Obama wants our votes, not our civil rights. NO DEAL!!!

MAWM and I were at the NYC Gay Pride Parade a little over a week ago, and did our best to remind our LGBT brothers and sisters that Barack Obama is no friend to our community.  Here’s MAWM trying to get out the message:

Surprisingly we were the only ones there that we saw that were trying to hold Obama accountable for his two-faced approach to dealing with the LGBT community.  You see, he wants us to vote for him (where else are we gonna go?), but he also wants to pander to religious extremists who not only oppose civil rights like marriage, but think that they can cure us.  Obama has been talking out of both sides of his mouth on this issue for years now.  Another thing I noticed was the absence of anyone at the Pride Rally representing the Obama campaign.  Guess his frat boy campaign staffers didn’t want people to even think they might be gay.

Obama recently said that he is opposed to the proposed amendment to California’s constitution making marriage between one man and one woman.  But what has he said about marriage in the past?

“I believe that American society can choose to carve out a special place for the union of a man and a woman as the unit of child rearing most common to every culture.”

-Obama, in The Audacity of Hope

“I don’t think marriage is a civil right.”

-Barack Obama during the Illinois Senate debate, 2004.

So all of a sudden he has seen the light on this issue?  Forgive me if I don’t believe a word that comes out of either side of his mouth.  His serial pandering and lies have become quite open lately, with flip-flops on FISA, and Iraq, not to mention his abrupt swing to the right on issues like abortion and the death penalty.  My prediction?  If California ends up becoming a close race, I can see Obama either reversing his position, or, more in line with Obama’s style, saying that he believes it is up to the people of California and will honor their decision.  Anything that allows him to take no real position on the issue.

During the primary Obama went as far as he could without totally committing himself to civil rights for gays.  He said that he supported civil unions, but not marriage.  However his statement on the California Supreme Court’s decision allowing gay marriage seemed to contradict that From MSNBC:

Obama’s campaign issued a statement saying, “Barack Obama has always believed that same-sex couples should enjoy equal rights under the law, and he will continue to fight for civil unions as President. He respects the decision of the California Supreme Court, and continues to believe that states should make their own decisions when it comes to the issue of marriage.”

So if he opposes gay marriage in favor of civil unions, why does he support the Supreme Court decision making gay marriage legal in CA?  In fact, Obama has been quite vocal on this decision in the past:

“I’m a Christian, and so although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman,” he said in 2004 on Chicago TV station WBBM.

He told gay rights supporters in Iowa last year, “You want the word ‘marriage,’ and I believe that the issue of marriage has become so entangled, the word ‘marriage’ has become so entangled with religion, that it makes more sense for me as president, with that authority, to talk about the civil rights,” rights that would come from civil unions.

So which is it Barack?  How can you have such a firm stance on “marriage” based on your religious conviction and NOT support the proposed amendment making marriage between a man and a woman…just as you suggested?  He’s either lying to the gays or the christians, and I don’t think its the christians.

And I am sick and tired of Obmabots bringing up DOMA which keeps states from recognizing gay marriages performed in states where it is legal.  Many of them, during the primary, pointed to Bill Clinton’s signing of this bill as a reason that Obama was better on gay rights than Hillary.  Regardless of the actual history of the bill, it was insulting enough to suggest that Hillary and Bill were one entity, not to mention that personal and cultural feelings toward gay marriage might have changed in the last 12 years.  I wonder if Obama objected to DOMA at the time it was passed?:

Obama also said in late 2003 that he was against repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. But he switched his view on that question early in 2004 and said he would work to repeal DOMA.

Obama has said he is opposed to same-sex marriages, but he has not explained why he also opposes measures to ban them.

Well, forget about “at the time”, as recently as 2003 he was in agreement with it.  He changed his stance, but by that time Hillary was firmly opposed to the law as well.  So once again it was Obama following Hillary’s lead on a major issue, this time civil rights.

But what about McCain?  He must be rabidly anti-gay, right?  Well it turns out he and Obama aren’t that much different on the issue:

Both McCain and Obama have said they believe the states should decide their marriage policies. Both men have said they support civil unions, rather than full-fledged legal marriages between same-sex couples.

Both men voted against the proposed amendment to the United States Constitution in 2006 that would have defined marriage as only between one man and one woman.

In fact, during the debate on the issue, McCain was one of the most vocal opponents of the amendment:

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona broke forcefully with President Bush and the Senate GOP leadership Tuesday evening over the issue of same-sex marriage, taking to the Senate floor to call a constitutional amendment that would effectively ban the practice unnecessary — and un-Republican.

When it comes to gay rights, I concede that McCain has done more than his fair share of pandering to the religious right, especially in his primary battle.  But when you look at the company that these men keep, it certainly gives you a better idea of where their hearts and minds really are.  First of all, McCain:

I remember McCain telling me during an interview in the mid-1990s about how a gay member of his staff sensitized him to the issue. When he ran for president in 2000, he won the endorsement of the Log Cabin Republicans. The Advocate calls him “notoriously pro-gay.” In 2004, McCain was one of only six Republican senators to vote against the Federal Marriage Amendment, and after a Massachusetts court affirmed gay unions, he took the position that states could decide their own marriage laws without federal help.

What about Obama.  Surely he can do better than the Republican nominee when it comes to gay rights, can’t he?  I mean, we are some of the most loyal Democratic voters in the party.  Let’s take a closer look.  First there was this statement from the McClurkin episode in SC:

Hildebrand then talked about how Obama is “a different kind of politician” who often talks with the African-American community about how “there needs to be less bigotry, there needs to be more of a working relationship, you know, more acceptance of a lot of African-Americans who do not agree with the gay lifestyle. There was a time where [Obama] repeated that we’ve got to do better – that my own black community needs to do better. And he does not hesitate to do that.”

Umm, Mr. Obama, I’m gay, not my lifestyle.  If you even bothered to do any cursory examination of our community you would know that “gay lifestyle” has long been used to indicate that we “chose” to be gay, rather than born that way.  And then there are his “pastor problems”; McClurkin and Meeks.  Meeks has long served as counselor to Obama:

Described in a 2004 Chicago Sun Times article as someone Barack Obama regularly seeks out for “spiritual counsel”, James Meeks, who will serve as an Obama delegate at the 2008 Democratic convention in Denver, is a long-time political ally to the democratic frontrunner.

When Obama ran for the U.S. Senate in 2003, he frequently campaigned at Salem Baptist Church while Rev. Meeks appeared in television ads supporting the Illinois senator’s campaign. Later, according to the same Chicago Sun Times article, on the night after he won the Democratic primary, Sen. Obama attended bible study at Meeks’ church ‘for prayer’ and ‘to say thank you.’

Since that time, not only has Meeks himself served on Obama’s exploratory committee for the presidency and been listed on the Obama’s campaign website as one of the senator’s ‘influential black supporters’, but his church choir was called on to raise their voices in praise at a rally the night Obama announced his run for the White House back in 2007.

So who is he? From the Southern Poverty Law Center:

The Rev. James Meeks is a key member of Chicago’s “Gatekeepers” network, an interracial group of evangelical ministers who strive to erase the division between church and state. A stalwart anti-gay activist, Meeks has used his House of Hope mega-church to launch petition drives for the Illinois Family Institute (IFI), a major state-level “family values” pressure group that lauded him last year for leading African Americans in “clearly understanding the threat of gay marriage.”…

Meeks and the IFI are partnered with Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council and the Alliance Defense Fund, major anti-gay organizations of the Christian Right. They also are tightly allied with Americans for Truth, an Illinois group that said in a press release last year that “fighting AIDS without talking against homosexuality is like fighting lung cancer without talking against smoking.”

And Donny McClurkin, who headlined a “gospel tour” with Obama back during the SC primary?

Here we have a presidential candidate at a concert that this campaign put on with one of the singers preaching about the suffering that is homosexuality and how we can all pray-away-the-gay, and this candidate isn’t a Republican. He’s a Democrat.

This is proof enough that we aren’t invited into Obama’s big tent. Sure, we can go in there, but we’re going to have to put up with attacks on our identity while everyone cheers on.

And finally, although a bit off topic, I found this bit of information while researching this post that our dear sweeties might take a gander at when they scream about SCOTUS and that we will have the blood of back alley abortions on our hands:

But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations.” This wasn’t a fluke comment—McCain said the same thing more than once.

It is hard to believe, but for many of us, it is not about holding our nose to vote for McCain, but voting for him because he is the more progressive candidate.

  1. I find this website amazing !! The brillance, dedication and actions make me proud to be a PUMA !!

I applaud you from Oakland, CA !! I hope all my fellow LGBT peeps get the word out that barry is a fraud !!

  2. Excellent post, but what made you think that you would be invited into the big tent? You’re old coalition, and therefore under the bus with the rest of us.

  3. What is new here? Obama is a homophobe. He belonged to an anti-gay, anti-white folk church for 20 years. In fact some say he is gay, but there is no evidence of that.

I hear that AA are more anit-gay than any other group. Particulary men. But gay men may find Obama attrative so they may believe what they wnat to believe just like all the Obots.

  4. Well this B of the LGBT was never fooled. Get rid of this cipher. He is not what anyone thinks he is.

Gary, please send this out everywhere. We want all our LGBT allies to know that Barack Obama is no friend of theirs. I can’t believe it, but John McCain is a better friend to us. No one beats Hillary, but McCain is better than the other guy.

  5. NH, most of us do not use our genitalia when deciding who to support for president. That is an old stereotype (used against women before us, as many homophobic stereotypes are) that we are hyper-sexualized animals whose actions are generally based on our sexual desire.

  6. NH, I’m a woman with heterosexual leanings and that mofo isn’t attractive enough to get my vote. As much as I may like any man (especially men like Bill Clinton) I’d never give him a vote or a dime if he was this indecisive and this incompetent.

  7. regency, I would love for you to go back and read my post on why hillary is the best friend to the LGBT community (I don’t remember you being around then)…I didn’t include her here because I had covered it in that post, and I really wanted to concentrate on Obama’s shortcomings.

  8. Gary, I read it. It was great.

  9. gary: Thanks for allowing us into your life. As a parent of a gay child I know firsthand the evil of exclusion. I love my son with such fierceness that it pains me when I see discrimination so blatantly practiced and condoned. For anybody. I feel deeply about this and applaud both you and Mawm for your willingness to fight the good fight.

Obama is a coward. No two ways about it. If he only showed some guts on this one issue alone he may have had a slight chance to at least consider him in November. As it stands now, I would never trust him on any issue.

You guys make me proud! Believe it. I admire your passion and commitment to all things in the name of justice. Don’t mean to ramble, but know that your words and actions have impact. Thanks!

  10. Once again, please enumerate one Democratic principle that Obama has stood up for in the past.

    [cricket cricket cricket]

This whole issue of gay marriage is so ridiculous. I mean, all we have to do is give civil unions the same LEGAL RIGHTS as marriage. (They already do in some states. After all, hubby and I are considered “married,” yet we were hitched at the Justice of Peace in NY.)

Then, let the bigoted, homophobic churches thunder away at how wrong, wrong wrong it is for two people who love each other to commit to each other for life. It won’t take anything away from the LEGAL RIGHTS of the LGBT community.

If they can’t move into the 21st century, then let them and their followers remain in the 13th, where they are obviously more comfortable. No skin off our noses.

  11. I am so damn tired of the left caving in on this issue. To me it’s, what issue? Who is against any citizen of this country having the same damn rights as any other citizen. Period. In my mind it’s that simple. Or maybe it’s just my simple mind.

The left caves in order to pander to religious bigots.

The left caves in order to pander to war-monger and/or fearful conservatives and soccer mom types.

The left is against the war but continues to fund it so folks won’t think our military personnel will have to hitch-hike home or use their credit card to buy ammo.

The left allows the constitution to become just a GD piece of paper ala G W.

Now what exactly is the reason that we should vote for Democrats? Confuses the hell oughta me.

  12. Have you noticed that most “homophobe” types have homosexual tendancies or are actually gay?

Take for example, FBI’s J. Edgar Hoover. He used the FBI to go after homosexuals, yet was a one himself.

More and more, as time goes on and I read through Larry Sinclair’s claims that he had sex and drugs with BO, it’s beginning to look like he’s been telling the truth all along. The only reason he’s not dead yet is because of the murder of 3 other gay men in Chicago, who also knew Barry and it would look awfully suspicious if Larry Sinclair came up dead too.

The more you learn about BO, the more it scares the sh__t out of me that he is so close to the White House!

    Go PUMAs!

  13. We have lost sight of our priorities, Marge. The “common good” has been co-opted by bigots and the corporations who fund them. You can feel the elevator drop a little more when one of them opens their mouths.

  14. Someone please clarify for me exactly what just went down in the FISA vote.

  15. regency: Nothing yet as far as I know. Turn on C-Span to see if they are still speaking from the well. I have to go out for awhile and will check in when I return.

  16. By the way, Planned Parenthood has endorsed Obama. Do you hear that sound? It’s your uterus being confiscated.

  17. Not to mention that McCain actually pays his female staffers “male” salaries and promised that he’d employ 50% women on his staff if he becomes president.

It’s amazing that the republican beats the democrat on equal rights – are you certain you haven’t seen some flying pigs over there?

  18. B,

I did eat some bacon recently. Oddly, it had feathers in it. I thought we’d just stored it too close to the hot wings.

  19. Keep an eye out folks, final FISA vote is at 215 EST.

  20. B, I looked and looked to see if Obama had a significant number of gay campaign staffers…I couldn’t find any except his LGBT outreach person, who surprisingly is not trying to sell gays on his positions, but rather registering them to vote…I guess he counts on us blindly voiting democrat as always. Anyone who did any work for hillary knows that a very large portion of her regular staff were gay. At least they were here in NC…

  21. Gary, you are GOOD. That’s why I and thousands others Love this site – y’all don’t just make accusations, you have very sound data, hours of reseach, and painstaking sources backing up every hypothesis you make.

And yes, McCain is definitely the more sensible of the two, the more humane. I don’t want to call him ‘liberal’ or ‘progressive’ and risk alienating his Republican voters, because by now I really want McCain to win in November if he’s running against O-blah-blah.

  22. Little by little Big Mac is lookin’ better. I have to say I find it very appealing when a candidate advocates for their causes – refreshing in’ it? Who knew that he would be advocating for and acting on equal pay and equal employment? I’m trading in the unity pony for the flying pig.

  23. Any word yet on whether we’re having another HRC donation drive?

  24. I’ve said and will still say to anyone who wants to hear it that McCain will surprise us by being more to the left than we think, and Obama will surprise us by being more to the right.

McCain is already a moderate, and he’s a cranky old fuck who doesn’t like being manipulated, plus he’s an old fuck period who isn’t likely to pursue reelection and hence is more likely to be the kind of president he wants to be without kowtowing to anyone in particular. He will surprise us all, should we be lucky enough to avoid going under the wheels of the Obama juggernaut.

God, I lost so much respect for people I thought were a lot smarter than they turned out to be this election season, really close friends of mine to whom I can’t even talk about this anymore. It’s really hard. Some women I thought were so bright and together ended up just going, “he’s black, so it’d be cool,” or else just continued maknig excuses for the smooth-talking guy in the suit because they are on the husband or bed-partner hunt and are looking to talk a sow-s ear into a silk purse in their personal lives as well. Admitting that this guy is blowing up their skirts requires that they be more honset about their own manhunts. It’s really sick.

  25. janis, ain’t that the truth. There are so many women I knew, family members at that, that are for BO for no good reason. They can’t articulate a reason except that we need a change. Yikes, it’s disgusting.

  26. Gary, I would suspect the staffing is like so many other things obama – he doesn’t want any way to be pinned down. I’d guess he was afraid if there were openly gay staff members, he wouldn’t be able to tack right when the wind changed direction.

No matter what reason he might have, any time we don’t support the rights of ALL people, we can’t protect our own. I think gay marriage should be legal in all states because it is the right thing to do. Retirement, Social Security, survivorship, hospital visits, property… there are so many rights afforded married couples (effortlessly) that should be extended to all committed adult relationships through a legal marriage.

  27. misogyny and homophobia go hand in hand, in my opinion, and so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that such homophobia exists from a camp that ran such a sexist campaign. That’s why accusations of racism are so infuriating…coming from people whose own bigotry is justified by their support of the “cool black guy”–and I put that in quotes because I take it directly from a pro-obama diary at MyDD. I’m sick of it, and any gay person who supports this creep is either stupid or completely lacking of any self-respect.

  28. Gary, the one lesbian I know who is supporting him is doing so from massive parental issues (dawg save this country from people with massive parental issues).

Her whole life is a giant tantrum against her evangelical parents, so this election gave her a heaven-sent opportunity to kill Mommy and to get her fill of “falling to the gruond and speaking in tongues,” which is sitll her first language whether she wants to admit it or not.

The fact that she’s lesbian neamsn very little to her compared to the chance to kill Mommy on a national scale. She simply doesn’t care.

And I’ve met more than my share of sexist gay men as well, unfortunately since we are definitely hated for exactly the same reason. Gay men are on the whole the least sexist men I’ve ever encountered, but you do run into the odd one here and there who finds in his homosexuality only more reasons to ignore women. *sigh*

  29. Plus, for the gov’t benefit – you would qualify for the marriage penalty on your taxes!

I really wonder how much the resistance to gay marriage has to do with property, social security and pension survivorship/inheritance, it seems all regressive stances end up being about money. Why else would anyone care?

  30. I wish people would stop comparing him to Deval Patrick, including Patrick himself. Sure, he’ll likely be as ineffectual as Patrick in most regards. But Patrick is a civil rights expert and crusader. Deval Patrick and our Speaker of the House, Demasi, lobbied hard to ensure a ballot initiative on our own marriage equality didn’t get placed on the ballot. It would have only taken 25% of the House votes to get there. Patrick’s argument rightly was you do not put civil rights to a popular vote. Of course, you don’t. He reminded the Congress, and the people, that the civl right of an african american to marry a white, was once against the law. He said we must protect the minority.

By the way, I would argue this:

“I believe that American society can choose to carve out a special place for the union of a man and a woman as the unit of child rearing most common to every culture.”

isn’t true. That it’s probably nearly as common for a child to be raised by either just one woman or one man, most commonly one woman.

  31. “I believe that American society can choose to carve out a special place for the union of a man and a woman as the unit of child rearing most common to every culture.”

What does that mean? It’s two unrelated phrases.

  32. Elixir, on July 9th, 2008 at 1:04 pm Said: Any word yet on whether we’re having another HRC donation drive?

Let’s just plan one. How about Friday? That’s when a lot of people get paid. We can make it another fundraising weekend. Just like at the Cocktail Party, we can do a $5.00 cover charge and if you can’t pay others can agree to cover for you by donating $10.00 instead of $5.00

  33. “The only reason he’s not dead yet is because of the murder of 3 other gay men in Chicago, who also knew Barry and it would look awfully suspicious if Larry Sinclair came up dead too.

The more you learn about BO, the more it scares the sh__t out of me that he is so close to the White House!”

Kathleen, isn’t the corruption and poitics-related crime is much rougher and more prevelent in Chicago than most other USA cities right now? It almost seems like one big redone 1930s gangster movie, with current actors and technology.

I absolutely agree with all of you who say that the marriage between same-sex couples should be a non-issue in this day and age. But, if that were the case, if same-sex unions became supported by the government, that would unseal the deal that women are meant to serve and be subservient to men, and IMO that is the real show-stopper in the gay-rights show for the powers that be.

  34. Um, gay-rights issue with the powers that be.

  35. gay lifestyle? My God, what generation is this man from? I thought he was youth? What on earth is a gay lifestyle?

  36. regency…that’s a fantastic idea–a cover for the cocktail party….of course everyone is still welcome, but if anyone can’t afford it, somebody else could volunteer to “cover” them….I hope RD reads that one..

  37. According to CNN, Obama popularity decreasing. Hillary’s increasing.

    Bush approval rating 25%
    Congress 9%
    Pelosi 4%

  38. Gay lifestyle: shopping for groceries, going to work, cooking dinner.

Most gay men and lesbians I know wished that their sex lives were one tenth as exciting as the evangelicals seem to think they are.

  39. Pelosi 4%????

That is very encouraging. Bye-bye, Nancy!

  40. Now, how to lose Howie?

  41. Janis, on July 9th, 2008 at 1:32 pm Said:

Shit, that’s cool. I’m living a gay lifestyle.

  42. Heh. Two new posts already – one by me )(bumped from yesterday) and one by RD.

We all just have so much to say! :-)

  43. Karolina NYC, on July 9th, 2008 at 1:35 pm Said:

He’s already gone. That Obama thug has taken his place and will be the next chiar of the DNC. Dean will be going back to Vermont shortly following the election. Oh wait, he never actually left Vermont.

  44. Gary, great job as usual — thank you.

If BZero was a tenth of the human he proclaims these things wouldn’t even be on the horizon as issues. Hanging out with a guy who says, “You can pray the gay away,” is like Clyde saying he hung around with Bonnie because of her omelets. You know anything he says is a lie or in BZero’s vernacular a “refinement.”

I always thought BZero wouldn’t be good on LGBT issues, but I had no idea just how abysmal he was. Thank you for shedding more light on why fraud is to kind a word to describe him.

  45. I think gay lifestyle is just another word for “OMG icky gay sex” to conservatives like that. They just can’t say what they really feel without sounding unhinged.

  46. Really? He’s being retired “for good”? I thought that it Obie was main-dem-guy just till the November election. What happens then?

  47. Karolina, that’s how it usually works. The nominee sort of picks the next DNC chair, so unless he loses in November it’s going to be that guy he installed there.

  48. B, on July 9th, 2008 at 1:43 pm Said:

DING DING DING DING, we have a winnah!

When Bill Richardson said being gay was a “choice,” that was the death knell for his candidacy. Democrats are going backwards instead of forwards on this, and so many other issues.

It’s truly shameful and will have tragic consequences for our Party and our country.

  49. Pat – “Coward” is the best overall description of BO – he has no core values because it takes strength and stamina to form those values and not move away from them.

I stayed with my 84 year old friend this week in LA. I met her and her husband personally in July 1998 when they came to Dallas for the final stages of their son’s death from AIDS – a very close friend of mine. They loved and honored him every day of his life, and every day since his passing. No judging, just love and acceptance.

Too hell with him, Hillary will be our President!

    PUMA$ Who Donate Rock!

We can’t wait for Friday if her debt has to be paid by the 14th. We must start now!

  50. Karolina, that is EXACTLY IT. If women have the freedom to marry other women, they fear that they will be up to their noses in undone laundry, Campbell’s soup cans, and frozen waffle boxes.

It will never occur to them to learn how to cook and clean for their DAMNED SELVES.

  51. So what if it was a choice? Why shouldn’t people be allowed to choose who they want to sleep with?

  52. BINGO. Religion is a choice and discriminating on that basis is wrong. Race isn’t a choice, and discriminating on that basis is also WRONG.

DISCRIMINATING IS WRONG. That’s what it comes down to. So people really need to stop this bullshit of looking for the philosophical nooks and crannies where treating other people like garbage is okay. The only reason people would pursue that sort of search is if they are desperately looking for an excuse to shit on someone.

  53. Hahaha!

My friend Maria is marrried with a wife and two kids. The fantastic thing is that they are both blond and very pretty. She is always explaining how much better it is to be married to a woman – both take responsibility for what needs to be done.

  54. “Just like at the Cocktail Party, we can do a $5.00 cover charge and if you can’t pay others can agree to cover for you by donating $10.00 instead of $5.00″

    Regencyq,

Great mids think alike! Katiebird floated that idea at the cocktail party last night! A good idea–definately. I’m in….

  55. Joaniebone,

That’s where I got it from. It’s a great idea and I think we should use it when it’ll do the most good. Let’s clear out Hillary’s debt and free all of us to pursue further goals. Especially Hillary.

  56. WOW!!!!

It takes a LOT of courage to not only be out of the closet in our awful day and age, but to MARCH DOWN 5th AVENUE and protest the O-borg like that is a lesson in true activism.

Gary & Mawm you both are truly the Infantry Co-Commanders of the Rebel Alliance. I stand in awe of your courage.

Great article, have you posted it on Datalounge?

  57. I agree that all discrimination is wrong – I just think that the whole “gay lifestyle” thing is about pretending that people can choose who they’re attracted to.

If I could have chosen to be attracted to women, I probably would have done so. But somehow I can’t help wanting to have sex with men. What is WRONG WITH ME?!

And by the way, why can’t I choose to be attracted to a rich Wall Street type, who could keep me in the lifestyle to which I am, sadly, not accustomed?

  58. Naah, those rich guys roll over in bed on your 50th birthday, wonder why they’re with this old lady when they can have an underwear model, and then haul you to the impound lot and toss you in the crusher while they go looking at the next year’s models.

I’ve turned DOWN rich, goodlooking men for that reason — they all pulled that stunt with the women they wound up with.

  59. SM—did you notice MAWM’s PUMA tail? he he..we both had them on…I was actually marching down the sidewalk with a tail, similar t’shirt and a sign that said “Obama will sell us out to the evangelicals”….I got quite a few stares….and that’s saying something at a gay pride parade!

  60. madamab….it’s all right, I like to have sex with men too…guess we have the same affliction… :)

  61. I tried to read lesbian porn to see if I could become bisexual enough to fall for a woman. It didn’t work. :-(

Still, I think there’s something to the idea that we are all born bi. Growing up we then learn we have to be “ether-or”. I believe there are several studies showing how many avowed heterosexuals have gay experiences and I know the majority of gay people I know has tried hetero sex.

  62. garychapelhill and regencyg,

I don’t know why you have gotten defensive. I didn’t mean all gay men but I can see that my post didn’t clarify that. Some gay men may find Obama attractive, and some of those men will vote for him for that reason. They are Obots.

  63. As a straight woman I would rather have sex with Hillary…

  64. Great post and thank you MAWM for your efforts duing the pride parade. I live in SF and am gay but I have gay friends who refuse to face the facts about Obama and his homophobia. I talked with Gavin Newsome at Hillary’s HQ and he told me how Obama snubbed him and wouldn’t even take a picture with him. This man is a hypocrite and can’t be trusted. He will do and say anything for a vote.

    You go B.

  65. I’m sure the gay support for obama is not unlike the female support for obama. They aren’t taking a hard look at his statements and just watched MSNBC for help making an “informed” decision.

Anyone who voted for obama in the primary will need a BIG (BIG!!) turn-off to admit the wrong candidate got the nomination and they got suckered by a fancy marketing campaign. FISA might be the excuse they need to turn that corner.

  66. garyinchapelhill – LOL! We are similarly afflicted indeed.

Janis – good advice! I’ve gone with good-looking but not rich, and he’s older than me already. Working like a charm – I’m still his “younger woman!” LOL

B – I would rather have sex with Hillary than Obama too. That just shows how much I like Hillary – and distrust Obama.

Besides, at least HRC would be considerate. Obama would probably take a mirror to bed and preen himself during the entire interlude. ;-)

  67. Gary: PUMA TAILS!!! LOL!!!!!

I was wondering what the heck that thing was, I thought it was a long ribbon belt or something like the guy with the painted chest & white pants had a yellow ribbon on too, so I thought it was that. DUH!

  68. SM–what is datalounge?

  69. Mamadab – Exactly!

  70. B – I believe you are correct.

  71. Now that we have determined we would all rather……………….

Pony (and no Unity Pony’s Allowed) Up PUMA$ – Donate and Rock Hillary’s World!

  72. Look, in my younger days I went strictly for looks and charm. (I was much shallower in those days.) I ended up with 4 great looking kids who achieved their goals early in life and I did it practically single handed. The “good looks” invited many other women to share in my “good fortune” when hubby decided he could do better with Snow Bunnies. So marriage is a crapshoot either way.

I personally don’t care if someone pledges their undying love to a goat as long as they keep away from my rose bushes.

  73. carol, can you direct me to a link where I am sure my donation will go to retiring the debt?

  74. garychapelhill, I know you didn’t ask me, but HRC’s website now features a big “pay down the debt” contribute button on the first page.
The fine print at the bottom confirms it.

  75. josgirl–that’s surprising considering they’ve been in the tank for Obama… I have no respect for the HRC they totally dissed hillary, they have no plan to make marriage legal, and they threw the T in LGBT under the bus when it came to ENDA legislation. So how exactly are they working for us???? sorry, this is not directed at you jos, they just aren’t on my “good guys” list…

  76. OMG I just realized how stupid I am…by HRC I thought you meant Human Rights Campaign. I am SOOOO SORRY…. forgive me?

  77. Madamab, when I learned what those guys I’d turned down had done, it was a serious “There but for the grace of gawd” moment. Meanwhile, I see so many women talking a sow’s ear into a silk purse everywhere I turn … and assholes like Barky are the beneficiaries of it. Men like him know that if feminism ever really takes hold, they will lose every advantage they ever held over women.

I didn’t take offense. I don’t think I gave it any thought at all.

  79. Yes, Pelosi may be at only 4% approval rating, but we must all agree she brings a certain “freshness”.

    PUMA$ Who Donate Rock!

Fundraiser to retire the debt as officially begun on the last blog (Donna). Please Donate and post details over there, I am running the totals!

    Thanks so much.

  80. gary – I don’t know. Someone said the other day that if Hill Camp knows what we are trying to achieve, they will post a specific site page. I don’t know who it was!

  81. Obama is sexist and homophobic.

here’s the relevant excerpt of his sexism toward lesbians (from an article that discusses several issues):

In an LGBT Obama outreach call Friday (which openly gay Deputy Campaign manager Steve Hildebrand said included 1,200 participants), former Human Rights Campaign executive director Elizabeth Birch talked movingly about her pain and disappointment – not just at Clinton’s defeat and the complexities of having two role models for her two bi-racial children, but also from the perspective of the “scrappy 12 year old” she once was who dreamed of changing the world.

That resonated with a number of Hillary-supporting lesbians with whom I spoke later. “Was Elizabeth the only woman on the call?,” they asked. “Where are the lesbians in Obama’s campaign?”

This is more than just pained disappointment – it’s a belief that Obama is keyed into the A-Gay white boys network that still tends to – perhaps unconsciously but from a sense of entitlement – dismiss women.

Diane Abbitt, for instance, the first female co-president of the first political action committee – the Municipal Elections Committee of Los Angeles (MECLA) – was no fan of Obama or Clinton. She wound up supporting Clinton “based on her experience.” She said she has not heard from or about any lesbian in the Obama campaign. “From a very objective perspective,” she said, “I have to ask – where are the women? Where are the lesbians in Obama’s campaign?”
Abbitt was also among those who pointed out that Clinton twice referred to gay rights in her concession speech but Obama did NOT mention gays in his litany during his victory speech after winning the delegate count.

  82. PumaSF –

and that was after Newsome threw a big fundraiser for Obama. it’s like when he phoned in the fundraiser in NC or said he didn’t care if ppl attended another fundraiser because he wanted their money, not them.

even Willie Brown tried to get Obama to have his picture taken with Newsome. Obama has no class.

  83. Gary, thank you for reminding LGBT yellow-/blue-dog Dems of the ObamaHomoPhobia they do not want to think about.

Perhaps with the combined efforts of LGBTs whose water supply hasn’t been contaminated by Obama-Aid, we can get our brothers and sisters back on track.

Btw, I just voted up your vid on YouTube, and blogged your blog post.

    Keep at it, Gary!

  84. yeah, why would you be better off than women who have abortions when they get blue? or all the typical white persons? or the
working class, baby boomers, Apalachians, Hispanics, residents
of Fla & Mi? get under the bus where you belong! Donna said
you having civil rights would demean the Blacks’ civil rights
so they went out of the party platform!
And, seriously – thank you for informing the GLBT community
of how this election will affect them.

  85. I am having a very hard time understanding the support of Obama from the glbt community. I know its not all of them as I sure don’t support him. As a matter of fact, I have a “husband” that has to listen to me rant about Obama every single day after he gets home from work. He works very hard, doesn’t have time or energy to keep up so it took awhile for him to understand my problem with obama.

  86. I don’t know what Obama’s problem is. He attends a racist sexist homophobic church I am not sure if Obama likes anyone.

  87. What is Hill’s position on gay marriage? I did not hear her speak about that openly.

  88. [...] Obama on gay rights.  Yes, thank you, “Confluence,” for pointing out that Obama says he isn’t a fan of gay rights.  But that’s cheap [...]

  89. Jesus. You people need to chill the hell out. If you watch what Barack Obama says – what he REALLY says – he’s as pro-gay rights as they come. Fall the hell into line. We can’t afford to be disunited on this one.

  90. By the way, I too am as pro-gay rights as they come. I just recognize that Obama is playing the long game.

  91. Join us up on the open thread, Ames.

  92. fall the hell into line??

  94. This is just Barack NObama being Barack NObama. He does the same thing with my main issue too (I’m an antique and “curio and relic” handgun collector) saying out of one side of his mouth that he agrees with the Second Amendment (after the Hiller vs. Washington DC SCOTUS decision overturning the Washington DC handgun grab) but out of the other side of his mouth saying the Washington DC handgun grab was constitutional and supporting the UN gun control schemes in a round about way as a part of an “anti world poverty” bill.

I also am going to “out” myself here NOT as an LGBT but as a Republican who has supported John McCain from the beginning and not a P.U.M.A. (He was better than the other Rs running this election cycle, Only Ron Paul was better on the gun issue and he didn’t stand a chance.)
