Majority of Americans see through press bias

You’ve got to hand it to American voters.  They REALLY don’t trust the press.  They also know that our mainstream media is totally in the tank for Obama.  From Rasmussen:

The belief that reporters are trying to help Barack Obama win the fall campaign has grown by five percentage points over the past month. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that 49% of voters believe most reporters will try to help Obama with their coverage, up from 44% a month ago.

Not only that, but very few seem to think the press is trying to promote a McCain candidacy.  And only about a quarter of voters think there is no bias at all:

Just 14% believe most reporters will try to help John McCain win, little changed from 13% a month ago. Just one voter in four (24%) believes that most reporters will try to offer unbiased coverage.

These numbers only get worse for Obama when you break them down along party lines.  As might be expected an overwhelming number of Republicans see biased media coverage.  They’ve been singing that tune for years.  What is bad for Obama is that large numbers of Independents also feel like the media is in the tank for Obama.  Even Democrats who think the press coverage of Obama is biased outnumber those who think they are biased towards McCain.

Twenty-seven percent (27%) (of Democrats) believe most reporters are trying to help Obama and 21% in Obama’s party think reporters are trying to help McCain. …As for unaffiliated voters, 50% see a pro-Obama bias and 21% see unbiased coverage. Just 12% of those not affiliated with either major party believe the reporters are trying to help McCain. (emphasis mine)

Slightly less than half (45%) believe that reporters would actually lie to protect a candidate they support, and 50% say that they are trying to make the economy seem worse than it really is (which woud presumably help an Obama candidacy).

There are other disturbing trends for the Obamaphiles (although you wouldn’t know it from the glowing press coverage–guess the people surveyed above aren’t as “low information” as the elitist OFB would have us beleive).  Obama continues to slip in the daily presidential tracking poll.  In fact he is at his lowest since Hillary dropped out.  I guess without her to kick around anymore, people are actually forced to take a closer look at him.  Obots have been telling us that Obama’s latest slide to the right is just his way of pandering to a broader electorate–he’s just a politician after all–but the polls indicate that’s not working out so well for him.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows Barack Obama attracting 42% of the vote while John McCain earns 41%. That’s the lowest level of support measured for Obama since he clinched the Democratic Presidential nomination on June 3.

Obama has never polled above 50%.  Not only that, people find Obama less likeable the more they get to know him.  His favorables have been dropping steadily, while McCains remain about the same.  Even more troubling is his favorable rating among Democrats:

McCain is currently supported by 86% of Republicans and holds a modest–four percentage point—lead among unaffiliated voters. Obama earns the vote from 77% of Democrats

Could that 23% be disaffected PUMAs?  It tends to match earlier polling suggesting about that number of Democrats will not support the presumptuous nominee.  That Obama is behind among independent voters should be a wake up call to SD’s that actually want to win the white house.  Not gonna happen without them.  It also shows that what Riverdaughter has said before, that “Republicans fall in line”, is essentially true.   Even though they are not completely satisfied with McCain, and given the alternative to vote for Bob Barr, close to 90% have fallen into place behind their candidate. Obama also trails McCain on just about every issue, including the economy, Iraq and national security.

The strategy of turning red states blue is also looking like a high risk gamble.  I think it would have been safer to try to win big prize states like Ohio and Florida, which Obama has essentially written off.  He thinks he’ll replace them with VA, NC, NM, and NV.  In all of these  states he is either behind or virtually tied—and given their historical tendencies I would certainly give the tie to McCain at this point in the race.

Finally, Obama would have us red-staters believe that he’s as American as apple pie, born, raised, er, um his grandparents were from Kansas.  I guess Kansans don’t take much stock in that, and I don’t think that even Sebelius can change his dismal poll numbers there:

:Republican presidential candidate John McCain leads Obama 52% to 32% in the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Kansas voters.

But Obama won the Kansas caucuses, didn’t he?  I’m so glad that they had such an influential role in our primary….

Oh and superdelegates, if you want proof that Clinton would be the better candidate, look no further than right here:

McCain fares better against Obama than he does against two other prominent Democrats. New York Senator Hillary Clinton leads McCain by eight points, 50% to 42%. Former Vice President Al Gore, the Democratic presidential nominee in 2000, leads McCain 50% to 43%.

Electorally she has a much better outlook than Obama as well.   She would easily take Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.  And even as he touts his “50 state strategy” I recall that in the last NC poll that included Hillary, she actually came closer to beating McCain than he did.  So c’mon Super D’s, stop listening to the media (they’re liars) and start listening to the American people–we’re the ones who’s votes you need.

***UPDATE*** The New York Times proves Americans are right about media bias: from Fox News:

The New York Times last week blocked an opinion piece submitted by John McCain to the newspaper shortly after it printed a piece by his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, McCain campaign officials confirmed to FOX News on Monday.

Obama’s piece detailed his plans for Iraq and Afghanistan. While McCain’s proposed piece also discussed Iraq, The Times told McCain’s advisers that it would not accept the op-ed in its current form because it did not offer new information. Obama’s speech previewed a series of speeches leading up to a highly publicized trip to war zones in the Middle East.

What a pathetic joke our press is.  First they were complicit in taking this country to war with Iraq, now they think they’re going to decide this election for us.  FAT CHANCE!!!!  I say Boycott the NYTimes!!!

  1. I’ve given up on the media. Just get my world news from the BBC and politics info from whatever honest source I can find.

The turning point for me in realizing the massive media bias was watching Olberman and Mathews with such pained looks on their faces as Hillary kicked butt in Florida. I thought “what on earth is wrong with these guys?” Then I went straight to the Florida Dept. of State to see the elections come in live. They had 40% total turnout of (Dem & Rep) of registered voters. 4 million people!!! So motivated!

  2. BIAS??? WHAT BIAS????

I’m surprised there hasn’t been more shrieking over the 2012 domain name buy by Clinton more…of course, everyone’s too busy watching Obama on his road trip…

Sooner or later though, you’ll hear some of the cries coming from them and the media, as I mention in this post:

In which I also comment about how the media will manipulate anything she chooses to do at this point…

  3. Gary – I’m so glad you posted this. I think we’re onto the media, considering how poorly they’ve reported on teh Deciderer and his evildoing over the past seven years.

Americans are a lot smarter than the DNC thinks they are. Sorry, Donna and Howie, NO SALE.

  5. britgirls….I listen to the BBC World Service via shortwave and, boy, has that changed since Blair put the screws to them after the Kelly incident. (As in cut their budget forcing them to do less reporting from the field and using more of the audio from TV and documentaries produced by outside outfits.

I noticed they began loading their show “Talking Points” with Bush apologists most of the time.

The reception is bad now because it’s summer, so I don’t know what they’re doing at the moment. And I got so fed up that I stopped listening to Talking Points months ago…

  6. what I think is so telling is that by their reporting you’d think Obama was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and that everyone in the world just LOVES him. Even we have kind of bought into the “he’s the fad of the month” thing, when polling just does not bear that out. He can’t even get out of the low 40’s….and his popularity is sinking like a rock.

  7. Rumors Of Obama’s VP No Women Allowed?

Look for Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) to be soon added to the public short list of names Sen. Barack Obama is considering to be his running mate.

First Read makes the case: “The Rhode Island senator, who is on the overseas trip with Obama, has been to Iraq 11 times (and voted against the original Iraq war resolution)… The widely respected voice on national security is a 1971 West Point grad, though he did not fight in Vietnam. The Army Ranger paratrooper, who eventually commanded the 82nd Airborne, was assigned elsewhere… Father was a school custodian and WWII vet… Was on a trip to Afghanistan with McCain and Lieberman when he first met his wife… Took weekly art classes at the age of 5 at the Rhode Island School of Design… Big Will Ferrell fan and drives a 1991 Ford Escort… Differing with Obama, he was against the 1991 Gulf War and voted against the recent compromise FISA legislation.”

  8. Za–your repetitve comments are abusive you are not welcome to post here.

  9. Za Warudo, in what dimension does June have 31 days?

  10. Fred – Jack Reed is an excellent choice to booster Obama’s FP creds and his lefty creds.

That’s exactly why it won’t happen.

In my opinion, Obama is in love with the adulation of the Village . There’s nothing they love more than fake bipartisanship.

Obama will pick Chuck Hagel to please them.

He is going down in flames.

  11. madamab: Exactly. This is all about the Village and fake bipartisanahip.

The lefto-sphere has been suckered in. They can carry around their AT&T tote bags from now until the end of time as a constant reminder that they have been bought and paid for.

    Sickening.

  12. I wonder if the AT&T totebags have little listening devices implanted in them. I sure as hell wouldn’t take one…..

  15. From the publisher of the New Hampshire Union Leader:

The blatant bias of the major national news media toward Barack Obama is now so overwhelming that it would not be worth noting, except that the election of a President of the United States is involved. It is a propaganda blitz that would make the Kremlin blush.

    [more}

    http://www.unionleader.com/article.aspx?headline=Obama+orgy&articleId=c59bf7fa-c458-40aa-819d-efd11aa13974

  16. CB: Citing the Union Leader is no way to win an argument among Democrats, however nominal their affiliation.

  17. Rich, what sources now are a way to win an argument among Democrats? No particular paper, as far as I’m concerned. They proved themselves a biased group of hacks.

  18. OT; But I had to share the email i just opened. I’ve always thought Obama was the iPhone candidate, and now I can win one…

    Dear ,

Enter our contest and help us elect Obama for President. You could win an iPhone!

If ever there was a reason to back a candidate this must be the best!

  19. ROTFLOL about that cartoon.

  20. The media will gloss over anything anti-Obama. If they can spin it, they will….waiting for the next shoe to drop doesn’t matter anymore. November is all that counts now.

  21. gary, great article.btw what paper or other source did the cartoon come from?

  22. Last week I was sitting in the waiting room of a doctor’s office with about 10 other people. Some were thumbing through magazines, one guy was playing with his cell phone and Fox news was on the tv overhead. The newscaster
said, “Is John McCain getting equal coverage in the media?” Every single person mumbled “no” under their breath, even the ones who didn’t seem to be paying attention to the tv. Collectively, it was audible and loud. We all just looked at each other and smiled.

  23. Rich,

I assumed the New Hampshire publisher was a Republican,
but what he is saying appears to be the truth. The five corporations
that own the TV stations love Obama. For example, General Electric (NBC, MSNBC–
with Microsoft), and Telemundo has General Electric financials,
nuclear power, and media ad sales betting on the Precious.

  24. I’m betting that if Obama is the nominee that he will lose the general election. More from Rasmussen:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows Barack Obama attracting 42% of the vote while John McCain earns 41%. That’s the lowest level of support measured for Obama since he clinched the Democratic Presidential nomination on June 3. Obama’s support peaked at 48% with data released on June 8, 9, and 10. During that same time frame, McCain’s support has remained steady in the 40% to 42% range (he’s had just one day a point below that range and two days a point above it).

When “leaners” are included, it’s Obama 46% and McCain 45%. With leaners, Obama reached 50% support in mid-June and was at 48% or 49% every day from June 13 until July 10. Since then, he has reached the 48% level just once while polling consistently at 46% or 47%

  25. madamab, are you going to the PUMA conf in DC?

  27. garychapelhill; Awesome job and the super d’s had better start paying attention.

  28. Hey Mawm – I am not sure. I am very seriously considering it, let’s just say that…and I should have a place to stay, which would cut the cost for me.

It’s hard work being unemployed! :-)

  29. fuzzybear home again for a quick lunch – gary thanks for the great news the above is further proof that unless the party leadership want to go kamakazi in November then they better dump this loser for Hillary Clinton.

If they do not I am confident that Obama will not be the next president and it will be the SD’s Dean and Pelosi’s fault-and Obama himself. I think that these folks are tratiors to the core democratic and progressive values that most of america espouses.

They cannot blame Hillary they cannot blame Bill and they cannot blame us for exersizing our right to vote as our conscience dictates. Look in the mirror DNC and thats who you have to blame for this fiasco.

The sad part is this was all avoidable but when you fix a race its hard to change horses in the middle after the betting windows are closed without admitting you fixed the thing in the first place.

The Rainbow tour will only further america’s discust in this little man who is totally unprepaired to lead this nation.

  30. OT, but I am having a crap day. I wanted to buy this dress at jcrew.com but their site is effed up lately and by the time I got it working they had run out of my size. :(

  31. Sorry masslib! Stoopid jcrew. Nothing they have fits me anyway because I am short – er, heightically-challenged. :-)

Fuzzy – WORD! I agree with everything you said.

  32. In a democratic year the presumptive nominee cannot have poll numbers like he currently has. He has had nothing but positive press and his poll numbers are not moving to think that disaffected democrats will come home is naive thinking. Given McCain reputation among centrist and conservative democrats as well as his history of independence from his party his is a very attractive candidate to alot of democrats. There were a great deal of people within the democratic party who were excited in 2004 at the prospect of McCain as Kerry’s running mate. By the fall the Republican will smell blood in the air and come out in large numbers to support their candidates and as the light shines brighter on Obama many Democrats will be turned off by their party. Given the low approval ratings for congress I fear the Democrats will have a wake up call in November that will be too late. The last poll numbers I saw an attractive candidate like Al Franken was losing to Coleman that does not bode well.

  33. People,

If you havent already seen this:
Hillary: Sexism or Self-Sabotage? – Shoshana Zuboff
    http://www.businessweek.com/managing/content/jun2008/ca20080619_964285.htm?campaign_id=rss_daily

I wrote a long, long email to the lovely Shoshana letting her know what I think of her article. Amongst other things, I mentioned that maybe Hillary Clinton is a lady who wears pantsuits not because she wants to look like a man, but because she’s comfortable in her pantsuits. This Zuboff lady apparently once said “activities that seem to represent choices are often inert reproductions of accepted practice”. Funny how she’s forgotten that herself.

Do stop by at her article and let her know what you think.

  34. I hope Jack Reed is not his VP choice; I thought Jack said no..as did Strickland, Rendell, Webb and General Jones.

General Jones ended up going for McCain.

  35. I think Obama’s biggest problem is he doesn’t realize the General Election is NOT one big caucus.

    wahwah…

  36. check out the update….the NY times refused to publish an op ed on iraq by mccain, while printing Obama’s piece on the eve of his “world tour”

jennifer, I didn’t use the cartoon as support for my post, it is merely a humorous aside, and one that I think is spot on. I frankly don’t care about his other work, and you brining it up just serves to distract from the real issues…

  37. madamab, on July 21st, 2008 at 2:15 pm Said:
Sorry masslib! Stoopid jcrew. Nothing they have fits me anyway because I am short – er, heightically-challenged.

Me too. It was a petite. They just did it to me again! Second time in one hour. Bastards!

  38. Obama believes his own propaganda. No need to count votes, he is already President – and will remain so for 8-10 years. LOL

    What an absolute idiot.

  39. BO won the Kansas caucuses alright.I was at the largest one.A Ks. democratic operative herded the HC supporters to one side of the auditorium and the BO supporters to the otherside. He then asked the republicans to stand up to be applauded. Guess what over 60% of the BO supporters were just that. Not one HC supporter stood up. In addition, the caucus took over 3 and a half hours to conclude. Btw there was a horrible ice storm that night.

  40. Lauraks – The Kansas Democratic caucus member I know said that she believes she has PTSD from that experience. At her location, 2000 “new” voters came out, needing to be registered. She says they were almost all Republicans.

Yep, this was a “fair and balanced” primary. Puh-leez.

  41. I don’t know why everyone says the economy issue favors BO. He’s never said anything that gave me the slightest impression that he knows how to deal with it. In fact, all he does is shoot down others ideas until he sees them working and then adopts them as his own. He’s like a cheating schoolboy.

  42. Good article, Gary. And I’m really glad to see that polling supports what I’ve long thought – that the press has been so far over the top this election cycle that the public has stopped listening to them. In fact, I think it’s worse than that. They have pushed Obama so relentlessly that large numbers of Americans are sick to death hearing about him. I know I’m not the only one who mutes the sound or changes the channel when Obama comes on.

After the 3 network news programs announced that their anchors would be going along with Obama on his trip, I sent them each an email congratulating them on confirming to me that they are now nothing more than propagandists. I think this is one of the more outrageous things they’ve done this year. Craziness has been going on with the cable stations all year, but the network news has been a little bit more subtle about it. This move really called them out, and will hopefully backfire big time.

I agree that McCain is getting very little coverage at all. But I’ve actually watched a couple of his town hall meetings on CSpan. I was shocked to hear him talking to a group of auto workers in Michigan last night. He was passionately talking about alternative energy, enivronmental issues, and ways to solve the gas crisis. I have yet to hear any policy from Obama that compares. It was definitely shocking to hear a Republican talk about these issues and blame his own party for the problems. If this kind of stuff were constantly on the major news networks, I think McCain’s polling numbers would be creeping up. This is just one more reason why Hillary is the only dem who could win in November.

  43. Americans are starting to realize that the same press that sold us George Bush and the Iraq War is now working overtime to sell us Barack Obama. No thank you, MSM.

  44. garychapelhill, just watched Fox and CNN at 1:30 pm CDT. Their lead story was that the McCain op-ed piece was turned down because it did not have a scheduled time for troops withdrawals from Iraq like Obama’s had. McCain’s press director was interviewed. She said McCain had never set timetables, and never will, because decisions in a war have to be made according to conditions on the ground, not as Obama has done, just to get votes. At one point the interviewer flat out said that the NYT was trying to force the direction and design of foreign policy.

The media director for McCain also said that over 250 newspapers had contacted the campaign with offers to run the op-ed piece.

Very interesting discussions. Both channels showed awareness of the NYT bias, and were willing to talk about it.

  45. Marla – didn’t McCain pledge to withdraw all American troops by 2013? Is he flip-flopping on that now?

Either way, I think it is ridiculous for us to have to guess what McCain’s plan is for Iraq. We are supposed to be able to make informed decisions here.

They really have jumped the shark with this crap.

  46. o.k. – more stuff regarding Hillary’s debt – not so much on the amount – but other ‘type’ info..

Clinton’s Debt Reveals Flaws in Campaign Finance Laws

    http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/07/clintons-debt-reveals-flaws-in-campaign.html

  47. Oh, they also said that Obama is part of a congressional trip overseas and that he’s doing his best not to look like he is campaigning. Yet, the media is featuring his visits/talks with foreign leaders and not what his colleagues are doing. He also has refused to make comments on his plan for Iraq now that he’s met with field commanders.

If this is truly a congressional trip, that means the taxpayers are paying for this trip. I want my money back, NOW!

BTW, the Barack Obama Official Travel Briefing packet someone had mentioned a couple of days ago is an eye-opener. Worth checking out. I found it at http://iusatoday.net/news/mmemmottpdf/mccain-obama-travel-pack-7-18-2008. If I typed this incorrectly, just Google Obama Travel Pack and dozens of references will tumble out.

    PUMA

  48. Americans need to start getting serious about stopping obama; .

  49. I just got fired. I’m not sorry about it, all together. Still it’s upsetting.

    PUMA!

  50. Another “trash Hillary” piece masquerading as info.

Politicians go into debt in campaigns all the time, and other politicians help them to pay it down.

I remember the Clintons helping John Glenn with his debts from sometime in the 1980s.

  51. Arabella Trefoil, that’s awful! I’m sorry.

  52. Arabella, Oh no. What happened?

  53. Boycott the Times? I did that months ago, the day after that awful editorial blaming Hillary for the negativity in the campaign. [Ha!] Cancelled my subscription and they”re trying to get me back. [Ha! again]

  54. Arabella – I’m sorry! I guess this was part of the “perfect storm” you mentioned. :-(

    What happened?

  55. I love the cartoon – finally the MSM is getting heat for their Obama worship.

PUMAs are taking that mask off – we can’t give up now!

  56. Mawm – I worked in the financial industry, which is a pretty uncomfotable place to be lately. The company had problems and needed to let some people go. I have been really unhappy there for the last six months.

Still, a job’s a job. Luckily, I don’t make a lot of money so I should be able to fine something else. I just don’t want to rush into anything without thinking about it.

  57. Sheeesh .. getting fired on a Monday sux .. :( something better is waiting for you … !

plural – I am sorry you took it that way .. I missed the trashing Hillary part .. maybe I am getting immune to it by now .. to me it was just information period ..

trust me on this ! I would be the last one to post anything ‘trashing’ Hillary .. I’m guessing you & I were focusing on different things .. Sorry to you & anyone else who got your mistaken impression . ..

  58. madamab – Yeah, it was quite a storm. Lots of back stabbing involved, which is never pleasant. At least I saw it coming.

    sigh

  59. Arabella, where r u located?

  60. I live in White Plains, NY.

  61. Arabella, My prayers go out to you. I know how stressful losing your job can be. Do you have family and friends you can rely on?

  62. Sorry Arabella! I’m looking for a job too. Definitely, if you can afford to take your time, do it. It’s not worth jumping into a bad situation.

  63. Briana, I’m sorry. It started out to be informational, but then the parts about making it illegal for a campaign to go into debt just seemed to me to be aimed at making Hillary look bad. More of the “anything a Clinton does must be a scandal” theme.

Maybe I’m over-sensitive about it. I’m still very angry about how she was treated — is being treated, still.

  64. Mawm – Yes, I have a wonderful husband, family and friends – lots of support.

Plus we are debt-free and have always been savers. I can afford to not work for a while. Too bad I can’t retire just yet.

  65. Wow! NYT refused McCain’s editorial? Because B0’s platitudes were shinier? They won’t let us have an election, will they?

  66. Arabella, I’m so sorry to hear about that financial institution doing you wrong – they seem to have a habit of that. I spent 30 years in a financial institution – and it was really like an institution! Back stabbing was business as usual. I wish you all the best!

  67. A BIG GROUP HUG FOR ARABELLA!!!!

  68. Thanks, guys!

  69. From what I have heard the financial industry is about the most sexist industry in the US. I had a friend in SF who was working on her series 7. She quit the industry and went to work in health care, because she was so disgusted with the frat-boy culture.

  70. Mawm – Yes, the frat boy stuff is quite prevalent in the financial industry. The main person who went after me was a Keith Olberman clone. You can see why I’m not really sad to be out of it.

  71. From everyone who works hard and never gives up, this one is for Arabella!

  72. Arabella – I know exactly what you’re going through. I was working in the financial industry too. They terminated my contract early and didn’t even have the courtesy to tell me – I had to push and push to find out what was going on!

    Big hugs to you.

  73. Arabella, I’m very sorry to hear your news. You’re a great mood lifter for us. Hope we can do that for you, too!

  74. I never thought that as a democrat (former), my (former) party would nominate one of the least qualified candidates in history. How does it feel that the so called progressive candidate is the one thats all fluff and no substance, while the republican is infinitely more qualified (in terms of experience) and lite on the rhetoric? The world is officially upside down. I always thought that democrats were the ones who were right and competent but not particularly good at politics, a situation I could live with; expecting dissapointment every 4 years. Bill Clinton was an exception, a democrat good at politics and policy. And certainly Hillary, if given her earned chance, would prove to be more than competent in both policy and politics…
However I refuse to be apart of a party, led by a light-weight who can make a speech, who is completely unproven and untested. What a shame!!!

  75. For more on Barack check out Bonnie Erbe’s most recent article on “Obama’s Fundraising Hypocrisy”

    http://www.usnews.com/blogs/erbe/2008/7/21/barack-obamas-fundraising-hypocrisy–a-lobbyist-by-any-other-name.html

  76. You know, it’s amazing how quickly one can learn helplessness. I was not happy at my job for a long time. Instead of saying “To heck with this nonsense!” and leaving my job, I stayed on and just felt more and more inadequate.

Same thing with politics. If it weren’t for the PUMA community, I would be meekly accepting an infererior candidate. Just goes to show the importance of community.

This year has been horrible for many reasons. The Left blogoshpere made me feel unwelcome when with their Clinton Derangement System. Places where I first found my political voice (atrios, eg.) became cess pools. I wondered what was wrong.

It wasn’t until the great kos strike that I realized there were other people out there who thought like I did. There were new places to go and new people to meet on the blogosphere. Riverdaughter saved my life by creating the confluence. Every post she had written has rung true.

Why should we accept defeat at the hands of a second rate candidate. To heck with this!

    PUMA!

  77. I boycotted the NYT after the whole Jayson Blair fiasco. however, I still occasionally read the Weddings and Celebration section and/or movie reviews.

  78. I still like the puzzles. Other than that, the NYT is a waste of time.

    pUMA

  79. BBC world used to be ok- but it was so anti-Clinton during the Primaries that I turned it off and wrote to them complaining of bias.
I turned it on today ready to writhe at its coverage of BO in Iraq, but it wasn’t too bad-concluding with something about local people not trusting campaign promises.

  80. I don’t listen to the news, watch the news or read the news. I get everything from places like this.

  81. modo was a huge factor for me turning off on the nyt . .

when you look at her history of trashing all dems and then look at her disgusting ‘garbage’ during the primaries – .. talk about trashing Hillary , honestly if I had ever met up with her .. I may have ended up slapping her !

I google Paul Krugman tho .. & then peek at the 10 most viewed .. can’t help myself .. lol -

  82. modo was a huge factor in making me give up on the NYT. She has been over the top misogynisitic for ages. I can’t beleive how long it took for me to see what a “mean girl” she is.

  83. Gary,

Excellent post! I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner. I was busy writing a long historical piece that I just put up. I’d love to get your reactions. BTW, that cartoon is hilarious. Someone needs to send that to Olberman, Matthews, and David Shuster.

  84. Hi Arabela, sorry to hear about work. You are such a valuable member of this community and I am always happy to see your witty comments.

  85. Just saw on tv that Dobson is coming around to McCain … guess even republican fundies are stepping back into the line

  86. Gary, that cartoon really had me laughing out loud!

  87. Gary, great post as always, but I have to say, that is one GREAT cartoon.

  88. It’s about time the press admitted the press bias and the American people see it.

    Love the cartoon!

  89. Chavalier, thanks for the heads up about that ludicrous article in Business Week. I cannot believe that Shoshana Luboff actually says Hillary neglected the female vote. Or that she calls the media sexism “alleged”. I suggested she watch this great Daily Show video to educate herself:

  90. BernieO, on July 21st, 2008 at 6:49 pm Said:

That is bullshit. Hillary reached out to women and this was before IOWA or Supertuesday. What does she call Hillary at a meeting with women in the cosmetics industry in IOWA. There were more than 100 people. The room was full of women and there were many African Americans. Hillary was there to meet these women because of the belief that they talked to other women in their shops.

I have had this argument before and I just don’t agree that she didn’t reach out to women. For me to believe that I would have to pretend that I didn’t see any of it.

  91. I used to work for them Gary — out here in CA. Well, they really pulled a fast one on McCain today my friend. They didn’t run his op-ed on this war situation. VERY BAD. Because this shows an ugly censoring underbelly right now, after the press smashed down Hillary.

CNN has that op-ed up, links at my place. Also, since RD mentioned Zimbabwe, yeah. Maybe there is more going on than meets the eye.

  92. Hillary said this in her speech after the last primary:

Finally, I am in this race because I believe staying in this race will help unite the Democratic Party. I believe that if Senator Obama and I both make our case – and all Democrats have the chance to make their voices heard – everyone will be more likely to rally around the nominee.

She warned them but they did not listen.

  95. madamab- hi, I just got back. McCain’s rep said he was still homing in on having the troops out by 2013, and that it was possible. The NYT was forcing him to come up with a schedule like Obama had done in his op-ed piece. My comment had more to do with the media siding with Obama than the actual information in the interview.

Arabella- you have the power–you’ve just been freed to be available for new experiences and actions. I’m glad you’re taking your time. Nurture yourself –you’ll need to be rested when new events come your way. I’m cheering for you.

  96. I got put into moderation today on the Taylor Marsh website for posting the link to the Noquarterusa.net blog’s Obama birth certificate thread. I also asked “why is it so difficult to present an authentic birth certificate. What is Obama trying to hide?” Now my comments can’t be posted on the site. Taylor then wrote that I have been put in moderation for the “umpteenth” time. That was a lie. This is my second time in moderation. The first time lasted about 3 weeks. Taylor Marsh should be ashamed when she plays the type of games that the Obama campaign perpetrates on the public… stifle dissent, and distort the truth.
The gentleman who indicated that the birth certificate is fraudulent is an EXPERT, but that doesn’t seem to matter to people like Taylor who are hell-bent on getting Obama, the faux Democrat, elected president. Well Taylor, not now, not ever! I don’t reward slime with my vote.

  97. Just discovered this website today, thanks to the NYT article with the link. SO GLAD I found you guys! Have been depressed since early June about Hilllary and looked for a community and couldn’t find one but now I’ll be checking in here every day.

I can’t stand Obama and am grossed out by the cult of personality that surrounds him…including his lackeys, the press. I’ve been a lifelong democrat and voted without enthusiasm (before and since Bill Clinton) for all their lousy Pres. candidates…but not this time. Just changed my affiliation to independent–that felt GOOD–and will write in Hillary in November. But must check out how I can do that in NJ, with the electronic voting booths…anyone have advice on how I should proceeed?

So disappointing not to be able to like or support the first black presidential candidate, and let’s face it, he’s only there because he’s black and played the race card. I see him on a continuum….Clarence Thomas, OJ SImpson, Barack Obama.

  98. Thanks for that cartoon. Is that K.O. on the table there? Or Tweety?

Just as an aside… I was “removed” from Dirty Underpants Forum (where they talk of change, but never do) for accusing the MSM of having erections for Obama.

It’s nice to know… I’m not alone in my observations!!

  99. great article-garychapelhill-yesterday, in your note about having a problem in getting your comments posted on CNN and MSNBC. They seem to have key words that are either grouped or single that send you to moderation, never again to see the light of day. Words that are critical of Obama supporters, race, black, sometimes just CNN, Cafferty. Rezko, Wright, Ayers, etc. The comments must be gemane to the subject title. I always make sure I have something to say to the subject and through that entry attempt to get the message in that I am trying to make.Every message should point out that Obama is a “serial Flip flopper” and can not win the general election and Democrats if they want to win in November, they must nominate Hillary Clinton.

  102. fuck off nearlynutless…

  103. Even McCain–the candidate most accustomed to winning adoration from the media with semi-coherent “straight talk”–has to be shocked by attention Obama is getting, though it’s tough to feel sorry for him when he has so often been the beneficiary of media bias.

One warning for the networks, though: Part of the reason the Democratic primary race lasted as long as it did probably was because many people who otherwise would not have been Clinton fans grew disgusted with how poorly the news media treated her while fawning over Obama. In coming weeks, McCain may benefit from the same kind of backlash.

  104. These responses are great.

The media was, is, and will always be biased. I simply don’t understand how people have yet to wrap their minds philosophically around the idea that taking in an experience, recognizing what it was, and then reporting on it to another person already entails 3 different levels of manipulation! Now I’m not saying that how the media is behaving is somehow subconscious motivation on their part; I’m simply saying this: why weren’t you up in arms when the media refused to put together any credible reporting on the Iraq war in its beginning days? Were they simply ignorant of the truckloads (literally!) of money we were losing there?

It’s astounding. The Republicans, no matter how many years of favor they enjoy, will always know how to paint themselves as the victim. I, for one, am in favor of this coverage of Obama, so long as it isn’t some sort of reverse fake by the media to actually make him look worse.

  105. anewnadir said:

why weren’t you up in arms when the media refused to put together any credible reporting on the Iraq war in its beginning days?

um, most of us were, that’s why we are outraged that they’re trying to pull the same shit with Obama. and we’re outraged that people who should know better are going with the flow because this tiime it is their candidate. that’s called hypocrisy.

  106. There is a general election to win and a nation to save from 4 more years of Bush. Why are you people wasting energy spinning so?

If you don’t like the Democratic party primary rules (I don’t either) then work to change them.

Don’t ruin our country because your candidate didn’t win. That is unconscionable.

Anyone who would do that is a poser and was never, ever going to vote for any Democrat.

  107. Oh I know my post will last about 3 seconds. It’s all over the blogosphere that you people don’t tolerate any posts that are less than 100% rabid against Obama. I think they did that sort of thing in Nazi Germany too.

  108. The code for America is adolescence and it’s reflected in the way politics plays in this country. All political news is non-news here…no policy discussions…just kids calling each other names.
