pin all the time and never get even questioned, much less roughly grabbed by the arm like McKinney was.

McKinney was involved in the Civil Rights movement as a child- marched in the protests, etc… Civil Rights activists feared police brutality- and justly so- we all know what happened to those peaceful marchers on a number of occasions. She carries residuals of that fear in her psyche, when she was singled out and grabbed by the arm her reaction came out of that childhood fear.

Honestly, I can’t say I wouldn’t have reacted if that happened to me, if a man grabbed my arm. Women know they live in a culture where hatred and violence toward them is not just seen as “normal” but eroticized. If a man grabbed my arm my fight or flight instinct would kick in. That’s what happened with McKinney, so yeah I can see why if you look at the situation from not just the MSM position, but hers too, you understand the reaction and why she didn’t feel deeply apologetic. She had been treated with an obvious unfairness and what felt like a threat of physical violence.

  204. Ok—Thanks for the good idea, Ann-
Here’s a guy in NYC who will be glad to trade a vote—-
I will vote for any independent candidate if someone in a
swing state will vote for McCain-
Let me know—I want Hillary in 2012…McCain has to
    win for that to happen.

  205. Come on PUMAS – now is the time we can actually make a progressive statement by voting for the real Progressives – the Green Party ticket (McKinney-Clemente) – let’s do it!
