Barack Obama made one decision this election season that very well may have won him the presumptuous nomination. That decision was to remove his name from the ballot in Michigan. The irony of such a move is obvious now. By removing his name from the ballot, he managed to enhance his own chances of winning. When the UN or Jimmy Carter see this kind of maneuver in developing countries they call it what it is…rigging an election. The rest of us have another name for it, banana republic, and we’re not talking retail. But in most cases, the offender takes his or her name off of the ballot to avoid losing. In Obama’s case he managed to avoid losing and later was actually rewarded with votes he didn’t receive for doing so.
Here’s a question I’ll bet many people haven’t asked themselves. Suppose Hillary had taken her name off the ballot as well. Would Obama’s surrogates have petitioned for ALL of the votes? He was awarded all of the uncommitted, so if Hillary had not been on the ballot, that would have been all the votes, right? It seems that by keeping her name on the ballot, Hillary actually helped Obama in Michigan, because if she hadn’t there would have been no way to fairly partition the delegates. People would have laughed if he had tried to claim the whole prize. That’s why the only way to fairly decide an election is by the way voters actually cast their votes. Obama should get NOTHING because his name was not on the ballot, plain and simple. And actually stealing votes from Hillary and giving them to Obama just adds insult to injury.
What is the precedent for such a move? Is it ever OK to remove your name from a ballot and then dispute the ensuing election? I think not, but let’s look at some other examples. First there is the case of Florida. Same actors, but different outcome. Obama did want to remove his name from the ballot in that primary as well (because he knew he was going to lose), but that would have been against the law. Consider the following form the Florida statute governing electors and elections:
(3) A candidate’s name shall be printed on the presidential preference primary ballot unless the candidate submits to the Department of State, prior to the second Tuesday after the first Monday in November of the year preceding the presidential preference primary, an affidavit stating that he or she is not now, and does not presently intend to become, a candidate for President at the upcoming nominating convention. If a candidate withdraws pursuant to this subsection, the Department of State shall notify the state executive committee that the candidate’s name will not be placed on the ballot. The Department of State shall, no later than the third Tuesday after the first Monday in November of the year preceding the presidential preference primary, certify to each supervisor of elections the name of each candidate for political party nomination to be printed on the ballot.
By the time he (and the DNC) realized that a loss in Florida might spell the end of Obama’s campaign, it was too late to take his name off the ballot. Many Obots argue that this is just a procedural issue. But there is a very valid reason for putting a time limit on when ballots can be changed. Suppose Dictator X in the Republic of Bananas decides to hold elections because the masses are getting restless. He has to demonstrate his legitimacy as a ruler by allowing the people to participate in an election. So an opposition candidate comes forward and the campaign is on. Now Mr. X has no intention of giving up his power, so what does he do if the opposition becomes too popular? Well, one option is to remove his name from the ballot and then declare that any resulting election is illegitimate because the people didn’t have a “choice”.
Unfortunately we have an example of this type of election fraud in our very own country. This time the dictatorship in question is an affluent suburb of Houston called Sugarland. And in this case, the dictator wants to put up a front man to take his place on the ballot because he knows he himself (under indictment) cannot win. From the Boston Globe:
Former majority leader Tom DeLay said yesterday he is taking the necessary steps to remove his name from the November ballot, giving his party a chance to field a write-in candidate in hopes of holding the House seat.
I wonder how the “progressive blogosphere” reacted to that move. Well, let’s take a look. First from TPM:
The second issue is whether the attempt to remove Delay’s name is unconstitutional based on when exactly Delay has to be a resident of the district. (The Democrats argue that according to the Constitution, residency can only be established after election, if you are on the ballot, you are one, and can only be determined to be a resident once you are elected)
So in that case, the Democrats were arguing that the only way he could take his name off the ballot was to prove that he was no longer a resident of the district, and since his name was already on the ballot that proved residency (a chicken and egg thing). Otherwise, to take his name off the ballot would be unconstitutional. I don’t think they want to make that same argument about Obama. In fact some of them were even calling Delay’s move a “Republican scheme”
Remember that scheme hatched by Texas Republicans in which Tom DeLay would support a write-in candidate for his own seat, thus avoiding having to run himself?
It’s awfully clever, no question. But it looks like the ruse has just hit a big snag — there are now two candidates who want to be written in, which could mean a split GOP vote and a more likely victory for Dem challenger Nick Lampson
And what of Lord Kos of the Orange Cheeto? Here’s what he had to say:
Holy crap, DeLay’s gambit to get off the November ballot crash and burned. A judge has ruled with the Democrat and against Republican efforts to swap DeLay’s name with someone else.
Sorry to link to him, but anytime he can be exposed for the lying hypocrite that he is the better. And what happened to DeLay? He was unsuccessful in his bid to try to rig the election. Obama, on the other hand, got away with it.
But then again it is much more common practice to try to remove your opponents name from the ballot. Obama is an old hand at that too. Just ask Alice Palmer:
There they began the tedious process of challenging hundreds of signatures on the nominating petitions of state Sen. Alice Palmer, the longtime progressive activist from the city’s South Side. And they kept challenging petitions until every one of Obama’s four Democratic primary rivals was forced off the ballot.
or Stephen Colbert:
Two prominent supporters of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in South Carolina called state Democratic Party officials and urged them to keep funnyman Stephen Colbert’s name off the primary ballot, according to party officials and Obama supporters.
But seriously, this is the kind of thing we expect from countries that are less experienced with democracy, like say, Mexico:
López Obrador’s opponents – domestic and foreign – fear that the leader of Mexico’s electoral left wing will be unstoppable at the ballot box sixteen months from now. And so forces accustomed to stealing and fixing elections for 75 years in this country have come to a last resort: A dirty plot to remove his name from the ballot.
Barack Obama is a dirty politician. He wins elections through fraud. When we get to a point that elections are meaningless then our democracy is finished. If this is the change that we’ve been waiting for, count me out.

This is the Chicago Way of winning. We are upagainst a man who used technicalities, games the systems, supressed the vote, and divides his opponents.
I don’t think we totally understand what we’re up against. The fact that Obama “doesn’t need us” tells me that he’s planning on winning the Chicago Way.
He doesn’t need people, he just needs the votes.
OT-dot, if you didn’t see it on the last thread, that video was the 2006 agenda, not the current “Checklist for Change”. They’ve apparently dropped Hill from the group and co-opted her agenda.
Obama had time to remove his name from the Florida ballot. That statute only comes into play once the Department of State has the candidate list from the PCSC. Obviously not everyone who isn’t on the ballot submits an affidavit or they would receive millions of affidavits. This list from which the DoS works has gone through 2 groups prior to that. Notice the quoted statute doesn’t require that everyone who has declared they are a candidate to be on the ballot. It is only those who have made it past the first 2 stages.
What people also leave off of that discussion is that Nov. 7 is when the Department of State receives the list and that statute applies. Before that the candidate has 2 different methods of removing their name. The FDP had full control over which names to submit so Obama could have asked them not to submit his name. Secondly, the PCSC could have removed his name had he asked by having a vote (no affidavit required).
BTW, Oct. 9 is when Obama removed his name from the Michigan ballot. Plenty of time after that and prior to the affidavit applying (Nov. 7) during which he could have removed his name.
Next time around let’s not have any names listed on the ballot. This will pave the way for only the supers to have the final say since they have already and will save us the trouble of implying there was a takeover. Instead, going in, we will be armed with that information and our hopes won’t be dashed.
The more I see evidence of this fraud the more apprehensive I get over the final outcome in November. If he wins will any of us be satisfied that this was on the up and up?
“When the UN or Jimmy Carter see this kind of maneuver in developing countries they call it what it is…rigging an election. The rest of us have another name for it, banana republic, and we’re not talking retail.”
AMEN! Great post! What is the world coming to when America, the country that has made it our business to get involved in and oversee elections in other countries can no longer claim to have free and fair elections at home?
Very very sad when the UN comes in to look at our elections. Not a good sign at all at all.
Great article. As we know, he also wins elections by getting others removed from the ballot — Alice Palmer in Illinois, and Dean is trying to remove Hillary from the first ballot at the convention.
Stop the FRAUD. http://www.justsaynodeal.com
I’m sorry, this is an unreasonable comparison. It totally undermines the real issues that occur across the developing world.
The argument presented might be valid IF the election was considered legitimate at the outset. however, both the candidates AND the public were told that the election was a “beauty contest” and did not count. Millions of voters took the DNC at their word and stayed home. There was no point in voting and Obama was justified in removing his name from an election that he and everyone else were told did not count. Even Hillary admitted that it did not count (and why shouldn’t she have admitted that….it was her people on the DNC RBC that stripped MI of its votes in the first place).
To say this was some sort of nefarious scheme completely overlooks the fact that VOTERS were told that their vote did not count. To retroactively have the DNC say “we changed our mind…the vote will count” is what counts as voter disenfranchisement. The bulk of the people that would not have bothered to vote would have been the poor/working class and minorities. The MI DNC knew that which is why they decided that the elections as they stood did not reflect the opinion of MI voters. To deny the fact that Obama would have cleaned up in places like Detroit or Ann Arbor is to deny reality.
“It seems that by keeping her name on the ballot, Hillary actually helped Obama in Michigan, because if she hadn’t there would have been no way to fairly partition the delegates. People would have laughed if he had tried to claim the whole prize. ”
They might have laughed, but the chances are very good that the DNC’s RBC would have given him all the votes.
You know, it was fine when Sen. Obama messed with Hillary…but he also messed up Stephen Colbert?!?!?!? Nation, wake up! We cannot let this man, like so many bears, kill again!
Talkleft reports that Obama has gone back on his promise to use public financing in the GE.
I guess that’s what change we can believe in means — we can believe that he’s going to change his mind about his pesky promises.
keisha, when in the course of our democracy has it ever been ok to tell voters that their votes don’t count? I can’t believe that you stand up for this kind of crap. you should be ashamed.
A vote for Obama by loyal Democrats is saying that this kind of corruption is all right. To hell with this lesser of two evils b.s.!
If this country is so damn fragile that 4 years of John McCain will bring it down then so be it. IMHO it is in far more danger with Obama in the Oval Office. If we learned nothing else with Bush/Cheney and a compliant Republican Legislative Branch we should know that unity is not necessarily a “good” thing.
We cannot, must not allow the party of FDR, JFK, RFK and Harry S. Truman to act like a bunch of thugs. First it is necessary to remove the “mote” in our own eye.
and step, that statute also says that you can only remove your name if you do not intend to run for the nomination for president…..
and keisha, how can you argue that voters who stayed home aren’t counted? very stooopid. and if I do accept your argument, why does obama get uncommitted votes? what about uncommitted voters for hillary who stayed home. don’t you see how completely STUPID your argument is?
Seriously, who gives a rap about who goes first anyway? Even if the primary was pushed up in a state that wanted to be counted first what possible difference could it make? People were excited to be included and the date had no bearing on their preference. “Punishing”, or whatever they want to call it, is just plain stupid. Iowa and NH are two of the most sparsely inhabited states in the US. In the long run, who cares who went first? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
garychapelhill…Great post! Thanks for calling it what it is: election fraud.
Of course, the RBC also took some delegates from Hillary and gave them to Obama. I didn’t realize leaving your name off the ballot could actually GAIN you delegates!
No wonder we all feel like we’re living in the Twilight Zone.
Keisha, there was an Obama campaign in Michigan to get their supporters to vote Uncommitted. Google Monica COnyers radio ad. That in itself was breaking the rules about not campaigning. Don’t be fooled. They were dead serious about undermining the legitimacy of Michigan’s elections. That is why they called it a “beauty contest”. But it was a legitimate election. The results were certified by the state. Only a totally anti_democratic person would try to delegitimize the voice of hundreds of thousands of people.
The fix was all about punishing states that would go to Clinton and elevating sates that would favor Obama. SC, Iowa, and NH(they thought he would win there) all moved their primaries up without waivers and none of them were “punished”. The DNC selectively granted waivers after the fact to those states, and kept MI and FL out in the cold until May. Then they rewarded Obama with votes that were not cast for him.
There is a reason many states have laws about taking your name off the ballot. It is a rat-fucking anti-Democratic trick.
Why was the convention set in Denver, CO, the state everyone bragged that Obama could bring into the Democratic fold? WHy was the convention nomination set for the anniverssary of MLK’s “I have a dream” speech?
The FIx was in since 2004. If you look at everything that happened in this primary through that lens, everything falls into place, including their “selective” judgement on MI and FL.
mawm, please stop posting with my name….
garychapelhill, on June 19th, 2008 at 11:55 am Said:
Sorry Again, that last comment was from me. I am eating lunch at home, and I always forget to sign off of Gary’s account.
garychapelhill, yes but it isn’t the only way off the ballot. Were you on the ballot? Did you submit an affidavit?
The statutes also say:
“The Secretary of State shall submit such list of names of presidential candidates to the selection committee on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of the year preceding the presidential preference primary. Each person designated as a presidential candidate shall have his or her name appear, or have his or her delegates’ names appear, on the presidential preference primary ballot unless all committee members of the same political party as the candidate agree to delete such candidate’s name from the ballot. ”
They don’t need to ALSO submit an affidavit if removed this way. In fact, the candidate could want to be on the ballot and still be removed this way (they can appeal the decision). And prior to the PCSC ever voting on the list each political party has FULL control over their part of the list. They can include or omit whoever they want. No affidavit required.
Only after the PCSC has voted and given the list to the Department of State does the affidavit come into play. It is at that point each candidate on the list is notified by mail and must submit an affidavit to be removed (no vote by the PCSC required for removal by that method).
Keisha: “The bulk of the people that would not have bothered to vote would have been the poor/working class and minorities.
The MI DNC knew that which is why they decided that the elections as they stood did not reflect the opinion of MI voters. ”
I know, ‘cuz in fact they would have voted for ME!! They just didn’t bother to! To deny that is to deny reality!
So I ask you: Where are my delegates?! I demand my delegates! I’ll even share some with anyone else who can prove that they, too, had voters who didn’t bother to vote for them–like my cats, who wanted to vote but didn’t bother to, but I KNOW they would have voted for Kucinich (well, one is a Republican, he would have gone for Romney)! I mean I have so many delegates I can share! There are people in Georgia and ‘possums in Virginia who I KNOW would have voted for me but didn’t bother to! Where are my delegates?
Oh, and I also want 62 million popular votes because it doesn’t matter how many there were, counting votes is undemocratic! It disenfranchises people! So just give them to me.
I have said that my name was not only “not” on the Michigan ballot, it was not on any of the other ballots!
I have spent a lot of time trying to get my share of the delegates! I can’t believe I have been sooooooooo unsuccessful. Obama must know someone.
Thank you for this post, I had read a while back that BO got all his opposition removed in IL. Obama represents typical Chicago machine politics. I knew it over a year ago when he endorsed Mayor Daley 2 (who has had so many corruption problems, but somehow keeps getting elected). I remember BO saying something like “he’s cleaning up the problems” in way of explanation for his endorsement. ROFLMAO, I knew what he was really up to….look where he is now.
I’m still hoping it is a temporary situation.
I have to go with Gary on this. Although we had yet to see the level of corruption that occurred on May 31st, when the MSM and the pundits all echoed their preference with one voice my bs odometer began to throw off signals. Why were they all so anxious to back an untested, unqualified, inexperienced, questionable candidate with no discernible skills?
Now as the pieces start coming together you can see the pattern evolve. When it looked as if Hillary may gain the lead, they threw in the “race baiting” and my instincts were going into overdrive. There was little if any basis in fact. When the supers started coming forward long before the voters had actually made a decision, I knew then and there that something altogether different was happening out of sight.
At this point, to suggest otherwise, is just plain denial of the facts. Someday we will discover the truth. Hopefully it won’t be too late.
DancingOpossum – I trump you because I know alot more 4 legged creatures and even the insect population would have voted for me.
Not to mention, I really think I could have carried the living-impaired population also.
Where do I go to stop this injustice? The White House is mine!
“Meaningless election”
That is why it is hard for me to vote for Obama. To me, a vote for him is an acceptance of manipulating elections. In addition to the fraud you mention here, there is the problem with caucuses and then the very deliberate effort to suppress turnout in the last states. That is fundamentally anti-Democratic.
Maybe, we can get Jimmy Carter to look into this!
Carol –
ROFLMAO!!!
Carol, Carter already came out for the disenfranchisement of both Florida and Michigan.
Hi,
).
I am a reader from this website from Germany (btw we have a female chancellor
I understand all this anger about this somewhat messed up voting system.
However, as I recall all parties agreed that the vote in Michigan would not count (There is even a recording of HC saying that by herself?).
So my question is: Why did you supporters (and also HC herself) only start calling for a change of these initial rules after HC had won the Michigan election? In my opinion it is very difficult to come to any fair distribution for the Michigan delegates (It was a biased vote in many ways). I agree that the initial rules (not counting the votes) are highly unfortunate. But isnt it equally questionable to change the rules during the game?
Ok, just wanted to add this perspective to
the discussion
Best regards,
Hans
They agreed to not campaign in MI and FL, not that it would not count.
Carol, Carter already came out for the disenfranchisement of both Florida and Michigan.
and Obama even broke the no campaigning agreement.
hans, they didn’t “agree” to these rules, they were arbitrary punishments handed down by the DNC, I’m not sure about germany, but voting is a sacred right here and we don’t look kindly on politicians or their surrogates telling us that our votes don’t count
No, Hans, that isn’t what she said, and I always ferevntly believed FL and MI would count. That’s why she didn’t play politics by removing her name. Did you know that in the history of primaries, no Party has ever successfully fully sanctioned two states? Did you know even Dean conceded the votes of these certified, legal elections should be counted in the pop vote total?
Melanie – it was a joke – just like Jimmy Carter is a joke.
Hell lets just say none of the votes counted and keep Bush in office.
Hans, if it weren’t going to count, why did the RBC do what they did? If they were adamant about not counting FL and MI, there would have been no delegate seating. Instead, RBC rewarded Obama with votes that were not cast for him.
Seems like if %100 disenfranchisement is what they were seeking, they should have stuck with 0% delegate seating.
It just reeks and for some dim-witted troll to come on, read the post and whine, pisses me off.
kim–exactly, and what about the DeLay issue…(crickets) because it shows their hypocrisy…

Keisha said: “To say this was some sort of nefarious scheme completely overlooks the fact that VOTERS were told that their vote did not count. To retroactively have the DNC say “we changed our mind…the vote will count” is what counts as voter disenfranchisement.”
I quoted you in part, Keisha; your post doesn’t make any sense. Firstly, as the post above says, WHY is it alright to tell voters their votes don’t or won’t count? It isn’t.
You need to get all the facts first …. Obama told his voters to vote “uncommitted” on the ballot; furthermore, it was advertised all over T.V. and newspapers to vote Uncommitted if you want to cast a vote for Obama or Edwards. (Obama received ALL the uncommitted votes btw) Why would Obama himself tell his supporters to do that if he knew the votes weren’t going to count?
You say he would have cleaned up in Michigan in certain areas. What about Florida – where his name was still on the ballot – did he clean up? No.
How about the revote when all that talk was going around? Hillary wanted a revote – offered to raise money for it. Obama did not want a revote. Why?
Keisha, I hope you stick around here so that you can start to see clearly about what has occurred. I believe it is very important. for you to do so.
The bottom line is that the DNC stacked the deck for Obama.
This is my new bumper sticker
Convention HOW WHERE & WHEN?
How did they arrive at Denver(the state Obama was supposed to fring into the fold) on the anniverssary of MLK’s “I have a dream speech”, if they weren’t sure Obama was going to be the nominee?
Thank God Hillary kept fighting, we might never have seen how corrupt the DNC is.
The rules were changed so many times that it’s not a convincing argument to object to one of the changes.
My question is, if Michigan and Florida did not count, then Hillary lost. Okay, fine. But in all fairness do we not have to go a step further, discount South Carolina, New Hampshire and Iowa, the states that were given waivers. So, if we do it the only way we can, by discounting all states that went early; then who won without FL, MI, SC IO and NH?
Amen. Without her we would know less that what we know now. Nobody else could have taken on the DNC. She is an American Hero.
Here is the January 2007 press release announcing the place and dates of the Democratic convention. While it explains the choice of cities, it says nothing about the dates, which are very unusual (the party out of the White House ordinarily holds its convention in mid July):
http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/01-11-2007/0004504562&EDATE=
MI and FL count. They make up about 10% of the pledged and super delegates combined. This is a shell game.
Thank you for the polite responses. I also would agree that BO may have taken his name off the ballot for tactical purposes.
@Mawm: I was referring to this youtube clip
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ULxxBz-PAjg&feature=related
HC is saying: “It is clear this election … is not gonna count for anything” (I didnt understand the “…”, but I would claim she is talking about the Michigan election…)
@GarychapelHill: You are right, voting is sacred in Germany (for historical reasons
). However (sadly) we do not have primary elections at all. The candidates of the big parties are decided in “backrooms”. In this aspect, I consider the american election system to be better than the German system
Gary,
This is brilliant! And now Obama wants to remove Hillary Clinton’s name from the ballot at the convention! He’s still afraid he might lose. What a chickensh*t!
Her words were taken out of context.
Dear Melanie,
Can you provide me with the context., I would be interested…
Thank you
Keisha: “To deny the fact that Obama would have cleaned up in places like Detroit or Ann Arbor is to deny reality.”
I haven’t seen anyone deny this. The fact is Obama CHOSE to take his name off the ballot. If you are not on the ballot you can’t get votes. That was HIS choice. The 59 votes he was awarded and that put him over the top in delegates were STOLEN, Keisha, whether you like it or not.
Hans, she was taken out of context, but even if Jesus himself said the election wasn’t going to count it wouldn’t matter. One person doesn’t get to decide whether millions of people’s votes count or not. That wouldn’t be Democratic.
hans, actions speak louder than words. She meant that they did not count at that time because of the penalties from the DNC. She fully expected they eventually would. that’s why she left her name on the ballot…and also because it was the right thing to do.
Hans:
All parties did not agree. You forget the voters.
The votes do not belong to the candidates, they belong to the voters.
Disenfranchising voters is anathema to any true liberal or progressive.
And if those elections did not count, then revotes should have been scheduled.
The DNC/RBC ruling was based on the elections, although in the case of Michigan they hired a psychic to count the votes. The psychic determined how many voters would have voted for Obama, but voted for Hillary instead.
Hillary offered a re-vote in MI and Obama blocked it.
For Hans, here’s the context, where she makes it clear that it is because she does NOT take MI for granted that she kept her name on the ballot.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/11/AR2007101100859.html
Keisha:
If my name had been on the ballot I would have won easily.
Where are my delegates?
Hans,
Your perspective is not new. In fact it is a very *old* Obama talking point. Since you are from another country which has been permitted to elect a woman leader and she was not defeated with election fraud, I’ll assume you didn’t know those were Obama talking points, AKA *lies.*
Exactly, some of thsoe delegates are mine. There are folks who would have voted for me, but they thought it wouldn’t count. I represent those that didn’t vote.
Y’all can see his IP. Is Hans really in another country?
Hans,
Try teh Google.
http://news.google.com/nwshp?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8
It’s quite helpful when doing research. Try plugging in “checklist” women and a few of the Senator’s names. Melanie’s orginal post is here.
http://alegrescorner.soapblox.net/
“Voters were told their vote wouldn’t count.” This, like all of the oft-repeated botcanards, does not stand up under inspection. The voters were not told anything. The news reported that the DNC had ruled, that the ruling was unusual, that 50% was actually in the DNC by-laws, that lawsuits and protests were likely, and that Michigan delegates would eventually have to be seated. Nothing whatsoever was reported about the popular vote count.
They come with new names trying to spew the same talking points. Why come if we’re so unimportant.?
I hear barackobama.com is just made for you.
Keisha, Sen. Obama did well in Gainesville and Tallahassee and lost badly in the rest of FL
Melanie,
I let RonK know about Keisha and Hans. I don’t know how to do the IP trace and I have to run out the door in a couple of mins anyway.
If Gary thinks they are highjacking the thread, he can delete them. I think some polite discussion like this is useful, especially for the benefit of lurkers, do you agree?
It makes sense not to give Hillary any of the uncomitted votes, because her name was on the ballot. If someone had intended for their vote, and their share of delegates to go for Hillary, they would have voted for her name on the ballot. Everyone who voted ‘uncomitted’ didn’t want their vote going to Hillary, or else they would have voted for her. And for those who say that edwards was also in the race and some delegates should have gone to him, fine, but remember that he has endorsed obama and all of edwards’ delegates go to obama anyway so it doesn’t matter.
Great post! Thank you, Gary. Great comments, as usual Arabella.
I have been questioning a lot of my assumptions lately. I wonder how “rig-proof” our GEs are? With the use of “polls” to legitimize vote distribution, how secure can we be about the election? Would it be as obvious as the MI situation? Would Carter call election fraud if it occurred here? Why is BO so confidant?
Sorry. Feeling a little nervous today…
bb…I agree. If Hans is legit, it doesn’t surprise me that the Euro press is fawing over obama. But its more like a sporting match for them I suppose, a little bit more detached than us.
Gary, as usual great post. Thank you.
IMO, I think we should go upstream from the outcomes and look at what preceded them.
Both BZero and Edwards were too cute by half in their strategy. At the time, knowing they would lose, they took their names off the ballot in hopes to further solidify claims of invalidity for the election.
To ice the cake, BZero initiated ads to vote “uncommitted — an absolute violation of the RBC ruling.
So, in essence, BZero’s strategy call was a bad one. He should have been forced to live up to it just as Sen. Clinton was forced to live up to the bad strategy of allowing BZero to run virtually unopposed in the red caucus states.
The RBC then had to rectify BZero’s bad judgment call by awarding him all the uncommitted. That smacks of the worst kind of political shenanigans since Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004.
anthony, unless obama changed his name to “uncommitted” he should get nothing. what you are arguing is fundamentally undemocratic.
Anthony91, taking your name off the ballot is an old anti-democratic trick and anyone doing it should be punished NOT rewarded.
Obama wins by voter suppression and voter fraud. Obama is an enemy of Democracy. THe name of the Democratic party should be changed to the Anti-Democratic party.
He should not have been given the “uncommitted” votes and even more, he shouldn’t have been given four of her delegates.
That’s where the RBC really went over the top.
Dear Bostonboomer,
Honestly, I would never claimthat my perspective is “new” but in my opinion it belongs in such a discussion. In some sense the whole issue is not new…
Thank you votermom for providing the context to the youtube file. In fact she is saying in this article that she kept her name on the ballot in view of the general election (which is a honorable viewpoint). However, (at this time) she seems to accept the fact that the election would not count for the primary (if the article has not been taken out of context
).
Somehow, this again points to my first question: Why did she push for counting the votes only after the election. Maybe she thought she would win anyway? (I would not blame her for that). She could have made a stronger argument for her case if she would have pushed the issue before Christmas.
Thanks for the input (logging out for the moment) Hans
Yes, Obama won ugly and he gamed the system with the help of the press and the party leadership.
And it’s not just Michigan that you could reverse to get a different result. If Obama had won with Clinton’s wins and she had gotten red states with low caucus turnout, Obama would STILL be our nominee.
There’s no way the press and the party leadership would have let Clinton win they way Obama did. The press would have made a laughing stock out of Clinton thinking she could win without battleground states and with horrid exit polling after February.
And that why I’m PUMA.
Hans, the DNC fixed it for Obama since 2004, so it wouldn’t have matter how forcefully Hillary argued for FL and MI before Jan.
Whatever she “pushed for,” the voters voted and should be respected for it and their votes counted. Ultimately, this is about the voters, not the candidates or what they may have argued at some date or other.
hans–apparently you didn’t read my reply.
“She meant that they did not count at that time because of the penalties from the DNC. She fully expected they eventually would. that’s why she left her name on the ballot…and also because it was the right thing to do.”
Nobody could have imagined that they would never be counted ever, in fact Obama’s surrogates did not argue that way at the RBC meeting, so hans, your criticism in my opinion is not valid, because Obama said they wouldn’t count at the time but later argued that they should.
I understand that other countries are interested in our process and have followed this election very closely. What I do not understand is the extent that they become involved. When I was given my team packet and the video, I was told someone would be coming in from Columbia to assist with my house party for team members. The guy that came was German and just here on a student visa, but he was donating his entire summer to BO. BTW, he, my neighbor and I were the only people who showed for the meeting. Once again, illustrating that until Oprah came to town, there were few SC converts.

In my opinion, the Democratic Party no longer exists.
Guys – Beware the Obama agitators are alive and well on this site – asking obsurd questions that cause you to go back and research to prove your point, on top of other “innocent” questions.
This from a commenter at riverdaughter (Confluence blog):

Why can’t Obama control his brownshirts? Could it be because they’re doing exactly what he wants them to???
Welcome to Obamanation.

The Democratic Party no longer exists.
The Barack Obama campaign released its latest campaign slogan: “If you can’t win, quit.”
Immediately after its release, chief campaign strategist David Axelrod sought to clear up any misunderstandings about the message of the statement.
“Obama really means ‘quit’ in the metaphorical way. In other words, quit meaning try harder, ex post facto, to circumvent, eradicate or misappropriate to himself the victory of the other.”
The Democratic Party died on May 31, 2008.
Dear Garychapelhill,
I did read your reply… I still disagree about the interpretation of her statements (youtube file and article). In the above youtube clip, HC even explicitly says (now citing her full statement):
“I personally think it did not make any difference whether or not my name is on the ballot. You know, it is clear this election is not gonna count for anything”
It is hard for me to read this as “Eventually they will of course count and for this reason I leave my name on the ballot”
You may be right that the outside perspective on the election is different and might lead to different conclusions. I still try to base my arguments on form ground…
P.S.: I tried to read carefully all responses but I do start to loose a bit the overview. Thanks for the interesting discussion anyway.
P.P.S.: My interest comes from the fact that I will work in the US this Fall.
You all are forgetting the deliberate efforts by Obama and the DNC to depress turnout in the last states. That is just as bad as the deliberate disenfranchisement of FL and MI. That is appalling. And it extends beyond the Obama campaign to include the MSM and the liberal bloggers. There is no excuse for that at all.
Pragmatist – You are right. It is the “Obama for America” Party now. The fundraising mailer I received states as much. Nowhere on it is there any indication that Obama is a Democrat.
There is no more Democratic Party.
Hans – You’ll love it here. Obama is importing workers from Europe, I see. See you in the fall.
PUMA
hans, Even if I give you your point(which I don’t), how do you address all of Obama’s fraudulent activities? you are changing the subject just as the trolls we’re used to. If you do not agree with our responses end of discussion. there is no need for you to go on with the point. If you do we will have to ask you to leave. I lived in Europe for three years and well imagine the press there is falling all over itself to promote obama. I appreciate you trying to dig a little deeper, but spouting off talking points is not the way to do it.
It is not personal. That is your big mistake. THe Democratic party fixed it for Obama,so they are now for rigging elections. If I don’t vote to repudiate Obama and his corrupt politics, America will lose its right to a fair election. It won’t be lost with a lot of noise, but it will be lost, because there won’t be a party that stands up for it. THe Democrats have become the Republicans.
Oh, Hans. Even Lord Kos himself was saying that FL and MI would count eventually. Everyone knew they would, and they did. And they were counted in a way that is fundamentally undemocratic.
You can interpret isolated quotes however you want, but Hillary was consistent in saying that she would fight for the seating of FL and MI. There were also record turnouts in both states. And Obama taking his name off the ballot was a coordinated effort with other campaigns (the Iowa Independent had a story on it).
But despite the facts, Hans, what you are fundamentally saying is that legislators have the power to deliberately disenfranchise innocent voters. After all, it wasn’t the voters who changed the date. You can hold onto your rules argument all you want, but by doing so you have to accept the consequences: legislators and Party leaders can chose which votes to count. Your “form [sic] ground” argument makes your view on democracy pretty scary, but at least you are sticking to your view that deliberate disenfranchisement of innocent voters is fine if legislators and party leaders say so.
I’m wating for tokyorose57 to show up and ask us questions.
Hi – I’m posting from Japan! Why do you want to vote for 100 years of war? In my country, we do not do that.

I don’t like McCain’s policies, but the undemocratic nature of the system needs to be rejected. We’ve had Bush v Gore and Ohio ‘04 and now this. The slow degradation of fundamental principles of democracy is just as scary as anything McCain will do.
Also, a vote for Obama is a vote to approve of the way the media chose the candidate. This is another troubling thing. I’m undecided so far, but Obama and co have perverted democracy and that is making it hard for me to accept his nomination. It’s not disappointment, it’s democracy.

Gary – this is a great post!
thank you
I am consistantly amazed at the argument that “millions of voters stayed home because they were told the election would not count…”
Where is the evidence of this? Both MI and FL had record primary turnouts. And why is it presumed that the voters who stayed home were Obama voters? Wouldn’t Clinton voters have gotten the same messages and stayed home? More amazing than all of this is that the MSM accepts and repeats these specious arguments.
I wonder why Giuliani isn’t claiming that the Iowa results for the Republicans aren’t valid because he never put his name on the ballot there to begin with?
I think I’m going to contest all of the results because my name wasn’t on the ballots in any of the states. As far as I’m concerned, I would have won because my voters were confused when they didn’t see my name on the ballot and voted for someone else. Take away all of their delegates and give them to me! See you in Denver folks! I have to get working on my acceptance speech.
I am just reading all this and it all just makes me sick to my stomach I knew it happened and knew there was nothing we could do about it but to hear it all again and in this much detail just makes me so sick and mad all over again and that is why they will never get my vote..(obama)
He would have taken his name off the Florida ballot as well. Except they have a provision there that if you aren’t on the ballot
in the primaries, you can’t be there in the GE either.
So, the fact that he only took his name off in MI but not in Fla only makes his intentions crasser, harder to justify.
As to him getting delegates out of it anyway – I am still waiting for
the Michigan delegate I ordered from DNC. After all, I wasn’t on the ballot either.

Gary, you keep hitting them out of the park, as do the rest of The Confluence writers. I think it is very important not to let up on these issues — election fraud, disenfranchisement of voters, RBC rule violations — hence, an illegitimate nominee. That, taken with the shocking lack of qualifications and a shiftiness on policy, gives Obama absolutely no credibility as a candidate.
Mawm — you (aka Gary) made a great comment re the manipulation of the primary and looking at this whole season through that lens. Yes, it all makes sense in a very twisted way, doesn’t it.

I can picture a cheap office somewhere in Calcutta or Bombay set up with workstations, a list of the day’s talking points posted on a chalkboard, and a bunch of former tech-support workers slaving away with a quota for each blog they are assigned.
The real deal is that General Electric rejected Clinton a long time ago because of her position on the Bush/Chaney 2005 energy bill, and congress/super delegates followed suit.
General Electric does not want to go green. They want to litter the landscape with nuclear power plants. Obama is a whore to nuclear power and has no energy plan to combat global warming, other than nukes. Clinton wanted to use wind and solor, but there are no big buck for big business in this plan.
Also, Time Warner has plenty of Saudi investers that want to keep us addicted to foreign oil. This is CNN’s angle for trashing Hillary. Clinton’s plan was to replace foreign oil w/ biofuels and clean coal technology, to get out of Iraq and focus on the real terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakastan.
Obama was not in the senate when it voted to go to war in Iraq, but capitalized on Clinton’s war vote to bolster his claim that he was the more trustworthy in getting us out of Iraq. The truth is that he has no plan and is most likely to maintain the status quo, as the democtratic congress has been doing, while pointing fingers at the republicans.
The irony is that for months, all of the media outlets have been telling us that Obama is more progressive than Clinton, which clearly is not the case when it comes to sound energy alternatives. This is exactly why Gore’s endorsement of Obama was so hypocritical and probably why he withheld it for so long.
All you have to do is follow the money!!!! The Dems are as much a bunch of big whores, as the Republicans. What isn’t clear to me is whether the corporations really want Obama to win the general election or whether they want McCain. Its too early to tell. They may be holding their cards close to the vest until the convention is over. I’m sure that they want to make sure that Clinton is really out.
If the corporations want McCain to manage the Iraq war, he will win the general election. If not, they may continue to jam Burky down our throats. It’s really a matter of who they think can make them more money through their management of the war. Neither Burky, nor McCain will get our troops out of Iraq. Don’t buy this bull shit for a second that Obama will get us out of Iraq. He has already flip flopped on this one several times. It is not by accident that George Soros, a big Obama supporter, has recently bought significant amounts of stock in Hallaburton. He has been flushing Obama’s and the DNC’s couffers for a while now. Now Burky and the DNC have combined funding. I’m sure that this makes it easier for Soros!!!!
Also, it was interesting how universal healthcare was not part of the capitol hill gals check list. I believe that corporate america (i.e. pharmicutical industry/ health insurance companies) does not want universal healthcare. I bet you could check every one of Obama’s senatorial endorsements and find a financial link to one or more of these industries.
They don’t want the people to have anything, and Clinton was too forthright about her populist intentions. It got her the popular vote despite the false media spin, but it was her own party whores that sold us all down the river on healthcare and green energy policy!!!!
I just read that Obama has officially backed out of the pledge he made to take the public financing route.
John McCain has been a leader on campaign finance reform.
Obama is very regressive on this issue.

myiq2xu,
No they are frat boy college students that have, for their hard work, been promised a text-message from Scarlett Johansenn.
Mawm,
I read that this morning and I think they are releasing it today to avalanche over the WaPo editorial today that says that an Iraqi official having met with BZero can’t tell any difference between his policy and that of McCain’s.
It is BZero’s usual tactic, try and cover one thing up with another that in the long run won’t cause as much long-term damage. Divide the media coverage.
OMG Prolix – do you have a link for that?
That is something I would like to write about.
It appears that someone who has since been deleted took exception to some of my remarks earlier. i.e.
“If this country is so damn fragile that 4 years of John McCain will bring it down then so be it. IMHO it is in far more danger with Obama in the Oval Office. ”
The suggestion was then made that I wasn’t a Patriot or a good Democrat.
My remark was made to show how silly the fear mongering about McCain in the oval office is and how I, speaking only for me think Obama in that office is far more dangerous.
Quite honestly, again speaking only for me, I believe this country is strong enough to endure 4 years of either of these sadly deficient men. Remain unscathed? That’s another question.
I am no longer a Democrat so bad or good doesn’t apply. As for my Patriotism, Republicans have for years told everyone that unless we supported their agenda we were not patriots.
I am secure enough in myself to not give a damn if some anonymous pinhead on some blog questions my patriotism. I am human enough to wonder why said anonymous pinhead would bother to do so. And then I remember that this was an Obamatroll. They are offensive, insulting and nasty just because it suits their nature. Foul little critters, every damn one of them.
kenoshaMarge – Good for you.
Personally, I laugh at the insults. I love it when they say “You’re no Demcrat!” As if I’ll feel wounded to the core.

well, i don’t think obama or his team is so all-seeing that they took a dive in MI to eventually steal delegates at the RBC meeting six months later. i think they took a dive because they didn’t want to get their asses kicked by hillary. they just got lucky when the DNC decided to anoint The One™ without benefit of actual, like, VOTES and stuff.
If Chris Matthews is so convinced about the existence of the Bradely effect; why hasn’t he questioned Michagan’s methodology of utilizing exit polls to give Obamo delegates and take some away from Hillary? Is this the one state in play where there is no Bradely effect?
Hans (if that is your name) we need to put something to rest about the DNC saying that the MI & FL votes “don’t count” and that is: the DNC does not run the elections; the states do — for both the primaries and the general election. In both MI & FL the states held elections, people actually came out and voted in record numbers; and the MI & FL Secretaries of State certified the results. So, when the DNC said that the votes “don’t count” that only means that the DNC was not going to count the votes, not that the elections were invalid or were only “beauty contests” — they were real elections with real results. The DNC “not counting” the results of same is the very definition of disenfranchisement. So, Hillary’s comment that you give so much credence to ONLY referred to the DNC’s undemocratic decision to “not count the votes” and had nothing to do with the validity of the elections themselves. And, btw, if you really are from Germany, I’m not trying to insult you with this as a lot of Americans don’t seem to know that the states, and not the DNC, run the elections either — and coincidently, they all seem to be supporting Obama.
Honora — have a great time, but don’t go crazy in Amsterdam (wink, wink) — ya’ got kids now!
I just can not get over the blatant hypocrisy of these women lifting Hillary’s agenda and claiming it as their own. Who wants to bet Obama “endorses” it, and MO stumps on it?
Mawm — check out TalkLeft — BTD posted how it is a “good move” by Obama for not taking the public financing & most of the commentors agree.
angie- I will try, but who can blame a girl for a brownie or two. Melanie, I agree , Hillary owns that agenda, it doesn’t fit Michelle. The sun never sets this time of year, off to a beer hall love ya all.
Good News Everybody!
Taylor Marsh just let us know that “it is not a crime to be a Muslim.” But, of course, ” not yet, not until – WE – those that don’t support Obama tries to make it one. ”
The two Muslim ladies that were escorted by Obama thugs from the backdrop of his latest Coronation will probably be glad to hear it.
Thanks, Plural and Prolix!
Must run out now. Enjoy the day, everyone. Ignore the trolls. Stay strong. PUMA!
Jeff Greenwald is still looking for Obama.
“Meanwhile, has anyone seen Barack Obama?
The two presumptive presidential nominees have differed over the issue. A senior aide to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., recently indicated the senator would support granting immunity to the phone companies. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., was among the most vocal opponents of immunity in the Senate debate last year. . . .
A spokesman for the Obama campaign didn’t return phone calls or emails seeking comment for this article.
If Obama remains missing for much longer, it may be necessary to issue an Amber Alert for him.”

angie, thanks for the tip. I totally avoid that place now. Public financing of campaigns is a progressive issue. The fact that they are applauding Obama’s flip-flop means that they are complete hypocrits.
Again, John McCain as been a long-time advocate of campaign finance reform.
Obama has been a long-time advocate of voter suppression.
It’s an upside-down universe this year.
it may be necessary to issue an Amber Alert for him
..or start pasting his picture on milk cartons..
If Hillary doesn’t get the nom, I am voting McCain.
Please do the same. Some people don’t like Obama because he is a dirty pol. Some people don’t like Obama because he is an empty suit. Some people don’t like Obama because he likes to use people as speed bumps for his bus. But some of us see him as the most dangerous figure to have ever tried to rise to power in our country. I don’t know how to convey the dread this guy instills in me. I know a lot ( A LOT) of people feel this same dread. But I know a lot don’t.
Think of who this guy is… he has no moral compass whatsover (I know, so what– neither does Shrub). He picks advisors whose politics are merry-go-round to
downright abhorrent (I know, so what–so did Shrub).
He has a reprehensible thirst for power (even more than Shrub). He uses blackmail, extortion, disenfranchisement, race-baiting, thugs to get his way.
PLEASE do not sit this one out. If it comes down to
McCain or Obama… please vote to keep Obama from further festering on our watch. Never again. No more Bush, and no Weed sprouting from the ruins of our party.
garychapelhill: No kidding.
Money: present
People: absent
But he can be found at every photo op like Tim Russert’s funeral.
Okay – wait until you read this crap!

Carol, that’s nothing compared to what my congressman has done. He’s under indictment for bribery … remember him? William ‘cold cash’ Jefferson? He’s a friend of Obambi too and a very close associate of clyburn. Folks in this district voted his big backside back in there, he sits on NO committees now. He just announced he’s running for his 10th term.
Taylor Marsh has her own reasons for capitulating to Obama so fast, but there’s no reason for the rest of to do so. Brass-nuckle politics seems to be the only thing that gets Barack’s attention.

Blitzer: When will Bill Clinton back Obama?

From CNN Anchor Wolf Blitzer
Blitzer: How active will Bill Clinton be on the trail for Obama?
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Bill and Hillary Clinton attended the memorial service for Tim Russert at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington on Thursday. That was the first time I have seen them since Senator Clinton dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Barack Obama. She was very enthusiastic that day. It dawned on me yesterday that we still haven’t heard the former President formally endorse Senator Obama. I am sure he will be on the Obama bandwagon openly and energetically fairly soon. But I wonder what’s taking so long. Then again, is it really all that long?

The audacity of nope – NOBAMA
Cobalt — as to the Greenwald item — Barracky’s top national security adviser (can’t remember name — the guy who owns the company whose employees got caught snooping at Obama’s passport) is FOR granting immunity to the telecoms too. So, no surprise they aren’t returning calls — Obama would like to just vote “present” on the issue.
Lets also remember where HansObot quote originated…
from an interview she gave to NEW HAMPSHIRE public radio.
Clinton was doing some minor pandering to New Hampshire voters — telling them that “Michigan won’t count” in the sense that it will not have the influence to determine which candidates remain in the race.
Hillary Clinton never told MICHIGAN voters “don’t bother to vote”. She never told FLORIDA voters “don’t bother to vote.” And neither did Obama, for that matter.
no one ever told people in either michigan or florida to not vote except for people like Donna Brazile and the RBC.
I believe the women Dem Senators leaping though hoops for Bambie and the ” National Security Advisory Group ” list I saw yesterday with every old Dem hack still breathing , lining up at the trough , is to show Hill the seriousness of old guard Dem “support” for Bambie. They are circling the wagons . So it will have to be a Bambie implosion to take him down . If by late Aug , there is no implosion bad enough to do so , Hill might take the VP. Though it would sicken me, it would be an huge victory on her part, because the Dem party want her gone….and they couldn’t do it. But until the balloons drop, BO certainly could have a scandal eruption too great for the press to stifle….let’s hope.
DAILYKOS idiots really have a JEDI EFFECT ON THEM —
THIS IS ONE OF THIER DIARIES
Barack Obama saves the Federal Government $80m and John McCain loses $80m
Barack Obama rejects federal aid of $80,000,000 in his first major move as a presidential candidate. And what does John McCain do: he squanders away $80,000,000 on what will more than likely be a futile attempt to become President. John McCain, why not join Barack Obama in saving the federal treasury this much needed cash. Together they save the government $160,000,000: just do the math. $80,000,000 + $80,000,000 = $160,000,000.
***SUGGESTION ****
Why did not obama just donate 270 million to some charity that he raised –oh he could not b/c he was spending 5 times more than hillary just to beat her —-
Okay, I know this is long, but it might help Hans and others to see what one newspaper said in Oct 07.

Five Dems pull out of state primary
Clinton will stay on Jan. 15 ballot but not Obama, Edwards, Richardson, 2 others.
Gordon Trowbridge / Detroit News Washington Bureau
Five Democratic presidential contenders removed their names on Tuesday from Michigan’s Jan. 15 primary ballot, angering state Democratic leaders and feeding Republican hopes of capturing the state in a White House race for the first time since 1988.
Barack Obama, John Edwards, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson and Dennis Kucinich — all trailing Hillary Clinton in Michigan polls — filed requests to remove their names from the ballot by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline, eliminating two of the top three Democrats from the Michigan contest. They are not participating here because Michigan broke national party rules by moving its primary election date before others.
Clinton will remain on the ballot, her campaign said.
Detroiter Anthony Thornton thinks Obama is making a big mistake.
“I think he would have gotten a lot of support because of Michigan’s large African-American vote,” said Thornton.
But, said Thornton, Obama “can’t garner that support if he’s not here. He can’t win the Democratic nomination if he can’t win here.”
-edit-
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick agrees that it’s a dangerous strategy, his spokesman said. He said Clinton’s decision to stay on the ballot recognizes Michigan’s importance in the national campaign.
But he disagrees with the decision by the others to withdraw.
“We aren’t just going to stand with Democrats just to be Democrats,” said Kilpatrick spokesman Matt Allen. “Given the position the state is in we definitely need to hear from both parities. If the Democratic candidates choose not to address the issues facing Michigan, it could be a big win for the Republicans.”
Great flip-flop on public financing today. He claims that his lawyer met with McCain’s people and they were not willing to negotiate. Funny, because McCain’s spox said they reaffirmed their willingness to abide by public financing “for the good of the country, but Obama’s rep. wasn’t interested, and said McCain could raise almost as much as Obama anyway.
Hmmmm…wonder who is lying here. Tell me, exactly, what this man actually stands for? Does he commit to anything and follow through? I have no idea who is really is: there is no “there there.”
Hi Leslie,
I bet we used to both “Buzz” around the same Chicago Based Hillary Bashing News Site. It’s amazing how many places I used to go that are now verboten to me. (German for our Sweetie Hans.)
Yessiree folks, looks like our Democratic majority led by intrepid FISA compromisers Jell-O Jay Rockefeller and Steny (Ho)yer are about to sell us out. Again. Someone explain to me again why we elected a Democratic majority to knuckle under to Bush? We all ready had Republican Majority to do that.
Our mistake was thinking they were spineless. What we have is a Democratic Majority every bit as corrupt as the Republicans and evidently so arrogant they think they can scam all the people all the time.
Okay, Mawm, here’s a response from another blog on Obama and $$:
_______________
What a bunch of crap! Democrats have never been good at raising cash for elections and Obama had no idea 2007 he would raise so much money… He made an intelligent tactical decision to win the general election: Period. McCain is just scared he can’t match it and the 527’s waiting in the wings are going to have a fight on their hands. On top of it now the PUMA dead-enders are scared Obama might actually be a good President. You can only change politics if you smash the old political rules first.

Fantastic post, Gary. I’ll probably find a way to link to it in an upcoming blog post. This is one topic that hasn’t been explored this way yet, that I’ve seen anyway. Great info, great writing. Thank you.
Gary:
Great post. Unfortunately, not enough people are aware of exactly what happened at that RBC meeting on May 31, as it’s been swept under the rug and barely reported in the media (the meeting was, but not the obvious rigging). Many usually-informed people that I know have no idea that this has even occurred, which is too bad, as it’s a real deal-breaker type of event. With all the atrocities that have taken place in this primary, this is really the only one that absolutely cannot be explained away as anything other than complete election fraud.
As for the argument that some posters give that the election in Michigan was flawed from the start and therefore the apportionment is the only fair way to resolve it, it’s clear that if that’s the case, the DNC rules would have permitted them to not award any delegates to anybody. But then Obama would not have gotten to 2118 on June 2. He needed those 55 uncommitted and 4 Clinton delegates (29-1/2 votes) to get himself to 2140 on that last primary day and to declare himsel the winner. He would not have been able to do so without those Michigan delegates.
I usually take the reverse-situation analogy one step further. If Hillary had removed her name from the Michigan ballot while Obama remained, then she lost the primary, then she was given all of the uncommitted delegates AND 4 of Obama’s delegates, then declared herself the winner by including those delegates, would the reaction have been the same or would all hell have broken loose? Would the media then have screamed and relentlessly dissected the entire RBC meeting in detail or would they have swept it under the rug and cheered Hillary as the winner?
Although there are plenty of reasons to justify not supporting or voting for Obama, the fact that the Democratic party is now the party of blatantly rigging primary elections on international television is all the reason I need.
I just wish there was some way to get this story out to a wider audience; some journalist with some scruples needs to be convinced somehow to jump on this story and get it out to the voters. It must be told. What can be done?
When is the next meeting where the DNC looks at the delegates? I thought there was another meeting before the convention.
So my question to all of you is how is he going to take out McCain??????
Only Hillary can beat McCain. Obama hasn’t got a shot in Hell!

I don’t want to say “rules are everything”. My basic point was (yes I am sticking to that point…no I don’t think I am changing the subject here?): Why didn’t they (you, HC, whoever) push for a change of the rules in the first place. I never wanted to conclude that in this messed up situation sticking 100% with the rules should be the right solution. Basically, I tried to say that there is no easy solution?

As someone who disagree with the RBC ruling because he thinks that niether MI nor FL should have counted for anything, I’m fascinated by the fact that Obama was able to steal some of Clinton’s delegates. While it angered me to see Ickes (who had a major role in stripping MI and FL of their DNC significance) argue in support of counting MI and FL it just seems moronic that the DNC recalibrated the overall count in lieu of simply giving Obama the uncommitted. Is the theory that this was a conspiracy that began in 2004? If so, please explain the msm narrative that framed clinton as inevetable and annointed? As you all probalby know by now, yes i’m a troll, but i wade through the confluence because you offer a perspective quite foreign from my own and I am interested in hearing the rational of your arguments. Delete me if you’d like, but I’m not trying to antagonize.
OH and in one last note “Black Agenda Report’ probably shouldn’t be cited as an authority on “black males,” seems to be rather shoddy actually.
Nathan:
If neither Florida nor Michigan should have counted for anything, Obama would not have had enough delegates to declare himself the winner on June 2, the last day of the primaries, which was the DNC plan. The Michigan uncommitted delegates and Clinton’s 4 (total 29-1/2 votes) put his total at 2140 on June 2, exceeding 2118 by 21-1/2 votes. That was why the RBC took the risk of committing election fraud on international TV. Obama could not declare that day without those votes.
The MSM narrative that framed Clinton as “inevitable and annointed” was merely a recital of the national polls at the time (meaningless then, meaningless now, and even meaningless 2 days before the election). The intent was certainly not a supportive one, but more like pleading with some other candidate to come forth to do something about it and aggressively challenge her. Clinton has been loathed by the media since 1992; if you don’t believe that, you really need to do some research.
Jmac,
I don’t see how he can argue for public financing of elections for years, and then just turn around and go back on his word just because he happened to raise more money than he thought he would. What a hypocrite.
Keisha: “To deny the fact that Obama would have cleaned up in places like Detroit or Ann Arbor is to deny reality.”
But he wasn’t willing to take his chances with a revote, was he? Even if we buy your argument that Obama removing his name from the ballot was, in some bizarre through-the-looking-glass way, standing up for Truth, Justice, and the American way, and that his only concern was to ensure fairness and representation for poor and working class people (the majority of whom voted for Clinton nationwide) and POC (a group that encompasses a hell of a lot of Clinton voters as well), what on god’s green earth was his excuse for denying revotes, which would have rectified the alleged problem?
How in the hell can you justify his willingness to deny these states representation? After all, the ‘reality’ is that he would have ‘cleaned up’ so isn’t it both bizarre and reprehensible that he was delighted to appeal to the dirty backroom political fixers rather than take his chances wih the electorate? God, we were down to 2 candidates by then, if he wasn’t willing to take his chances not only is he morally bankrupt and willing to violate any principle for his own advancement in a way that nobody else in America could get away with or would even try, but his internals must have been damn alarming. At an extreme stretch, you MIGHT get someone to buy the possibility that he would have won if hadn’t voluntarily removed his name from the ballot, as implausible as that sounds, especially considering Obama’s less than stelar record in concerning himself with democratic niceties (hello, Rep. Palmer). But the banana republic argument that he refused to allow a fully representative election to go forward not once but twice even though he was a shoo-in is a harder sell. (He didn’t want to embarass her by forcing her to suffer a humiliating defeat, so he just HAD to refuse to allow the voters of MI a voice, but somehow got tricked into allowing the RBC to arbitrarily assign him delegates based on, I don’t know, a coin flip or something?)
“You can only change politics if you smash the old political rules first”
Yeah, first the stupid ‘majority rules’ bleeding heart bs, then the whole ‘you need basic qualifications for the office,’ then ’sleazy political fixers with no progressive creds aren’t generally considered progressive,’ we’re smashing the dominant paradigm.

Precisely. This is why it is of the utmost importance that Obama does not win in November. This primary was rigged through and through from the beginning. Ask yourself why would the Democratic leadership (an oxymoron if I ever read/wrote one) allow two minorities to run against each other? Answer: Hillary made her presidential ambitions known way before Obama; they needed to stop her. Fighting fire with fire i.e., one minority against the other.
When has a candidate taken his or her name off a ballot and was awarded votes/delegates? This is lunacy.
McCain will not privatize social security, will not ban abortions, will not keep us in Iraq for 100 years let alone 4 more years UNLESS THERE IS A DRAFT. the plain truth is there are no more VOLUNTARY troops to be called over. GOT IT.
IT is your VOTE SO ACT like it. Don’t let anybody (Hillary included) place doubt in your mind. You are correct. The DNC can not be allowed to get away with running this primary like a third world dictator. We must fight with our votes. IT IS YOUR VOTE, SO ACT LIKE IT!

Thanks for writing this post. I’ve always felt Hillary’s experience showed through yet again when she remained on our Michigan ballot. I’m hopeful that John McCain will now win our state.
