Who we are is who we were

Please watch this scene from Steven Spielberg’s “Amistad” – especially from point 7:25 on forward:

In this scene where John Quincy Adams defended Cinque the Mende leader (brilliantly potrayed by Anthony Hopkins and Djimon Honsou), he reminds the Supreme Court that who we are as a people is who we were, and that Cinque was a man who is fighting for his right to exist as a free person just like our Founding Fathers (and Mothers!) fought for their right to exist as a free nation. 

This rings true today with regards to our situation as PUMAs.  Who we are today is who we were.  Forged from a principle of equality and Democracy, we are a nation of fighters, people that believed in the common good that everyone should have the right to cast a vote, be represented in goverment by elected officials who win the majority of their constituents’ votes and the right to protest.  The right to vote is the only leveling ground which makes everyone equal.  Doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, woman or man, gay or straight, healthy or sick, tall or short, white/black/brown/yellow/red/green with purple polka dots: we all have the right to vote and expect that vote to be cast and counted as it was intended.  Without that right, we become second class citizens, chattel, collateral damage  and lowly subjects to an imperialist society.

The line of “Convert to Obama or else” is drawn in the sand.  We are all on trial and the O-bots and the MSM are judge, jury and executioner.  Families, friendships, private property and jobs have suffered because of this ideological divide.  The Democratic primary caucuses, the RBC meeting and at the Democratic Convention were the signs of the widening rift.  On one side, Democrats who believe in  “one person = one vote” tenets of Democracy and on the other, Democrats who believe that having an African-American candidate trumps Democracy, despite him being the most inexperienced presidential candiadate in the history of the United States, and regardless if it means stealing votes for that candidate to ”win.”  

Having an African-American president has been one of my biggest dreams just like having a female president serve in my lifetime.  But I don’t want that president to come to office if he/she had to steal votes to get there.   I would not feel a sense of pride in their presidency, in fact I’d feel the same way I feel about George W. Bush, that he/she was selected not elected and was illegitimately holding an office that was not chosen by the voting majority.  Current Democrats are acting as if the only way of becoming a millionaire is to rob a bank.  Of course this is not the only way to become a millionaire, but many in the Democratic Party have been infected with this ”ends justify the means” haka that desecrates our American ideals of respecting the sanctity of “one person = one vote.”

Not too long ago (but what seems an eternity) what filled me with pride as a Democrat was that we were on the “good guys” side.  We defended civil rights, women’s rights, gay rights, voter rights, housing rights, etc.  As a liberal, I want everybody to have a good paying job , a decent place to live, a good public school to send your kids, have a good doctor, participate in the American dream of buying your own home and for everyone to live a prosperous happy life living under a government that is for the people, by the people.  While knowing that certain candidates did not have a full grasp to the needs of middle to lower income Americans, nor have the fighting spirit to defend them, I stood by my party for decades as they rolled out candidate after candidate who I voted for because I was a Democrat.  I stood by them because they earned the majority of our party’s votes and because they had Democratic principles (despite that some of them were a bit “right-of-center” to my more liberal views.)  I don’t feel that sense of pride anymore, I don’t feel that the Democrats are the “good guys” because the current Democratic Party morphed into the “enemy” and it’s eating its own just to win.  It’s become the blue-tinged version of the Neo-Con Republican Party with an “O” instead of a “W.” 

We are accosted and harassed with hundred-million dollar HAKAs through every media vehicle.  We face the “Convert to Obama or else” threats every waking second of every day.  We are force-fed misogyny and unbridled zeal to destroy, defame, denounce, decry anything that opposes Obama, even if that opposition has the evidence to  prove Obama’s lies and voter fraud.  Even the simplest “I don’t think he’s experienced” is met with accusatory and inflammatory charges of racism (even if you are a POC like me). 

But what keeps us strong here at The Confluence is that we understand that “who we are is who were were.”  Our Founding Fathers (and Mothers!), our great abolitionists, our heroic civil rights and women’s rights leaders all fought valiantly to defend our American right to cast a vote, be represented in government and to live productive and healthy lives as a free people.  Free people means that we can say what we want, do what we want, think what we want and vote how we want and to respect those that have a difference of opinion.   The MSM and O-bot bloggers don’t get that we follow “democratic principles” and not just “Democrats.”.  They think we are outcasts, the shrieking band of paranoid holdouts, the pariahs of the Democratic party because we are not falling in line with the current Democratic Party. 

I have a message for them: 

If you are voting for Obama, good for you!  But please, stop harassing me to vote for him.  This is not the Democratic Party I once knew and no one living in the United States should have their right to vote surpressed, like mine was.  By enabling such deeds, we cease to exist as a “free” nation and by supressing our protest and our votes, you are murdering the precious right of Democracy and of critical thinking.   Thomas Jefferson said:

“Difference of opinion leads to enquiry, and enquiry to truth; and I am sure…we both value too much the freedom of opinion sanctioned by our Constitution, not to cherish its exercise even where in opposition to ourselves.” –Thomas Jefferson to P. H. Wendover, 1815.

I, like many in this forum, have exercised our right to critical thought.   We’ve gathered the facts and decided a long time ago that Barack Obama is not going to have our vote due to the voter fraud in the Democratic primaries/caucuses/RBC/DNC Convention, rampant misogyny promoted by his surrogates and supporters, his glaring inexperience and his failure to win the popular vote in the Democratic Party.  If there is to be that Civil War in the Democratic Party, let it be so.  The current Democratic Party does not speak for me since they ceased being “Democratic”  during the 2008 primaries.  I could care less what anyone thinks of me at this point.  I care about this document that’s right here, which says:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

 

The more you push, the more I resist.  I follow Democratic principles, not people who call themselves “Democrats.”  So Don’t Tread on Me !

  3. This post sums up exactly how I feel. Just today I was thinking how I used to be proud to call myself a Democrat – the do-gooder party, the party for all the people.

    I also remember thinking that if Obama had been a white woman he would not have been taken seriously. Sharon Palin proves that point. On paper, she’s more qualified than he is. If Clinton and Obama switched backgrounds, Clinton would have been toast. If the media can accept Obama as a legitimate candidate, then why not Palin?

    2. Dems are the only party for women’s rights
    3. Repubs stole the 2000 & 2004 elections, and will try to steal this year; Dems are honest
    4. ALL Repubs are rac*sts, all Dems support civil rights
    5. MSM loves Repubs
    6. Repubs are divisive, Dems are uniters
    7. Bush/Cheney used patriotism as a weapon, therefore McCain/Palin are using patriotism
    8. Bush/Cheny used religion as a weapon, therefore McCain/Palin are using religion
    9. Repubs & dereg are to blame for our bad economy
    10. Bush/Cheney used terrorism as a weapon, therefore we have nothing to fear from terrorism
    11. Bush/Cheney eroded US standing in the world, therefore we must attone by being nice and by electing a black
    12. Dems got pushed around for 8 years, therefore we must stand up and shout for Obama and kick McCain/Palin in the face.
    13. Dems must win this year at all costs to take back America & make it a civilized country again, even if we have to act like barbarians to do it.

    I think the Dem leaders know this stereotyping is on a 6-year old cognitive level, but I don’t think they care.

  11. I’m sure as h*ll not who I was. I just dropped off my absentee ballot, marked for McCain, and posted an “Another Democrat for McCain” sign in my yard. If you’d told me a year ago I’d be doing that, I’d have laughed in your face.

    Full disclosure: That sign is really not accurate. I re-registered Independent last month. Close enough.

  26. Don’t believe the RAS poll. I remember very distinctly during the primary James Carville stated that polls do not vary that drastically from day to day. So the RAS increase is too drastic of an increase overnight. Just more MSM/Poll fluff to exert peer pressure on the Obama holdouts.

    Yup, that is me, they took over on May 31st 2008 and I went into EXILE checking on developments finding others like me, some hiding out in the open, saying nothing but don’t plan on voting for Obama for the hostile take over.

    Some are just finding out what happened to Hillary and I am finding some that have been told some GOD awful things about Hillary that are simply not true.

    I used to pride myself in thinking we held the high road, we had the principles and that we were making small but consistent gains, then my bubble was popped! Hello, reality! :-(

    It’s very sad for me, having been a lifelong Democrat, to see my old Party kicking the little guys. I thought they stood up for us but now they’re just knocking us down and walking over our backs in some crazy attempt to elect a self-absorbed sham.

    Thanks, Gary, for calling out Jon Stewart. I think it’s been long overdue and something Clinton supporters should’ve done when Clinton was still in the race. I understand that Stewart will always preach to the choir and never actually be a journalist and call out liberals when they are wrong or sexist. This is something I never expected from him anyway. But I said enough when Stewart allowed the media attacks on Clinton slide and he became a part of it. Newsflash, Jon, but a lot of your FORMER viewers supported Clinton. I think it would have been brilliant if he had called the media out on their b.s. (which he’s supposed to do anyway when they go after a liberal) and made it humorous while proving a point. It’s something SNL were able to do for a short time. But Jon only proved that he fits right at home with the misogynistic blogger boys. It’s sad that so many shows I used to watch have been ruined for me after this election year. I won’t be turning on Jon anytime soon.

    In the days before Super Tuesday we were told California was too close to call but that Obama was gaining fast on Hillary and some polls gave him a narrow lead. We also had Oprah, Caroline Kennedy and Maria Terminator endorsing Teh Precious at rallies.

    SUSA, who said Hillary +10, was virtually ignored.

    SUSA was right.

    One big boo-boo in the other polls was the hispanic vote. The other was turn-out predictions. The incorrect polls overpredicted the pro-Obama turn-out.

  43. I do believe we are the silent majority. So many people I deal with very shyly bring up voting this year. Kinda feeling me out before stating to me how they feel about O and the Dems. It is very surprising who is not voting for O this year and why they won’t do it. They are not vocal about their opposition for fear of retribution later. We will just have to see come the election, but I would not be surprised if O “unexpectedly” lost.

  45. Regency — I guess I meant Zogby then. I still don’t believe Rasmussen either though. I’ll tell you exactly how this election is going to turn out — 289 EVs McCain & 249 EVs Obama. All the “toss up states” (FL, OH, NV, NC, MO, WV, IN) are going McCain; all the “leaning” states — both for McCain (GA, MN) & for Obama (CO, VA, NM & MI) are going for McCain. The only states Obama is going to win are going to be the solid Dem. ones — 249 EVs — and he will not win those by the margins they are saying. Everything else is going for McCain — if they were going for Obama they would be “solid” by now — all the undecideds are definitely going for McCain.

  56. I was thinking about that MoveOn chesnut on a previous thread.

    The more they call out the “ugliness” in the McCain campaign, the more I tune them out because I judge them to be untrustworthy. Too much cognitive dissonance. I’ve seen too much Obama Ugliness. I kind of think a lot of people have become bald-face liars, and the lies don’t even work anymore.

    This is the campaign that fueled the accusation that Clinton was calling for her opponent’s assassination. I will never forgive or forget that one. This is the campaign the produced the SC r@ce memo, cynically using r@ce as a political tool. Team BO is betting on the perpetual memory hole of American politics, I do believe.

    Hispanic voters aren’t very fond of Obama and neither are Asian voters, but the pollsters seem to think all non-whites will vote like AA voters.

    Most California Hispanics are Catholic which means they tend to be pro-life. Also, McCain does well with Hispanic voters.

  119. sm77 – Thanks so much for this post. I went and voted today. I kept staring at the little check mark next to John McCain/Sarah Palin and I had mixed emotions. I went ahead and cast my ballot, voting for all females down ticket whenever applicable. But President and Governor votes went for the Republican.

    When I got to my car I inexplicably got tears in my eyes. It’s that way you feel when you finally accept that a relationship is over. Today I finally broke up with the Democratic party.

    Interestingly enough, I avoided the main library in my part of Charlotte because I’d heard stories about what a zoo it was. I went to a smaller library just outside the city limits (angienc – I went to Matthews) and it was equally packed. From the time I got there to the time I left was 2 hours.

    This being NC, everyone in line eventually got chatty, but I noticed the woman behind me tense up when the folks behind her started chatting about Obama. A few minutes later she said something to me about how long it was all taking, and I said “They probably have to make sure there’s no dead people voting.” She laughed out loud at that, so I knew she was a McCain supporter.

  122. I think the more important issue regarding hispanics and this election is turnout. I do think most Hispanics who will vote will be doing so for Obama. But the enthusiasm is pretty low. Hispanics have been growing in their participation, but I’m not sure what it will be like in a couple weeks. Hillary would not only have gotten the Hispanic votes, but would have gotten them in droves. If you look at states like CA and TX, Hispanic participation in the primary was pretty significant and they went decidedly toward Hillary indicating pretty strongly that most of the “new voters” went to Hillary.

    Hispanics are very worried about the economy and don’t really like Republican economics these days.

  194. My dream is to have a president reeking of leadership qualities and it matters not if he/she is black, white, brown, green, blue, straight, gay, bi, male, female, Catholic, Jew, Protestant, Muslim, animist. I think you get the point.

    I want someone straight talking, concerned, involved, knowledgeable, trustworthy, sincere and looking out for all interests not just a handful.

    If there is such a beast, then whatever package they arrive in suits me. Simply voting “yes” to a candidate based on ra*ce, gender, party, or religion makes no sense whatsoever. That is how we came today to be presented with one such candidate who happens to be of color but with nothing else to back him up.

    Blindly supporting someone because he/she fits the ethnic mold is ridiculous on its face. It is what they bring to the table that is the final arbiter of decision. Anything else is self serving.

    I agree. I’m in Tallahassee, which is a blue spot in the middle of a huge red zone. With two major universities and all those State office workers and a fairly dense black population (25%), this area has been solid Democrat for as long as Florida has been a state.

    That may well change this year.

    From what I’ve been hearing, most of the people who I know are Democrats are voting McCain/Palin– they just aren’t advertising it. Most people around me know I’m a Republican, and tell me things they sometimes have a problem telling other Democrats.

    I’m getting a very strong, optimistic feeling about this.

    Then I bump into someone like our evening security guard. She is an absolutely lovely woman, 50-ish, whose entire attitude about the election is, “Well, we’ll see what happens when everyone goes out to vote. If you’re not happy with the way the election turns out, you can vote again in four years.”

    THAT woman, sweet and kindly as she is, is exactly the kind of person who scares the hell out of me. She seems to have absolutely NO CLUE what is happening this year.

Dobbs is actually just said the Bradley effect was not due to r@cism (there was two other big referendums that election — one to do with guns, both were “conservative” issues though –that caused a lot more people to come out & vote who usually didn’t & they voted against Bradley — if they hadn’t Bradley would have won) & it ticks him off to see otherwise reputable sources of news talking about the Bradley effect as if it was a legitimate thing & as if it had anything to do with r@cism. It arrived with a window shattered by a .22 caliber weapon. It had also been hit by an unknown number of paint balls from a paint ball gun or guns.     yes, i believe that the draft bill will be passed. i’ve been watching this dem bill (Rangel) for a while. there is a house and a senate version. there are no exceptions and it is gender neutral. draft “dodgers” will not be able to go to canada. an agreement regarding this was signed last year i believe between Canada and the US.
