Words Matter Senator Obama

“Don’t tell me words don’t matter. ‘I have a dream’ — just words? ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal’ — just words? ‘We have nothing to fear but fear itself’ — just words? Just speeches?”

                                     –Barack Obama (et al)

These are the inspiring words stolen, plagiarized, “riffed on” by Barack Obama from a speech given by Deval Patrick nearly a year earlier (God knows who actually wrote it).  It was a response to criticism by Sen. Clinton, among others, that there was no substance behind Sen. Obama’s flourishing rhetoric.  Never mind that his response totally misses the point.  Those words, spoken my MLK Jr, Thomas Jefferson, and FDR, were most definitely not just words, they were backed up by action.  All three men risked their lives, and the lives of their countrymen to back up those words.

No, Senator Obama, those were not “just words”.  They were acts of defiance against tyrants and oppressors.  I can’t imagine the audacity of anyone, let alone a do-nothing junior senator who has never had a full time job, to compare his words, much less himself to any of these giants.

But I do believe that Senator Obama does understand the importance of words.  The nuanced way in which language can be manipulated to mean whatever you want it to.   Especially when you want people to think you believe one thing now, but plant words that will enable you to take the opposite view later without being labeled a liar.  George Orwell had a name for it:

malreported - When the Times reports a fact which the government later deemed untrue. You see, the government is never “wrong”, the paper merely reported the facts incorrectly. This term was often used in describing newspaper articles that contained references to unpersons, unfulfilled economic projections, or altered government policies (emphasis mine)

Which brings me to Senator Obama’s latest speech on the Iraq war.  Obama has already proven himself to be a liar, but on this, his signature issue, he can’t afford to seem to be changing his stance on withdrawal. This is what he said just two months ago:

“When I promise that we are going to bring this war in Iraq to a close in 2009, I want the American people to understand that I opposed this war in 2002, 2003, ‘04, ‘05, ‘06 and ‘07, so you can have confidence that I will be serious about ending this war.” (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks At The North Carolina Democrat Party 2008 Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, Raleigh, NC, 5/2/08 )

I don’t believe, however, that he has any intention of sticking by his pledge to withdraw on ANY timetable.  In fact, I doubt that if Obama is elected his plan for Iraq will stray too much from what John McCain has been advocating.

And this is where the importance of words comes in.  Let’s take a look at a line from today’s speech by Senator Obama, as reported by Politico under the headline Obama says Iraq war must end” :

I will focus this strategy on five goals essential to making America safer: ending the war in Iraq responsibly; finishing the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban; securing all nuclear weapons and materials from terrorists and rogue states; achieving true energy security; and rebuilding our alliances to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

One word in that sentence is important.  One.  He says he will end the war responsibly. That single word gives him his out.  That word has the power to continue our presence in Iraq for another 100 years, as the press likes to attribute to Senator McCain.

Yes, words matter.  Especially when they’re used to cover your ass.  Obama knows that his promise to withdraw quickly from Iraq is a pipe dream.  He knows that if he sets a fixed time-table he’ll be pressured to stick to it.  We thought in 2006 that the newly elected Democratic congress would force a timetable on the Bush Administration. Didn’t happen.  What makes anyone think they’ll force one on an Obama administration?  Until the troops start coming home, his words are meaningless.  In fact, they don’t sound so different from these words:

“It makes no sense to tell the enemy when you plan to start withdrawing. All the terrorists would have to do is mark their calendars. … Setting a deadline for withdrawal is setting a date for failure, and that would be irresponsible,”

                                   —George W. Bush

  2. I simply don’t understand why more Obama supporters aren’t scratching their heads in confusion, i.e., “But didn’t he say that he was for ending the war quickly?” “But didn’t he say he was against the FISA bill?” “Wait a minute, I thought he said [insert any statement made by Obama wherein he asserts he is for or against something].” Obama may not be the smartest bulb in the box, but he was smart enough to get some very word-knowledgeable people for speech writers. They can gloss over anything that Obama says so that the people who believe Obama is the actual “second coming” can say, “Oh geez, I obviously misunderstood what he said.”

Unfortunately, all they are getting is garbage – just high-falutin’ garbage. It will be discovered by his awed supporters that Obama is not what they thought he was … I just hope he doesn’t get a chance to destroy the United States before they discover he is a charlatan.

  3. fuzzy comes home for lunch and reads gary’s wonderful post- george orwell in “1984″ had a newspeak word for what you are talking about it was called doublespeak and the process the masses used to assimulate the process was called doublethink.

Obama and his O-bots have raised this process to a high art form and it is scary. I feel the principles of Ingsoc breathing down all our backs…can anyone say Room 101.

    fuzzybeargville-home for a quick lunch

  4. as a matter of fact, with Barry O’s changing positions… I might even speculate that withdrawal might occur more rapidly in a McCain presidency if he is being pressured by a Democratic congress… because we know they won’t do anything but bend over for “the Precious)

  5. Great post, garychapelhill.

Obama reminds me of George Bush more and more every day.

Evidently Obama’s words only matter when it suits his political aspirations.

Obama’s newest strategy to win women’s vote is to push the equal pay meme….problem with that is he doesn’t pay his women staffers equal to the men staffers.

Yes, words matter but actions matter more. He talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk.

  6. Gary, the US is/are not leaving the Middle East any time soon….I do not understand D’s who think otherwise. Of course O, if president, is not going to change a thing.

  7. Great post as usual, Gary!

The reason Samantha Power was fired, supposedly, was not because she called HRC a “monster,” but because she let the cat out of the bag on Iraq and Obama: His 16-month plan was just a “best-case scenario.” He had absolutely no plans to stick to that timetable.

I did a post on Obama and Orwell about a week ago at my place, but I was thinking “Animal Farm.”

I find myself mind-melding with Conflucians so often it scares me a little. :-)

  8. OMG What a list, so casually thrown out and euphemistically called “foreign policy” instead of pandering. Letsee now. Making America safer. Safer than what? 9/11??? Oh yes by “ending the war in Iraq” and handing the country back to the crazies. That’ll help. Then there is finishing the fight against AL Qaeda. Tell me he actually knows where they are and that he is not actually going to bomb Pakistan right away. Please? As for the Taliban. Gonna take more than he is willing to do to deal with them. Speaking of alliances, has he never heard of NATO? They are the people who are carrying the fight in Afghanistan right now. Be nice if he kind of acknwledged that. Oh yes then there is securing all the nukes. What about the ones in Iran??? Gonna just go take them out?? Gonna tell Israel to go take them out? I think not. And what about the rest of the terrorist materials and whatnot. Just who is he gonna take them away from? North Korea, Russia, Pakistan, Iran? and the rest of the “rogue states? Oh and don’t forget securing a “true” energy security …what ’s he gonna do…just stop buying from the Saudis and those frightening Canadians while we put up more wind farms? That’ll bring down the price of gas. AND last but so not least. rebuilding our alliances. I can just hear it. “YO…Putin…baby we gotta talk.” Hmm come into the parlor my friend. What can I do for you my friend. “Yo, Putin, its about our alliance I wanna rebuild it” Yes indeed my friend. Angela, darling, bring Mr. Obama his lunch. Then there is Ahmadinejad. “Hey, Ahmad baby…my friend…we gotta talk.” No we do not. I have nukes so shut up. “Well at least give me a fist bump Ahmad.” Face it folks, He just does not have the chops to do the job. Hillary would have known how to handle foreign policy. Why? Because Hillary has not only the experience (she actually knows most of these leaders), she would have had the resolve to back up everything she said. Hillary would have said what she meant…once and meant what she said. Obama is just all talk…an empty suit calling his list foreign policy. Am I gonna have to vote for whathisname. McCain?

  9. The key to Obama is always look for the get out of jail free card. The word he can back track on. The double meaning. The W. O. R. M. The ….etc…..etc.

  12. I sick of him *speechifying* his way through this entire campaign season. Apparently, he’s not to be held responsible for anything he’s said or done in the past — recent or distant. What’s even more asinine, is watching the MSM sit back and remain complicit in this sham. SMDH.

  15. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. I have made it my personal mission to bring up this last sickening flip of BO’s to every single one of my clients. Here it comes, people. Now it’ll be the Afghanis turn. Hey-nabbed a Republican woman today who stated she wouldn’t be voting for McCain for exactly the same reasons we’re not voting for BO. I hailed her as a PUMA sister. She had no idea what I was talking about, so I sent her here first. She said her entire family, Republican AND Democrats were all fed up with their respective candidates, and were not going to vote at all this GE. Just home for lunch, gotta go back to work and keep spreading the word.

  16. Kudos to Bridgette, over at NOQuarter, for this gem:

“Do you know the difference between Barack Obama and Miley Cyrus?

One tours the country singing empty versus to teenage fans, the other is a pop singer.”

Thanks, Bridgette! I needed that. LOL!

  17. Irlandese – The two Parties have managed to nominate candidates that are unacceptable to their bases.

No wonder no one is excited about the election any more.

Now, if it were Hillary v. Huckabee, well! We’d have some fireworks, wouldn’t we?! LOL

  18. I’m starting to think that McCain doesn’t really want to be President he was just planning to “take one for the team” and be token opposition to the Democrats this year (kinda like Bob Dole did in 1996)

In 1992 the Democrats figured nobody could beat Poppy Bush so they let some redneck governor be the nominee while the party big shots set their sights 4 years down the road.

  19. myiq – that’s what my husband was saying.

Don’t let him lull you. McCain is just treading water until after the Convention. No one is paying attention now anyway.

  20. I think Obama doesn’t really want to be president, but the media won’t , end this farse.

  21. Obama has made enough mistake to end anybodys chances. But the media won’t end it.

  22. I’m a year older than Obama and just about as well qualified (we’re both lawyers)

If I were on the verge of becoming the Democratic nominee I would be yelling “Are you people crazy? You don’t want me, you want somebody who knows what they’re doing!”

I’d be a post turtle too

  23. I think McCain will suddenly fall ill right before the Republican Convention and they will bring out a totally unexpected candidate to take his place.

According to the republican rules, the “presumptive” nominee is just that, “presumptive” and they can decide at the last minute to choose someone else.

Knowing how the republicans play the political game, especially in a year where they should lose by a huge margin, I wouldn’t be surprised if McCain does not end up the nominee.

The unfortunate part is that the democratic nominee is chosen before the republican convention, which gives them the opportunity to change horses in mid-stream and totally take the dems by surprise (no surprise there!).

That’s why it’s important that we push the super D’s to chose Hillary. Obama is going to go down in the flames of scandal that have been perculating for months.

The biggest surprise the dems could bring to the GE is to turn around and pick the candidate who would most likely win, no matter who the republicans choose and that, of course, is HILLARY.

Knowing the dems as we do and how they’ve todied up to bush even though they were in the majority, I wouldn’t be surprised that this whole scam of a primary was not purposely staged by leaders from both parties with the “real” power elite in order to make certain the republicans win the White House again!

  24. Kathleen Wynne – Interesting, but not a chance in hell. McCain is the only Republican who, due to his penchant for bucking the Party line, has the slightest possible chance of being elected Presnit this year.

They have no one else, much to their discredit. Their Party is in a shambles.

It’s an absolute disgrace that the Democrats have selected such a weak opponent to McCain. There’s still time, SuperD’s, there’s still time…

  25. Thanks, Gary. Nice work.

Since Obama has no record to speak of, his words, more than those of most candidates, are of paramount importance. What else do we have to go on but what he says he will do? But if his verbal commitments are constantly shifting, how can anyone who walks into a polling booth know what on earth they’re voting for?

Thought you might enjoy this: Obama met recently with the heads of various cycling organizations (I am an avid mountain biker). They wanted to press him to help cities and the environment by building more bike lanes; they hoped he would show, as part of his energy policy, a strong commitment to non-motorized travel.

His answer, according to one person in the room, was this: that he didn’t make promises, but that they had his full support.

Beautifully empty. Stunningly meaningless. Bush mangled language; Obama puts it in a headlock.

  26. Magdalena –

His answer, according to one person in the room, was this: that he didn’t make promises, but that they had his full support.

    Translation:

“You’re going under the bus. SUCKAS!”

  27. Obama has the fullest empty glass around.

  28. Thanks for the link count us out! The no votes are rolling in…as are the feedbacks. A presumed nominee should not be allowed the honor set aside for world leaders…but I did like the ” Europeans Should Prepare for Obama Disappointment” I’ve been disappointed for a long time, it is about time others figure this out.

    http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,2144,3470043,00.html

  29. I switched on CNN and saw that Obie was speechifyin’. I watched (on mute) a few minutes of it. I can’t get over the fact that in his postures (posturing?) he reminds me of Mussolini, especially with his damned head!

And…why did they have to carry it live? He’s a candidate, not an elected national leader (yet). It could have been covered on the 5/6:00 news. I wanted to see what was going on with the banks.

At least I was pleasantly surprised to see oil prices fell (for today I guess…).

  30. myiq: “You don’t want me, you want somebody who knows what they’re doing!”

Well, you are not megah-supah-transcendental.. otherwise you too could be a president.

  31. And what exactly do you have against “Il Duce”, Fredster? (that is meant to be snark, just in case…)

I agree with you, I have noticed for a while now that the media treats O as if he were the next president.

  32. OT, but I have to say this. I have always regarded the conventions as a show of our democracy and had the utmost respect for them. But after reading the N.E.R.D., Kanye West and Wyclef Jean are performing I am just a little dismayed. I don’t mind this type music, hell my kids listen to it; but the word here is KIDS. I don’t know too many over 30, that admit to liking this music.

I know it doesn’t really matter who plays, but I want it to be what it is, a political arena, not a rapfest.

    Does that make me old?

  33. Hey Fredster!!! saw your comment about Southern Decadence the other day. I think Mawm and I may swing through…that’s labor day weekend right? if so that’s right after the convention and we’ll be RVing back from Denver.

  34. OMG carol, that rasmussen poll is incredible!!!! I hope the SD’s get their head out of the sand long enough to see what the hell they’re doing. it really is f’d up!!!

  35. Upstate NY:

Oh just the arrogance. Will Obie decide to bomb Ethiopia now?
    Just kiddin…

I think whenever they show him giving a speech they need a crawl which states: after the speech, Mr. Obama’s handlers will present some to explain what he really meant.

  36. Too many Obama supporters were just anti-Bush and anti-Clinton. I don’t think they cared what he was saying as long as he wasn’t Hillary. They wanted someone ‘new’ and he fit the bill. The media jumped on board along with the starry-eyed Democratic leadership and – here we are.

    It makes me ill.

  37. Carol, from your link: “In the match-up between the two presumptive nominees, McCain holds a slight edge over Obama among those voters.” (Independents)

but, but, but….if this is the case for I’s what will ever happen to all those R’s who O supposedly was going to win over?

  38. I believe that poll. Even my bleeding heart liberal sister (who used to sneak sandwiches and drinks to illegal immigrant camps in Arizona) said at one time she liked McCain (before the Iraq war). Plus he has the empathy factor as a prisoner of war.

  39. You notice everytime Obama gets in trouble with the poll numbers he pays Quinnipiac and PPP to fixed the polls numbers for him…Americans are on to him

  40. And two weeks ago, he pegged withdrawal to “stability” – boy, that’s the biggest out ever. Like it’s ever going to be stable if stabilizing means we leave.

    http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/story?id=5304404&page=1

“I’ve always said that the pace of withdrawal would be dictated by the safety and security of our troops and the need to maintain stability. That assessment has not changed,” said Obama. “And when I go to Iraq and have a chance to talk to some of the commanders on the ground, I’m sure I’ll have more information and will continue to refine my policies.”

  41. The only fucking reason Wyclef Jean is performing is taht Howard Dean likes him. That’s IT. It’s their own fucking faves — for THEM AND ONLY THEM. Fuck everyone else.

  42. LOL – Janis always calms me down. She’s so outraged!

  43. Today I heard that the British publication “Guardian”;
    had a poll that puts Obama’s positive’s in the high #’s !
I found this in my papers maybe “PUMA” should be waiting for his arrival??
    Just-a-Thought
*letters@guardian.com.uk* (I think this is it?)

  44. Carol – thanks for that link!

    Here’s my favorite paragraph:

These numbers help explain why Election 2008 is competitive even though events so heavily favor the Democrats — because the Republicans are on course to nominate their strongest possible general election candidate but the Democrats are not. Perhaps even more importantly, the data suggests that voters don’t see a potential McCain Administration as the third term of President Bush.

    Um, YEAH.

So much for the “McSame” strategy.

  45. That’s what I am looking forward to, an entire evening of rap music with an adoring crowd of worshippers followed by Hillary being thrown into the mosh pit! So adult, so sophisticated, so much fun! Then a few more “jokes” about ho’s and bitches to round out the evening which is bound to appeal to those of us out here who will immediately start writing checks to keep this vaudeville act going. Jeesh!

  46. Gary, this is kinda weird, but I was looking at the posts from yesterday and where you were responding to von dipshit and I didn’t write the responses on there.

  47. This may be politically incorrect, but do they think the American public won’t be turned off by a bunch of rappers in baggy pants, mincing across the stage covered in bling while the female performers provide the usual backdrop of writhing and thrusting their pelvic bones into the lead singer while he presses their faces into his crotch? Are these people insane?

I am no fuddy duddy but I can see the jaws of many of my contemporaries suddenly hitting the table.

  48. kim you mean it says its you, but it wasn’t? that guy is definitely a paid troll. I ran his IP address and it comes from a company in chicago called CIMCO which is some kind of data mining company. I saw through the FEC that the Obama campaign has paid them several thousand dollars.

  49. Pat my sentiments exactly.

Gary, have I finally lost my mind? Are the stress over my son leaving and the health issues I have been having made me lose it.

    Or are there 2 Kims?

  50. Obama on Larry King tonight at 9.

  51. The name is Kim, maybe there are two Kims. The one posting on the post yesterday, I do not remember writing. The other one is not an Obot, but I did not write it.

  52. I don’t know kim, I didn’t see any posts there from “kim” I’ll go through it more thoroughly after work.

  53. The Obama campaign is so dirty.

  54. It’s more than that. He’s got to be dangerous when late night comedy can’t come up with any way to joke about him. I imagine some dictators in the past held themselves above humor too!

  55. there was a post by “tim”, but I didn’t see any by “kim”

  56. Plus, he is on record for starting up a national militia.

  57. Pat, I’d have thought that Americans weren’t stupid enough to fall for a smooth-talking frat boy handing them a roofied drink, either. I was wrong.

And I’ve given up hope of people being outraged over anything other than the flat-out live disembowling of a woman much less the complete sexual objectification of one. And only if she’s old, fat, or unattractive. If she’s none of these tyhings, then it’s hot sexy porn.

Sorry, I’ll just go back to researching Blackberrys and iPhones … My mom has told me she wants to buy me one for Christmas which is sweet but INSANE since she does NOT have the oney to buy me an iPhone. I’ll figure out the cost, then knock the decimal point over one before I tell her.

  58. I listened to part of Obama’s speech this morning. When he mentioned the Marshall Plan? Didn’t HRC make some reference to a new Marshall plan during the primaries? Or was it Kerry in 2004? Maybe, I’m wrong.

But one thing I did pickup [before I took the pooch out for a walk] was Obama paused several times as if he expected applause [which he didn't get while I was listening]. One of those times was when he said.

    “This is our moment.”

He paused, then repeated the line [like maybe the audience had gone deaf] ,and then finally he continued. I thought that was a bit strange. Was there applause in the middle of the speech that I missed?

I caught the conclusion. It sounded like a lot promises: this is what I will do–end the war in Iraq, defeat Al Qaeda and the Taliban, secure nuclear materials yada, yada.

But were there details? You know, how does he expect to do this while our national deficit is in the stratosphere, the mortgage industry is in freefall, gasoline is $4+ a gallon, and then we’re doubling foreign aide to Africa and the Middle East?

Our paychecks are going to be a whole lot skinnier if this guy has his way, and we’ll still be in debt up to our necks. Sorry, but I don’t see how that makes the country safer or the economy better. But people will love us, right?

Save us from this faux Savior!

  59. Gary the last comment is at 1:23 am on July 14 and it is from Kim. There are a total of three comments. Umm, I went out Saturday night and was up pretty late and had a wee bit of drink. I was in bed snoring loudly the following night. Wasn’t me.

  60. It is the Hypocrisy is thy name there is one at 1:00 am, another at 1:23 am and the last is 1:36.

  61. Obama is nothing more than a salesman. Words, words, words, then drive it off the lot and whoops, just another “lemon”.

  62. Paula was on Fox – the same dipshit from yesterday did the interview – he apparently had a little ritalin in him after all of our emails.

The line at the bottom said – “anti-Obama supporters “horrified” that she is supporting him”.

If only “horrified” could really cover it.

Yes, I think a bunch of hip-hopping, mostly naked gyrating men and women is something I’m looking forward to, maybe, someone can expose their breast.

  63. so, Pat, how much do you like O?

  64. Try to check out Savagepolitics:

We are regarded as a force to be contended with in the same ranking as Independents and Undecideds.

How is the fundraising going and are there any #s for Hillary’s debt retirement?

  65. You put that form of “entertainment” into the Dem Convention and that group from the Religious Right that he is currently ass kissing will turn to stone. These performers should not be showcased as what America represents.

It may appeal to the young and uninformed, but middle America it is not.

Whose singing the National Anthem, Li’l Kim?

  66. Aren’t they going to release the debt retirement figures on July 20th?

  67. Lil’ Kim will if she is out of jail for lying about her friend “carrying”.

  68. Am I the only one noticing that all of a sudden BO has some gray hair showing through?

  69. Pat, I don’t think you’re a fuddy-duddy. The musical line-up isn’t go to go over well in some demographics. IMHO, It’s going to make the Democratic Party look juvenile to already critical Dems, most Repubs, and some Independents. It’s strange, but for a moment, reading that line-up, I forgot all about Obama, and just thought about the spectacle of my party living up to two things Right Wing Conservatives have always said:

    1. Let the liberals dominate the culture; who cares, we’ll run the government and hold the power.

    and

    2. Conservatives are mature, liberals immature, and therefore unworthy of holding the reins.

At what point will the DNC realize they’re turning off older voters–who generally have the money, and generally get to the polls in greater numbers than their children?

I’m imagining a TEPID voter or an undecided turning on the television and suddenly making up her mind: no way I’m going with the soda-pop gang, here.

I know I should be thrilled, since I’m not voting for Obama, and simply staying home on Nov. 4. But I still, out of reflex, hate it when my party behaves bone-headedly.

The will have me inured here, though, pretty soon.

  70. They won’t have to do a body search on Lil’ Kim at the convention. She never wears enough clothes to conceal anything.

  71. I try to not look or listen to Obama as much as possible. If his hair is suddenly showing gray it could be that he colors it to begin with or the fact that he has stepped into this pile of poo called a campaign and realizes he is in way over his head.

  72. That’s right – she will be the one exposing her other breast – the one that doesn’t get out that often!

  73. Carol: Stop, I am falling off the chair!!

  74. Upstate: How are you? You have been “absent” for a bit.

  75. Wolfson was just on Fox and asked about us. Did anyone hear what was said. I didn’t get to hear it.

  76. He was going Grecian Formula beforehand to get the college kids to think he was one of them — now he’s trying to show he’s “mature” by letting the grey show. Everything about him is a goddamned lie.

  77. BO is preaching men should respect women. Hillary must be whoopening him up side the head.

    PUMA$ Who Donate Rule!

  78. With that line up, it pretty much proves that he is hoping to win with the youth turnout and AA voters.

I always kinda wanted to keep some dignity in the convention, even if we are labeled progressive and liberal.

  79. Carol said:
the one that doesn’t get out that often!

    ROFLMAO!!!!

  80. Does anyone know if Gary is checking to see if the person who posted is another Kim?

  81. Some numbers people, researchers, have crunched numbers regarding polling. McC. is going up slowly, maintaining. O. is not, has become less popular.

  82. Peggy Sue, fellow pooch-owner, exactly: So many grandiose ideas and absolutely no specifics in the speech. The sweep of it was just astonishing. I want a reality-based candidate please. Leave Superman in the comics.

“This is our moment.” If there was silence at this, perhaps it was because many Americans know this is not our moment. This is India’s moment. This is China’s moment. Our country is in the midst of woes that run deeper than most people want to admit. We want someone who can see this and help us. This is not about a moment. It’s going to be a slog to get us out of our various messes. We need someone who knows this, knows how to work, and to think in segments longer than aphorisms.

  83. There is little about this guy that is for real. His life story, his political “rise”, his campaign, his beliefs, his name. Was once known as Barry Obama. Whatever!

  84. Carol,

    O. needs to do is set a good example of treatment of women.
He’s pandering again because he contributed to the media’s bashing of Sen. Clinton.

  85. Maybe, Snoop Dog is busy that night.

I do believe because Tupac is getting to vote, he should also get to perform and choose the lineup.

    PUMA$ Who Donate Rule!

  86. We will not be enjoying a “moment” again until we dig ourselves out of the mire that Bush is sure to leave behind. Like mopping up after an all night bash. Takes hours to get the place back in order.

Magdelena could not be anymore correct; our competition in India and China is leaving us at the starting gate this time around.

  87. Tupac is dead but that should not prevent him from voting.

  88. From Alegre just now:
Big news folks – it looks like our efforts in contacting those Superdelegates are starting to pay off so keep on writing to them (ok maybe Donna B’s a waste of time). There are unconfirmed reports based on phone banking efforts to reach out to Super D’s that 8 previously Obama SD’s, expressed that, given the opportunity, they would vote for Hillary at the convention.
I heard about an interview Will Bower of PUMA did recently, where he said delegates are starting to say they’ll vote for Hillary in Denver if the DNC do the right thing and run an open and fair convention. That means a roll call vote with Hillary’s name put into nomination and on the ballot.

  89. Things that make you go Hmmmm (vs. things that make you go I TOLD YOU SO):
    http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1131ap_obama_web_site.html

Barack Obama’s aides have removed criticism of President Bush’s increase of troops to Iraq from the campaign Web site, part of an effort to update the Democrat’s written war plan to reflect changing conditions.

  90. If Alegre is correct, this is the best news all week to happen!!

  91. Hillary just sent her supporters a letter to keep her money for 2012.

    Pay attention you stupid dipshits!

  92. Obama must keep those internet savvy bloggers on his website busy morning, noon, and night with all the revisionism going on over there.

Hope they are not women as they won’t be getting equal pay.

  93. Good Lord after all those rappers seen the way he treated Hillary. They get called sexist by the very same people who also practice Sexism. I know Snoop Dogg said that Hillary Clinton would make a good president. 50 Cent also thought enough about Hillary Clinton to get into a war with Bill OReiley.
Yes I am a big fan of Rap. Yes they use the B word alot but a good bit of the time they are referring to men as well as women.
Yes Rap has some issues that we need to deal with but they also have some very positive things going on too.

  94. Hillarysmygirl08-I don’t mind rap, I like some of it. However, I do not think this is the proper forum. Better yet, have some rap, have some rock, have multiple genres that cater to all ages and demographics. That is my point.

  95. Pat:
I’ve often said (at home) that they stole the nomination from Hillary because they couldn’t figure out how they were going to pay her 66% of the president salary.

  96. Hola Pat. I am fine.

I know, I know. I have not been “around” lately. Painting, fixing a house and preparing to move will do that to people.

Plus, my dog ate my “political mojo” Bad, bad dog.

  97. elizinsandi,

We’ve know about that for about a week.

Apparently, if someone goes to the Rasussen website, they’re still polling Hillary against McCain and she’s winning by 8 points.

  98. Kim, I agree. Would it kill the DNC to be representational in *any” way this year?

  99. Hey Fredster!!! saw your comment about Southern Decadence the other day. I think Mawm and I may swing through…that’s labor day weekend right? if so that’s right after the convention and we’ll be RVing back from Denver.

That’s cool! They have an RV park near/around the FQ. Let me do some checking to see exactly where it’s at. I know there’s also another near the 9th ward (I’ve seen pics of that one, it looks nice). It would also let you take the “destruction tour” if you were interested.

Contact me at my email of record here on the site.

  100. jjmtacoma: It figures.

  101. Got a feeling Claire McGaskill’s 18 yr old daughter picked the entertainment for the evening.

  102. Its probably already mentioned in comments but I understand that Obama’s Iraq position has now been scrubbed from his website as he prepares a new, improved policy. Is there nothing that shames this guy into being honest? Is there no media willing to take these powers on? I was perplexed by my newspaper’s coverage until today when I called to place a classified ad and heard the recorded answer identify the paper as a Chicago Tribune Company. That would be the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. My subscription is now cancelled.

  103. gary, do you have all the solid data re: CIMCO and others just for Confluence?

That’s a dirty-tricks story that we could share with the MSM. Let me know. I’m pretty sure RD has my email addy.

  104. This may be politically incorrect, but do they think the American public won’t be turned off by a bunch of rappers in baggy pants

FWIW I am a big fan of Kanye and his style is very influential, one of the things being that he does NOT wear the baggy pants.. :) I don’t have any problem with him performing. One thing I would also say is Kanye spoke out against hip hop always attacking gay people, which was a gutsy thing for him to do, I actually think he has more guts than Obama by a long shot. Wyclef Jean is pretty positive. As for N.E.R.D. I don’t even know who listens to them, maybe they’re someone’s opening act.. :) I hope they get other artists who aren’t hip hop, I probably wouldn’t like them but there should be music everybody likes, that’s true.

  105. Well then let’s make Kayne our nominee, that’s more than Obama’s done.

  106. i have a dream…

Oh frack it, I’ve tried this at TalkLeft.

I’m now watching the All-Star Game, a pretentious exhibition game in recent years, and I found myself weeping openly well before Willie Mays (WILLIE! FRACKIN! MAYS!) was introduced, and certainly I went downhill from there.

What I want to say is, Bud Selig (who I hate) does this very well, and the Dems screw it up each and every time, and seem to be aiming to screw it up yet again:

What does the endless line of oldies tell us? That baseball is eternal, and that what we do here and now counts.

That’s what I’ve gotten from the analogous “HOF” lists at Dem Cons past. Yet this time I fear we’ll leave our SUBSTANTIAL accomplishments behind, in the name of Unity.

And that, in my estimation, wouldl be a great mistake.

  107. OK, I’ve read my (incoherent) post.

    My dream is this:
We Dems (as remains) claim the Progressive past that’s available to us. “Take what you need and leave the rest.”

This means that every time HRC comes up, the crowd goes wild, and Obama better get over it. But if they boo HRC, he better deal with.

I differ from PUMAs only in this: she’s my senator come what may. And for the people of the state of NY, can I say, You do us proud.

I wait for a reason to vote for him.

  108. Obama didn’t steal those words from Deval. They had worked together. That myth was debunked ages ago sir.

The rest of your post, about him giving himself an out, is unfortunately right on the money.

I think the PUMA group is, on the whole, quite sad, and I support Obama, but more and more, I find I’m really just opposing McCain.

    Very good post.

  109. This is America..hey, “it is what it is”. I support Obama he is for change..Change is what we need.

  110. umm…if you are going to call me a liar, link to the proof. who “debunked” it? what does it mean “they worked together” . Obama has not been held accountable for one single fucking thing he has done. Including trashing the legacy of our only two term Democrat president in a generation. forgive me if I don’t take your criticism to heart. Anyone who still supports Obama is either a tool or an idiot. Which one are you?

  111. Tru, that is the stupidest piece of horseshit i’ve ever read. Change is what we need? um no, what we need is an experienced progressive leader who can salvage our country from 8 years of corrupt “leadership” you gonna “hope” that away? It’s idiots like you that got us to where we are now. anyone who uses the phrase “it is what it is” is either intellectually lazy, or just a plain old dumbass

  112. Gary, you still here?

  113. dan, that’s hardly unbiased, how bout some real proof? you know like third party impartial proof. amateur. And I’m supposed to applaud you for just now coming out of your kool aid haze? no thanks. You’re to blame for this shit, so forgive me if I don’t welcome you from camp obama with open arms…get lost

and keep your suggestions to yourself…you guys just can’t help but throwing around words like right wing and racist to describe life long democrats.

when I was summarily walked off the plank by you and your fellow “progressives” I didn’t look back, so forgive me if my answer to your invitation to discuss with wit and reason…. FUCK YOU

  114. [...] Words Matter Senator Obama (by garychapelhill at The Confluence) Let’s take a look at a line from [Tuesday’s war] speech by Senator Obama, as reported by Politico under the headline Obama says Iraq war must end” : “I will focus this strategy on five goals essential to making America safer: ending the war in Iraq responsibly…” He says he will end the war responsibly. That single word gives him his out… We thought in 2006 that the newly elected Democratic congress would force a timetable on the Bush Administration. Didn’t happen.  What makes anyone think they’ll force one on an Obama administration?  Until the troops start coming home, his words are meaningless. [...]
