This is breaking news and very disturbing.
A 20 year old volunteer for the McCain-Palin campaign was mugged after using an ATM. The mugger took $60 from the volunteer who was from Texas and had gone to PA to help with phone banks. After the mugging, the man that robbed this young woman noticed a McCain bumper sticker on her car. He then marked her with a B on her face, yelled obscenities and anti-McCain rhetoric at her, and assaulted her.
Here at the Confluence, River Daughter and many other writers have been warning of the violence the Obama campaign and its supporters have basically advocated by not decrying violent images of Hillary, Sarah, and their women supporters. This is vile and is exactly what misogyny produces.
I hope that this young woman recovers and that Senator Obama will take time out from his campaign to finally call the dogs off women for simply voicing their support for some one other than him. I also hope that the press finally stops reporting on ‘fake’ threats towards Obama when there are real women whose lives are put on the line by the sexism Obama supporters have incited, encouraged, and displayed. The media should also admit its culpability in this attack.

Regency, there are two things that will immediately be said by Obots until actual confirmation by third party that this happened (i.e., the police who took her statement and saw her immediately after the attack): Looking at her face, you can tell that the attacker didn’t break her skin that badly. If he really wanted to cut her badly, he could have and the wounds would be much worse and not healed. They will also say that the typical mugger doesn’t stop to make a political statement, and if he does, he doesn’t take care not to deeply break her skin thereby avoiding a scar. Just get ready for it–if the MSM (besides FOX), picks this up at all, its going to be hell for her. She should have accepted medical treatment. They’re going to go after her for that, too.
Pat J — Two things to consider: (1) I take comfort from the fact that instead of a 40% hang up rate there is an 80% hang up rate for the polling — I take that to mean that people don’t want to discuss who they are voting for — the only people who don’t want to discuss who they are voting for are McCain voters (as we know BO supporters can’t stop talking about who they are voting for). (2) I also take comfort from the fact that television news ratings are way down. BO supporters actually claim that is because “the race is over — everyone is voting for BO” but when you also consider that conservative radio ratings are up, I think it means people are sick of Obama propaganda 24/7. These two things make me truly believe that there is a silent majority out there who are not buying the media narrative and not voting for BO.

Pat-that B bugs me, too, and her refusal of treatment. The doctors can tell a lot from cuts. I had to review medical testimony in a stabbing murder case, and the wounds tell the doctors a hell of a lot. They can tell if it was self-inflicted, if there was hesitation, etc. All that info is necessary to investigate the battery.

I certainly agree to the extent that we need more details. If her story is true, it should be pretty clearly consistent with the facts (e.g. the fact that the B is backwards when her face is right side up). If she’s making it up, I’d expect to find things that are inconsistent, not to mention incidents in the past of her making things up.
If everything fits, though, and she appears to be just an honest person, it’s going to be hard to explain this away.

The “refusal” of medical treatment could have simply been her saying no to “Do you need an ambulance?”
You can’t tell if an injury like that is self-inflicted just by looking at it. “Hesitation cuts” are usually a sign of a suicide attempt where the initial cut doesn’t go deep enough.
All that I am saying is that the B is perfectly formed. Was she in a struggle? I am assuming that which may be where I am off track. But we have had so much bullshit aimed at us lately that this story just needs total confirmation. The B is perfectly formed on the surface of a face which under even the best of circumstances is difficult to apply. Think of us who wear lipstick or eyeliner. It takes time and patience.

The most awful part of this latest incident is that it could well be true. I cannot remember another presidential campaign in my lifetime with this sort of divisive ugliness, carried to an extreme of either perpetrated or implied violence.
I voted early this afternoon here in Central TX at the local library. The line was quite long and contained a number of university students, the majority of whom were almost certainly voting Obama. The weather was beautiful, the road leading to the library was jammed with signs advocating for local candidates – mayor, county commissioner, city council; everyone was very patient, polite, and quiet. With my husband serving as place holder, I wandered into the library to peruse the stacks – a lifelong, favorite activity. What an ideal scene.
My husband and I ended up casting our votes for McCain/Palin, a major, surprising departure for both of us, but entirely within the norm for participants in a democratic system. There is absolutely no place for intimidation or violence when it comes to difference of opinion among Americans. There is no condemnation too strong when it occurs. Others have suffered and died so we might have fair, free, and open elections. Where all the media and political voices which should be stating this loudly and clearly?
Excuse me, but how easy would it be to carve a perfect “b” in your own cheek? And why would it be backwards if you did?
I can’t decide which is more nauseating. The fact that this happened, or that there are people questioning whether her story is authentic and how could such a perfect “B” be made during a struggle. Who said there was a struggle? Who said she could? myiq–the story says “carved.” You said “marked.” There is a big difference. Carved implies knives and knives imply cuts. And you don’t only hesitate when you are trying to commit suicide. People who are not violent, who are “new” at using knives, also make hesitation cuts. They also become bolder as they go, and the cuts become deeper.
I don’t think its a hoax. I just don’t understand it. I think angienc makes the most sense, and if she is right, then this was a premedidated act of violence against a young woman that was politically motivated. If so, I have no words.

I know several people who have suffered acts of vandalism, threats, and assault during this election. If this woman is one of them, it would not surprise me.
Leaders lead, by their words or by their silence they affect the actions of others. You have to have the wisdom to realize that what you say perhaps innocently could be misinterpreted by the fringe lunatics who hang on your every word. “Get in their face” has been taken literally by many Obama supporters.
The story has already been authenticated enough for Sarah Palin to have called this woman, the McCain campaign has issued a statement, and the Obama campaign has issued a statement. There are cameras at ATM’s. I don’t think anyone would be stupid enough to concoct a story about something happening at an ATM that didn’t happen. It’s far too likely that it would all be caught on tape.
This is the atmosphere that politics has left behind. We should have known when two family members got into a knife fight over Hillary and BO months ago that this couldn’t end well.

SM77–I was mugged, too, at knife point and I fought like hell. My friend’s face was cut. We went to the hospital. I had a black eye and hematoma that hurt for months. I was also battered by a teenager who ran up to me for no reason and punched me on the face.
I’m not saying that it didn’t happen. Its just weird and weird means that it won’t get the attention it deserves, or it will be brushed aside as a political stunt.

Are you kidding. How do you know what way the guy was facing when he drew the B? Obviously he was facing down above her head toward her feet. This is not a fake.
I never said she was not attacked. Her bruises confirm that. Maybe I watch too much CSI type shows but she was not carved, it looks like it was made with a magic marker. I am not denigrating what she may have gone through, it is obvious something occurred. And the facts are not all out there.
Just using caution since they just got around to correcting the “kill him” comments supposedly said at a Palin event which got the other side up in arms.

This girl posted the picture herself today. The attack happened last night.
The police would be able to tell if the black eye was fresh or not (I’ve had more than one, they take a while to turn dark) and if the scratches were scabbed over or not.
Somebody blackened her eye, and not many people would do that to themselves. Did she ask someone else to hit her?
If she made it up and the cops were suspicious of her story because of the way the “B” is scratched I wouldn’t expect her to post the picture anyway.
There would be a ATM record of her withdrawl to confirm she used the machine, and there may have been other signs of s struggle, like dirt on her clothes.
How many 20 year-old women would scratch their own face in a way that might leave permanent scars?

I live near Scranton Pa. During the primary here there were accusations of racism against those of us not supporting Obama including from Obama himself. There was a story in the WAPO about racist signs along the highway and lately we were the sight of another bullshit claim of someone shouting “kill him”. Those things never happened. Ask the local police and anyone in attendence at the Obama rally.
What did happen was that Hillary volunteers were spit on, called bitches and c**ts and bitter old dried up whores just for standing on the corner with Hillary signs.

A couple of things here, purely speculative. This young woman appears to have a lovely complexion. How likely would she would be to take a chance on marring it by incising a large mark on it? Also, she’s a volunteer from TX who traveled all the way to PA to work for McCain. Does this sound like an unstable personality (well, to anyone other than a fanatic Obot)? And how likely is to that she would hit herself in the face hard enough to cause a black eye, especially with the knowledge that she could harm her vision? Self-infliction isn’t beyond the realm of possibility, it just doesn’t seem likely.

While I was in college in NYC, I was walking home from my PT job to the bus I took on 149th & 3rd avenue in the Bronx very late in the night.
I bought tokens for the week and heading up the stairs I see a guy walking towards me. He punches me and grabs my hair and wrestled me to the ground and dragged me away from the subway stairs next to a closed up shop door. He said that if I didn’t want to get raped, I had to shut up and give him all my money. He had a gun or what felt like one pressed to me – So I lay still and pulled out all my cash from my purse (which was 20 dollars and a bag of NYC subway tokens.
This happened in less than a minute and it felt like forever. He bolted as soon as I gave him the cash & then I got up and ran to a deli/bodega down the block to call the police.
When you get punched, it feels like your entire face is going to explode off your skull. He certainly could’ve carved her face while threatening to kill her and her comply so she can survive the ordeal.
OT – I just watched McCain’s rally in Sarasota. It was his 7th stop today. He was almost hoarse.
It was undoubtedly his best speech ever!
I am proud and positive that he will be a great President!

They say they have tried to contact the police and campaign with no success. I find that very hard to believe that they couldn’t get a hold of anyone. Now they will never report the response and people will be left with the impression that she did it to herself.
Obama is on the campaign trail saying how can McCain call Obama a socialist when McCain was also against the Bush tax cuts. Well, I have pondering this on my way home from work. We all want to believe that an Obot did this, or a person who, for whatever reason, believed this was a way to make a statement. We all do NOT want to believe that this could be an equally zealous McCain supporter. I have no idea what happened. The idea of it is appalling. But if it is a stunt, then it undermines all of the actual abuse that Obots perpetrate “getting in people’s faces”.
As far as taking an ambulance is concerned–when I was mugged, the police took us there, after we drove around several city blocks for about fifteen minutes looking for the guy. The police officer wanted us to go back to the police station and file a police report and look at mug shots. My friend was going into shock (well, she kept asking me what happened and could not remember, so I assume it was shock) and I finally yelled at the police officer to take us to Pennsylvania Hospital. So, it was hospital first, police report second. They took our statements at the hospital. So, she did not need to take an ambulance, and, where she was in Pgh is about 5 minutes away from UPMC, where the police officer could easily have driven her. Whether or not she was insured for ER treatment is another matter.

This is not a black eye from someone being punched in the eye, this is a black eye of a head injury. When I had my head trauma, I was not expecting to wake up with my one eye looking like this and the other one starting to blacken. I was so shook up over it, that I went back to the emergency room. The drs. said something about the eye socket collect pockets of blood or some such bizarre thing. I’m not a dr. and I had a concussion so it’s fuzzy, but I remember the swelling actually “traveled” down the entire side of my face and it took several weeks before the bruising (even though I wasn’t hit in the face at all) to go away.

Angie — Di may not have been perfect, but she was sincere in her compassion for the “invisible” – and she was beautiful and beloved. I think it’s a fair comparison in that context.
Women who carry there babies around usually do not wear their best outfits for obvious reasons. Beside, I don’t think Sarah gives two hoots about fashion. If they had not put her into a more upscale wardrobe they would have made fun of her anyway. Not as much spent on the Greek columns though and not much criticism coming out of that.

The doctor noted that I went into deep shock – after realizing what they had in mind – I was almost comatose. This poor young girl was alone totally. Who knows what went through her mind.

I see it as suppression of speech plain & simple — I don’t trust the government to tap phone lines without a warrant & I certainly don’t trust them to determine what is “fair” or not in speech — it may be ok in theory, but in practice it too easily lends itself to abuse. I know how to turn the channel if I don’t like what is being said (ex — I haven’t watched CNN since March)

Do you remember when the fairness doctrine was in effect? I thought it actually worked pretty well. Radio and TV stations are supposed to represent the public interest. The airwaves are owned by the people. I think it would be kind of nice if radio stations had to go back to having some liberal talk hosts.

folks, the fairness doctrine will be used to shut down ALL opposition, not just conservative voices. As PUMAs, it must be remembered that YOU are part of the opposition now. Everyone who values free speech in all forms HAVE to come together to stop this. Pelosi and Reid have already stated that internet blogs, website, etc would be included.
The only “left wing” channels that are carried in my area consist of Ed Schultz (hideous), Tom Hartman (seems to have lost any objectivity) Rachel Maddow (a huge disappointment) and some guy out in the boondocks of the Berkshires. All Obamabots. If you attempt to call in be prepared to get shouted down as they brook no deviation from Obama all the time.

California has some of the most conservative GOPers in the country. Their GOP congressional delegation is very, very conservative. Unfortunately, there are just enough uber-cons to prevent a lot of good from happening in CA, esp since they have so much money.
myiq: Because the owners were no longer restricted on what they could own. At one time you were only allowed to own one tv station, one radio station and one newspaper and I think even that was restricted to owning only two out of the three.
When the doctrine was overruled this is when they had the opportunity to buy up all these single stations and banded them together under the name of Clear Channel and a few others. Many of these radio stations went blank in that they merely played music all day long with no talk interrupting.
Out here it is more right wing talk than anything else. But the left had some really bad performers who failed to build an audience.
