Another Reverend problem for Obama?

Many Thanks to Sheri in comments for the report on the latest mailer from the Obama camp (I believe this is the link to her blog *UPDATE*–This is GRL’s blog*– if not, it is someone who got a similar letter):

There are 2 letters inside – one from the Rev. Joseph Lowery – having been described as a respected, electrifying reverend and who has been given many superior awards, one by NAACP naming him the Dean of the Civil Rights Movement. A good man, in other words. He walked with Rev. Martin Luther King from Selma to Montgomery. He praises BO – and all the change he’s going to bring to America.

I guess Obama wants to have a preacher on his side for once who is a “good guy”.  One who really has some civil rights movement “cred”.  Well, Mr. Lowery may have been such a person until he too was corrupted by this political season.  In case nobody remembers, it is Rev. Lowery who in January was one of the first to stoke the race-baiting fires.  His was, in my opinion, some of the most egregious of such race baiting in the lead up to the SC primary.  Does this ring a bell ?:

In an address to the Hungry Club at Butler Street YMCA in downtown Atlanta, the Rev. Joseph Lowery re-stoked the fires on Wednesday when he told the largely African-American audience that “a slave mentality” was fueling black doubts about Obama’s chances of capturing the White House.

The report comes from our AJC colleague, John Hollis, who was at the event.

“No matter how much education they have, they never graduated from the slave mentality,” Lowery said of those who have advised Obama to wait, or have doubted his ability to compete in a general election.

“The slavery mentality compels us to say, ‘We can’t win, we can’t do,’” said Lowery, an avid Obama supporter and a co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Pretty inflammatory rhetoric coming from someone who now wants to court our votes.   Basically Lowery was telling black people that unless they back Obama there is something psychologically wrong with them.  To support Clinton (or Edwards) is to have a slave mentality.  And who do you think is the “Master” in that allusion?  That’s quite an accusation from one who walked with the man who asked us to judge people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.

I have read that many people say his speech was “misinterpreted”.  They say he meant that in general the African American community still has a “slave mentality”.  I disagree.  Lowery is not only a preacher, but a shrewd politician.  The race baiting that occurred prior to the SC primary was calculated and coordinated and Lowery’s speech was perfectly timed to coincide with the smears of both Bill and Hillary.  The above speech was given on Jan. 16th.  The race baiting had begun in earnest during the first week in January when both the media and the press distorted quotes by Hillary and Bill (the MLK/LBJ and “fairy tale” quotes).   They needed something in between that and the primary on Jan. 26 to keep the innuendo that the Clinton’s were in fact racist in the air.  Lowery played the perfect role in doing just that.

But before anybody charges me with cynicism (I take the coming charges of racism for granted at this point) and that I am taking the reverend’s words out of context, I will be happy to provide some.  This is from a speech Rev. Lowery gave at UNC-Greensboro on January 17th, 2007:

Also… although I can’t remember exactly where it fit into his speech, the Reverend touched on political parties and political affilation. Of himself, he said, “I’m not a Republican and I’m not a Democrat… I’m a Methodist.” Of the political parties, in general, he stated, “One of ‘em takes us for granted and the other just takes us.” (emphasis mine)

So who’s the cynic, him or me?

  1. this is a complete system. if you’re white and don’t support obama, you’re a racist. if you’re black and don’t support obama, you’ve got a slave mentality.

and it was the clintons who injected race into this campaign?

  2. Somebody should let obama know that these preachers aren’t going to help so much with the Southern Baptists he is hoping to coax away from the Republicans.

  3. You know…they are going to go to this well one too many times (as far as I’m concerned they already have) and it’s all going to fall on deaf ears or someone’s going to say “and?” or whatever. It’s an insult to one’s intelligence when they used it against the Clintons of all people and it was one of the first things that had me against Obama.

They can call me whatever the hell they want and it’s still not going to result in my vote going to him. So it did a lot of good didn’t it?

  4. Who is Sherri?

    Thanks for the link, anyway!!

  5. sorry, GRL, her comment in the previous post looked a lot like the beginning of your post…sorry for the mix-up

  6. I don’t have any issue with AA’s voting for an AA candidate, nor would I object to women voting for a woman or LGBT voters voting for one of their own.

But when an AA argues that AA’s “must” support an AA, that’s racist, just as it would be if a Klansman argued that whites “must” support whites.

I judge people on the content of their character, not the color or their skin, their gender, sexual orientation, etc.

  7. Nader says Obama is “Appealing to White Guilt”

    DUH!

Maybe he can give me the PowerBall, Mega Millions, and Texas Lotto Numbers for this weeks winnings!

  8. I think the race-baiting was also punishment for Clinton staying in the race after Iowa. They had to cut her off at the knees, and taking her AA favorables from %90 to %60 did the trick.

I will never vote for this group of racist thugs. They are worse than the Republicans in most every way, because they have taken the principles of the Democratic party and completely trashed them. Now, we don’t have a party that represents the working class. It’s a party of AAs voting their skin color, Egg Heads voting their white-guilt trip, and Disenchanted Repubs and Indys voting their Bush guilt trip.

They can’t have us in the party, because we would be like a mirror to them, showing them how ugly they really are.

  9. Racism has been used as a handy excuse everywhere Senator Obama hasn’t won
It’s as if there’s a presumption that triumph for Mr. Obama is the natural order of things, and that when it doesn’t happen, evil has been afoot.
or as Gene Lyons puts it
    Many citizens who
would vote for an African American without a second thought are put off
by a candidate who makes race the central issue of his campaign. Winning
    tactic, losing strategy.

  10. myiq2xu,
sorry but I have a big problem with people who would vote based on race, gender, sexual orientation. That is the antithesis of MLK’s dream, and it should not be condoned.
I think that attitude is part of the minority victimhood entitlement.
Would you approve a white man voting for the white man because he was a white man?

If one good thing has come out of this primary for me, it is that I have completely let go of any liberal guilt I had. To me, affirmative action is wrong. Affirmative action is one of the reasons we are in the situation we are today. Continually highlighting and dissecting everything by race, and then creating a perceived debt that is owed a community has been harmful I believe.
When will the victimhood end? Michelle Obama had it a lot better than I did growing up, but in this society, I must have had it better, not because of my parents income(dirt poor), but because I was born white, and I get all the entitlements that go along with that. What entitlements? Will someone tell me? I know what they say, but I just don’t see it in real life.
Low income white people have a lot more in common with low income black people than they do with upper income whites. Race has been used to divide the middle class against itself, and now the Obama campaign is continuing in that time honored tradition. It is a disgusting thing to watch.

  11. So, according to Rev. Lowery, it’s the “slave mentality” that prompts distrust of all things Barack Obama and not the fact that I simply see him unqualified, petulant, lacking sound judgment and duplicitous — for starters? Heh, interesting. Learn something new about yourself everyday. Thanks Reverend Lowery for helping me see the light that is The One.

But, wait! I still feel an extreme aversion to this “light”! Help me, Rev. Lowery! How do I break these chains?!

    What a jacka$$!

  12. Actually, Mawm, you are spot on. Income level is much more of an equalizer than is skin color. Mrs. Obama was the beneficiary of much that affirmative action had to give. Any liberal white southerner guilt that I may have possessed has been nullified.

  13. “Low income white people have a lot more in common with low income black people than they do with upper income whites.”

MLK got murdered when he started saying stuff like this out loud. :-(

  14. More and more this is reminding me of the Bush administration’s drumbeat to invade Iraq. Then, if you dissented, it was “unpatriotic” or you were a “terrorist sympathizer”. With BO’s brigade, you’re “racist” if you’re not black and stricken with a severe case of “slave mentality” if you are. Mr. “57 states” is covering all his bases, eh?

  15. Might want to look at the Rev.’s sermon here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wykN-nYcqJs

    talks about Farrakhan and Phegler

  16. America has a history of racism that can’t be ignored just because we don’t like Barack Obama. What was real before is real now. I don’t have white guilt, but I do benefit from white privilege. The economic, social and educational disparities are real. But it is true that poor whites and poor blacks do have a lot in common with one another. That has been true since indentured servitude and slavery. We cannot let Obama polarize us; he’s a divider, because that’s how he conquers. Don’t let him do it!

Obama comes from immigrant stock like most white people. His black father was an African immigrant, not the descendant of slaves. He benefits, frankly, from not having the “badge” of slavery that so many African American still have to wear because of racism. He can be post-racial, as it were, because race is not his problem. I don’t know if that makes sense.

  17. Chimer – makes perfect sense to me.

  18. Or “Chimera ” I should say. :)

  19. My family was made up of rural farmers in NC, my GPA was 3.8 and they mortgaged some property to put me through school. To read MO’s dissertation, when she was accepted on affirmative action really pisses me off. Her family income at the time was $18,000 more a year than my families, and we had two more family members and I am supposed to feel guilty?

Also, it really worries me that if the supposition is made that anyone who does not vote for him is a racist; and he does not win the GE, will his loss be blamed on racism? How far will that setback race relations? And could this assumption cause really serious problems in the following days? Not going to say it, but I think you know what I mean.

It just seems this premise leaves the door open for an entire block of the voting population to believe, because this is what they have been told, that he did not win the GE due to his skin color.

  20. chimera:

“White privilege” only applies to white people who compete for jobs or other benefits with minorities, and are provided an advantage.

The only time in my life I “competed” with minorites was during military service, and I got no “privilege” because of the color of my skin.

  21. This article here talks about “privilege” somebody may have because of their race.

I had to read it recently for a class. For those not inclined to read the entire thing; essentially the author attempts to understand why many males do understand what advantages that they have due to their gender by trying to examine what advantages (she makes a list) she may have due to her race. Another part of the article is that “privilege” is invisible to those that have it, whether or not they have it.

  22. Mawm:

I’m just saying I wouldn’t criticize a minority group member for voting for someone who was in thier group.

  23. what a handicap. It is sad to believe you can’t win on your ideas, policy proposals and brain power. To know that you always need a handicap in order to compete.

The straw that broke the camel’s back for me was trashing the Clinton’s reputation–using right wing talking points and smearing them as racist. That was truly unforgivable, and especially coming from a Democrat.

  24. Janis:

The purpose of racism in the deep south (KKK) was to keep poor whites from unifying with blacks against the wealthy.

  25. myiq: That may be true; however, when you live in the south, you are led to believe that you are responsible for the oppression to begin with (i.e.: slavery). But the division is much evident in other regions. In the South, there may be some neighborhoods that are divided by race, but what I see is much more of an economic divide.

  26. I know for a fact in my industry, IT. If a black applicant is qualified, he is hired immediately, and he will be hired over the equally qualified white candidate, because companies are always trying to create a diverse work enviornment, and there are not as many qualified black applicants. I have seen this happen twice. I have never seen an unqualified black applicant get an IT job, however.
It doesn’t bother me that this happens, because I believe a diverse work enviornment is something to strive for, but what angers me is this supposed invisible “privilege” that I have. That Ryan refers to. I am supposed to believe that I have it even though I can’t see it, and I can’t see it because I have it.

I call major BS on that. Sounds like the type of educational system William Ayers is intent on building in Chicago.

  27. Ryan I am just not buying into the premise that I am somehow privileged because I am white. Just not gonna happen.

  28. Well I certainly don’t see how I have any privilege because I’m black.
Guess everybody’s got a beef if they want one.

  29. How the h*#$ can someone be praised for all the change they are going to bring, especially when they haven’t explained exactly what their f*%#^@! planning to do, and which hogwash they have already fed the masses are just “necessary” lies.

  30. I am running for president (or more rightly, chairperson) of my Monthly Book Club. Should I ask my priest to come with me to the next nominating meeting and stand by my side?

It is important that I get an answer to this because if we are going to insert “religion” into every aspect of life, I want someone by my side to attest to my “spiritual” leanings.

I also think it fair to question the religious leanings of the guy who just did my car inspection today. Along with my mailman and the guy who does my lawn.

  31. Pat: Is it possible this flier is only going out in bible belt areas, making us think that he was never aware of the Rev. Wright issue. If so, the video above praises, Wright, Farrakan and Phegler (spelled??).

  32. Josgirl: I don’t have a beef, with anyone. I am the same as anyone here and I don’t ask for anything more or less. If I want something I gotta earn it.

  33. Thats fine if people do not buy it; it just seemed kind of relevant. I am even not really sure what I think about the stuff in her article. Though, one criticism I have of that article is that it kind of suggests that you either have privilege or do not; I do not think it is an all or nothing concept in reality.

I am not really sure it is something I can ever form too strong of an opinion on because I have never been derided for, say, my sexuality, or my gender. Which is kind of where I am at, I do not know what that would feel like (aside from it being negative).

  34. Obama and his supporters have muddied the waters here by turning any honest discussion of his qualifications or lack thereof for the most important job in the world by bringing race into it. Like Chimera said up thread, because of his multi-racial and black immigrant heritage, he could have been the ideal post-racial candidate but he brought race into it purposefully to mask his inadequacies as a candidate. It was a well calculated strategy. That is one reason why we have to protest what he has done and still try to have the honest dialog about his qualifications for the job he seeks. If he can’t rise above race or race-baiting, we can and most of us are.

  35. I don’t have any white guilt or any other kind of guilt because of what some other white people did. They did it, not me. I guess you have to be low class and low information like me to think such ideas are absolute nonsense.

I also refuse to feel any guilt for anything my dad did or my mother did or my Great Uncle Charlie did. Uncle Charlie was a racist from the top of his snow white pointed little head to his wing topped shoes. He was the racist, not me. I hope that he’s frying nicely in hell. Perhaps I should feel a wee bit guilty about that but fortunately I don’t go to confession anymore so some priest won’t be telling me what a terrible person I am.

And I wish, among so many other things, that politicians would keep their religion to themselves. The combination stinks up both politics and religion, IMHO.

  36. I think racism is just too strong a word to be used in this instance, because if someone is a racist, it is due to ignorance, plain and simple. People who would not vote for a black man, probably would not vote for a gay man either.

Maybe someone has not been derided for their sexuality or gender, but what about not having the right tags on your clothing in elementary school, or not living in the right neighborhood.

Privilege comes into play in alot of instances, but not for this candidate and to say he has an understanding is just ludicrous. He went to all the right schools, was brought up by an affluent family, and has been stated, cannot go back to the salvery issue because his father was from Kenya.

  37. Thanks for the correction…although I do like the name Sherri!!!!

  38. I’M IN MODERATION – AGAIN.

  39. Dr. No (Obama):

  40. The privilege really depends on where you are and what preconceptions are held by the ‘rulers’ of the system. I believe IT is one of the more “equal” fields with fewer barriers to entry. Since much of the proof is in the code.

  41. Breaking News on Hardball:

    Gallup Daily Tracking Poll:

    McCain 45%
    Obama 45%

(Notice how I put McCain on top?)

Also, ……………… Yes, they had to carry blather mouth out on a gurney!

  42. HEY I’M HANGING OUT IN MODERATION PURGATORY

  43. Kim – did they find out you are a closet Obama supporter?

  44. Obama’s pastor problem is of his own making. Religion and politics don’t mix. Obama keeps getting mixed up with hate mongering pastors. I don’t know how he manages to find them all. I grew up attending catholic school and regulary going to church and never ran into a Father Pfleger in 40 years. He in 20 years has managed to have ties to Wright, Meeks, Pfleger, and Farrakan among others. Everybody says that Obama doesn’t share their views. At this point I really do not know what to think about what Obama believes.

  45. FLVoter: Me too. I have no recollection of any of my priests dancing all over the altar mimicing sex acts. As a matter of fact most of the sermons were dull enough that my mind often wandered. Probably why I am like I am today come to think of it.

  46. Carol: You are on a roll today!!!

  47. White privilege exists. Male privilege exists. Here’s an example of how the two can work in conjunction:

Two assistants, one white male, one Latina. The CEO stops at the Latina’s desk and says, “You’re doing a great job. I don’t know what we’d do without you.” He walks over to the white male and says, “You’re doing a great job. We”ve got to get you from behind that desk.”

I’ve seen it happen just like that. More than once.

  48. … that’s, uhm, “they’re”…

  49. Pat,

Would you please give a one-lliner on what that article says? I refuse to click on Huffington.

  50. At my church the highlight were the “guitar” masses where songs of Godspell were played. Nothing close to Father Pfleger or Rev. Wright.

  51. No, I used one of the no no words.

  52. Re: Nadar:
    Obama camp responds with:

“We are obviously disappointed with these very backward-looking remarks,” Obama campaign spokeswoman Shannon Gilson said.”

Key-Rist — can’t they ever come up with another word besides “disappointed”? GET A THESAURUS!

  53. Carol: You must know that your zingers have leave me in stitches. LOL! You’re a riot!

Btw, thanks for the “poll” updates. :)

  54. gary — I apologize for straying from the topic. FYI for those who want firm evidence of where to send contributions. This came from Hillary. (My reply is at the top.)

    Contribution Details
    Date: June 25, 2008 5:15 PM EDT
    Contact: dwwenz
    Amount: $100.00

    Dear dwwenz,

I made a promise to you, and I intend to keep it.

I told you that if you stood up for me, I would always stand up for you. You did more for me than I could have ever imagined, and I’m going to keep my end of the bargain and keep fighting for what we believe in — in the Senate and on the campaign trail, helping to elect a new Democratic president and a bigger Democratic majority in Congress.

That relationship will endure thanks to the remarkable journey you and I have shared. But there’s something else — less endearing and I hope less enduring — that our campaign has left behind: our substantial campaign debt.

I’m so grateful for all you’ve done for me — all the ways you have given your time, energy, and financial resources. But today I am asking once again for your help ridding our campaign of debt so we can keep fighting together.

Contribute today to help us reduce our campaign debt.

As you know, I had to loan money to my campaign at critical moments. I’m not asking for anyone’s help to pay that back. That was my investment and my commitment because I believe so deeply in our cause.

But I do need your help paying the debts we accrued to others over the course of this campaign. We put everything we had into winning this race, and we came just about as close as you can.

I will never regret the energy, effort, and passion we put into one of the closest and most expensive primary contests in history. But I need your help to move on to the next phase of our journey together.

Your contribution today will help us pay down our campaign debt.

You’ve done so much for me over the past 17 months, and I can never thank you enough. But I hope you know how much I appreciate everything you put into our campaign.

  55. I think rac ism is just too strong a word to be used in this instance, because if someone is a rac#$t, it is due to ignorance, plain and simple. People who would not vote for a black man, probably would not vote for a gay man either.

I had to mispell to get this posted

  56. Believe it or Not, Obama has a new Presidential Seal!

At least this one is more representative of who he really is:

    http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/06/25/a-new-obama-presidential-seal/#more-3241

  57. This post wasn’t about “white priveledge” it is about using fear to corral the African American vote to Obama, something their campaign did effectively repeatedly during the primaries. I only wanted to point out that Rev. Lowery was complicit in that, and that I find it ironic that they are now trotting him out again in the GE. I beleive Obama is utterly cynical about race relations, and that is one of the reasons I dislike him so passionately. If he were sincere about really helping the black community I might have an iota of respect for him. but he doesn’t and I don’t. I find it sad that men who at one point were seen as giants (lowery) have sunk so low.

  58. sonya; He is losing support from FDL, Kos, MyDD because of his flip flops on FISA. Too bad for him. The Huff Po article intimates they feel let down. Boo hoo.

  59. I got the first mailing from Rev. Lowery about two weeks after the Wright fiasco. I have received three more since then.

  60. Well, Gary, I’m frightened … of the Obama camp’s corruptiveness and how it’s wreaking havoc on the “democratic” party, not to mention this entire election cycle.

  61. If they pull their support will they be angry Kossacks or Angry Greeks? How will the campaign label them before sandwiching them under the bus? They, for sure, are not angry uneducated poor white women.

  62. Thanks, Pat. That’s what they get for being so irrationally hateful to Hillary and so gullible when it comes to Obama.

  63. edwardian – “shuuuuuuuuuuuu………..don’t say riot!”

  64. Carol: Hee-hee! Okie dokie. ;)

  65. garychapelhill, as a black woman (man, I hate that qualifier since I’m first and foremost an American and certainly not an expert on race relations) I think that Obama is not so much cynical about race relations as conflicted.
His whole Philadalphia race speech sounded to me like a guy trying to come to terms with his own racial make-up.
He spoke of his white grandmother instead of his maternal grandmother, who loved him but simultaneously rejected his blackness.
He made a point to single out black deadbeat dads on Father’s day.
Basically, I think when it comes to race, the guy’s got issues.

Kim, I wasn’t criticizing you, I was just making the point that in a melting pot, everybody gets a little burned.

  66. Chimera-I wouldn’t say his father was an immigrant. Just her temporarily. His mother’s family was here long enough to have been slaveholders themselves. His background is quite different than most of most. He grapples with this in his books though I’ve only read excerpts.

  67. than most. scratch the extra of most. browser incompatibilities!

  68. I got one of those Rev. Joseph Lowery letter as well!!

It was a contribution letter..it infuriated me!

I have never supported Obama in fact i can’t stand his guts…so i took the contribution letter and i got out a magic marker and i wrote all over the letter to take my name off of any of his lists and i wrote a whole lot of cuss words on it and said If Edwards gave him my name and address he could go………..blank himself..

i wrote all over the letter that he stole my vote in Florida so he nor any dem would get my vote in November…i said ask Brazile how much the dems need me..i said i Gave $50,000 dollars to the dems in 2004 ..they will not get a damn dime from me …ever again!..I said ..they stole my vote and pissed all over me as an American and my Husband who is American Indian..and who unlike Obama served this nation in uniform… and they can expect the same back from me now…i said piss off and leave me off their lists.

And i said i don’t want any of Obama’s type preachers contacting my home..because we are a family who proudly served this God Damned America!

OH AND I WROTE ALL OVER THE ENVELOPE AS WELL !!..YES ..IT ALSO WAS NOT NICE.. i am sure the mailman got an eye full!

    fly

  69. OMG, this guy is the one who lead me to email Donna Brazile after the State of the Black Union. He kept calling women “ho’s”. He made several disgusting references to Hillary.

  70. How does it feel to be scared? There is going to be a intelligent, mixed race, handsome, caring man with a wonderful family living in the White House in Washington D.C? Get used to it and relax and let’s make this a better place, not the hateful, divided house that we have lived in for so long. Obama for President and that’s the truth.

  71. Well, as a black man, I find Obama opportunistic and insincere concerning these matters. And as an American voter, I find him opportunistic and insincere.

See, Barack’s not the only one who can cover all bases.

  72. nearlynormalized, this isn’t a fiarly tale. It’s the GD presidency. I think Obama utterly lacks principles. He’s stepped back from every major issue he ran on. He has milquetoast proposals for everything from the economy to climate change. He is the first Democrat since FDR to actively run against national health care. In a year when we could have elected an FDR, the Dem establishment threw their lot in with a Jimmy Carter. You, my friend, are in for some very big disappointments.

  73. Are you really that dense? No one here is “scared” about the potential of Obama because of his racial identity. We’re disturbed because he comes across as the democrat’s version of George W Bush. So, yes, that’s a scary thought.

  74. masslib, on June 25th, 2008 at 5:45 pm Said:

    Who are you talking about?

  75. I got this from a comment at Murphy’s pumapac site and I hope other politicians will make similar statements.

In response to Obama’s claim that Republicans will use race to stoke fear, Lt. Col Allen West, candidate for Congress in Florida’s 22 District issued this release: (Clarice Feldman)
“My advice to Senator Obama is to run as a Man and Leader, and the American people will evaluate you as such, not as a victim. This is a Presidential race, based solely on a capacity to lead the United States of America. It is not about skin tone…however; perhaps we should come to expect these immature statements.
It also seems rather humorous that the Presidential candidate who was supposed to be such a “uniter” and transcend race is the one talking about it the most. If Senator Obama was confident in his abilities and character, he would not need to create a crutch for failure. Senator Obama has just tipped his hand, any criticism of him and his policies will be directly attributed to racism. I congratulate Senator Obama for taking race relations in America back some 30 years.” Lt. Col Allen West

  76. It’s over at Taylor Marsh in the archives. I’m talking about Lowry. He’s the major reason I got in touch with Brazile, and she said odd, crazy things to me. I posted the exchange over there.

  77. BO and MO are the one’s with issues of race. My family is multi-racial as I bet most are.

They can’t run on issues or experience, so they have to make it about “our character”.

Let’s all stop falling for him “distracting” us from his lack of qualifications.

Black is beautiful, White is beautiful and so is everything else in-between.

    ——————-

Wow! is this for real, him losing support at those places? Can you elaborate? Will it last? If it does, then we still have a few people with some intellectual honesty.

  79. Normalized, not gonna happen. Let me say this again.

Your man got the nom because he gamed proportional delegate awarding and caucuses.

Neither of which exist in the general election. It’s all primaries and winner-take-all from now on, dear. Your man’s best game is behind him. :-) Even gaming proportional wins and caucuses, he only squeaked past by appealing to superDs and stealing delegates he didn’t earn in a state he never campaigned in.

He’s not a closer. Face up. He’s toast, and I for one am looking forward to it.

Your man is TOAST. *cackles meanly* Whoops, sorry — you know we middle-aged women and our unladylike cackling.

  80. pm317, I’m unimpressed. Intellectual honesty is no such thing if you only engage in it when things aren’t going your way.

    Preaching to the choir …

Wait until they realize he’s not where they are on the war.

  82. Janis, I agree. It is wishful thinking to think they will come around. But even if they do, it may be too little too late. The damage has already been done and the party dysfunction is real and it is going to hurt us in November.

  83. Somebody left a brilliant comment a while back on either Elizabitchez or Tennessee Guerilla Women about how they’ve been flapping their Unity burgers in our faces for months while we’ve been trying to tell them they’re holding shit sandwiches.

Now, they’ve all finally taken their first bite and found out the truth — and from now until November, they have to sit down, STFU, and finish the whole thing, because we aren’t going to help them.

The Cordelia comparisons are brilliant — they really did hand the whole shebang over to Goneril and Regan — which is why Mccain is the better choice at this point. People with that level of poor judgment CANNOT be permitted to win under any circumstances.

Thankfully, as I said above, they won’t. The only playbook they have now is the one that their man couldn’t win with. Kim Frederick can take cold comfort in the knowledge that there isnt’ a single caucus in sight from now until November. Heh.

It’s really revolting — the one time that the Republicans stand revealed as their true shitstains they are, the Democrats lose the moral authority to call them on their crap and play “bipartisan.” HuffPo whines about how they were never about strong partisanship. When we’ve had Satan The Booger Bastard as preznit for the past eight years, you bet your sweet, red ass I’m ready for some partisanship. We finally had the chance to call them on their shit, and we lost it. Because of those idiots.

This is why “getting young people excited about politics” is a double-edged sword. They haven’t the experience nor the judgment to know when someone’s playing them. Nobody can sniff out smooth operators better than middle-aged women …

  84. It’s a small hurt in November to avoid a larger hurt for the next century. I’m up for it.

  85. I can now proudly say that I can vouch for a legislative accomplishment of Senator BO –

“In an unprecedented move today, Senator BO returned to the Senate and unilaterally (well, Pelosi, Dean and all of the hovering VP candidates agreed*) passed a law to take effect immediately outlawing any criticism or disagreement with any and all positions he may take on any issue at any time.”

Some say he came by land, some say he came by sea, some say “hey, we didn’t know he knew the directions to the Senate Building…………..”

*of course, Hillary was not included in this group.

  86. I won’t lose any sleep in November if McCain wins. He may not be my cup of tea but at least he has served over 20 years in congress, sits on some pretty important committees, has made some compromises that got him in hot water, and knows his way around in DC. He also served 5 years in a Vietnamese prison and was subsequently tortured yet refused to accept freedom unless his fellow detainees were also released. This really is the best I’ve got going for him.

Obama has little experience, leaves a very limited paper trail, has shady associates, has more than likely been indoctrinated in radical theology and politics, has never shown he has made a sacrifice of any consequence and is has never provided me with an impelling reason to vote for him.

That said, I think I can live with the outcome of a McCain win if I cannot vote for Hillary. To quote Gloria Gaynor: I will survive.

  87. What ever happened to we judge a person by their actions and words not by the color of their skin – unless of course, the color of one’s skin can be an asset to be used by ministers to shame people into voting for the candidate of their choice.

I think if MLK were alive today he’d be horrified by the shenanigans being foisted upon the American voting public. This whole election has set back race relations a hundred years – I, for one, never looked upon people by their racial group – now, I’m constantly aware of people’s racial group – it makes me angry.

  88. DRUDGEREPORT………GALLUP SHOWS….”MCCAIN AND OBAMA TIED”………..DEMOCRACY IS IN ACTION FOLKS………LETS KNOCK OBAMA ON HIS YOU KNOW WHAT

  89. I can’t think of a Dem who wasn’t at least ahead at this point in a dicey election year. Dukakis was ahead in 88 at this point, so were Gore and Kerry. And the best midsummer poll shows BO merely tied with McCain?

Only the Democrats. I tell you people, only the goddamned Democrats could eff up an election year like this one. I hope they take KErry, Kennedy, Dean, Pelosi, and Brazile, pack them into an airtight container, and shoot it into the sun. *shakes head sadly*

THIS IS WHY WE DON’T LET CHILDREN DRIVE.

  90. The reason that Hillary was not included in this group was because she was in charge of laying the red carpet, practicing her “smile” in front of a mirror, helping Donna B out of her cloak, assisting Michele with her make up, and fighting back the nausea at the same time.

She was told that after she completed all of her chores she might be able to join in the chorus of “Hail to the Chief” but only if she agreed beforehand not to get too close to the presumptive nominee as he ate his waffles. And hand over her donor list.

No word yet if she has been officially forgiven for getting in the way of The One.

  91. Janis – the fuel bill will be rather expensive, but I’m willing to donate to the cause. Do you have an account with PayPal?

  92. Pat: We will survive, like cockroaches! (love your comment about that!)

We have been able to adapt and withstand an awful lot under Republican rule. I was a teen in the 80s, I know what Raygun’s threats of nuclear apocalyse is like. I am a 30-something under Bush’s threats of terrorism.

Guess what? I still own my ovaries and uterus, and we are not radioactive by-products. Soylent Green is still green (not people) and despite the fact that my line of work has suffered, I’m surviving enough to put food on the table for my kid without recurring to public assistance (God willingly!)

We can take the pain from McCain…

    But NOBama!

  93. I think we need to take this on the road!

  94. ” … subsequently tortured yet refused to accept freedom unless his fellow detainees were also released.”

This counts for me. This takes a level of devotion and leadership that I can’t imagine.

I’m not saying I like him, but he knows what it’s like to keep going when the road ahead is strewn with rocks. Effing Oblahma was whining when the primary went on for too long! “Come on guys, I’ve answered like eight WHOLE QUESTIONS!” Get some goddamned spine, pal You think it’s tough now?! You think it’ll get EASIER from here on out?! What, you get into the WH and then it’s Dookie City for the next four years?

McCain has been imprisoned for five damned years and hope and change weren’t goddamned marketing slogans for him during that time. Clinton has her entire life ripped open and shredded in front of the whole goddamned world for more than a decade. She kept going.

Barry is hereby cordially invited to man the f*ck up.

I wonder where the parents of these children are? I phone banked Indian Americans in MD for Clinton. In at least a few calls, the dad or the mom would pick up the phone and I would hear their children yelling at them — tell her we are voting Obama.
From my previous post, that last line about being hurt in Nov does not make sense. We are already in a big fxxking mess right now.

  96. Gee, Pat, I thought she was in the ladies’ room, clutching her donor list and calling out from time to time, “Sure, I’ll be right there! Of course I’m going to help, just trying to get Bill on the phone! Be out in a sec!”
While she shares a laugh with Maggie Williams who holds her purse with the phone in it.

  97. pm317, we’ll manage, like SM said. I’m a pro-choice feminist woman, and I survived eight years of a man who apopinted a veterinarian to advise on women’s health. I survived twelve painful years starting with a man who refused to even utter the word AIDS while people were dropping like flies arond him, all because they were the “right kind” of people to die. I almost chewed my own teeth into shards when that man’s wide showed up on television and actually SAID she was trying to raise awareness of a dreaded disease when that disease was Alzheimers.

We’ll survive. Four years of pain now for a better tomorrow. We’ll manage, all of us. We’ll take care of each other and watch out for each other. We always have.

Except the Obamabots who caused the whole mess. They can go screw themselves, every last one. Especially the women — you need an abortion now, honey? Go ask another Obamabot to drive your ass to Mexico. You made your choice, you live with it.

  98. This is exactly what I saw coming when I was phone banking for him last May. That every word would be scrutinized and would be flipped. I saw it coming then and it gets uglier by the day.

  99. janis, an Amen and a gallon of hallelujiah to that!

We will survive. We can take the pain from McCain. I’m not afraid of Roe v Wade being turned over. Hell, since it was instituted, we’ve had 5 Republican Presidents! And yeah, we’ve been close, but my uterus & ovaries still belong to me and me only.

  100. Well SM mine are gone, so… sorry if I don’t weep.

  101. LOve the poll stuff pat and carol am doing a between the lines analysis on this info gallup really provides a lot of great info and 45/45 tie for McCain/Obama is a disaster for Sen Obama-and Team Obama!

that 80% of people feel MCCain can do the job as CinC and only 55% believe Obama can 25 pts is significant-the down play of this is strange….specially by gallup-I would expect better numbers from americas self anointed favorite

    fuzzybeargville

  102. Like I said, I have no real use for McCain, both of them leave me cold. But given my druthers, if he does achieve victory in November, I have come to terms with it.

Obama cannot stand on his own two feet let alone stand for one damn principle. He desperately needs the Clinton’s to walk him by the hand to cross the street. I would love to hear Bill tell him to go f**k himself.

If some parents are stupid enough to let their teen ager choose their next president for them, they deserve McCain. These are the same kids who made “Jackass” a hit!

  103. josgirl: lol

    Evening Michael.

  104. Mr Obama Cant get a bump-in the polls- to save his life or the democratic party?

  106. Kim, did you post over at edgeofforever?

  107. Y’know what’s so ridiculous about McCrackKills’ daughter’s words?

I bet you anything that she’d fall head over heels for Bill ten seconds after meeting him. So that bs about her not leaving her kid in the room with him is for his protection, not her daughter’s.

I’m 18. My name is Regency. And I’m in lust with the Big Dawg.

  108. Pat – EXACTLY! Can you believe the nerve of Clare McCatskill, a very prominent and decent politician, come out and say that she supports Obama because of her DAUGTHERS????

    WTF?

Is the US that affected by parental guilt that we’d sell out the most qualified nominee just because our kids threw a tantrum?

    Obama = Pokemon

  109. RegencyG! My sista in the Scorpionhood!

Yeah, Big Dawg is the MAN. God bless Hillary’s husband.

  110. SM: Pika, pika.

  111. I wonder what is going through the SD’s head right now – with likely primary voters (on the dem side they tend to be more liberal) Obama did well now with likely GE voters this includes the sea of moderates that do not vote in the primary- Obama is not doing so well- they had to see this comming? dont you agree pat carol garychapelhill and WS?

    fuzzybeargville

  112. I got one of those flyers from Reverend Lowery about how he can’t wait for the change Obama will bring. Then there is a letter from Obama saying he is not running a campaign but a movement. I sent the form for the donation back with a note that I am voting for McCain because Obama is an illegitimate candidate, who had the nomination handed to him. Then I got one from John Edwards for the DNC, who I used to support and did the same thing. I am in NJ, so it sure isn’t just going to the Bible Belt.

  113. I love reading the posters over at HuffPo. You have to wonder if someone checks on them and their med intake occasionally.

Some are expecting the entire 50 state strategy outlined by Plouffe to turn blue! They are even referring to it as “blueberry nation”. Cute.

Some are even rolling the name President Barack Obama around on the keyboard just for the fun of it. And they are expecting “great things” to happen when this becomes a reality. A few diehards are attempting to inject some sense into the discussion but they are soon silenced when the shark attacks start coming. Hilarious.

  114. Scorpions sting with style, SM. See Hillary run!

  115. SM, this is the country infested with parents who would actually stand outside a toy store at 4am in testicle-shrivelling cold weather to get the latest plastic POS christmas trendoid toy for their brats. Pokemon, indeed.

When Big Dawg got caught playing around on Hillary, I never stopped wanting her to break both his arms. But in all honesty, he’s like the pride lion. On the savannah, there’s one lion who suns his ass on a rock and makes all the babies, and ten more machelor lions who wander the plains, hunt for themselves, and hate him. Guess which one most other American male politicians are?

Me? I don’t give a damn either way. I don’t bother with men. But it’s amusing towatch frmo the outside, in a “Welcome to the Discovery Channel” sort of way.

  116. RegencyG – LOL, if I had a dime everything my daughter says Pika, Pika – I’d be set.

Yes, we do sting, but only when provoked. And we are DEFINITELY provoked this election season.

  117. For those of you too young to remember 1991 when Bill Clinton was running for president (regency in particular) he was some hot hunkie! And so smart. Gorgeous, with all that southern fried charm!

I will admit to a little hormonal rush but I voted for him. Twice.

  118. Bachelor, sorry …

  119. Pat, I remember laughing my ass off in mixed shock and amusement at the “boxers or briefs” question. It was inappropriate, but it was sort of funny to watch him bluescreen over it for just a millisecond. this is just not a guy who gets rattled while he’s working a crowd, and he handled the question well. It ended up getting the crowd on his side. But it was still sort of amazing to watch his eyes just go “BZUH?!” for about a millisecond or two.

I never thought he was hunky … but I did see the charisma that everyone else saw. He loved campaigning. He won in 92, and I think he finally stopped shaking hands and kissing babies in like what? 95?

  120. Bill has his flaws, I am the first to admit that about him, but I truly liked and admired him. This is a guy who went out with a 70% favorable rating at the end of two terms even after the Monica deal.

Obama putting him down will never sit well with me. Show me something you have done Precious and you might have a leg to stand on. Otherwise, shut up!

Ha! Aren’t those stories insane? Only to be thrown out or sold in a yard sale 3 months later.

I’m a first generation American, my parents were working class immigrants and I very much got an old-school upbringing, even had the “belt” that was like a “break in case of emergency” on the wall. I’m raising my daughter the same way , but no belt on the wall – I have a 3 time rule, on the 3rd time it’s a spanking!

My daughter can scream, holler, yell and beg, but if it ain’t on sale – we ain’t getting it!

Big Dawg/Pride Lion did play as we know, but I said then as I say it now: that is his wife’s & family’s problem, not the rest of the nation’s problem. That’s their personal business – I don’t care what he does as long as he runs the country right!

  123. Yep. Disgusting but not illegal and hence not my concern. I voted for a president, not a husband. Funny how after FORTY YEARS OF FEMINISTS EXPLAINING WHAT RESPET FOR WOMEN MEANS, some (trans.: MOST) people still don’t get that.

  124. Janis, I thought Machelor was funny. Macho-bachelor. Heh.

    Barack is so not.

  125. Pat – please don’t use the M word!

  126. Hee! You guys are cute. I’m still not seeing the hottie thing, but yall are still cute.

I remember Chris Matthews ging off on his express train to la-la-land one time on TV, talking about how Hillary Clinton is the sort of women who didn’t like men like him, midwestern guys who were carrying a few extra pounds. Seriously. He actually said it.

I was like what do you mean she doesn’t like paunchy middle-aged guys who chow a few too many burgers and fries? She MARRIED ONE, you nincompoop.

  129. I confess to standing outside a Toys R Us Store at 5am in a snowstorm to get a Cabbage Patch doll for my daughter who, when she opened it on Christmas morning, was rather disappointed since she said she had prayed for a Baby Chrissy instead.

I opened the wine for breakfast.

  130. Janis, what is WRONG with Chris Matthews!?

I swear, it’s too much psychodrama.

  137. My big love was Elvis. Talk about sex on a stick! He was it.

  138. Wow, I walked in in the middle of an *interesting* discussion. When Clinton first ran, I wasn’t that wild about him. I wanted Mario Cuomo to win–can you believe that? But every time I saw Clinton on TV the charisma would still get to me. The guy definite had it and still does.

  139. I wrote “Mrs. Richard Dean Anderson.”

    I love MacGuyver!!!

  140. I’m really amused that Obama thinks he can get evangelical Christians into his fold. They of all people are not amused by Jeremiah Wright. They will hold their nose and vote for McCain before they would ever consider Obama. Please note that I’m talking about white evangelicals. He has the black ones.

  141. I looked deep into Bill’s eyes at Hillary’s “Extortion of my Free Will to Remain a Candidate” speech. I could tell he was extremely in love and proud of Hillary. I could see the pain that he had hurt her and was remorseful of all past sins.

He told one of the reporters: “I slept like a baby last night – I woke up every couple of hours and cried like a baby.”

  142. regency, that’s one guy I’ll grant you was improved by a head full of grey hair. In his young days, I can think of few men who were more ordinary. But the grey hair has much improved him.

Man, I love it when conversations go off the rails like this. You guys are so cute!

  143. just got a obama for america solisitation-gosh I thought they forgot about me. I was an e-mail I guess I am not worth the postage…

    my reply:

“I am sorry my refusal to support Senator Obama in the General Election is not up for discussion. I cannot be cajoled, harassed, or guilted into changing my mind. If you would like to discuss us working on down ticket support of the party to increase democratic control of the congress I am open and look forward to such a discussion.”

I am sorry I will give no time and money to your endeavor; I am committed to the PUMA movement. I look forward to Mr. Obama returning to the senate for the next congress , where he should spend more time learning his job and showing up to vote on issues that are important to the Democratic Party. I would also expect him to keep President John McCain on a short leash until we can run a more qualified candidate in the 2012 election.

Also in conclusion, I cannot believe that you would support a candidate that has manipulated the democratic process to gain the nomination. The party should be ashamed. After our loss in November, I expect a major house cleaning when the DNC headquarters is moved back to Washington DC where it belongs. I will be glad to assist you in this house cleaning and in overhauling our nominee selection process.

    From the NYT article:

“Others described Mrs. Clinton’s luncheon manner as characteristically “workmanlike.” She smiled and dutifully dispensed handshakes, air kisses and “good to see yooos” to former supporters and nonsupporters alike. “I got a handshake,” reported Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri, a supporter of Mr. Obama, after the lunch. “No hug, no air kiss.” Mrs. McCaskill also said that in brief remarks, Mrs. Clinton voiced her full commitment to Mr. Obama’s campaign — in recounting this, Mrs. McCaskill feigned relief by pretending to wipe sweat from her forehead.”

  163. Carol: So sweet!!!

  164. What I love the most:

As soon as BO loses, he and MO will lose Secret Service and will be back to driving their old Chevy SUV at $12 a gallon!

  165. Interesting article via RCP:

    Assessing the Dem Primary fallout

Clinton supporter defections could be a problem for BO in OH, PA, and FL.

  166. Looks as if they are taking us seriously for once.

  167. I just read – McCain up 7 points in Missouri – take that McStupidCaskill.

  168. going for a 4 mile walk now with my friend. will be back with more pearls of wisdom from you all-

am trying to maintain a shape that is other than round

  169. Carol,

That’s funny, because the Clintons are not going to lose their Secret Service protection ever. Ha.

I loved that Elvis song. I had the 45 and used to set it to play over an over. I must have been in about 8th or 9th grade.

  170. Michael – we already told you we love round!

I’m leaving for a while also, but I’m heading to Steak and Shake.

  171. edge

Are you saying the money given to Hillary is going to Obama?

  172. BB – I know. There was an article about the Russert funeral. The creeps at MSNBC, Dowd and blah, blah blah all had a back seat to President and future President Clinton and are just jealous as they walk past them to the front of the show! And, that will always be the way it is!

  173. Let’s just hope McCain does not do a Bob Dole and fall off the stage.

  174. edgeofever, you’ve confirmed what I’ve suspected.

  175. Danger Will Robinson!

All of you living in dc/dc area — the DNC has foot soldiers on every street corner downtown business area. They are asking people for small donations for both BO and the DNC like street beggars!

  176. Many of my friends said to me the same thing Rev. Lowery said to those students. I’m AA. See AA’s are supposed to respond to stuff like that and fall in line with whatever is being sold. Remember when Obama used code in SC (bamboolzed and hoodwinked) to a basically all black crowd? Slave Mentality is code for, “you better fall in line and obey.” This AA didn’t do that. I lost friends behind it too. Screw em’. They were never my friends in the first place.

  177. OT – get tin foil hats..

I just e-mailed some friends a picture of Opossum and the seal he made up- but when they went to view the picture they got American apple pie pictures of Obama and his family, and were directed to his website- with the freaky “Change we can believe in” message-

    This guy gets scarier everyday!

  178. I’m thinking Italian tonight — there’s a nice restaurant near my apt that does a FANTASTIC rotelle with sun dried tomatoes, cream sauce, peas, broccoli … mmmmmm. They have a FANTASTIC Tuscan chianti, too.

Okay, I’ll say it out loud — we need a new thread.

  179. Slave Mentality is code for, “you better fall in line and obey.”

I think my head just blew an irony fuse.

  180. From McCain Online-Just Words

  181. Janis – I’m in Texas – do they deliver?

  182. Hmm. I’ve donated quite a bit lately. No phone calls.

Besides, they still can’t take your money. That’s the law. They can call and ask that you donate to BO, but they can’t take the money you give Hillary. It is, again, the law.

All they can be is a nuisance and they’ve been doing that so long it’s hardly surprising.

  183. I just put up a new post.

  184. It is a shame that anyone has to feel intimidated into voting for Obama. Sugar has taken plenty of heat for her support of Hillary but she can give it right back.

  185. I take no heat because I refuse to support the possum in chief

  186. Joseph Lowery as a “good” preacherman? Heh heh. He’ll soon prove to be the greatest embarrassment of the Obama campaign.

Lowery is in tight with the Reverend Moon. He’s a member of Moon’s front organization, the ACLC — which funded “Tear Down the Cross” day. I know this sounds bizarre, but it really happened. Moon tossed a lot of money at (mostly) African American churches in order to get them take down their crosses. Why? Because Moon hates the symbol of the cross. He wants it replaced with the symbol of the crown — signifying his own “crowning” as the new Messiah.

Moon is, of course, very close to the Bush family and the Republican party.

I know it all sounds difficult to believe. Google “Lowery” and “ACLC.” Then do some research into what the ACLC got up to.

I’ll have a post about all this up on my site soon.

  187. Re; race-baiting as a strategy. The more and more I think about it, the more I think.. Team Obama really believes their opponents are race baiting. They really believed the Clintons would do that and were doing that. That’s why they tell their supporters to be vigilant, and warn at fundraisers about how the GOP will make attacks on Obama a racial thing. They were convinced it would happen to the point that anything said by anyone remotely connected to the Clinton campaign fed into this narrative they created, because they expected it and were hypervigilant from the start. They quickly convinced their supporters of this (thanks to over a decade of GOP lies about the Clintons, and thanks to preconceived notions that some upper-income and privileged Democrats hold about lower-income Democrats). Once they did, that also tells their supporters that scorched-earth is A-OK, because their opponents are utterly worthless human beings.

To me, this is crazy. But I think that is the explanation, rather than Axelrod sitting down and saying “let’s create a storyline that they’re attacking us on race even though there’s no evidence,” Axelrod and co. said to themselves “let’s push the storyline that they attacked us on race, because they’ll do and say anything, we knew they’d do it, we know more and more people will do it, and we have to watch every move they make because so many people are racist.” It doesn’t speak to a very liberal or generous view of anyone who doesn’t agree with them.

  188. He made a point to single out black deadbeat dads on Father’s day.

By the way, I was so dismayed by this. I am white and I felt like I was part of the intended audience – that Obama wasn’t only speaking to the Black community, he wanted to show white people (especially more socially conservative) that he was giving these admonishments. And from what I heard it didn’t sound like deadbeat dads were singled out, it sounded like he was just speaking in general terms to everyone, though I might have not heard a part where he gets specific.

I felt like that conversation didn’t need to be on the stage of national politics, I didn’t need to be watching. And I also wondered, how would a Black man feel about hearing this speech – how does it feel to hear a lecture on Father’s Day when you *are* a good father and it’s a day for your family to show how much that means to them. I don’t know. It bothered me, I think he could’ve at least said things in a positive way, and if he said positive things the media and the pundits sure picked up only on the negative. That’s just how I feel, I don’t think we talked about it too much here.

  189. Senator Obama did not learn from Carters big gaffe went he read the american people the riot act about lowering our expectations right before he lost to Reagan. “The people” do not like or need to be lectured to. I am offended…as alway everytime this man opens his mouth. well gotta work to pay the bills…

    see ya later fuzzybeargville
