The economy is in serious trouble and we’re looking forward to a Japanese style ‘recovery’. The times desperately call for an FDR or a Hillary Clinton. The DNC has given us Barack Obama. Thanks for nothing, Howard Dean. It goes without saying that none of us want 4 more years of Republican style economics so I hope John McCain gets religion.
After the stock markets closed yesterday, the two candidates, and Madame President Clinton, went to the Al Smith Dinner to roast one another. As expected, Senator Obama’s roast was all about, er, Senator Obama. He poked fun of his famed humility and the fact that he wasn’t really born in a manger. No, the truth is, he was born on Krypton and his father is Jorel. (Does he have the birth certificate???) Well, you can guess the rest. Yawwwwwwn.
John McCain, on the other hand, appears to be painfully aware of the actual dynamics of this year’s campaign and his own underdog status. His roast was funny, sarcastic and a not very subtle indictment of the media. The last bit about setting unreasonably high expectations skewered Obama and the pundits alike. Hillary seemed to enjoy herself more during McCain’s speech. Why not? She’s not going to have to worry about managing the economy next year.
So, for the Friday Funnies, here is McCain’s roast:
McCain roast, part 1
McCain roast, part 2
Filed under: Presidential Election 2008 | Tagged: Al Smith Dinner, McCain Roast

I thought McCain was very funny. And I almost fell out of my chair when he skewered Olbermann, Tweety and MSNBC. And the crowd for the most part seemed to agree with him about that.
And yes, Hillary seemed to be enjoying McCain’s routine a lot.
I’m not one to usually comment on female politicians attire since we seldom mention what the men folks are wearing but Hillary’s sparkly white thingy was very flattering to her. I thought so anyway.
He was very funny, but what he said about Obama and the Al Smith Fundation was also very gracious and classy. Nice job.
foundation
Why is he the underdog again?
Sigh.
Holy Sheeeeeeet, John! Give Barack a little bit of hell, why don’tya!
That was fantastic and I agree: Hillary really seemed to be enjoying the digs at BO that JM was giving.
Thank you so much for the link for those of us who can’t find this stuff from so very far away.
It’s too bad Bill and KO weren’t there. Bill would have been dying and KO would have tried to attack JM.
OMFG- he was sooooo funny- he really skewered them.
Nice to see Hillary laughing too.
Okay dayshift, take over. I’m going to bed.
Don’t think there is going to be an October surprise.
But I also think McCain is going to be our next Pres. It’s too close for Barry.
Does the Catholic Church know something we don’t know? They normally do not invite pro-choice candidates to speak at the Al Smith dinner. Rudy Giuliani was not invited. John Kerry was not invited. Yes, they were Catholics, but so what. Plus, Biden is a Catholic. Hmmmm….
BB: Obama’s debate remarks on abortion seem to be in line with your speculation.
Riverdaughter–somehow I knew you’d write about the Al Smith dinner this morning!
Wasn’t it funny how McCain could pronounce “apostolic” without a hitch while Obama The Eloquent tripped over the word “diocese”??
BB and RD
True, but in light of all that’s happened this year, especially the way the r@ce card has been an integral part of this campaign, had Obama not been invited it would have been a media topic today. Throughout its history the Catholic Church has not had a great reputation where r@ce is concerned.
I thought McCain was hilarious. In fact, I thought if he could talk like that about Obama at political rallies (not the gracious part, which was very gentlemanly, but the funny part), he might get more support. Obama’s comments were flat. The Superman thing was not funny–everyone knows Superman believed in truth, justice and the American way, and we all know that describes McCain a lot more than Obama.
That was right up there with Colbert’s roast of Bush at the Press Dinner. Obama seemed to take it better than did Bush.
This was McCain at the top of his form – full of wit and understanding. Obama looked and sounded like the pompous ass that I believe he is. When one’s head is full of looking cool it’s hard to be witty.
McCain’s speech was fantastic. He was funny, self-deprecating, and classy. This comes at a perfect time in the campaign; the time where Americans decide which candidate they would rather sit down and have a beer with. After watching both speeches, the answer is clear. I so hope this gets a lot of play in the media. I’m sure it will make a difference in how the media cover John McCain.
Looking for integrity,
The President already has too much power. He should not be able to hold a threat of being called racist over every American. And he certainly should not have the press running interference for him against ordinary working people like Joe the plumber.
It’s because they’re Catholic. Considered insulting to Cardinal Egan to have pro-choice Catholics there when they are supposed to be banned from communion or some such. Don’t want him to be uncomforable. That’s what I heard this a.m. anyway.
McCain was so funny. Another reason Hillary shoud have been the nominee-she would have given as good as she got. Obambi was pretty lame.
Hi RD: Can we put up part#2 of the McCain video? I want to see the part where John said he will tell KO where to put the “mission accomplish” sign.
This is really funny stuff and I really like how he took on Tweety & KO.
sophia: Part 2 is already up there. It’s the second video.
McCain spoke some uncomfortable truths. He pointed out Bill Clinton’s reluctance to campaign for Obama. There was some real brutality in his roast. I had heard that McCain tended to be sarcastic and sharp and it comes through loud and clear. He also eviscerates the media in a way that doesn’t seem like he’s joking. My question is, did he write his own material?
riverdaughter, on October 17th, 2008 at 7:50 am
Almost everything he said was the truth. He mentioned Acorn and hoping that there won’t be too many dead votes. He connected Acorn to Obama. He wasn’t so subtle.
I wondered who wrote it, too. My daughter asked me and I said that I didn’t know but was sure it was no one from Hollywood. I think Mac’s persona was a plus for him- he has a mischievous demeanor that heightens the humor. Obama has that snobby thing going that mkes him seem more petulant than humorous.
riverdaughter, on October 17th, 2008 at 7:50 am Said:

___________________________________________
I was wondering that, too. It struck me at the time that if he did then he is a much sharper wit than anyone is giving him credit for. I think if this were he John McCain we had been seeing for the last few weeks it would be a much closer race now. I hope he can keep it up.
The Biden “Quaylism” from yesterday ranks up there on with the lighter side of this race — “J-O-B-S is a three-letter word.”
Imagine if Sarah Palin had done this?
Perhaps the Archdiocese was afraid not to invite He Who Was Born in a Manger.
I’d be surprised to hear that either one of the candidates wrote their own speeches. McCain’s was so good, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Peggy Noonan had a hand in it. Regardless, both candidates had final approval, and both candidates had to deliver the speeches themselves.
The contrast between the two was striking. John McCain came off as a regular guy. Barack Obama came off as dry and humorless.
I agree with whomever said that Hillary would have delivered a great speech at the dinner had she been afforded the opportunity.
Downticket: The ACORN thing really troubles me because as Democrats, we should be in favor of registering voters. But just like the primaries were full of loopholes that were subject to abuse, the general election is as well and some states are more vulnerable than others. It wouldn’t be a problem if the candidate wasn’t eager to abuse the system but as we have seen, Obama seems all too willing to push the envelope. He may end up giving ACORN a bad name, which will positively *delight* the Republicans.
The man is a disaster.
I think if this were he John McCain we had been seeing for the last few weeks it would be a much closer race now. I hope he can keep it up.
But McCain was doing well until the economic crisis and the race is still close. McCain moved up in the polls yesterday.
I went to youtube to see what I missed by not hearing Obama’s toast. I got through about 2minutes, I had missed nothing.
Janicen: Peggy Noonen??? Are you kidding me? Peggy Noonen has absolutely no sense of humor. I suspect McCain and his staff wrote it. I’d heard before that he has a sardonic wit. It fits.
Interesting article
http://www.zombietime.com/lefts_big_blunder/
We have been living this for the last year.
The best part of the whole thing was seeing Hillary having such a good time. She really seemed to enjoy Mac’s jokes about her and Bill.
Honora: I listened to the whole thing. He wasn’t bad but as I said before, he was all about himself. He stayed away from skewering anyone. His roast lacked the topicality of McCain’s roast that would allow him to stick it to his enemies.
He was smooth, charming, vain and utterly boring.
There was an interesting analysis on the local news here in Richmond, VA last night. The reporter said there were over 300,000 (I don’t have the exact numbers at my fingertips) newly registered voters in VA. Based on the voting trends in ‘04, the reporter said that even if 60 percent of all of the new voters went for Obama, McCain will win VA by around 50,000 votes. That assumes that everyone else who votes will follow the party line they followed in ‘04. The reporter did not account for any PUMA crossovers.
Having just moved from WA to VA this past summer, I can tell you that there are at least two newly registered voters in VA who will vote for McCain.
The war on Joe the Plumber is raging on. And it’s the war on us, the non-Obama voters
http://edgeoforever.wordpress.com/2008/10/17/the-war-on-voters/
RD, the quality of McCain’s speech was at a very high level. I’m no fan of Peggy Noonan, but she can write a helluva speech. Maybe it wasn’t Noonan, but it was clearly someone of her stature.
My favorite part was about Bill. McCain wove all the truths beautifully. And even if someone else wrote the material, he still delivered it perfectly.
I was surprised to see that CNN was playing a long clip. I thought it was very good free publicity for Mac. The public will certainly respond to this, and it signals that he is quite capable of continuing to call things out.
Go Johnny!
“He was smooth……”
RD, yes he was. So smooth it was if he had a film of oil on the surface.
I watched both clips again. Even if McCain did not write this – and doubtless he had help – he delivered it with a prefect sense of irony. So many of his jokes were jokes against himself. His wit was biting and penetrating. It was a first rate performance.
Since all this ACORN stuff has come out, has anyone else wondered if they are connected with the busloads of people who overran the caucuses? I have. It occurred to me when I heard about homeless people being bribed to vote with cigarettes, etc. They are such a large organizatioon that it would be easy for them to get people together to go to the various caucus sites. They are known for organizing demonstrations and such. Just my little tinfoil conspiracy theory.
Excuse me everyone, today is my birthday and what I really want is the October surprise. I really don’t think that it is too much to ask for.
Joan, I have no doubt that there were ACORN people bussed from state to state for the caucuses. I read somewhere (maybe it was here) that there were so many people bussed in from Chicago to Iowa for the caucuses that at one cadidates’ forum Joe Biden made a joke about it saying something like, “It’s so nice to get to talk to the people of Iowa…” and then he turned to the direction of the Obama supporters and said, “…and Chicago…”
janicen-You are in Richmond? I am in Midlothian. I met someone at My Two Cents on BTR that lives in Chesterfield a few nights ago. Small world!
Happy Birthday, Honora. May all your wishes come true.
Joan! I’m in Midlothian too!
That’s funny, janicen. I can’t help but like Biden-he is so gafferific ’cause he tell’s it like it is.
OMG! Where? I live in Salisbury.
ACORN’s possible presence at the caucuses would not surprise me in the least. Hearing of the intimidation, strong arming, disrespect, and takeover of the venues, I can believe that these are the tactics these workers have been instructed to use. Whatever, the fraud is already running rampant in at least 12 states which means that the final outcome on November 5th is already suspect in my eyes.
If Obama manages to “win” I will view this as just another impotent victory just as we witnessed in 2000. ACORN is must too organized to have these transgressions merely viewed as coincidence.
Walton Lake. My husband’s cousin lives in Salisbury.
Happy Birthday, Honora! May you get your wish!
Happy Birthday Honora!!!
LOL, Bravo Sen. McCain!
Hillary is the only other candidate who ran for POTUS, who could make me laugh out loud with her wit and delivery.
Apparently, his guest hosting over the years on SNL, as well as his appearances on TDS many times,
trading barbs with Jon Stewart, really helped him hone his comedic skills.
Funny, funny, funny!
PJ, I was at the caucuses in WA. They were definitely flooded with outsiders but the one I was at, they looked more like Democracy for America types, young, not too bright but fast-talkers and constantly texting on their phones.
I am waiting for a plumber this morning for a clogged sink. I wonder if his name will be “Joe”?
BB-
I agree with you, especially on Joe the Plumber. Either way it was agood thing they were all invited. It gave the public a chance to hear them in another venue and watch the interplay.
Happy Birthday, Honora!
———————————
Yes, McCain was much funnier than Obama. John’s timing and delivery (as someone pointed out last night) were spot on. Obama paused at awkward moments, flubbed several words, and sometimes would break into this creepy (at least, to me) grin and chuckle after he delivered a line. I laughed at a few of his jokes, but John’s roast had me howling with laughter.
Unbelievable, but the NY Times excuses, that’s right — forgives and excuses, Acorn’s transgressions and defends them against criticism. Part of their editorial:
Unbelievable! They take as fact the number of 1% fraudulent registrations supplied by the group who filed the fraudulent registrations. Even if you expected Acorn to be accurate in estimating their fraud, I guess 13,000 fraudulent voters are an acceptable fudge factor. Typical ends justification for whatever means advance the all too obvious goal.
Happy Birthday Honora!
I love McCain’s roast. So snarky! McCain and Palin are The Snarky Ones.
And I bet Bill was bustin’ a gut when he watched.
Thanks for posting the videos RD.
Happy Birthday Honora!
Sorry, janicen. Had to answer the darn phone. I know Walton Lake well. My kids have always had lots of friends there. Thank goodness they are driving themselves now. My son is in college now but my daughter is a Junior at Midlo High.
I can’t believe you are so close. I thought I was the only PUMA around. Email me at tackytiki at mac dot com.
janicen, Hello VA sister!
I’ve lived here my entire life and this will be the first year that I vote Republican. My husband, another lifelong Democrat, is voting for McKinney. I’m going to vote for downticket Dems Mark Warner and Judy Feder. I doubt that Feder has a chance against Wolf even though it’s supposedly a tighter race (VA’s 10th district) than expected, but I’m happy to do my part for the 30% solution.

Prolix,
Pardon my french, but f@*k the New York Times.
I really miss a morning paper!! There are none left to read.
Just watched Italian tv, (RAI) it has more news on the US elections now.
It had a special on Joe the Plumber. Fake name, fake job, doesn’t pay taxes-I found that so unfair.
It wasn’t as if he was an actor or something.
Oh and then they went on to connect him to Keating, McCain fraud and the Repubs…
Prolix: I read that same article this morning. What in God’s name has happened to this once sturdy paper? ACORN should be openly investigated since another claim has been made that a brother of the head of ACORN has embezzled at least one million dollars over a 12 year period and only resigned in June when a whistleblower came forward and made the charge.
If nothing else, this organization, with ties to voter fraud, intimidation, Fannie and Freddie, needs a closer look. The NYT has seriously lost whatever credibility it once had as the paper of conscience and reckoning. It is slowly slipping into tabloid range.
Joanieb, I agree and I like it when you talk like that.
Prolix, do you like all things french?
The media
on Tony Rezko: Ho hum, nothing to see here, move along
on Joe the Plumber: Who IS this man? How much money does he REALLY earn? WHEN did he go bald? The public has a right to know!
Honora, What a wonderful wish! I hope it comes true and that you have a delightful and surprising birthday.
Good morning Pat!
Rats! I have to go to work just as the fun starts!
Pat, I remember the resignation and the little press it got back in June. Some of the wise sages around here had Acorn’s number then and started calling them out.
It is an organization funded primarily from tax dollars to perpetrate fraud on the system. The Sec. of State of Ohio has even gone to the Supreme Court asking that she be allowed to violate the law and not sync up voter rolls. What in the name of Bozo the clown are we coming to?
The first thing that turned me off to Obama was his fake preacher schtick but that was followed quickly by the hateful attitude of his supporters. My original dismay soon turned to loathing. These are people I can not align myself with. There’s no way I could vote for their candidate even if I wanted to.
I was just reading a story about Joe the Plumber–trashing him for not having a license and having some debts. Look at this comment on the story from someone in Sri Lanka:
Ravi Abay, Colombo, Sri Lanka
I think people will get that registering Disney characters and dead people is not on, even if the NYT doesn’t. JFK “won” by only 1% of the vote, so it can make a difference, especially in big states like Ohio. Let’s hope the SCOTUS hands it back to Ohio’s Sec’y of State on a platter.
CNN: Obama only leads by 6 now. That means McCain is leading.
Hey NAG, Why do you keep coming here? You know you’re not welcome. This is stalker behavior. It’s just not healthy.
If Obama wins, it will not be the end of the world for me. It will be just like the past 8 years: A terrible President who was elected through nefarious means. Honestly I think it will be harder on BO’s supporters as they watch their pretty fantasy become ugly reality.
Honora,
Happy Birthday!! I hope you have a lovely day.
Attacking ACORN is now equated with being a ra*cist. Few in the media are taking this seriously. I am saying this aloud: if Obama wins this nation will be controlled by the whims of the Black Congressional Caucus backed by a rather shady group of supporters and money men who have made this travesty a reality. Label me ra*cist for this comment but I think it will bear itself out if he wins.
I am in moderation with Joe the Plumber.
Pat, he’s cleaning out the t-r-0-l-l filter — stand back and be careful.
Honora,
Happy Birthday-hope you have some fun!
I was trying to give my brain a break from the news yesterday so I watched Fox’s Sarah Connor Chronicles instead.
So much for that plan.
I had nightmares about the Obamas being cyborgs/Ceo’s of Skynet and plotting world takeover.
Oh, wait, was that a dream?
Prolix: Funny!!
bostonboomer, the quote you bolded — “The faster all citizens of the world can vote in US elections the better for us all.” — fits with what we are hearing about some Obama campaign contributions from overseas. This is scary. Who do these people think they are? It’s OUR country, damn it.
“The faster all citizens of the world can vote in US elections the better for us all. We cannot trust the average US Joe to do the right thing.”
Typical international frat-boy mentality.
I would say “We cannot trust the media to do the right thing.”
I do not understand the concept of early voting. I can understand absentee balloting but early voting is ridiculous. Much like “vote early and often”.
More jocularity here! Time to put the gloves ON!!!!!!

The whole list of the crappy things the Democratic Party and their pick Obama should be dealt with immediately!!!
(Includes pic and video)
Wow, bostonboomer, this is chilling!
We know a lot of monet for Obama comes from abroad, and I have been suspecting that Saudi Arabia owning CNN and AOL has something to do with the media coverage , but this sense of entitlement is scary!
Early voting rationale: When democracy becomes kool enough, we will vote on one day as long as they had out Ipods and jello-shots.
[...] out there, in the world, everyone feels entitled to overrule us The faster all citizens of the world can vote in US elections the better for us all. We cannot [...]
—bah I forgot about the r word again, damn you obots!
I liked the speeches from both of them a lot. I actually didn’t find Obama as threatening and was enjoying his speech as well (though definetely not as much as McCain’s).
Thankfully, my 15 minutesof delusion were shatterred when I logged onto some blogs and saw how the press was on a complete witch hunt against Joe the Plumber simply because he had the audacity to ask Obama a question.
With FISA, the constant threat of being called a r@cist, and the media and academia on his side, combined with the destruction of a private citizen, I ask you folks, does this man not make you think of Hugo Chavez? Already banks and other institutions are essentially being nationalized, paving the way for the One.
Can I just say here, before I forget, what a wonderful resource and oasis and source of wisdom and all good things this site has been. I don’t know how I’d get through these days without all of you. The other sites that were anti-Obama or Obama-skeptic, sheesh: TalkLeft has steeped itself in the Kool-Aid and NoQuarter has been overrun by conspiracy theorists and rightwing ranters. The Confluence, by stark contrast, remains a gathering of smart, funny, utterly cool people I am proud to “know” in this cyberkinetic way.
and now the Obama campaign is claiming that John didn’t vet Joe the Plumber!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG, HE’S JUST A PRIVATE CITIZEN!!!! WHAT THE HELL DOES HIS QUESTION HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT!?!?! DO I NEED TO BE VETTED THE NEXT TIME I ASK A POLITICIAN A QUESTION!?!?!?!?!?!?
(*&@#(*@#@^#@(#&*@*#&)@&!#^~*^!#&!)(@*)*)#@&#)(@#*@()#*@()#*@)(&$!!!!!!!!!!
Maverick I can do, but Messiah is above my paygrade.
Sal, really?
Wasn’t Obama the one who went in his neighborhood, for his vote?
Isn’t Joe being crucified now for refusing to give it to him? With good reason?
Maybe Obama campaign took seriously McCain’s joke that Joe has replaced his entire campaign staff…
Sal, on October 17th, 2008 at 9:57 am Said:

If that is the answer, the question must have been:
What does the DNC and Obama have in common with McCain and Joe the Plumber?
No time for the National Anthem.
http://www.wmur.com/news/17737383/detail.html?taf=man
Mac really threw him off last night, didn’t he? If this is the best crap they can come up with after two nights of McCain rocking it out, they are so not ready for primetime.
edgeoforeever,
First I must admit to being a frequent lurker at your site for the last month or two now.
Violet over at hillaryclintonforum.net is the first one who saw it on Fox. Isn’t it crazy? This is what private citizens can expect when we dare question the Messiah. I just wonder where was all the outrage when that self-proclaimed alleged minister asked McCain if he had ever called his wife a c***.
http://www.hillaryclintonforum.net/discussion/showthread.php?t=36638
prolix,
I think McCain’s response should be that Obama needs to vet himself since he doesn’t seem to know what is going to come out of his mouth sometimes either lol
John Smith, on October 17th, 2008 at 10:06 am
WOW! and tot hink Obama just talked about how he got spanked in NH during the primaries
Remember Sheila Blair-the one dakinikat said was so good?
Something interesting:
Happy Birthday, Honora! May your wish come true, and may you enjoy your day.
Sorry to be a downer, but . . . My McCain-Al Smith Dinner high was dampened by Mc’s nervous performance on Letterman. He deferred his power to Dave and missed some opportunities to clearly explain ACORN and Ayers to a large audience when asked. He mumbled a few things but didn’t clearly draw the connections, and I was bummed. Without his explanation, people/media/Obie continue to fall back on the 8-years-old, he-had-nothin’-to-do-with-it riffs.
Re: ACORN, one of the bigger problems is that they used their monies allocated for housing instead for voter registration.
Hillary,
This would be a real good time for you to pipe up and tell the media to stop going after private citizens. It would help you a lot in 2012 if this charlatan loses.
Sal,
I don’t think we can count on Hillary to do anything that could potentially hurt Obama. It makes me sad. I think she would have been better off if she had really fought for the nomination. But maybe she has reason that we don’t know about. I don’t know what to think.
DancingOpossum, we might be cool, but we’re not “Kool”.
She fought. She lost long before Denver.
Speaking of Hillary, I bet if she was the nominee and Joe the Plumber had asked her his question, not only would he decide to vote for her, he’d be out there helping campaign for her.
He’d be plumbing at both her houses.
Regency, thanks for posting that!
The frequent response you get from people on the voter-registration fraud is “well, it doesn’ t mean they can vote fraudulently,” etc. Apparently, it does.
Not that BO’s theft of the primary is news to any PUMA.
A lot of Senator Government’s jokes fell flat…. It think he actually got booed for his AIG joke…
If he cheated there and managed to only lose by .5%, then how much worse did he cheat in places where he won by great margins? North Carolina anyone. Indiana which was Hillary’s. FIXED.
votermom, on October 17th, 2008 at 10:23 am
I don’t doubt that. She won 70% of the vote in NY in 2006, and trust me the GOP-Dem split is not that high even in this blue state
Lots of us conservatives respect her hard work and knowledge, and had no compunction about voting for her.
bostonboomer, on October 17th, 2008 at 10:21 am
someone over at hcf was speculating that maybe they got threatened or something. unfrotunately, I can actually see that happening.
It’s too bad for Joe, his life is gonna get torn up from here on out and most likley he will not be able to practice his trade for a while because officials are putting the screws to him.
Like I said, Hugo Chavez anyone?
Don’t forget the gerrymandering (redrawing) of Congressional Districts by the likes of Brazile… from 2004 on.
It is crazy that they are attacking Joe The Plumber. It was Obama’s ‘boneheaded’ answer and not any action by Joe that started all of this. ‘Redistributing the wealth’ is of course what many government programs do (and as a progressive, that is a good thing), Obama just needed to be lots smarter in explaining it. I am sure that if he had more experience (like the eight years of Hillary’s presidency) under his belt he would not have said anything that dumb.
Regency, on October 17th, 2008 at 10:18 am
whoa! finally there is more evidence for what Pumas have been saying. This is different because there are records to view and not just Hillary’s supporters(bitter clingy people) words.
Regency,
I understand that she fought. But she lost because of cheating and fraud. I’m just disappointed that she didn’t make a case against it. I realize you disagree and I respect that. But I don’t think Hillary is going to get another chance anyway.
We need some leader some time to stand up and fight, because this country is slipping into fascism. When private citizens are investigated and attacked by the press because they mildly question the favored Presidential candidate, we are in serious trouble.
When private citizens are investigated and attacked by the press because they mildly question the favored Presidential candidate, we are in serious trouble.
I agree. This is really frightening. This guy asks one question that creates a problem for Dear Leader, and now HE is the subject of relentless investigation and attack? The more I see, the more frightened I become. This is extreme, even by Bush standards. Why does the media have such an irrational investment in his candidacy? There is something really disturbing about this picture.
Perhaps ACORN IS the October surprise.
Question: what happens if what happened in NM can be proven for all other questionable state results as well? What happens if it turns out that Hillary was the legal winner?
If I’m not mistaken this is a non-partisan Federal investigation, and would mean that these things would become public information.
Would Obama have to concede to Hillary?
There is no rule. If he does have to concede, the party ca n choose who they like.
sorry looking but that would only be the ending in the musical version. Life is not in reality fair.
Happy birthday Honora!
Radio Televisions Italiana and other non-US news outlets are presenting the biased view they see in our media. It’s really too bad.
The topic should have been Joe the Plumber’s point not his personal life. His name is not actually fake, he uses his middle name -Joe’s much easier to remember. He didn’t seek Obama out, Obama sought people to talk to in that neighborhood. He was considering buying a business, license or no ( and he may well have believed that he could work without a license if his boss was licensed. ) which meant he would be taxed more – the average small business earns 273K, and his divorce and tax lien have nothing to do with the question at hand.
But that is Obama’s MO, don’t go for the issues, attack the person (Jack Ryan et al.).
It is frightening.
Honora,
Happy birthday!!
A 12-year old girl in Florida wore a T-shirt to school with the words “Go Sarah Go” on the front and McCain/Palin on the back. She was called “racist” by her schoolmates.
http://www.myfoxorlando.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=7666795&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.3.1
But when she wore it to school she learned just how tough politics can be.
“Some of the students were calling me racist because I was Caucasian,” she said. “I wanted the Caucasian man to win. And I told them that’s not true. It’s my freedom of speech, it’s my opinion.”
Jones’ parents said they’re not mad at the school; they just want everyone — including their daughter — to voice their opinions constructively, WOFL reported.
I understand that she fought. But she lost because of cheating and fraud. I’m just disappointed that she didn’t make a case against it.
bb: Me too. I understand why she didn’t, and still support her–she’s human. When Ickes made that impassioned, truthful protest at the RBC meeting, I thought there would be a fight to the Convention. HRC said she wanted to hear from us, and would “talk to party leaders.” Obviously, as Rangel indicated, they strong-armed her into pulling out. Bill also said recently, “We have seen what can happen if there is a fight within the party, and we didn’t want to do that.”
But my question, as a PUMA, is: WHEN do you do it then? If the Party violated it’s own Charter, and the absolute fundamentals of our democracy, then isn’t that the time when it is absolutely necessary? That’s what the Founding Fathers did. Nancy “Impeachment is off the table” Pelosi didn’t do it when Bush & Co. eroded so many of our basic rights and principles. If HRC submitted documentation re: caucus fraud to the FBI, then they certainly know about it. They also know about the manipulation of FL & MI, and the engineered roll call vote. This goes way beyond the “toughness of politics.” This was fraud. It always goes back to that core issue for me, and it would be glorious, just once in my lifetime, to see a leader stand up and say, “NO! This is wrong, and not who we are as a people!” Maybe I’m just too much of an idealist, but…that’s my dream.
Since when are people not entitled to be called by their middle names if they want to be? Is there going to be a backlash from all this media haka, or are Americans simply too passive to care?
“Some of the students were calling me racist because I was Caucasian,” she said. “I wanted the Caucasian man to win. And I told them that’s not true. It’s my freedom of speech, it’s my opinion.”
a baby PUMA is born…
Honora-
You’re right. I guess we keep hoping for true justice and fairness in our hearts but life experience has shown us it isn’t always the case.
Happy Birthday Honora!!!!
The MSM is vetting Joe the Plumber MORE than they vetted Obama.
PATHETIC!!!!!!!
Hi Everyone,
Wow. It is getting testy, isn’t it?
You gotta love the crackdown already in place. Next we’ll find out that joe the plumber is a registered sex offender. No room for opinion or judgment, only what is fed us by the MSM.
We’ll all have to march lockstep according to the dictates of bo… if he wins.
Not convinced… Sending in my CA ballot today… first time vote for a Repug for Pres… but what’s the choice?
For a little levity, you might enjoy the link below [sorry, it may not be clickable but rather cut and paste]…
Let’s keep smiling, all the while that we remember that the puma has strength and stealth as it’s two major characteristics…
We may not be polled or counted but in the quiet of marking our ballots, our power WILL become known.
Keep on, pumas, and keep the faith.
For levity:

Is ANYONE standing up for Joe the Plumber? This is absolutely ridiculous. The guy just asked a question. Don’t pay attention to the man behind the curtain! Let’s do anything we can to distract people from the actual issue: Obama’s plan for the economy that was exposed with his clumsy answer. Let’s make it all about Joe now!
Discredit, deny, evade. We see it over and over again. He’s now throwing Joe off the ballot.
our media sucks. this is a headline at yahoo news:
Colin Powell might endorse Obama
when did they start reporting what “might” happen? that must be an awfully big newspaper. what’s next?
Aliens might invade, news at a 11
fif,
Pretty soon it is going to be too late. It may be too late already. We really don’t live in anything resembling a democracy anymore. We don’t have Habeas Corpus rights if the President decides we don’t.
The loss of Habeas Corpus removed almost every right in the Bill of Rights. If you can be labeled a “terrorist” by your President and locked up with new judcial review and no lawyer, you have no right to freedom of speech or anything else.
The President has also been given control over the National Guard units in each state. He has set up a regular army unit based in Colorado to police U.S. citizens.
We are no different from Soviet Russia except that the real clampdown hasn’t yet happened. But President Bush or President Obama could do it at will. This has been the situation for 2-3 years now, and Congress has done nothing except exempt the telecoms from accountability for spying on us. And I don’t believe for one minute the spying has stopped.
I’m sorry to be alarmist, but the Germans thought they were a free people too until the crackdown came.
I’m just disappointed that she didn’t make a case against it.
Who was going to listen to Hillary? Remember all the stuff about her stopping people from voting in Nevada. FOX news wasn’t going to report on something that would help make Hillary the nominee. Remember when PUMAs were talking about the convention, FOX interviewed PUMAs but never really explained that Hillary not being on ballot was not a democratic tradition. They bashed her and talked about how the Clintons were controlling the convention and making it about themselves. FOX focused about the PUMAs being bitter and not voting for McCain but they never really went in depth with explaining anything at all to their viewers about why the PUMAs were angry. With no media to report the real news to people anything Hillary did, the media told people how she was trying to steal the nomination from Obama and acting like the presidency was owed to her. Obama had/has the media to spin everything for him.
gary, NBC announced that this morning that Colin Powell is giving some kind of speech/statement (I wasn’t paying attention) and they speculated that it might be an Obama endorsement.
I would not be surprised since the Obama campaign likes to pull out big name endorsements at strategic moments. Like Edwards, frex. What’s interesting to me is that they usually do this “big endorsements” when Obama is down in the polls.
bb: and let’s not forget the fascist element of it all–the corporate power and control behind it all. People don’t realize this does not happen in a single act–it is a gradual erosion, and one day you wake up and you are no longer in a free society. The intensity and relentlessness of the media propaganda machine is the most insidious part of it all. It is mass mind control, and people have no idea they have been programmed. That’s why we are all fighting with our friends, family and neighbors. They shriek this talking points, and do not realize we have heard them all before, and they were produced by the Obama campaign and disseminated by these sources.
I have to take a shower and get ready for work. If I start to think about this too much in one sitting, I get really upset. And then on the way to work, I have to pass 9,000 Obama signs (in NY/MA). Forgive the sheeple, they know not what they do.
Happy Birthday Honora! Later PUMA family.
I don’t think Hillary could do anything in the Primary to deal with the fraud. It would have been speculation and certainly would not have played well in the media that was calling for her head.
The DNC leadership was in on it – clearly, because they OWN the caucuses. They also manipulated delegates and strong-armed the super delegates. What is ANYONE supposed to do in the face of that onslaught? We have been accused of having tinfoil hats for thinking there was fraud and she really won.
The best any of us can do, including Hillary, is be proven right over time and *hope* the leadership goes down for it.
A Powell endorsement is meaningless (to me).
McCain/Palin 2008
Powell is trying to absolve himself of his sins. He put on that dog & pony show at the UN re: WMD, and he said it was the biggest regret of his career, because he knew it was false. Now, he is going to the Messiah to be washed free of his sins. Another potential leader who sold his soul.
looking for integrity, you are so right. It should be a wake up call for all citizens when someone like Joe the Plumber is attacked for addressing a candidate. He’s just an average guy, an ordinary citizen, and he is being pilloried for doing the unthinkable: questioning Obama. One can only imagine how bad it will get if he becomes President.
Who would respond to Powell’s endorsement of Obama? To me it would be the same as if Bush endorsed Obama.
Sarah Palin is going to be on SNL! Josh Brolin is the host.

bostonboomer, middle names are verboten, doncha know? Just typing the word “H-U-S-S-E-I-N” will get you thrown into moderation and before you know it the men in bl@ck are at your door. Stop being such a darn, r@cist!
The NY Times came out with this article on Joe the Plumber, which could not have been smarmier, or more needlessly vile toward an ordinary citizen whose only sin was to ask Obama a question that led Obama into a major gaffe.
What does the article cover as newsworthy?
Why all the usual “debunking” of Joe the Plumber. His first name isn’t really Joe — that’s his middle name!! He doesn’t have a plumbing license, though he works in the plumbing business!!! He owes back taxes!!!!
I mean, this is news? No, this is smear. Who doesn’t know someone who has chosen to go by his middle name? Did Joe ever say that he was a licensed plumber? Did he choose to call himself “Joe the Plumber”? And the fact that, as an ordinary citizen, he owes back taxes, is relevant how?
Every last one of these “news items” has exactly one purpose: to smear an ordinary citizen on any basis they can drum up.
But of course the article can’t end there. It makes sure that it gets in the final, vicious stab of the dagger. It ends by quoting him on calling Obama a “tap dancer” like Sammy Davis Jr. Because the single most important thing that the NY Times want you to think about when you think about Joe the Plumber is that he is a racist. That MUST be your last impression of him, however stretched the accusation might be, and however irrelevant it might be to the tax issues he has raised.
I can only say that the NY Times has come simply to disgust me. Like their chosen candidate, they are full of PC moral superiority and a pretend self righteousness about the “tone” of the election and of our discourse when it suits their purpose.
But when it suits their purpose to engage in the most unfair, ungrounded, and distorted character assassination, they can’t be less eager to indulge it.
There is reason that some on the left are regarded as the worst phonies and hypocrites in American society. The NY Times offers up its perfect examples.
They are detestable.
Oops, I meant,
they couldn’t be more eager to indulge it.

She fought. She lost long before Denver.
She did. When Obama was annonced as the nominee on June 3rd, there were still many undecided superdelegates. If just a number of them the next day decided to endorse Hillary that would have helped her. But sadly everyone has been a coward in this election season. Everyone is afraid to speakout against Obama.
God, if Colin Powell endorses Obie now I really will feel like I’m going through the primary all over again. What else did they pull at the last minute? The constant calls that Hillary was going to concede even as polling was still going on. They’ll probably start hinting that John McCain is going to concede or is having a health crisis or some such rubbish.
. It should be a wake up call for all citizens when someone like Joe the Plumber is attacked for addressing a candidate.
It’s one of the most chilling things I’ve seen in this campaign so far.
I’m an immigrant, and when I was growing up, we had a dictator president who was elected into office. There were only a few newspapers and they only printed positive things about the president. One of the things I learned from watching grown-ups was that if I wanted to ask or say something negative about the president. I’d have to lower my voice and make sure no one overheard. I was too young to know how that started, I only knew that was the norm.
britgirl,
I would not worry to much about Powell he has lost the respect of everyone for going along with the Bush administration. His endorsement is not worth anything.
votermom,
Don’t worry this will be over soon enough. Obama will never get elected. The polls will start moving in McCain’s direction. The people who voted for Bush in 2004 will not vote for Obama and with so many Democrats not voting for him. There is no way he can take the POTUS. So just relax and make sure you vote on Nov 4th. It is all about turnout.
But maybe Joe the Plumber is the juncture at which the people say enough!! and show it with their vote.
I’m in Texas. Remember how Hillary won the primary, but Obama won the caucus?
Our Houston Chronicle reports —after studying the records—-that 4,000 DEAD PEOPLE had been registered and signed in to the caucuses, and then cast votes for Barak Obama.
4,000 dead people.
I know, I know, I said I was getting ready for work, but then I drift into something else and….!!
Anyway, just saw this (and all polls with grain of salt of course):
new AP/YAHOO poll: Obama 44, McCain 42.
Hold onto your hats. Suddenly, all the pollsters, seeking credibility as the election nears, are tightening up their samples. Gee, where have we seen this movie before?
Palin on Fox now (OH).
John Smith, I’ve got my fingers crossed that McCain will pull it out.

whew I guess not
Obviously you’re a r@cist for saying the men are dressed in black.
/end sarcasm
Mary, 4000? Well, now I’m pissed off again.
Off to class so that I can sit there and be pissed the entire time.
mary–I’m on the Houston Chronicle site. Do you have the name of the story that reports about the 4000 dead people at the caucus? I have friends who do not believe there was any caucus fraud. I’d love to email them the story.
Sarah Palin nailin’ it on FOX right now in Ohio:
Saying the public needs answers about ACORN, which is not negative campaigning — it’s that the electorate has a right to know who is running.
She’s being very direct.
You don’t want to turn the Buckeye state into the ACORN state!!!
Palin is a pistol!
She’s really taking it to Obama and ACORN. She’s also effectively saying, “asking about these association is not negative campaigning, it is in fairness to the electorate who has a right to know the truth before election day.”
Then, she & JM call for release of all communications between the Obama campaign and ACORN before the election.
Transparency anyone?
Voter Fraud-
There is a video on JustSayNoDeal about a case of voter fraud with the assisted voters…
Actually I don’t think it will be seen well if Powell endorses Obama. Partly because of the race issue.
It would be shocking though, if he endorsed McCain.
New post up!!!
wow, earth shattering news! Who could have seen this coming…just heard he Wash. Post endorsed obama…didn’t they endorse him on day one? Next thing they will be telling us is that keith oldbumsman is a secret obama supporter!
If that is true then the people who participated should be ashamed and also feel guilty for what they have done. Since this is a caucus and people have to show up and sign in, this means that people from other states must have been driven to the caucuses. 4000 people is a lot. Someone has to talk. Human beings are like that. Someone somewhere is going to share their participation in the caucus fraud either because of guilt or to show off.
votermom,
Check this out. Joe must have hit the right button.

Happy Birthday, Honora!
I loved McCain’s roast speech, and IIRC, isn’t Jackie Mason a Republican? I could see him polishing off a few good one-liners for McCain.
Mary – is anyone else picking up the story?
Oooh, BB, I feel a song coming on, based on your use of the word “clampdown” up above — Thank you! I’m digging up the Clash.
Just heard on local TV here in DC that the Washington Post has endorsed Obama, saying that his supple (or was that subtle) intelligence makes it “possible” that he “might” make a great president. Also, the Post acknowledged that while they have long liked and respected John McCain, his running mate Sarah Palin just “isn’t ready to be president”.
I’m sure I didn’t get al the quotes 100%, but that is the gist of it.
Obama MIGHT make a great president, but Palin isn’t ready to be PRESIDENT, an office she isn’t even seeking.
More of the same. Assumptions and presumptions. This is absolutely sick.
Julie – yes, Jackie Mason is pro-McCain, but his best schticks reverberate with the sensibilities of his own impeccable Jewishness. And McCain didn’t go there. BTW, did you see Mason’s awesome blowback on little Sarah Silverman?
Here’s an article where Jackie Mason attacks Silverman’s Great Schlepp…
Here’s the video where Jackie smacks Sarah (and Obama).
Sarah Silverman is gross. I saw her one night on Craig Ferguson’s show and she was just … yuck! I can’t even repeat what she said. She’s not funny, she’s profane and mean-spirited.
BB, Letterman didn’t even give McCain a chance to speak last night. I have never seen Letterman be so rude, sarcastic and downright disrespectful to a guest.
Letterman spent 3 or 4 mintues ranting about catching Bin Laden but refused to acknowledge that Ayers is also a terrorist. I guess an unrepentant domestic terrorist who only killed a “few” people 40 yeaars ago is okay. I mean, his victims have been dead so long, who cares anyway, right?
