Caution!!! Big Orange Satan at Work!

By this point I have been called a racist so many times, it doesn’t even phase me anymore. I’ve pointed out on numerous occasions that by calling us racists, the Obamphiles only minimize real racism when it occurs. More disturbing, however, is when they project their own racist fantasies onto us. I have noticed this on many diaries, especially MyDD and Kos. Case in point, some jackass at the cheetoh-stained colostomy bag named JeffLieber. I won’t link in honor of the strike, but his post is entitled “Correspondence on a New Yorker Cover” and has close to 800 comments as of this writing. In the post clever little Jeff thinks he’s smart enough to employ satire himself in his critique of the satirical cover of the current New Yorker.
See, he thinks it would be oh so witty to conjure up a fake correspondence between the artist and his editor. What follows is some of the most racist imagery I’ve read in this campaign:
Dear David Remnick, Editor, New Yorker:
Dude, I’ve ben thinking about a hysterical piece of cover art.
What if I did one of those evolutionary charts, showing how primitive man evolved into modern man, but where the missing link is supposed to go… I drew Barack Obama! It could be ironic, y’know, and show how SOME think black people are a lower form of human life!
Oh! And I could draw it so the last figure… the most evolved… looks like John McCain!
Huh? Huh? Funny?
Tell me what you think?
Love,
Barry Blitt, illustrator
But wait, it gets even nastier:
Dear Barry:
Great idea, Barry! Great!
But let me try and make it even better. What if… ha-ha-ha… what if you drew a slave ship and sitting at one of the stations, chained to his seat, rowing like mad… was Barack Obama.
That would be VERY IRONIC and VERY FUNNY, because it could show how SOME people still see him as a descendant of the slave trade and therefore, like… property.
You know, like a washing machine!
Funny, right?
Hugs and kisses,
David
Dear David:
The slave ship thing is… my wife and I were HOWLING about it in bed last night.
But it gave me an even better idea.
What if the cover were an image from the south in like the 30’s, right? And Barack Obama were running for his life? (I bet you can see where I’m going here!) And chasing Barack Obama where a bunch of Klu Klux Klan members, in their white sheets, carrying torches.
Wouldn’t that be HYSTERICAL! And Ironic. So ironic! It could be about how SOME have seen this election about race-relations and how SOME are still dealing in the politics of hate!
I just think… ha-ha-ha… think that would be GREAT?!? You?
With admiration and class,
Barry
Dear Barry:
The lynching cover does sound GREAT, and CLASSY, but what if… what if you draw the image of Martin Luther King on the hotel balcony, but instead of Martin Luther King… standing there is… BARACK OBAMA!
Isn’t that FUNNY? And, like, SUPER IRONIC.
It could be about how SOME people who have run in this campaign have made references to people wanting to assassinate the Democratic candidate for President! Wow! Huh? Yes!?!?
With hopes for a better tomorrow,
David
The irony is almost unbearable. By writing some amazingly racist crap, he thinks he is standing up to racism. Extraoridinary behavior…we really should have some anthropologists look into it. I guess what he is trying to do is criticize the magazine cover, which is obviously satirizing the far-right rumor mill (which, incidentally has never been something the PUMA movement has resorted to, we don’t need rumors, the facts are quite damning all by themselves). Yet he conjures up the most vile images: lynching, slave ships, and even the MLK assassination and then uses them for his very base comedy/satire. That, in my opinion, IS tasteless, and offensive, and yes, even racist. Satire that employs real, very painful images of racism for the sole purpose of attacking ones political enemies is disgusting and wrong. These tools need to get a clue. And so do African Americans if they think people like this sleazeball are their allies.
***UPDATE*** Unbelievable. This shithead actually has the balls to come back and update his post and say, “oh yeah, I forgot to call all you hicks out there who are not New Yorker illustrators racists”:
Had I been in the room – and I wasn’t – I might have printed the same image in a thought circle with the little bubbles leading to say… Appalachia… or Utah…
What a giant asshole, jeez…

Gary, I think you’re on to something: a projection of fantasies is a possibility. One of the many things that angers me is the success this strategy has had (from the BO campaign as well as from the enthralled followers) in reducing of “r*ce” to simplistic, binary opposites:
You’re black or you’re white. You’re white and love Obama (good!) or white and don’t (uh-oh, bad!).
Identity is not so binary — and those of us who are mixed r*ce or non-white but not African American negotiate different identities all the time. Those identities aren’t static or simple.
Bottom line: the binary thinkers, like the charmer of your DK example, don’t give a damn about race. To them, it’s just a plaything for scoring political points, as tightly as they’ll clutch their pearls and assure you in the most sanctimonious tones they they’re LIVID, I tell ya, LIVID WITH RIGHTEOUS OUTRAGE!
Oh, please.
I’ll repeat — This flap about the cover sends a not-so-subtle message: there are no legitimate reasons to oppose the Dear Leader. Any criticism is illegitimate and a moral failing of those that do not embrace the Dear Leader. The only remedy is to redeem one’s sins and embrace the Dear Leader.
The BO fans will milk this for all it’s worth. They’ve got nothing else.
Ahhh, race-baiting. Obama learned it well here in Chicago, and it’s a song that too many of his more educated supporters chime in on a regular basis.
Gary, earlier in the primary I thought (wrongly) that the whole “let’s-cry-racist-strategy” of the O campaign would be over by now.
Will postracial Obamaphiles ever tire of this? Will it backfire? Let’s wait and see.
Just got finished reading some of the comments about the New Yorker cover on a blog post at the Boston Globe blog page. About half the readers were convinced the cover was intended to reinforce the RW rumor-mill expounding the bits of idiocy the cover exposes. Roughy an equal number swear up and down the cover represents truth.
Barely 1 in 20 recognized the cover for the satire it’s supposed to convey. It’s sad proof of the intellectual depths to which American society has fallen.
Sadly, I think, Pogo was right.
You hit the nail on the head, Gary. It’s all projection. They hate the way they feel so they project their inner horror stories on the rest of us.
By the way, in case you didn’t know, Heidi Li is going to be on “Your World” with Neil Cavuto today between 4 and 5 EST. Fox News obviously.
Do you remember the part in the movie Good Morning Vietnam when the guy takes over the radio from Robin Wiliams to show them what is funny …. that is what that so called satire reminded me of …
evokes more pain than laughter
but wait
STOP PRESS SOMEONE SAID “OREO” in reference to OBAMA so they must be “the latest racist”
Longtime Washington talk-show host John McLaughlin is facing fire Monday for referring to Barack Obama as an “Oreo” during a segment on his Sunday political program, “The McLaughlin Group.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/07/14/mclaughlin-takes-heat-for-oreo-comment/
I think they believe that because they support Obama, they are allowed to put this crap out.
It is almost like they believe they have a get out of racist jail free card.
I wonder how many of them actually know any African Americans. I mean really know them.
Thanks regency, but I’m at work, at didn’t set the tivo
can you update us on what she says? I’m hoping she’s going to announce the Hill’s debt is paid
How incredibly offensive and crass… I am constantly amazed at the gaul of these people…. it is disgusting.
Texas Hill Country
http://texashillblog.wordpress.com
this is very offensive. and it reinforces my thinking that the OFB is built on little more than resentment tribalism that demonizes anyone who does not completely agree with them.
OH, but it’s OK for Bernie Mac to call black women HOs and for Barry to say — just messing with ya man — meaning — yeah, black women are HOs.
As long as the barry folks are the ones doing the name calling and pointing fingers and blaming. If anyone else points out the racism in the barry camp they FREAK out.
This was supposed to point out ……….never mind…..why bother trying to explain — the barry camp is way overboard.
Disgusting.
Gary, get me out of the filter please.
Oh my, don’t let them fool you. The kossacks must been in heaven today., finally, something to rail against in favor of Obama. Something to point at and scream racism so they can feel very evolved for supporting Obama. It’s sort of funny. Most people won’t see this cartoon. And, New Yorker readers know it’s satire, but don’t let that stop the kossacks. They have been waiting ever since the Clinton faux-assisnation comment, for something, anything, to rail against.
mass–what I don’t understand is how they can rationalize using racist imagery to fight racism–I really don’t get it….bboomer, are you here? I need a psychologist/psychiatrist stat!
Oh great!
Let’s silence the paper that employs Hendrick Hertzberg and Sy Hersh.
Oh and Barry Blitt: Danish cartoon anyone?
Sheesh!
Looks like even when she’s not at an event, HRC is still more popular than Pampers.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/07/clinton-obama.html
and this guy wants to know if MCCain will get equal time being “satirised” http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_columnists_ezorn/2008/07/will-the-new-yo.html
as IF no one from the obama camp has ever done anything to anyone …. I am waiting to see if he will publish my comment
the bos are just BEGINNING to get equal time being satirised and this is legitimate … hope they get used to it … it is overdue , and a grain of sand compared to the mountain of it dished out by the bo campaign to Hillary … or dont
bros not hoes t shirts count??
and did you miss the cartoon on CNN this morning on which bitter old man is the most bitter Jesse Jackson Bill Clinton or Jesse Helms ??
you should check it out you get to vote for one !!!
Party
Unity
My
Ass
Ps I have a Hillary nutcracker and am not afraid to use it and I sent one to Jesse Jackson
I’m already sick of the race baiting and we have months to go yet. Gosh, won’t it be fun to have a president you can never criticize because it’s racist to criticize Obama?
Mountain Sage
These BO people really need to be educated on how BO treated African-Americans in his own district. Many live in squalor because of his hands-off leadership.
WOW. May I say, as someone who sometimes writes satire, that the Great Orange Satan’s attempt is simply awful?
And notice how they manage to bring in Hillary NO MATTER WHAT?
Talk about disgusting, puerile projection. As if Hillary ever said anything about assassinating Obama.
These people need psychological help.
CNN is currently discussing the New Yorker article. The reporter is not moderating the two sides, she said outright that she thinks it is racist, horrible, and ridiculous. Talk about media bias…
It doesn’t matter what I think of it (I get that it was satire, but it didn’t go far enough, which is why it is awkward), but my point is that the media continues to hold his water..the reporter says this proves we are racist…
Last week, Gergen was on CNN talking about Obama’s flip on FISA and Gergen said it isn’t a big deal because Obama has been fighting for privacy rights for 30-40 years…umm..yeah, like since Obama was between the ages of 7 and 17 years he has been fighting for privacy rights…
Ridiculous bias at CNN…
No tactics were too cheap when Hillary was their target. Sexism – derision – mockery? All were plentiful at dKos.
Now the outrage is utterly predictable and revealing. The Sacred One must not be satirized or criticized.
Hey, it’s a tough world. A man who collapses over a cartoon is certainly not fit to take on foreign leaders or terrorists.
AnnieO,
i don’t think most of them care about black ppl, esp poor ones. to them, their support of Obama absolves them of any responsibility for racism. that’s one reason they love Obama and vilify anyone who doesn’t.
your support of Obama is the sole criteria for judging if you’re a racist, i.e. a higher being.
support Obama = not a racist (so you don’t need to do anything else) and GOOD
oppose Obama = racist (no matter what else you do) and BAD
supporting Obama is like a get out of jail free card. it’s cheap grace.

Heh, I’m not sure if I’m qualified, but I think it’s a combination of things. I think part of it is that strategy of using of race as a powerful, powerful plaything. By saying something so provocative — to suggest that the New Yorker magazine or the cartoonist or Hillary supporters are **really** saying/believing the racist things the DK charmer mentions, that’s a mighty big weapon. It allows the BO fans to feel morally superior, and it incorporates a topic as hot as plutonium: r*cism. We know that the KKK is evil, that systematic evolutionary r*cial theory is evil — we all agree on that — so to throw that at an opponent shuts down all debate.
There’s a reason why Godwin’s Law arose. To call someone a Nazi is to invoke an ultimate evil — an evil no thinking moral person could deny as evil — and thus, it shuts down debate. It’s like a grenade, a shock and awe tactic. We’re supposed to be left blinking, horrified, paralyzed, at such a terrible thing even being uttered. That’s why the r*acism-as-plaything folks want to do — associate opponents with something so horrific and shocking that all debate is cut short. Because who couldn’t be horrified by the images that diary brings up?
It’s meant to be provocative, to bring up the most unholy examples of r*cial hate and attribute them to political opponents — or, in this case, even the cartoonist who is mocking the same people they mock, weirdly enough. That’s my theory, anyway. YMMV.
The icing on the cake is being able to bring Hillary Clinton into it. They love that. They need to make her into a KKK demon in order to justify their own demonic hate, as evidenced in the diary above.
I could not agree more with masslib. They’re loving this. They will get as much outrage mileage as possible out of it, and the best way to make the fun last longer is to make the debate as charged, insulting, demeaning, and ugly as possible. The shortcut: bring up the KKK. Bring up evolutionary biology. Then sit back, smirk, and say to all your opponents, “oh come on now, WE ALL KNOW that’s what you REALLY feel.” And, watch the fireworks.
The Obama campaign knows the New Yorker cover is a gift to them.
It allows them to play the victim.
And it enables them to cover up the article inside.
supporting Obama is like a get out of jail free card. it’s cheap grace.
To me, supporting Obama means getting out of jail only to end up in the penitentiary (my guess).
If Obama manages to wiggle his ass into the White House look for more of the same. I don’t mean the satire as that will be quickly shut down. It will be in the form of censorship.
Any allusion to criticism or questioning is going to be met with immediate slapdown. This is a guy who does not like taking questions and his defenders are quick to react to even the mildest sort of criticism as “racist”. Bush enjoyed a free ride for several years because anyone daring to challenge his policies was quickly labeled “unpatriotic”.
There will be carefully selected and constructed press releases to ensure he is not “bothered” by answering direct questions. Remember how Bush employed the tactic of asking the media to submit questions in advance? This will become the norm if O gets in. He has few answers. Is not taking questions now, the press is held at bay.
It will only increase after November. His surrogates will do the talking and you had better like it otherwise Al Sharpton and Leo Terrell will be on nightly screaming for all they are worth.
sassy- I totally agree with you. It drives me crazy that BO gets a free pass from most of MSM and his followers on something that so horrible.
thank you alice, putting it into context with Godwin’s law makes perfect sense…great analysis
Everyone, if there are things you want to talk about, call Lou Dobbs between 3 and 6 EST to let him know you haven’t forgotten that this race is far from over!
#: 1-877-553-6227
Yup. Obama is tanking and he only knows one trick: Play the race card and play it big.
Pathetic.
Ironically, I’d bet ten to one the artist is a BO supporter. Honestly, this is the most manufactured campaign I have ever seen. Manufactured outrage, manufactured fist pumps, manufactured delegate wins, manufactured unity…it’s pretty funny.
gary: May I get out of moderation?
That’s why the r*acism-as-plaything folks want to do — associate opponents with something so horrific and shocking that all debate is cut short.
excellent point. because they don’t want a debate or rational discussion. (few marketing programs do and, unfortunately, politics has been more about marketing than substance for decades at least).
they won’t win a debate. but if they can shut down debate and vilify their opponents, they might win.
it’s similar to what Rove did except they use hatred as well as fear.
“A man who collapses over a cartoon is certainly not fit to take on foreign leaders or terrorists.”
Amen, AnnieO.
And may we all pause and remember that all those months the sexist mud was being slung at Hillary, from all corners, from nearly all media outlets, and via the tatstefully terraced sales racks of airport novelty shops, she simply kept on talking about the issues?
And we’re the ones who are supposed to grow up?
I vote for the adult.
I vote for tough as nails.
I vote Hillary.
Whew! Thank heavens something came up to save the Obots from looking at the slivers of criticism beginning to break out in some quarters over Obama’s policies and his associates. Now they can go back to their only comfortable state – outrage over shabby treatment of poor Obama, the perpetual AA victim.
It was scary, the thought of all those dazed Obots wandering the streets & having to face a little reality over their Chosen One.
Alice did a great job in deconstructing the label. Hopefully people will continue to think for themselves and not let this type of intimidation interfere with reasoning.
I do not like Obama for many reasons starting with his total lack of experience. The more he is covered the less I respect him as both a man and a politician. There is nothing unique about him. You see his like in every office, every neighborhood, every barbecue you have ever attended. The schmoozer.
The schmoozer may want your job, borrow your weed wacker, drink all your beer. He always is on the hustle.
You know, who even thinks of the kind of disturbed s*it in that post, gary? Who would even think something like that up? I tell you, this stuff is pretty twisted. And, there run all the kossacks, like a moth to light, to rec it up, and share their phoney outrage. Don’t these people tire of themselves?
there really should be a word for those who conjure up the most racist images and language while calling others racist.
Oh there is a word: Obamabots aka Kossocks
What we have is called: Diversionary Outrage.
Everything they do is timed and meant to keep the media and uninformed voters discussing some outlandish event or “wrong” perpetrated on BO. That way they don’t have to spend anytime discussing real issues or his behavior or his gaffes.
PUMA$ Who Donate Rule!
Wait! This imaginary correspondence is fake. You know how I now? There’s no blame “shillary” in it.
EOF – Yes there is! They didn’t refer to her by name, though. They just talked about how she wanted Obama to be assassinated.
Charming bunch, eh?
The New Yorker cover has given the Obots the catnip that has been missing for a few days since the FISA debacle. They were making every contorted effort to justify domestic spying that has been approved by their Precious.
They will be allowed to feed off this for a few days and eventually work themselves into another reason for blaming Hillary. Someone was complaining that she needs to come out and declaim the cover. The poster was foaming at the mouth.
I remember Mad Magazine. A cover like that would have been the norm. Apparently there are few of us left who recognize satire for what it is without reaching for the fainting chair. Our national sense of humor has been replaced by faux indignation and a demand for apologies where none is warranted.
Christ, these guys have been living on their own for how long now, and they still blame Mommy that their fucking laundry doesn’t magically do itself.
I don’t even CARE if it’s objectionable at this point. The only thing I care about is that it was fine to shred the crap out of Hillary as a woman, but the minute Barky gets a little taste of the same medicine, they foam at the mouth.
Fuck them. FUCK them.
I approve of satire, particularly when it’s directed at Those We Must Place Beyond Reproach.
Anyone watched “Inherit the Wind” lately?
The job of the media should be “to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable.”
How one of the comfortable responds reveals a great deal about his character.
OT, there is a massive troll on the “About Us” thread. I’ve responded, but a little house-tossing may be in order.
Do you realize that if we lived back in Roman times the entire group on this blog would be fed to the lions for our combined critique of the presumptive?
I wonder how soon the First Amendment will be gutted after January?
These people are absolutely despicable. They are the ones who blinded followed this idiot and they are the ones who have gotten us in the mess.
I’m with Janis, fuck them.
masslib: you may be right about Blitt being an Obama supporter, but after Obama tossing him under the bus, and the Obots stamping him as “racist” he might rethink his position, heh?
Everyone near a tv, keep an eye out for Heidi on “Your World”
They probably paid the cartoonist to do this bit of work.
Remember how when Bush always did outrageous things, we would suddenly get some diversion story. They learned well–feed the masses with pap–sorta like the Romans keeping the people entertained with Colosseum fights.
These ‘kids’ are really immature. I retired from teaching last year and every year, students were needier. It seemed they got little attention at home (everybody working, I guess) so each little jewel wanted your constant attention.
AnnieO,
the MSM is not going to do this. they LOVE cheap grace.
i think McCain or (more likely) 527s are going to have to challenge Obama on this in order for it to get traction. Nader or McKinney might do it but they won’t get much press (unless they can break 10% and get into the Google debate and the issue comes up there). unfortunately, i think all those things are unlikely.
oh, btw, did anyone see this hit job on Mccain by the AP today. He’s too old to be president doncha know!
http://www.wral.com/news/political/story/3200788/
and don’t miss the picture…it looks like he’s cupping his hand to his ear like “what’s that ya say there sonny?” Our media is loathesome…
Heidid is coming up. Pull up a chair or a website and get comfy.
Interestingly, the New Yorker cover (as stupid and missing the mark as it is) isn’t about race, slavery, kkk, lynching, etc. So the DKos diarist isn’t even satirizing the right satire… !
The cover is about militancy (at least that’s what I “read” in it) –
the Angela Davis-like Michelle; Barry as madrasa attendee .. the picture of Osama on the fireplace..
nothing in the cover that I saw references AA racial slurs or stereotypes. the black power movement is actually the opposite of the AA Jim Crow era stereotypes…
Another idiot obamaphile with a half-azzed education who thinks he’s a genius…
spare me..
I wonder how soon the First Amendment will be gutted after January?
the OFB has already given its blessing with its support of Obama’s Faith-based Initiative and its silence when Clinton-supporting sites were yanked en mass.
i never thought i’d say something like this but if Obama wins, i think the Republicans will do a better job in standing up for a few of our rights than the Dems in congress who will probably cave to Obama on most things. i don’t think either party will oppose some things, e.g, Faith-based Orgs, FISA-type bills, undermining Roe.
I’m with Alice in the first comment, this is pure projection and it’s sick.
Wow! What a hyperactive asshole on Fox. Heidi barely got in a word.
what happened??…some of us are at work and have no tv access…
Just watched Heidi on Cavuto. Is it me, or has Fox also become a cheerleader for Obama. The interviewer talked over, around and through Heidi while smirking most of the time. Like the Denver Group and its purpose was laughable.
Poor Heidi was interrupted often enough, a great ploy, by the way, that she had to keep trying to get her talking points across in a shorter period of time.
Has the entire MSM, with the exception of possibly Hannity, all on the Obama bandwagon? This is unbelievable. The openig segment had Trace Gallagher explaining the Obama campaign’s position on the New Yorker cover as if he were offended! Where do we go from here?
He was a condescending asshole.
Fox made sure that Heidi’s message was totally obliterated from start to finish. Unbelievable.
Thanks, Gary, for troll excision!
The YouTube Newcast seems better and better. No ONE in the mainstream media is willing to be straightforward. I’m working–and falling way behind–on doing an audio newwcast, but a video one would is so necessary.
We HAVE to push back. Otherwise, the electorate will be completely misinformed and jaded by August. This is our chance to break in. I’m not kidding.
Was Heidi able to say anything at all? Who was the interviewer?
But doesn’t the FOX republic want a nice easy Obama convention? If Repugs have been financing BO, of course they don’t want a successful Denver Group. They’ll have wasted their money, then.
They want us to vote McCain, or not vote at all, but for god’s sake don’t get Hillary anywhere near the ticket.
Not sure who the interviewer was, he was filling in for Neil Cavuto.
Heidi tried to explain that her group was working to be sure that Hillary was on the rollcall ballot. She tried to explain that the two are separated by not that many votes but he kept talking over her. She again tried to explain that Hillary merely suspended her campaign and did not concede. That if Hillary chooses she can withdraw her name and so be it. But the Denver Group wants to be able to give her the ability to make that decision on her own.
The talking head was chuckling over the fact that Hillary is really “out” and points to her campaigning for Obama. Poor Heidi, every time she opened her mouth, he jumped in. It was a total waste of her time.
I usually censor myself on here but this guy was a dickhead!!!
This is why I don’t watch Fox.
Don’t be fooled, guys. Fox is an arm of the Republican Party. As such, they will do anything to get their man elected. And they want real Democrats to STFU.
They sure don’t want Hillary back again.
They worked so hard to get Obama nominated.
Magdelena; Even at this point I am not so sure of your thesis. Knowing that Murdoch has endorsed Obama may be why Fox has temporarily suspended criticism of him. It would not surprise me to see them actually wanting an Obama win as Murdoch sends those daily talking point memos to the talking heads.
Even O’Reilly has gone soft on him. Usually he is all out of his chair in rage at anyone he perceives as a “liberal” but he has been cutting even Bernard Goldberg off when he lays into Obama.
Something is not quite right over there. Can’t put my finger on it but this is very unusual for Fox.
Not sure why you even give them traffic by going there? I used to live on those sites and others but other than going to check at TPM twice I have never been back to that whole combine/collective of like sites. I like my new bookmarks better anyway.
PUMA since June 2nd 2008.
And listen to that unhinged jaw Dick Morris. He is even giving Obama pointers! Against McCain, their candidate. Doesn’t add up.
Nefarious people hardly do a 180 without trying to gain something.
Pat Johson:
I agree that whomever the FOX ‘head’ was, put too much effort into to being pithy and not enough into being “fair and balanced”.
The Republicans know Obama is his own worst enemy. They don’t have to do a thing, other than keep Hillary from coming back.
This fake correspondence reminds me of a song by Roy Zimmerman of the Foreman, a faux pirates’ ditty titled A-Whalin’ and much loved by the most obnoxious cadre of self-righteous Greenpeace volunteers. It’s a veritable catalog of whale-slaughtering porn. The shadow cast by some parts of the left is long indeed.
regencyq
I hate to say this, but, that interviewer did make a good point. Hillary has to be willing to do it. Is she. God I hope so.
All of the comments on this thread have been great.
I caught the end of the interview with Heidi. The interviewer (is that really the proper term? I don’t think these journalists know how to interview any more) was a blond, smirky, little twit. However, I do think that Heidi did a great job and managed to articulate her position in spite of his rude and unprofessional interruptions.
re: link given by LAMusing, on July 14th, 2008 at 3:14 pm — The comments were overwhelmingly pro-Hillary. They can’t all be from people here, so I feel encouraged that there is a real swell of support for her underway.
Obama Bullying Hillary Out of Convention?
Excerpt:
Sue Castner of Portland is a longtime Clintonite who was a big fund-raiser for Hillary Clinton and will be one of her delegates at the Democratic National Convention. Nobody was more loyal. Days before Clinton dropped out of the race, Castner told me: “If it comes down to a [convention] floor fight, I grew up in New Jersey. I’ve got brass knuckles. I am not remotely afraid of a floor fight.”
Castner is still coming to terms with the reality of Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee, judging by an e-mail of hers (see it after the jump) that is making the rounds. Castner was in a group of Clinton supporters who met with Obama and Clinton on June 26 in D.C. – and she wasn’t too happy with how it went.
Ms. Castner’s email: http://countusout.wordpress.com/2008/07/14/obama-bullying-hillary-out-of-convention/
jules – Good. I’m certainly not going over there to comment, and I’ll bet a lot of other people aren’t either.
Have you all noticed our new comrades-in-arms?
Check out FormerObamaSupporters.com.
Wonder when Kos and the other bloggy morons will stop being “hopenotized.”
Feel free to write to Neil’s show and let them know how you feel about that kind of hackery: Cavuto@foxnews.com
Why the EVERLOVING FUCK is Obama even ALLOWED to make that fucking decision as to whether or not to “allow” her name on the fucking ballot?!!?!?!?!? Can someone just answer that?!
Christ on a fucking CRUTCH. FUCK this fucking tyrant wannabe. He is motherfucking EVIL. No fucking WAY IN HELL is McCain the worse choice this year.
Janis – There is no more Democratic Party. It is Obama For America now.
That is…unless we do something about it. PUMA!
Hillary-zilla, I’m aware of that. We all are. So far, Hillary has given no indication that she isn’t. She is as aware of the precedent as anybody, and of the tradition. She knows that there is more to be lost in her NOT having her submitting than doing so.
Janis, please tell us what you really think!
“Tyrant wannabee” is right.
Regency, I’m not entirely sure. I’ve said it before, but I think the filthy-rich of this nation have finished sucking the blood out of the limping near-dead husk of the Republican party, and they’ve just switched hosts, like any good parasite does when it wants to survive after killing its first host.
The Democratic party IS the new party of the Murdochs of the world and the news media, and the banks and the financial world, and the Chicago power brokers.
They switched hosts. And when they latch on for good in August, there will be no liberalism left in the US at all. None. Dead. Finished, never to return.
And my fucking stupid-ass smug liberals friends with their gardening fetishes and their cloth supermarket bags and their hybrid cars will become fucking fascists without putting up a struggle, making so much as a peep, and without even realizing what happened.
From whining up a storm about stolen elections in 2000, they have begun spinning threadbare excuse after threadbare excuse about FL and MI. From whining on their blogs nonstop about the Bush administrations attacks on the Constitution, they have already started excusing Barky’s lube-free assfucking of the 4th amendment. From pissing and moaning about how “fascist” it was that no one could criticize Bush out loud, they have already begun defending the silencing of Barky critics using any means necessary. They are a bunch of fucking pathetic hypocrites whose pissing and whining about ANYTHING is now entirely unworthy of my attention. I never want to talk politics again with any of them because I just won’t be able to hide my utter contempt. Now I know how fascism gets started, adn this must have been what it looked like from the other side in 1980. It’s fucking nauseating. There’s some fucking STUPID-ASS smart people in this world.
madamab,
Just a quick shout out to you. I see you over at TalkLeft a bunch, and we are usually trying to say the same stuff.
You rock!
Madamab, I’m a PUMA only because I can’t be forced to say that there are five lights. I just can’t. My head doesn’t work that way.
But I’m not going to kid myself and think that anything can be done, either. We’re all going down the shit chute on this one, but at least I won’t be stupid enough to refuse to acknowledge it and pretend we’re on the rainbow-colored, rose-scented playground sliding board to Munchkinland.

“Barky’s lube-free assfucking of the 4th amendment”
janis PLEASE tell me you’re going to be in Denver!
The dumbest people in the world know how smart they are.
Hillary has 5 weeks, to make a decision.
“More disturbing, however, is when they project their own racist fantasies onto us. ”
I remember when these same folks where in an absolute uproar over a Drudge-originated picture of BO that was (horrors!) DARKENED!!! I couldn’t figure out then why they were so upset about it — would BO be a lesser person if his skin were darker than it is? That smacks of racism to me, like back in the forties when Lena Horne was acceptable and could be allowed to portray a realistic character on screen, but Hattie McDaniels was only allowed to be cartoonish (although she sure did manage to let her human dignity shine through anyway), based on the shades of their skin.
The KKK-types aren’t going to support any candidate that is in any way, shape, or form, black. The non-racist is going to judge a candidate by his record and stand on issues, not matter what color his skin is. It is the closet racists who are prepared to follow a “black” candidate if he is, in Joe Biden’s words, “clean” and “articulate,” and if he is bi-racial. It appears that to many of his white acolytes, Obama can only be the new messiah if he is half-white. I think that’s offensive. I think it’s offensive, too, when these people defend Bernie Mac’s inappropriate jokes (which might be funny in a club act, but were outrageous at a political fundraiser) and Obama’s pathetic reaction by saying “that’s just black humor.” It’s a patronizing, condescending attitude, which goes back to the days when black adults were treated as children.
But what do I know. I’m just a bitter, clinging, low-information, middle-aged, female midwesterner who’s been subscribing to the New Yorker for the past 25 years.
regencyg,
that’s why Hillary told her supporters that she needs to pay off her debt. AFAICS the debt or some good appointments plus adopting her positions on some core issues are the only carrots Obama or the DNC have.
if she has not debt, the only reason for her to remove her name would be getting appointments for her supporters (unless she wants something like SCOTUS or AG but i don’t think she does) and Obama to push her policies. otherwise, why would she do that?
(i don’t understand why Obama thinks its a good idea anyway. it will piss many of her supporters off even more and is likely to alienate some ppl who aren’t particularly strong supporters bc it is disrespectful to Clinton AND HER MILLIONS OF SUPPORTERS and flies in the face of tradition. it also reinforces the criticism about Obama’s hubris. given his coronation at Invesco Field despite the Dem’s needing funds, that’s already a PR problem for him.)
has anyone heard how much Hillary raised this month? i’ve heard the Will Bower figure for the July 4th weekend but nothing more recent.
Naah — am flying to the UK in a few weeks, and then I need to get back to work. Besides, I’m not up for being teargassed or get the shit beaten out of me by a bunch of people who will justify it by saying I’m a Klan member anyhow and consequently deserve it.
I worry about those who are going — they will be damaged or they will be shunted off into a “free speech zone” approximately 5′ x 5′ with a total media blackout for a 500′ radius.
I just don’t see this doing any good — the only thing left to do is vote for McCain, I think. I’m a PUMA, definitely — I’m not going to watch my country get flushed down the crapper and tell myself we’re all on a rainbow-colored slide to Paradise. I can’t force myself to see five lights. My head’s not built like that.
But I’m also not going to kid myself that we’re NOT circling the drain. It hurts to see it, but the only thing that hurts worse is lying to myself. There is nothing more painful and corrosive than lying to oneself.
At this point, I think we’re like Winston Smith — the only victory we have left is to die hating them. Shouldn’t be hard.
The DNC has 5 weeks to twist Hillay’s arms.
I hate the magazine cover, don’t find it amusing at all. But what is even worse, is that this magazine cover comes right after Jesse Jackson tells the world that Obama has uncategorically thrown black men under the bus. Now people will see this satirical cover and get all pissy over how bad BO is being treated. I have to question sometimes if Barry O doesn’t set this crap up.
Pat, ah yes, forgot Murdoch.
Roar, Janis, roar!

brava!
the only thing i’d add is Obama’s pandering to the right by promising to destroy many other parts of the Constitution, i.e., Article II, the 1st Amendment, the 2nd Amendment, the 8th Amendment, the 10th Amendment, and the Due Process Clause.
but i wouldn’t say it as clearly as you have here. thank you.
And Janis’ “host” thesis is spot-on.
I’m hoping this signifies open season on the baby Jesus.
regencyg,
if Hillary has no debt, how are they going to twist her arms? what leverage do they have?
Daniel Haysbert (the true first black president) is doing one of his All State Insurance commercials. In it he said, “If this isn’t a recession, it feels like one.” Damn straight. Tell it to that fraud with the tres passe presidential seal.
Q. Does anyone have a link for the Heidi Li interview on Fox this afternoon? I was in transit from work to errand, and missed it. Really appreciate your help.
Also, RE: Fox News – didn’t know Murdoch had endorsed Obama, but that would be one explanation. The other: they’re afraid that if they criticize BO too much, and his poll numbers go down, they might help Hillary, who still has a shot at the nomination.
Make sense to you all, too?
Here’s a link to Heidi’s interview:

Thanks to NewIndyCal at bitterpoliticz for finding it.
Janis, I love you almost as much as Eddy.
I never heard anyone say Fuck until I was almost 22 years old. I was standing in the hangar at the old Denver Airport while in training as a FA. One of the girls who soon quit to become a 6th grade school teacher, said the word………….I almost fell face down onto the cement floor.
When I came out of shock, and went back home to Texas to my Husband and family, it was already my favorite word.
My born again, wild in her youth, sister nearly passes out ever time I say it. Needless to say, she spends a lot of her time around me “blacked out” (no racism intended).
You go girl.
PUMA$ Who Donate Rule!
I knew I still loved the Ragin Cajun! He was on CNN debunking the outrage. Says satire is satire. Get over it. Of course they had him up against Bill Bennett who was “outraged” on behalf of the Obama.
Then I turned over to Headline News where some black columnist named Keith Boykin was just in a twizzle over there. Said that (paraphrasing here) he has never seen a candidate treated as badly in the press as Obama. I almost lost my supper! Victimhood, victimhood.
The last thing I saw was a crawl at the bottom of the screen where the world’s oldest blogger was dead at the age of 108. I just moved up a notch!
sassysenora,
They’re going to threaten her friends and they’re going to appeal to her sense of Schoonity. It’s mostly going to be that first thing though. If she can see that her friends are all right, she’ll fight this. If the challengers–and there has to be several–seem to be gaining ground on her incumbents, she might bend for them.
It just depends a lot on what her friends are saying behind closed doors.
I never heard that “word” until my wedding night.
Carol: *&^%$# *&^%*()@
Here’s a link to Heidi’s interview:

I’ve been saying Fuck since at least 6th grade.
GARY, YOU’RE EXACTLY RIGHT.
Thank you. I actually read the post myself and was completely appalled at how offensive it was, but I remain on strike from that site. Are there any other offensive racial stereotypes that dKos writer carries around in his own mind that we need to know about? I didn’t need to know about any of them.
That’s a neat trick how he’s able to say all the rac!st stuff he wants and blame the New Yorker artist for making him do it. Is there a name for this maneuver?
Also.. oh my god, Keith Olbermann is going to have a sh!t fit and fall back in it.
We have no idea what is going on behind those closed doors. That is what is so perplexing. We continue to second guess since there is nothing of substance coming back to us.
Don’t worry Pat, I just love him for his body!
*sigh* Hit that link up there. I did it wrong but it should go to the right place.
regency: I am giving you a choice of a cake of Irish Spring or Dove to take with you into the bathroom to wash out your mouth!!!
Hey! I’m legal, I can say it. I shouldn’t because it really isn’t in good taste in mixed company, but I’m allowed.
I prefer Yardley’s Lavender Soap really but it can be a bit expensive.
Thank you, regencyg. I’ll give a look. I read Heidi Li’s Potpourri every day to get clues on the Denver Group, etc. Noticed her “Bitter – It’s the New Brave” T-shirt, too. (”Bitter” characterization by pundits, etc. referring to Clinton supporters not supporter Obama).
Carville’s right. If nothing else, for strategic reasons they should really quit with the perpetual outrage. Ugh. Can you imagine FOUR YEARS of this crap? Laugh it off for crying out loud! I thought he was all about brushing this stuff of his shoulders? Apparently not.
Liberty Belle, instructions on how to find it:
Click on the video showing Joseph Petrowski on the home page. That will open another window called Top Videos/Latest videos. First on the bottom row should be the picture of Hillary.
Thanks NewIndyCal!
Someone has started this blog. I’m not sure what they really want to do with it except whine about how their candidate sold them out so easily.
If anyone has time, let them know what you think.

regencyg, are there challenges to Hillary supporters beyond the three Congressional races in NYC? and, even there, isn’t Clarke running unopposed in the Dem primary? if so, that’s two ppl – Towns and Meeks.
what can the DNC or Obama do about those races anyway? i don’t see what they can threaten/promise WRT Congressional races beyond running primary candidates against them. and AFAICS the ship’s already on the high seas for any 2008 primaries. (besides, Congressional races are generally more dependent on local factors than anything Obama or the DNC can do.)
i wouldn’t trust any Obama promise about what he will do later.
i don’t see the leverage here.
sassysenora, I don’t know who Hillary’s supporters are beyond the ones inmy district–Sheila Jackson-Lee in particular–and she’s definitely got a challenger.
The original threat was that they’d choke their fundraising and DNC staffing, etc, but since they’ve done that to all downticket dems, that may not hold as much water also. Also, I’d imagine the DNC could just endorse the opposing candidate. They have put up challengers claiming these people are out of touch. Moneyed challengers who are absorbing local support. These are people who outright endorse Obama and never waver, unlike the people who endorsed Hillary but switched and are still feeling the burn.
Obama’s word is crap, we know that. The leverage is the pressure. If her friends think that her still being in the race hurts them, they’ll lean on her to go. If she believes them, and believes that the cons outweigh the pros, she won’t submit her name. If she believes she can counteract the damage by raising money for them directly, and that the chances of her winning are great enough that it’s worth it, she’ll do it anyway.
The leverage is the pressure. It will be up to her to decide how much is too much.
Mawm: I went to the blog. Not sure either whom they hope to attract. We can all make the same arguments over and over again but other than that, it is just another blog.
Barava Janis!!! The parasite/host behavior to describe the political scene is so right on it makes my teeth ache!
Excellent post, Gary. Excellent.
Janis, you are awesome.
regencyg,
i don’t think the DNC is likely to endorse. if they did, there would be a backlash since they traditionally stay out of primaries. and given their PR problems with the Dem base, i don’t think they’d do something that controversial bc it would piss off too many ppl.
the Obama camp (not the DNC) has put up some challengers but that’s already done. (that’s part of what i was referring to when i said that ship’s on the high seas.) no argument that Obama is trying to hurt SDs who endorsed Clinton. but i don’t see how Clinton dropping out is going to affect that. do you think Obama will pressure them to drop out? (i don’t.) lean on his donors to not support them? (i don’t see that either but i don’t live in those districts so i’m not ruling that out.) what is the gain?
in order for there to be leverage (or pressure or whatever you want to call it), there has to be a substantial gain to her or her supporters by her taking her name out. i don’t see that. i don’t think voters will vote for or against someone (or give them money, etc.) based on whether Clinton has her name in nomination. anyone who would do that has already decided which candidate s/he’s supporting.
but i found out that ppl can still file to run in the Dem congressional primaries in NY, HI, VT, DE, PR, DC, and the VI. In NY, ppl can file until 7/17. in VT, HI, and DE, they can file until 7/21. 22, and 25 (respectively). so she may be waiting until after the filing deadlines there.
Janis–you are my hero. Thank you for so eloquently expressing every contemptuous thought that ever crossed my over-worked, over-tired, over-budget, and over-40 mind.
Regency,
I can’t find Heidi’s interview on that link.
garychapelhill, on July 14th, 2008 at 3:12 pm Said: mass–what I don’t understand is how they can rationalize using racist imagery to fight racism–I really don’t get it….bboomer, are you here? I need a psychologist/psychiatrist stat!
Gary I think George Carlin had the answer to your question, as he had the answer to so many things. Two Carlin bits of wisdom explain the idiocy of the using racism to decry racism.
1.Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity.
2.By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth.
Put the two together and it explains how some moron can rationalize racist imagery to fight racism. THEY ARE DUMB.
Scott, I took a look at the Boston Globe blog you mentioned. (http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2008/07/new_yorker_cove.html).
You estimated about half the comments thought the cover represents truth about the Obamas. But I counted them and came up with only 5% of the 350 comments there now. There is always going to be a 5% lunacy fringe, satire or no satire.
The 5% were all people who obviously already reveled in these beliefs and never going to vote for Obama anyway. A typical comment was: “Hahahaha!! Barack HUSSEIN Obama true colors shine forth! ”
There was not a single comment to indicate someone had been influenced toward racism by the New Yorker. There was no comment along the lines of: “I’ve been wondering if these rumors about the Obamas were true, and it seems the New Yorker is trying to tell us they are.”
Maybe you happened to see a cluster that made it seem there were more than there were.
I sure agree with your following statement: “Barely 1 in 20 recognized the cover for the satire it’s supposed to convey. It’s sad proof of the intellectual depths to which American society has fallen.”"
Isn’t the New Yorker part of the Conde Nast group? The same group as Vanity Fair? The mag that gave us that nice take on Bill Clinton around about Porto Rico time.
I just feel this whole cover business plays into BO’s hands. It takes away attn from the bio “making it”, and it also gives the whole campaign a chance to express outrage at so called racism. When that happens a whole load of CASH suddenly starts flowing their way…
just my 2cents, and yes, I agree with Janis.
