Friday: The US Senate Ladies Auxilliary Luncheon

The US Senate’s Ladies Auxilliary met on Tuesday to discuss women’s issues.  A luncheon of chicken salad, tea sandwiches (no crusts!) and sparkling lemonade followed the discussion and the event finished with a demonstration on scrapbooking campaign memorabilia.

In attendance were Senators Diane Feinstein (CA), Barbara Mikulski (MD), Amy Klobuchar (MN) and Barbara Boxer (CA).  Senator Claire McCaskill, the very junior senator from Missouri called the event to order and represented the Ladies Outreach Volunteers of the Obama campaign.  Senator Hillary Clinton (NY) whose campaign themes were represented at the meeting, was not in attendance.

All were in agreement that the topics under consideration were very important to women but no action items were proposed at this time.  Among the issues of greatest importance were, ensuring that women receive equal pay; keeping jobs in America; making healthcare more affordable; providing benefits for military veterans; and protecting the environment.  For the last item, a garden party was proposed for the next event with container gardening as the theme.

The subject of abortion was tabled until after the election as some of the ladies felt it was impolite and could be seen as offensive to some constituencies.

The group also discussed their plans for Denver and volunteers were recruited to hang the crepe paper bunting.  The colors chosen for this year’s festivities were coral, ocean and sand.  A cookie walk has been scheduled in July to raise funds for the materials.  A vote was taken as to whether Senator Clinton should give a speech prior to the coronation of Senator Obama.  The majority of the attendants thought that she should but that it might be a better idea for her to narrate the 15 minute film tribute to Senator Obama’s life and the achievements of his career.  Senator McCaskill suggested that this might be a splendid opportunity for Senator Clinton to apologize to Senator Obama for running but this suggestion did not carry the day.  Senator Lincoln (AR) thought that a sincere and polite, hand written note on personal stationary would be more appropriate than a public apology.

Senator Cantwell (WA) took meeting minutes and when finalized, will send a copy of the action items to the regular Men’s Senate for approval.  The meeting was adjourned and all in attendance agreed that the scrapbooks make lovely coffee table decorative accessories.

  1. The majority of the attendants thought that she should but that it might be a better idea for her to narrate the 15 minute film tribute to Senator Obama’s life and the achievements of his career.

Well now really….wouldn’t 15 seconds be enough for that?

I guess Hillary could do recreations of his subcommittee chairman meetings, right?

  2. ROTFL!

    “regular Men’s Senate”

Riverdaughter, keep up the excellent work, really.

  3. Man, the money I wouldn’t pay for Hillary to give a big “F%ck You!” speech at the Democratic National Convention. I’d like to see her deliver a scathing indictment with maximum snark and then drop the damn mic on the floor, give Obama a real flipping of the bird, and then walk out calmly.

  4. This site is doing a great job and this is my first post.

    Hillary or anybody else 08

  5. Sorry! Meant “Hillary or anybody other than bambi 08″

  6. You just took me back to Iron Jawed Angels – the back and forths between NWSA and National Women’s Party (which we should revive)
The demure ladies from the first organization were forever apologizing for the effective actions of the party and declaring they were
not associated with it. But they did try to take credit in the end.

  7. “Senator Cantwell (WA) took meeting minutes and when finalized, will send a copy of the action items to the regular Men’s Senate for approval. ”

God, this sentence made me laugh out loud!

Exceptional work. Thanks for a great start to Friday!

  8. Man, RD, you nailed it! When they came out with this I thought, ‘This is like the frapping ladies club of the Senate’. And sho-nuff…

I want Hillary to give a speech at the Convention like she gave the night was was supposed to concede, the night she won SD. That’d be great!

I am feeling more and more that the idea of a woman president, especially that woman president, was just so scary that the boys and girls of the Democratic party decided to not only close and bar the doors, but burn the party down just in case. It’s like they are tearing the house down around their own ears.

It’s scary. Obama is a horrible choice, maybe a fateful choice. I don’t want to be part of a movement. And I’m preaching to the converted here :) .

  9. Reminiscent of Nixon-era ladies at tea (plum-in-mouth). Again, riverdaughter, you nailed it right on the head. Were their pinkies in the air, too??

  10. I hope this narrative finds its way to these women somehow and bites them in the arse with it’s on-the-spot sarcasm.

  11. We’ve really been screwed…and this should be seen by everyone…who really was sabotaging Hillary from the inside??? Solis??

This is REALLY scary when you think about it…check it out if you haven’t seen it already…

  12. Brilliant and spot on! Obama Women are soooo post-feminist.

Particularly like the handwritten note of apology. I always got the feeling that Obama supporters believe that Hillary owes Obama an apology for having the temerity to run against him. The nerve of That Woman!

  13. RD- addendum to the minutes…..a special committee to be headed by Sen McCaskill will also be established to ensure the 18 million hillary supporters write nice notes of apology to Sen Obama for supporting Ms CLinton’s campaign, not jumping on the unity pony after super tuesday, and for generally still breathing…these notes should include a big fat check of an amount equal to their disloyalty.

    good mornin’ fuzzy is up

  14. Oh, now, THAT’S FUNNY!

  15. what I wouldn’t give to replace that film of obama with a video of all the voter fraud and intimidation that went on at the caucuses and polling places. Now that would be funny

  16. Another one outa the park RD!

Too bad the Senate Ladies Auxiliary members can’t see it. Then they might have some clue as to how tacky real women feel about them using Senator Clinton’s issues to support Obama.

Some have come trotting home to Obama like good little Democrats and others, like the repulsive McCaskill Drone all ready resided there. Whatever the case, the will fool some of the women some of the time but the will never convince or fool PUMAs! PUMAs know b.s. when they see and hear it.

  17. OMG, riverdaughter, you are sooooo good. This just fantastic.

  18. Brilliant posting. I’m off to start my day laughing.

  19. from what I understand, because of Convention money troubles, the jumbo-trons that the big tribute film would have been shown on have been scratched, and the tribute will be done via text messaging to all the delegates.

  20. You know, I want Hillary’s agenda by any means (well not using the “By Any Means” Rove standards). But I couldn’t get around the “all woman” nature of this group. That’s just not necessary. Hillary’s agenda needs to be the nations agenda. Thanks for a zinger of a post.

  21. plukasiak:

correction: not ‘law prof’ but ‘law lect’

  22. You know, I hadn’t picked up on it. This is basically Hill’s agenda(I had picked up on that) sans the solutions. Interesting.

  23. prag…
under the rules at the university of chicago, Obama got to call himself a ‘professor’ during the two years he served as a “senior lecturer”.

and this is a trubute….you expect it to be honest?

  24. I’ve made this comment many times before, but it bears repeating frequently: Hillary is the only US Senator with a “women’s issues” page on her Senate website. I also don’t remember any of this “gang of five” standing with Hillary as she fought the FDA for approval of Plan B. Oh, sorry–forgot that discussion of reproductive rights are currently on hold by the tea party set. And today’s Democrats are different from the Republicans how?

  25. “Senator McCaskill suggested that this might be a splendid opportunity for Senator Clinton to apologize to Senator Obama for running but this suggestion did not carry the day.”

Best line! (So many great ones to choose from.)

  26. i live in Missouri and have voted for and been a loyal supporter of Claire McCaskill, arguing for her when the progressive constituency was bashing her. No more. Since her endorsement of Obama amid tear mongering over his “soaring rhetoric” based on the advice of her children, I have remanded her to the category of foolish and/or brazenly opportunistic. I won’t vote for Claire again.

  27. RD, did you see my post yesterday? McCaskill made a point on Morning Joe of saying her daughter had convinced her to do what was “right” rather than what was “safe”, by endorsing Obama. Because, you know, endorsing Hill was clearly safe but wrong. These people don’t know when to shut up. Also, Stabenow, Boxer and McCaskill, when asked about the misogny Hill faced, all said “both” Obama and Hill faced prejudices in the media, but rose above it. Why can’t they admit Hill faced unabashed sexism?

Mhmm. That is truly amazing. But Hill is an unabashed feminist. There are few left these days.

  29. RD——-this is choice. I love this site. Thank you for it.

  30. That was worth getting up early for! Painful, but hilarious. Thanks!

(Constant reader, usually lurking, formerly of TM..)

  31. Melanie, Hillary and I are the same age, and, very likely she was marching for the ERA just as I was. Even though it was 35 years ago, we don’t forget that women’s issues are about equality and fairness. The right to reproductive freedom was second to the importance of equal pay for equal work and being treated respectfully by our male colleagues. I certainly haven’t forgotten what it was like for women in the 70s, and I’m sure Hillary hasn’t forgotten either. Actually, how could we forget? Other than a few token women at the Board level of major corporations, women’s economic and social issues haven’t been given much more than lip service during all that time, as the “gang of five” ably demonstrates.

  32. Nice concise job of putting that “group ” and “to do list” into perspective. another meeting or two and they will have the sternly worded letter art form down and can be as effective as the regular Men’s Senate .

    Another Democrat for McCain !!!!!!
    P.U.M.A.

  33. RD – another classic snark moment. LMAO.

  34. This is the letter I am sending to the women Senators (except Klobucher & McCaskill- that requires a different letter – “There is a special place in hell for women who do not support other women.”) This letter is long, but some things fire me up and this hypocrisy is one of them.

    Dear Senator XXX

As a professional woman I am insulted by your list of ten issues Congress can immediately address to improve the lives of the American people. This is your attempt to pander to women who will not support Barack Obama as the Democratic Party’s selected candidate for President. I and most women who supported Hillary Clinton are too smart to fall for this plog.
I am insulted by this action on many levels. First if you really cared about the concerns of women you should stand up and endorse Hillary Clinton and not back down to party leaders under the guise of party unity. If you truly cared about equal rights and equal treatment you should be standing up against sexism in the Democratic Party. When Hillary was subjected to sexism, we were all subjected to sexism because we have all experienced it especially in the workplace.

If you care about women’s rights you should investigate the treatment of Hillary Clinton by the media. If you care about reforming healthcare, you should help Hillary Clinton get into the White House. If you care about keeping jobs in America, you should not be endorsing the Barack Obama who once again has flip-flopped on NAFTA.

I also question your integrity in standing with Senator McCaskill who accepted approximately $500,000 from Emily’s List and then felt no obligation to back the more qualified female candidate for President. In my opinion, she forfeited any platform she might have had to speak for women’s issues when she so blatantly spoke out against Hillary Clinton.

Sen. Klobuchar accepted roughly $300,000 from Emily’s List. Why didn’t she endorse Hillary?

One thing I have learned from this primary season is that I am happy to work in an apolitical profession where I do not compromise my values in order to follow a party. I will not and feel no obligation to vote for a candidate who does not have the experience to be President of the United States, has questionable friends and does not share my mainstream American values. After over thirty years as a Democrac If Hillary Clinton is not the nominee, this November I will be voting for the Republican candidate. While I do not share many or even most of Senator McCain’s positions, I do not question his experience, his patriotism or his values. He not only speaks of hope he lived it for five years in a Vietnam prisoner of war camp.

I am not only voting for Senator McCain because of the reasons stated, but because I refuse to vote for a party that has treated a woman candidate with the disrespect that the Democratic Party has shown Hillary Clinton. The party’s mishandling of the Florida/Michigan vote as well as taking legally cast votes and awarding them to the selected candidate is despicable and dishonest The constant calls for Hillary to withdraw when she was winning in the battleground and major states and was also gaining in the popular vote was unprecedented. No man would ever have been asked to withdraw under these circumstances. Please reconsider your position on party unity and do all you can to have Hillary nominated at the convention. If Hillary is not the nominee many women will cast a vote for our country over a vote for the Democratic Party.

  35. pluksiak 7:23am,

    lmao! too true.

  36. I saw a some error where I have made changes and will fix them before sending the letter. Anyway you get the drift of my anger with these women Senators.

  37. Outstanding commentary. The “a splendid opportunity for Senator Clinton to apologize to Senator Obama for running…” resonated deeply. That’s exactly what it felt like those last two months of the campaign. She was in THEIR way–wasting THEIR time and THEIR money. Oh, what a shame.

  38. It looks to me like McCaskill might have simply been another of the “group” that the DNC made sure got into office for the purpose of now. Well, if this is the way they do business, it puts things back in perspective for me too… tea sandwiches… hmmmm

  39. That McCaskill asswhole thinks Hillary should apologyze for running!!!!! She has some nerve. Hillary should tell all of those weak assholes to go f*ck themselves!!!!!

Now she is supposed to degrade herself!!!!1 These women have no self respect ar women. They should be throwing Hillary a party!!!! F*ck Obama!!!!!

Hillary shouldn’t apologyze to anyone. We women oh her the greatest thanks for fighting for equality!!!!!

  40. GA moderate, what letter?

  41. Thank you for this.

Alegre also alerted me to their newest appearance on Scarborough during which not one of the three women there would acknowledge the sexism that went on during the campaign.

Foreover, it should be noted that the “Checklist for Change” originated in 2006 before McCaskill was even in the Senate and Senator Clinton was an outspoken and influential advocate.

I find it disgusting that they are just dusting off things they haven’t gotten accomplished in order to court Hillary’s supporters…without Hillary.

Go here for the video with Hillary on the Senate floor in 2006 in support of the Checklist for Change:
    http://donedems.com/2008/06/20/female-senators-silent-on-sexism/

  42. I wonder if we could take a daily poll of how many menopausal women are now having morning sickness!

Everyday I wake up and think about this bunch of Obama thugs, it makes me physically ill!

  43. Excellent! I couldn’t stop laughing! Thanks, RD.

Tonva, i am also from MO, and even campaigned for McCaskill and have met her on a few occasions. She will never get my support again after her disgraceful public display that was the primary season. Never.

  45. My letter is two comments up from comments on making changes for typos and fixes.

  46. Yah, maybe they want Hillary to deliver her apology to Obama waring a Burqua!!!! Apparantly they think that women belong at the back of the bus. The tone of the lunchon sounds like to took place in the 1800s.

No feminists in this crowd. They have to go!!! No wonder they didn’t stand up while Hillary was being attack with all the misogyny. These women subscribe to it!!!! HOW SICKENING. HILLARY SHOULD NOT GIVE ANY SPEACHES ABOUT BAMBI’S CAREER AND SHOULD SHOULD NEVER APOLOGIZE!!!!!!

  47. UFB Riverdaughter,

You kill me. This is a gem and, sadly, captures the current tone of the campaign season. The way Hillary has been so quiet, I’m wondering if there was an agreement made which included a designated period of exile. Besides conference calls, what else have we heard or seen from HRC? What a fucking tragedy this has been. If it wasn’t so sad, I’d laugh.

  48. McCaskill should worry about her constituency and her re-election more than this election. Doesn’t she know she barely won in a huge Dem year and that was with a united Dem front. Watch out for 2012, Claire, I’m sure she’ll get campaign advice from her kids too.

  49. The Orange Cheeto has Lieberman. We have McCaskill. I think it’s good to have a focus of our disgust. I’m thinking a couple of them probably talked to Hillary about this before it all went down. And I think we know what Hillary’s response was. It’s obvious was the McCain camp is doing. They know that either Bill or Hillary could go off at any given moment and get them perilously off message. So they are forging forward with isolating them and marginalizing them as much as possible. But as we discussed last night…they will always be center state.

  50. I meant “center stage”

  51. IamOnly1,

Well, now you did it. Thank you very little. You linked to a video of our Senator Clinton speaking truth to power and displaying the type of leadership that we so desperately need. I now have to go and dry my tears. Once again I have to talk myself off the cliff and rationalize why we cannot have a presidential candidate of this calibre.

  52. WS, I’m not from Missouri, but I will be travelling there in 2012 just to try and unseat her.

  56. I don’t know if a 38 y/o man can experience menopause, but I’m definitely sick!

  57. This is hilarious.
Thank you Sen. Obama. You and your campaign have put us girls back in our proper place.
I’ll go finish my scrapbooking now.

  58. good morning RD, another home run!

Yesterday I called several of the lunching ladies (202)224 3121 congress switchboard) and only the McCaskill staffer had anything to say…

I wanted to know why HRC’s name was not included in the checklist for change: He implied she herself chose not to be at the weekly meeting.

Then he immediately got dragged into a shouting match over 4 delegates, being dragged across finish lines, and stealing elections.

My suspicion: McCaskill’s staffer was ready with the innuendo, is at his wits end with angry responses, and Hillary was not yet back in congress, and had no idea about the press release…. (It is less than two weeks since she wrapped up.)

  59. Gloria,

I checked out that link to the subliminal advertising and saw some stuff that might be problematic but most of it makes sense. I’m trying to focus on what matters to me – the best candidate who happens to have the most votes, didn’t get the nomination. All the sexism, lying, race baiting sucked but the fact remains that the best candidate who happened to get the most votes DIDN’T get the nomination.

  60. GA, I see no such letter. Weird.

  61. elixir: ” All the sexism, lying, race baiting sucked but the fact remains that the best candidate who happened to get the most votes DIDN’T get the nomination.”

Mhmm. I think that’s why the women were not willing to admit the unabashed misogny Hill faced. They don’t want to taint The One’s “win”.

  62. dot, I am glad you called. Did you see my comment above about McCaskill? I swear the Obama Team does not know how to win gracefully. They just keep twisting the knife.

  63. Riverdaughter, I gotta say, it is so nice to come here first thing in the morning, I am never disappointed. LOL.

  64. Something about your last two posts… I cannot put my finger on it but I have really liked them.

  65. I come here right after I check my emails. I read with my morning coffee and the nausea tends to subside after seeing we are still in this together.

BTW, did anyone get the Email this morning about the first anti-Obama protest being held in Miami?

  66. No sparkling lemonade for Hillary!

And politics as usual for America – with women put back in their place.

It’s enough to make you puke.

  67. RD-
This is the BEST… Its 6;00AM, my eyes are barely open and I am laughing OUT LOUD!!! I never do that at 6:AM in the morning. You truly have a wicked and delightful way with words. Oh, by the way, LOVE the color scheme…

  68. Ryan: “Something about your last two posts… I cannot put my finger on it but I have really liked them.”

Hmmm…. Could it be “hilariously funny and speaking truth to power with creative snark?”

  69. Jmac, it really is. My sister and I were talking about this this morning. The patriarchy is dead to me. It bores me. You just can’t come so close and then be satisfied with same ole. To see the more qaulified woman who won the pop vote tossed over for the guy who shows little if any full-time job experience is just more than I can tolerate.

  70. I’ve already puked today!!!!!

  71. Politico reports Republicans 527’s are having a hard time getting off the ground:

Ghosts in the GOP Attack Machine

    article snippets:

“The truth is that, less than five months before Election Day, there are no serious anti-Obama 527s in existence nor are there any immediate plans to create such a group.

Conversations with more than a dozen Republican strategists find near unanimity in the belief that, at some point, there will be a real third-party effort aimed at Obama.

But not one knows who will run it, who will pay for it, what shape it will eventually take or when such a group may form. ”

“Multiple Republican sources say that Karl Rove has been in contact with donors such as Adelson and Pickens about helping to create an independent effort but that to date nothing has come of it. Rove didn’t respond to an email.”

“The reasons for inactivity on the right are many: tougher FEC regulations that make it more difficult to launch attacks that aren’t tied to an issue, donor fatigue, lack of enthusiasm among Republicans for McCain, and a fear from both contributors and operatives of being painted as a racist in the first general election campaign in history that features an African American as a major party nominee.

But, in explaining the absence of any anti-Obama groups this time around, every individual interviewed for this story cited the same central reason: a fear that their party’s nominee will publicly denounce them and hold a grudge.”

“There has to be a group and there will be a group,” said a GOP strategist who has been closely involved in past third-party efforts. “But when and where it is formed is yet to be determined. And we’re running out of time, the clock’s ticking.”

  72. Right, Melanie! And the more qualified woman got beaten by the greed of the DNC looking at Obama’s million internet donor list.

So now he stands before them begging for $5 – anyone can afford $5.

    Thank goodness for PUMA.

  73. And for this first anti-Obama protest, of course, the police have moved them a block or so away from cameras. They are trying to get the networks involved, so that they will be seen.

  74. …interesting: Hillary /Obama joint campaign stop next Friday:

    http://thepage.time.com/2008/06/20/clinton-obama-to-campaign-together/

  75. I don’t understand how he can’t pay for the convention, but he gets more donations than God on a Sunday morning. Either he is lying about his fund-raising, or he is a cheapskate and wants other people to pay for his party.

  76. Melanie,

dot, I am glad you called. Did you see my comment above about McCaskill? I swear the Obama Team does not know how to win gracefully. They just keep twisting the knife.

yeah, Melanie, I watched it: its as if they want to split the Dem vote.

If I supported Obama, I would be very carefull to not upset Hillary supporters: don’t I want their votes? The blunders like (not) noble, (not) right etc…how hard is it? The lack of normal human empathy is almost sociopathic: Bushlike.

  77. Thanks RD, this is a great post and exactly describes what I’ve been thinking

put this together with comparing MO in the View and CM in Vietnam and one has to ask who is really for womens rights and who really respects women as a whole

And I agree with Melanie and Jamc and Grayslady, and all of the others here!

  78. I want to write /call every one of these women. WTF is wrong with them?

This primary season is like one of those horror movies where all the brains of elected Democrats are infected by an alien virus. They seem normal on the outside but are actually subversive and working for the destruction of mankind as we know it. One by one they fall victim to it.

Who can save us? Only we can. We must fight and stop the Obama virus.

  79. sarah, pod people.

  80. Y’know I hope Hillary and Obama do lots of joint events. And I hope his damned supporters act just like they always do. That way when she stops she can say it was because the Secret Service thought they put her safety at risk. Or she can say that she didn’t feel that the events were promoting unity with her supporters who wanted to maim the people booing. Joint sentences are not UNITY. They are FELONIES.

  81. Yikes! Do I gag now or later? Rather than pushing women’s issues [are they not human issues] forward, we’re invited to witness a throwback to the 1950s–a garden party where “issues” are discussed, everyone tries really hard to be polite and nothing ever gets done. Oh yes, let’s have a “cookie walk” and make sure the colors are just right and please, everyone: wear you’re Kentucky Derby hat and white gloves.

This is what is offered? This is suppose to calm and corral the genuine anger?

They must be kidding! A tableau is not an action committee. This is theater for the masses. Circuses and cucumber sandwiches.

    Wake up America.

  82. Mawm,

Don’t you think he’s saving all his money for the General? Can they do that? Can they raise a ton of cash and just carry it over to the General? I think they can’t, it’s two separate accounts. Maybe they figured a way around that.

OT, any word on the 6/26 joint appearance with BO and HRC? I’m really hating that.

  83. I sent all 10 Ladies my own personal not-very-polite list. Here is Landrieu’s response, for one.
” I am unable to respond directly. Senate ethics prohibit the resources of my official Senate office to be utilized on political issues.”

Exactly my point, Senator, and thanks for the ethics lecture.

  84. Unfortunately, Hillary has gone record telling us to support Obamarxist with her last conference call. I had hoped she would take a vacation and let “the thing” sort itself out. I cannot support her in this, and if she goes to the convention to give a speech — even a great one — that ends up endorsing the only unqualified and unaccomplished candidate ever on a major party ticket, I will not support her any further.

This position of hers is unconscionable. She has turned out not to be the fire-in-the-belly fighter we neededin the Democratic Party — or the Party that used to be democratic. She and the other Dems who are supporting this authoritarian take over — even if by going along and waiting for its disintegration — should all be defeated. Give me more Geraldine at this moment. Now I can express my anger at Hillary for letting Ferraro resign from her campaign. And I can express my dismay for her statement that she was “honored” to be on the same stage as His Majesty.

I need some backbone. I need some strength. I need some American patriotism. All we are getting is Munich-like appeasement. We are in grave danger. The air waves, the net waves, the education of our children, the productivity of working Americans, and the love and protection of our country are all under attack.

Puma for Hillary is not enough. Puma against Obamarxist is not enough. If Puma is going to work, it must stand for the demise of all authoritarianism and all corruption of the Illinois-Combine type. And it must not be afraid of being called racist for being against Affirmative Action pseudo-accomplishments that are parading as the real thing. I am racist against that half of Obamarxist that he claims — that first-generation, Muslim-born, African-American who took advantage of the help American society gave minorities to live by resentment, hatred, and revenge. And Hillary wants to honor this — no way for me.

  85. Elixir. It’s a money deal. She’s talking to her big donors and apparently encouraging them to give to him because they ain’t coughing it up so far.

  86. RD – That is brilliant, comme always

This joint is jumpin’ – I can’t keep up with you guys. I read every thread. The quality of the discourse is amazing.

Plus, I feel as if I know you as individuals. It’s great.

  87. A film of about BO career achievments; you meant 15 SECONDS long.
Thanks RD and everyone, for this site.

  88. elixir, I don’t really understand campaign financing, so I don’t know the rules on that.

Personally, I think his “I get 95% of donations in < $100 amounts” is totally horse sh**. I think he has found a way to game the system, and is getting money funneled to him from somewhere else. Again, totally pulling it from my derriere, but it is what my gut says. My gut says that there is something not kosher about his fund-raising, but then again I have seen his sleazy moves all primary, so I think fraudulent fung-raising is not a stretch for Mr. Chicago.

  89. Maybe O doesn’t have any $$ left. Why else would he drag out Al Gore?Maybe now he’s the nominee, his supporters don’t see the need to send more money.

  90. OMG, then this is not fiction, but real. Apologize to Obama is that true. Please tell me this is all fiction.

  91. RD, well done! hilarious. :)

  92. Even evil masterminds run out of money at some point. Obama was not planning a long campaign and a serious challenger. He has spent way more money than we even know.

This is financial haka. At annual meetings, the companies with the worst stocks give the most expensive lunches.

    PUMA

  93. Jmac & Arabella,

Why would he opt out of the public financing then?

It doesn’t make sense. I feel like their is something going on that no one is talking about.

  94. He’s opting out of public financing so that he can get the fat cats to throw good money after bad. Obama is a con artist. Right now his Ponzi scheme may be in precarious shape, but he’ll recover.

He just has to find a new way to work the suckers.

    PUMA

  95. You are in rare form today, rd.

  96. He apparently said that public financing is a “broken system.” I’ve never heard there is anything “broken” about it, except from his point of view it would limit how much money he can throw around.

He’s breaking the system by refusing to participate in it.

  97. prplvette85: Maybe they could sneak in the Mad As Hell/Bitch video at the convention

iam0nly1: thanks for the video glimpse of an adult working in the Senate

    RD: thanks, it was brilliant

  98. Anyone have a theory on why Obama is holding a press conference at 4:30 this afternoon? Is there something he wants to say, but hopes noone will hear about it? Still not a peep out him on the FISA bill that Nancy Pelosi and GW Bush both love so very much.

  99. Oh…this is so purrrrfect! Thanks!

  100. Great post!

Now, O/T, your e-ears might be burning. Someone is wrong on the internet. Is it me or the other fella? Would you care to weigh in with an opinion? I’d be much obliged!

    Thanks,
    VL

  101. plukasiak 7:23am

Really good one, but add that the speakers teleprompter is way too expensive. Obama will have to go into seclusion for a month to learn his speech.

Does anybody remember reading about the teleprompter not working for Bill Clinton (at one of the conventions) and he did his speech off the cuff–not missing a beat?

RD’s post reminds me of Officer’s Wives Club teas that I had to attend some 20 years ago. That was supreme torture-even then.

  102. I’ve gotta go, but can anybody send this post to the ‘ladies’? With RD’s permission, of course. They really need to know what jackasses we think they are.

  103. 4:30 Press conference will be about Michelle’s appearance on The View.

“My wife did not say that I’m ‘pathetic’ -she said that I’m empathic. I am one-sixteenth Betazoid.”

    PUMA

  104. Arabella, will he actually take questions, or is this a sermon?

  105. Sarah, this is the e-mail I got this morning.

Subject: Shalom International to protest Obama in Miami on 6/21/08. This is the first anti-Obama protest in the nation, since he claimed the Democratic Nomination. The Rebbe said that even on Shabbos, we must rally to save Jewish lives.(Schneerson-’When Silence Is Sin’) As you know, Barack Obama stabbed the Jewish community in the back within 24 hrs. of his speech at AIPAC in Wash.,D.C. on June 4, 2008, when he supported a ‘United Jerusalem’, and then reversed himself by siding with the Islamic Nazis who want Jerusalem divided, which means the end of the Jewish State. ( We were there at AIPAC as well with our signs). Obama will be coming to Miami at the Intercontinental Hotel, Biscayne Blvd. and lst St., Chopin Plaza….on Saturday, June 21, 2008. Shalom International/www.defendjerusalem.net…… will be there protesting Obama as ‘Bad For America and Bad For Israel’… at 10AM.We don’t know what time h will addres the National Mayors Conference, so we intend to be ther with the pres i advance. A Japanese tv cre fro ash., D.C. is already coming down for us. We went to get our police permit today.(The Secret Service might move us to 2nd St. and Bisc. Blvd.). Please let your networks know and join with us if you can. You can also stay at nearby hotels and join with us even on Shabbos. This is very important that we speak out and set the tone for this campaign and that Obama is Hamas’ candidate as well as Obama having a dozen key people who also support Hamas, who are part of his campaign. We will bring that list. Fla. is the ‘pivotal’ state for November and we intend to make sure that the Jewish and Christian Zionist communities deny Obama any victory at the ballot box in Fla. as well as in other ‘key’ states like Ohio, Pa.,Mo., etc. ‘Appeasing the Islamic Nazis’ is extremely dangerous for Israel and for America, let alone having these people as part of his administration.

  106. gary – I think his campaign is setting aside late Friday afternoons for Obama to have temper tantrums – sorry, for Obama to air his grievances. lol

    It’s kind of reverse time-out.

    PUMA

  107. I hope he does address the FISA bill. Will he cave and join Pelosi? Will he do the right thing?

It won’t matter to his supporters either way, but I might have to peek at the Big Orange-Bot-Pod if he goes with Pelosi.

  108. PLEAZZZE LET ME apologize for Hillary for running , I know she is too polite to say what I would say . hee hee

  109. I sent this to the DNC. Thought you might appreciate.

“The Democratic Party’s unfair influence of a candidate for the nomination is unprecedented. Had it been Edwards & Obama the Democratic party would have allowed with dignity the primaries to continue through to the convention’s historical official nomination.

As a woman, my voice has not been heard. I have experienced more discrimination and harassment during this election than I can fathom. I have been pushed and screamed at by Obamatons while standing in line to see Hillary. I have been shoved aside by a vulgar Obamaton harassing Senator Clinton when all I wanted was her autograph. I have read numerous articles, and watched the most biased, sexist, offensive news broadcasts describing Hillary and her supporters as racist stupid white women. I have read and heard the B word and the C word more times than I care to count.

I do not wish to support Obama because he does not have the experience. He stated this himself. I want the most qualified, experienced woman in the whitehouse. Not a rock star. I do not care if his skin is black. And no one else should care if Hillary is a woman.

I have been a long time supporter and major contributor to the Democratic Party. I am a white upper middle class woman with a heart. I have been robbed of the opportunity to see a very qualified woman as President. I shall not forget. I will always remember. And the next time I receive a pitiful request from John Kerry or the Democratic Party for my contribution I will simply hit the delete button. I am not running to the Republicans. I despise them. But I will become an Independent. And I will campaign against every Super delegate who unduly influenced the outcome of this election.

When this is all said and done and the kids won’t or can’t contribute because they have no money. And the blacks don’t have Obama to vote for (and they did in record numbers). And you need my support. My vote. My cash. My time.

I will simply say, as you have said to me. “I don’t need you. I don’t hear you. You don’t matter”

    An Ex-Democrat”

  110. “They” are going to start campaigning together next Friday, you know…and all will be well.

Start saving your pennies for O…not!!!

  111. Jmac,

He will make a “statement” about being against telcom immunity, and then he will wait until it is too late to do anything about the bill before actually taking some fake, ineffectual “action.”

  112. Look, I’m glad this site is getting so much traffic, but would somebody please delete Gloria’s fracking wacko subliminal messaging conspiracy theory that she is spamming every thread with? Thanks.

  113. Actually, kc, it was worse than that. Bill Clinton’s teleprompter went out-and no one can convince me that it wasn’t sabotage-at the beginning of his first State of the Union!
But the guy was and is so damn brilliant that you’d never have known. I look at the Clintons and think “this is what the Democratic Party threw away?” Unbelievable.

  114. UpstateNY,

I can’t wait to see how Hillary will be received by the O-bot audiences. Maybe they should have a try-out in an invitation-only, press-excluded venue to find out how loud the booing and calls to “iron my shirt” will be before they take the act on the road.

  115. Yep. He’ll say something about the telcom immunity to pander to the OFB, but he won’t do anything about it.

  116. This post. Funny as hell, if it weren’t sad.

Oh well. I’ll still be voting for down-ticket dems …

  117. Retro is so fashionable this year. We have Michelle Obama as Jackie O, revolutionary wannabes hoping to Recreate ‘68, and now, the Stepford Senators. Please excuse this short message. I simply must strip the wax off the linoleum in the kitchen before I get out the washboard and tackle the weeks’ wash. It’s so hard to do in heels and pearls.

  118. bostonboomer,

Obama will not be able to unring that bell. He has cultivated a thug following, and he won’t be able to control them from acting as such. Interestingly, this may make it impossible for her to campaign for him, which would not make me sad at all. I’d love for there to be a good excuse for her to JustSayNoDeal to Obama. A few boos at Clinton and Obama’s handlers will yank her off the stage. His supporters have already become an actor in this play, and I doubt Obama camp wants the GE audience to see what scene stealing thugs they are.

  119. Seeing as how his campaign was based on whipping up as much CDS as possible, how is he going to find an audience for their joint appearance?

And isn’t it normal in civilized societies for the winner to be magnanimous and do the outreach?

  120. Hi RD,

just recommended your naughty writing to Open Left, which today belatedly realizes that we might need to be big tenty again, like the Democratic blogosphere used to be – when those who had some interest in those silly “old” battles (like civil rights and working conditions and such nonsense) non New Politics matters as you pontificate on, might be welcome once more…?

  121. Thank you Riverdaughter! I laughed so hard.
Feinstein and Boxer are my senators. May I send them your “minutes” with a polite letter saying that my family are longtime voting California Democrats that are now PUMA Clinton Democrats and for the first time, because of the takeover of the Democratic Party by TeamObama will be voting for a Republican – John McCain.

  122. Riverdaughter,

I love you! (See you over at JSND.)

  123. Hi Ellen, they are mine too.

I love Boxer on the environment comittee, actually…very tough situation for me.

  124. Very droll indeed, Ms. Riverdaughter! :)

  125. I have spoken with the former ( I am to old for a boyfriend, so what do I call him?) He is now saying things like, “Well, Obama is better than the alternative (McCain) and “He has to play dirty” and “Maybe it is not the chage we thought, but he is better than Bush”.

He is not the only person I have heard this from. I have heard it from several Obots.

Has anyone else seen the Shapeshifter’s kinda changing their tune a bit?

  126. dot, she’s great on the enviroment, which makes it all the more frustrating that she didn’t support the candidate with the superior environmental platform.

Ellen, please send this to them. That would be great.

  127. Mel,
Boxer did support her initially, and even 3 days or so before the “coup by Superdelegate” (wait, wasn’t that supposed to be someone else?) on the last day…

her staffers were kind of nodding and winking with me that “she said she would support whoever won CA” at the convention…so I do not think this was a sleazy decision exactly, not like Byrd (coal pandering) or Kerry (Cheney wannabe) and the more typical Obama Supers.

  128. RD…You made my day. Hi-freaking-larious. Please, Madam, could I have another serving?

  129. Mawm,

I agree. I’m hoping there is a way for Hillary to avoid campaigning for him. If she does, I won’t be able to watch–too painful for me, plus I can’t stand to look at him or hear his voice.

  130. Pathetic, isn’t it? I want them to read this blog. I will email it to my Senator Mikulski. Any volunteers for the other states?

  131. •Dying• laughing at post…theres a reason this place has 1,000,000+ views!!!

  132. This brilliant post and the intelectually stimulating comments are the reasons why this is my new favorite blog. Thank you for this post!

  133. rd – Fantastic. I hope someone prints this down and hands it to Hillary. I would love to be in the room so I could watch her fall out laughing. I love her laugh.

  134. Thank you for not publicizing the fact that my Senator, Blanche Lincoln, was involved in this, too; I’m embarrassed and angry enough without seeing her name again. Blanche is very much like Obama in that she is willing to change positions to suit her needs. When she first ran for office, she was supported by Emily’s List, but after winning, she decided she wasn’t really pro-choice after all. She has such strength of character, she waited until after Hillary had stomped Obama in Arkansas to openly place her support behind Hillary. Mark Pryor on the other hand supported Hillary from day one. I have voted for Blanche over the years because the alternatives were crooks or right-wing nutcases. But now I am so pissed off, that if Mike Huckabee ran against her, I would seriously think about voting for him. One thing is certain I will under no circumstances vote for her again.

  135. I am sorry, I don’t find this post amusing. RD is talking about a very serious issue here. I would die laughing if it were not so very sad that this is the state of affairs for women leaders in this country — they don’t have any power!

My husband just said, how about including on that checklist a new item “I will do everything to elect a woman president”

  136. riverdaughter – great post – I sent letters yesterday to “the 10″ – saved klobuchar for last since she was my senator for MN – as I was going down the list _ I got my letters bounced back from Boxer & Feinstein – so that made me angrier at these hyprocrits – so on amy’s letter I added a PS and told her to let her female colleagues know that their title is UNITED STATES senator not state – added that I live in the United States & they better remember who they represent and not bounce back letters from all of their constituents……….

  137. And speaking of this useless-ass Congress, the House has approved a bill shielding the telecoms from lawsuits related to their breaking the law against wiretapping.

God, yes, by all means, we need to keep the Democrats in office. Did anyone catch the cozy pictures of Barky yukking it up with Jay Rockefeller? I’m telling you, I’m DONE with reality. All I want now is a good fantasy.

  138. I begin every morning at the Confluence. For that matter, every afternoon and evening as well.

Great job, RD. Finely-tuned, elegant, hilarious work.

  139. RD, right on target . Everything they are doing to make up for the lack of Hill and the savaging of Hill, just make it all worse and adds kilos of salt into the wound . At this rate, the Dem party will cease to exist completely and perhaps that was the idea?? They aren’t even a parody anymore ,you cannot make this shit up. What are they doing??

  140. Thank you, thank you, RD et al (IOW, all of y’all.). Along with TL, this site is helping some of us hang onto precious, remaining bits of sanity. There Is Intelligent Life Out There. Just not much of it.

  141. Hello … am I still in the U.S. or have we somehow all been transported to Stepford? Throughout the campaign we got all that sexism and now we have all these ladies dressing up like Stepford Wives and talking about scrapbooking, cookie walks and hanging crepe paper at the convention site. What is going on? Is this a joke?

  142. Hi — man on the floor!

I regret that I am arriving so late. I should have kept better track of authors and their coteries as I started deleting bookmarks (huffpo, dkos, msnbc, …) some time ago.

At first read, I thought this article might have been written out of whole cloth, with tongue in cheek, so I went-a-browsing. Then I read your tabs and a few articles and comments from the archives.

    You’re bookmarked.

  143. Rockspot,

“What is going on? Is this a joke?”

RD is the Head Mistress of Snark

  144. [...] Friday: The US Senate Ladies Auxilliary Luncheon (by riverdaughter at The Confluence) The US Senate’s Ladies Auxilliary met on Tuesday to discuss women’s issues. [...]

  145. Are we sure it was sparkling lemonade and not another dose of that famous Kool-Aid?

I’m sooooo very glad the ladies have come to their senses – no more hysterical actions like daring to run for the Presidency of the US – ladies must know their places!!!!!

  146. RD! oh well done, my friend. Funny, I can’t tell if that looks like the red hat society pulling a stunt or the old south rising…
also that luncheon, I wonder if they had cheetos on hand, ‘cos over in wikipdiaworldomatic they are all connected up together. And to think, I once voted some of them…let’s call a C a C, and a cheeto a cheeto
pings anyone? The below by gary? How low can a journo sink. If that isn’t disgusting I don’t know what is, and gary, go after her K?
    hugs all round!
    and flowers………

  147. thank you, riverdaughter.

i sent this to Sen. Feinstein with a note thanking her for continuing to endorse Sen. Clinton and to Sen. Boxer with a note asking her to change her endorsement. the note to both asked them to investigate the sexism and misogyny that was directed at Sen. Clinton and all women by Barak Obama, his campaign staff, and the MSM as well as the Democratic Party’s failure to speak out against it.

  148. THEY SHOULD APOLOGIZE TO HILLARY & AMERICA!!
PUTTING FORTH THIS UN-QUALIFIED PERSON IS
    DISGRACEFUL!!

  149. simply adorable hats- could be Ascot!!!! No wonder blue-collars are no longer voting for the Dems.
    Thank God for Hillary….for existing

  150. I just called my sister in N.C. and read the post to her at work. She was laughing so hard that I could hear her co-workers asking her what was going on. She is an editor and said that this diary was ‘delicious.’

  151. OMG, I saw the original article – the abortion thing is TRUE!!! It want part of RD’s hilarious snark!!!

They don’t want to talk about abortion rights because it is POLARIZING!!!!!

Why are these women Senators again? What is their purpose in life? Isn’t CHANGE – or rather, iChange, polarizing too? Why, HOW, do such absolute idiots get into national politics?

  152. tsk-tsk. edwards voter, you have not been following along. We have already addressed the red herring about SOCTUS and reproductive rights. Besides, if it is really important to you, you have an obligation to petition the DNC to hold a fair and transparent convention so that Hillary’s 18 million voters are represented and she can win or lose in a fair fight.
If you don’t bother with this, then you have no reason to complain when we don’t vote for Obama.
You can’t ignore 18 million people without consequences.

  153. Edwards voter, what would you rather us do, vote for a man, who has no agenda, when it comes to women. Who has never stood up and owned his mishandling and outright sexist remarks . Who as of today, has never apologized or asked his supporters to lay off the sexist remarks, and their hateful tactics!!

Riverdaughter, I found your article to be profound!! And you did it with levity and as always with grace.

  154. Great post. I’m bookmarking it to nominate it for a Koufax.

  155. this really is an awesome post!

  156. OMG! They want to grant me equal pay? Isn’t that a bit controversial? Like having a lady run for President is controversial?

Maybe they should stick to tea and crumpets. Us ladies love to lunch!

  157. GA Moderate, if you see this, I wanted to let you know that your letter finally showed up and it rocks. Very good!

  158. Ha ha – An excellent bit of satire!!! Well done!

  159. I’ve already sent off a letter to my senator, Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow, for choosing to be used as a token for the Obamanation, but now it looks like I’m going to have to send off another one for this latest infraction. lol

Why do I get the feeling that for however self-respecting these women may have been in the past, and almost all of them were, that they wouldn’t mind being called “sweeties” by Obama?

I’m sure he could whisper sweet nothings in their ears, all day long. And, that’s all they’d be, sweet nothings, because he doesn’t have shit to say of any substance.

BTW, I hope I’m not the only one tired of hearing these same women say “well, I support him because my children are so excited about him.” Yeah, and you’re children are also excited about Hannah Montana and X-box, but I don’t see you falling to their every whim when you go shopping with the little bastards.

  160. did these women drink thier lunch not lemonade, are they so high on coolaid that they are crazy, they want an apology for running, this makes you sick. They should all be thumped on their hig fluent back sides for being a disgrace to women. Yuh!
