Who is Barack Obama? Part 1

Katiebird has been asking this question for a while now. In particular, what, if any, full-time job has he ever had?  Katie even suggested a series comparing the life work of Clinton vs. Obama. I think that is a great idea, and I’ll do my best to do so. But I have discovered that it is hard to do since there is little from Obama’s bio to compare to Clinton. In fact, I think there are a lot of important questions that should have been asked and answered a long time ago. I thought I’d do my best to look into a few of them. This isn’t an easy task since the media refuses to look into his past in even the slightest detail. And the Obamanuts cry racism every time you start to dig a little deeper.

First let’s take a look at Obama’s official congressional bio:

OBAMA, Barack, a Senator from Illinois; born in Honolulu, Hawaii, August 4, 1961; obtained early education in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Hawaii; continued education at Occidental College, Los Angeles, Calif.; received a B.A. in 1983 from Columbia University, New York City; worked as a community organizer in Chicago, Ill.; studied law at Harvard University, where he became the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review, and received J.D. in 1991; lecturer on constitutional law, University of Chicago; member, Illinois State senate 1997-2004; elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 2004 for term beginning January 3, 2005.

We will probably never know much about his early life, so let’s focus on his education and professional life. It says that he “continued his education” at Occidental College in Los Angeles. The only reliable info on what he did while there was on Occidental’s own website and only stated that:

Obama attended Occidental for two years before transferring to Columbia University, where he completed his undergraduate degree in 1983.

It seems that Obama played basketball for the Division III Occidental Tigers, and was the team’s leading scorer in 1979. I am not sure if he was recruited to Occidental or if he decided to play ball after he got there. Probably the most in-depth account of his time there comes from a January 29, 2007 article in the LA Times:

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama is usually described as an alumnus of Columbia University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, and of Harvard Law School.

But the Illinois Democrat began his undergraduate education at Occidental, and the 1,825-student liberal arts college in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles isn’t shy about claiming him as an alumnus for his two years there (1979-81) on full scholarship. Perhaps, some think, it’s where his political and oratory skills were nurtured.

Despite the somewhat awkward facts that Obama transferred from Occidental and that his official website biography doesn’t even mention the campus, old friends and former teachers at the well-regarded 120-year-old school proudly described him as a serious scholar and a good athlete who helped the JV Tigers basketball team to an undefeated season.

Though some express surprise at his current prominence, classmates recall a slim, good-looking teen with a moderate Afro, a taste for Casa Bianca’s Hawaiian-style pizza (pineapple and ham) and a role in protesting college investments in firms doing business in South Africa during the apartheid era.

This article, by the way, is no longer available at the LA Times website, which is curious. I also wonder whether his scholarship was academic based or sports based. Obama himself has admitted that his grades in high school were less than spectacular. Anyway, I think Obama’s motivation for attending the school is interesting. In his own words:

In his 1995 autobiography, “Dreams From My Father,” Obama recounted how he was accepted into “several respectable” colleges but chose Occidental “mainly because I’d met a girl from Brentwood while she was vacationing in Hawaii.”

Make of that what you will, but to me it seems about right coming from someone who refers to professional women as “sweetie”.

Obama left Occidental to study at Columbia University. That move as well is shrouded in mystery. Again, from the same article above:

Anne Howells, a retired English professor, said she wrote Obama a recommendation for his Columbia transfer — even though he sometimes turned in assignments late.

“He wanted a bigger school and the experience of Manhattan,” she said. “I thought it was a good move for him.”

In his e-mail, Obama confirmed that he transferred partly “because Occidental was so small, I felt that I had gotten what I needed out of it and the idea of being in New York was very appealing.” But another reason was that he had many older friends who were graduating. College spokesman Jim Tranquada said privacy rules forbid releasing grades, but that Obama left in good standing.

As a professor myself I find that quote by Howells a bit cryptic. How can she have written a recommendation for a student to an Ivy League school and the only thing she can remember is that he “turned his assignments in late”? You’d think she’d have something a little more inspirational or even substantial to say about a former student.  Especially one who she recommended to Columbia, and who is also running to be this country’s next president.  I am curious about his grades as well.  I would think it would be quite difficult to transfer from a small liberal arts college to a prestigious Ivy League institution without impeccable grades and academic credentials.  Yet all the school says is that he left in “good standing”.  Obama himself refuses to realease any of his transcripts to the public

Another professor quoted in the above article was contacted later by reporters to help concoct their fluffed up bio of Obama from the period, but again, not much there. Either that, or what they found didn’t fit the narrative they were trying to create:

Mr. Boesche said that some of the reporters who call him up for an interview are disappointed, to judge from the fact that his quotes don’t always make the grade.

He estimates that around 10 different reporters have contacted him looking for stories; he hasn’t appeared in all of them.

Finally there is this quote, which I think sums up Barry’s first few years as an undergrad. And before anyone accuses me of bringing up prior drug use, it is a fact to which he has admitted. I hardly judge him for having smoked pot in college. I’m sure a lot of us probably did too. But this is the man who is running for President, and this is how people he went to college with remember him (from the LA Times):

A woman who knew Obama at Occidental but did not want to be identified said she remains surprised that “Barry” might run for president. “It was just different times then. People sat around and smoked dope and talked about how they would reform the world. But you never thought they would,” she said.

I hope that when people that I studied with remember me, it is for my actual accomplishments rather than late night bull sessions about “reforming the world”.  But that’s neither here nor there, because I am not running for President.

Up next:  “Who is Hillary Clinton? Part 1″  in which we will explore Senator Clinton’s undergraduate career.  Then after that “Who is Barack Obama? Part 2″  where I will try to determine just exactly what Obama got his BA in from prestigious Columbia University.

  1. Personally, I think the Obama camp either paid off & forced non-disclosure agreements to anyone that can prove who the REAL Barack Obama is.

  2. this is who he is: look at his handlers

  3. I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that Obama’s resume won’t stack up to Hillary’s.

  4. [Comment elided. We're not here to traffic in dubious smears. -- RonK]

  5. Obama could certainly waive confidentiality of his college records as easily as he could medical records or tax returns.

If he doesn’t, he’s asking for surprises, on terms controlled by the opposition. (And the DNC are going along for the surprise party.)

  6. Too small to see, but these energy advisors are who put him up to run with the seed money: Republican loser Bob Dole, Sen. Daschle (now ethanol lobbyist) John Rowe (CEO Exelon) and some Bush era EPA guy who is on the board of Conoco-Phillips.

Thats who Obama is. He is just the next iteration of that guy you want a beer with. (Latte, whatever)

  7. (Rowe and the Exelon CEO are not in this pic, they are listed on the energy page)

  8. His mom was a professional, his stepdad reasonably well off, his maternal grandmother was a bank VP, and he went to school on a scholarship? I’d guess he pulled that “I’m the son of a poor single mom” stuff to game the system then, too. I had a high school classmate who did that – her mom was a divorced doctor.

For a public figure, that does seem rather a murky paper trail.

  9. Bingo, dotcommodity. Whatever happened to “Unity’08″? Barack Obama IS Unity’08.

Under the bipartisan Health Care heading, btw, Mark McClellan is BO adviser Cutler’s research partner … Bush’s FDA and CMS chief … and Scottie’s brother.

  10. sister–there seems to be a pattern of people seeing him as a blank slate onto which they could project their lofty if at times misguided ideals. To me it seems as if he has lived a bit of a charmed life. Everything seems to mysteriously “work out” for him with little effort on his part.

  11. he’s an alien from the moon that turns into a bat each night where he visits several neighboring galaxies

turns into a bat each night where he visits????
?? does not compute?? I like the image though. thanks for making me smile.

  12. The only thing left for Obama to “change” is his story.

  13. …and if he’s from the moon is he technically an alien? I mean the moon and the earth are kinda the same “system” , It’s not a different planet…..makes me think

  14. (blushing)

I want everyone to know that I’m not hesitating to take FULL credit for this post.

Gary? Thank you very much for transcribing my thoughts!

** Gary — this is very well done. Seriously, thank you for compiling this information and using your superb writing skills to reveal Obama’s (apparently) deliberately obscured history.

It’s posts like this that make me believe that Obama’s campaign will ultimately fail. Once the rush of the primary elections is past everyone so inclined will have time to dig into previously hidden aspects of his life.

I expect that many people will be shocked to find out what a “Community Organizer” does. Or that Obama never was the lead attorney on a case.

Since the Democrats got cute and moved the convention to the end of summer, we’ve got nothing but time to dig into his past.

Gary, Thank you for showing us how it’s done!

  15. oh no, he got spammed….I kinda liked that one :)

  16. Sen Obama expects to make a call home tonight to see how many relatives he has left in the pipeline. Will be speaking to that uncle who has been in the attic since he got home from the Navy in WWll who will update him the names and occupations of those relatives whose “stories” have left to be told and how he can weave them into his future pandering.

Next stop on the campaign trail: a speech to be given at the Ringling Bros Circus.

  17. thanks Katie. I think when I start writing Hillary’s bio it might be a bit old hat. but I think it is worth repeating and very telling about what each was doing. (think about his time at occidental compared to her groundbreaking commencement speech for instance).

  18. I don’t see anything there that is overly concerning. I know another good athlete, Michelle Wie (who turned out to be a dud) graduated from the same HS in Hawaii. I’m certain that Barack repeatedly benefited from affirmative action programs and his biography helped him get in to any school he wanted. I may be wrong about that and will admit I am wrong when I see his grades and transcripts. But I’m thinking getting into Occidental was not that hard for a good student from a private school in Hawaii. Also, division III schools don’t give athletic scholarships. I’m not certain if they did in 1979.

  19. Pat–I think he feels like he can get away with stuff like that because there is so little info about his background. It really is startling to see how very little there is there. I can’t remember who said it, but I think it was a conflucian. something like Bush is the Emperor who has no clothes. Obama is the clothes that has no Emperor. Anyone remember who said that?

  20. I have a big connection to Obama’s past. I lived in Hyde Park, Chicago, and sold real estate in that neighborhood. And my old boss/broker was the listing agent on the Obama/Rezko property. 6 degrees baby!!!

  21. I don’t believe I would hire a nanny or a personal assistant with such an aversion to filling in huge gaps in a background check. Who would trust such an evasive person around their family? How is it possible to put anything but the worst possible construction on all these failures to disclose? The only way to put rumours to rest is for the Obama camp to come out with the facts of the Senators’ life, basic enough for any job application. Simply put, why trust someone in the White House you wouldn’t trust in your own house?

  22. ben–my point wasn’t to say that he was in any way a bad person, or into anything nefarious, just that his background bio is full of holes, and what is there isn’t very impressive. I imagine that any release of info would open him up to charges of benefiting from affirmitive action. Again, if that subject is breached the campaign tends to start screeching “racist” to whoever says it. I did not mean to imply anything in what I wrote. If anything I would appreciate it if anyone knows more, or can correct anything I wrote to please let me know…

  23. Millions of Americans are finding out about Obama.
Do you want to know the truth?

  24. He knows how to kiss ass.
He knows how to “count” votes.
He is a master at being dismissive.
He does not do his homework.
    He thinks who he is.
He knows a good thing when he sees it.
    He always tips at lunch.
He is afraid of his wife.
He cannot think fast on his feet.
He has already measured the drapes.
He feels this is his due.

  25. ben–mawm said in an earlier thread that his father knew rezko and that he sent him $200 as a gift when his sister was born. Looks like we’ve got several connections!

  26. “he does not do his homework” Love it!!!!

  27. Ben, Occidental does not give athletic scholarships, but are desperate for diversity. It is a very small, “cozy” private liberal arts college for local area private school kids.

I’d love to know what his “role” was in South African divestment, which is another thing that he claims. Big campus radical that he was…
    (snark)

  28. I just wrote the below statements on the other post but it creeped me out so I moved it here. Maybe reading what you guys have written so far will settle my sudden case of the heebie jeebies, twilight zone music playing.

I realize I am a former “bot”, but after I pulled away and regrouped, I thought I should check out his policies and accomplishments. There is really nothing, and I mean nothing. He has never really been in one office long enough to get anything accomplished, because after he has been there a few months, he is off to a new candidacy.

It is really unsettling when you think about it. He rose up from nowhere, and in just a few short years has almost made it to the highest office in the world. Crap, even though I thought the people who screamed antichrist were fruit loops, if you look at it from this view, it is a little frightening, reminds of the end of “The Omen”. Just kidding, but mainly because it unnerves the crap outta me.

  29. I was interested in the scholarship thing too because I read somewhere that he was not a very good student in high school, it is a bio on answer.com and although it is not a very legitimate source, the rest of it is quite glowing and positive.

won admission to the top-flight Punahou School, his grades were inconsistent and his commitment to bodysurfing and basketball was bigger than his interest in school.

    here’s the link:
    http://www.answers.com/topic/barack-obama

so that’s why I wonder about the scholarship. I was not aware that Occidental did not offer sports based scholarships(it seemed appropriate, he was a *star* player). I guess we would need to see the actual scholarship to see what the merits were for his receiving it.

  30. He has been handpicked by the Chicago political wheel. Axelrod is the face of Mayor Dailey. From the testimony given a at the Rezko trial (jury still out) this was the place to make money with the right connections. Anyone within spitting distance of the players knew exactly what was going on. Pay for play.

He was probably chosen as a result of that 2004 speech. Young, charming, not much of a record to attack, they chose him and backed his run while bringing the DNC around with new members to jack up the hype.

Deval was dress rehearsal here in MA. Both campaigns managed by the same agency and players. Same speech, same script, same backgrounds.

  31. Must have been the bodysurfing and basketball that hooked the undergrads.

  32. I have a half-formed idea for a blog post but I’m too busy to flesh it out at the moment. Here’s the jist of it:

This is the time of year when sportswriters start making preseaon predictionf for the NFL. Which teams will do well, which ones will suck, which rookies will shine and which rookies will sit, which young players will have breakout seasons and which stars of previous seasons are over the hill.

Back at the beginning of 2007, political writers and talking heads began doing the same thing for the Presidential campaign.

Many if not most of them treated Obama as a serious contender. In what rational universe is this possible?

In January 2007 Obama had been in Washington DC for only two years. His resume consisted of two speeches, one of which only a handful of people even heard. He had written two books and spent 8 years in a state senate, 7 of which he had nothing to show for.

While he wasn’t unqualified to be a Senator, he was a long way from overqualified for the job.

The Democratic field of known and possible candidates included Hillary (the supposed “establishment” candidate,) Gore, Edwards, J. Kerry, Dodd, Biden, and Richardson. If Lieberman hadn’t lost to Lamont in the 2006 primary, he would be a contender too.

In any objective assessment by cynical journalists, Obama should have been relegated to tier three or four with Kucinich (but ahead of Gravel.) Even Kucinich’s supporters knew he had no chance.

With his record, and the likely opponents he was facing, Obama should not have been considered a serious contender for 2008. His candidacy should have been seen as a practice run and a way to boost his name recognition.

Instead, Obama got coverage that money could not buy. Rolling Stone magazine and other national magazines and newspapers not only treated him like to top tier candidate, they completely ignored most of his competitors.

If Obama was truly a grass-roots candidate, he should have been completely off the media radar until right before the Iowa caucuses. But he was on their radar, quite noticeably. He’s been the Cinderella candidate for nearly two years now.

I want to know two things:

    1. Who was Obama’s fairy godmother?

    2. When does he turn back into a pumpkin?

  33. There are so many crazy scholarships out there for people. And remember in 1979 a year at Occidental was probably $8-10,000 per year. That’s just a guess. I’m sure at a young age he knew how to manipulate the system to get what he wanted. Of course then you have straight A student Hillary who did everything right and earned her place at Wellesley.

  34. I read somewhere that certain excerpts from “Dreams from my Father” were not completely true and that he had admitted embellishing somewhat for interest. Has anyone else heard that?

Also, he talks of his father as a noble man, but aren’t there rumors that his father was already married to a villager in Kenya when he met Obama’s mother? And that the whole details of the marriage are pretty sketchy. Not that this is Obama’s fault, but I think I would find it a little distasteful to write a book about my noble father who abandoned me and my mother, may or may not have married my mother under false pretenses. Again, just rumors, but he paints this pretty picture that doesn’t add up.

  35. We would all like to romanticize our lives to some extent; just to get over the fact that we are all only average human beings. At least speaking for myself.

Not to be mean, but his Mom was an only child, probably pretty much sheltered when she went away to school. Only 18 when she met Obama’s father who probably was a bit more worldly and she then found herself in a family way. He married her but they separated soon after and he returned to his homeland when Barack was around two. It suggests that he was the product of a naive young girl and a man who was enjoying the single life away from home.

That is a big justification for any kid to have to come to terms with in life. An absent father with a family elsewhere and a struggling mother. Romanticism is a given in this narrative.

  36. Gary–terrific job. A lot of research on your part. I’m a bit surprised that no one at Columbia remembers him or has been interviewed by the press. Do we even know what his major was? It seems a bit odd that he doesn’t have any close friends still from college or law school.

  37. I understand that, but wouldn’t one think that it would then be his mother that he gives kudos to, rather than an absentee father?

Anyway, he only graduated from Harvard 16 years ago, where are classmates itching to get their 15 minutes? I have not seen any.

Hillary has trotted out Wellsley suitemates.

  38. Kim: But that is part of his narrative; the fact that he is the product of two different worlds. It enhances the exotica around him. Rather than admit that it is what it is, he would rather assume the role of this world class exhibit of two cultures colliding and he is the result. Romanticism at its most cynical.

  39. Kim – In November 1960, Barack’s mother turned 18. She was already a freshman at the University of Hawaii.

That’s where she met Barack Obama Sr., who was then a 24 year old exchange student with a wife and two children back in Africa.

In February 1961, Barack’s parents got married, even though his father was already married and didn’t get a divorce. Barack was born in August.

    Do the math.

  40. Oooh, it’s getting better! Sorry to jump ahead in the biography, but the chat board on History Channel has a post that says Obama’s great-uncle–the one who supposedly fought under Patton–was actually in the Navy. Time for Obama’s handlers to help him get his stories straight.

  41. grayslady: Is that the same uncle who spent 6 months in the attic? I am surprised that the Navy was instrumental in liberating the death camps. I could be wrong but I thought it was the Army and ground troops.

  42. Correction: The Charles Payne in the Navy was unrelated to Obama. Apparently, there was a Charles Payne in the Army.

  43. Okay, I found my literature when I worked on his campaign.

He got a BA in Poli Sci specializing in international relations.

WEnt to work as an editor for Business Internation Corp from 83-84.

Worked as a Community Organizer in 84 in Harlem, NY.

In 85 moved to Chicago to direct a non-profit assisting churches to organize job training programs.

Don’t know how long he did this but the next thing in timeline is:

88-91 Harvard grdauted magna cum laude

90 Was an associate at Hopkins and Sutter

92 Worked a voter regsitration drive in Chicago called Project Vote registered 150,000 voters.
92 Worked at Miner Barnhill and Galland

  44. Looks as if Larry Johnson over at No Quarter is nailing the story about the “uncle” to the wall.

  45. 92 Lecturer at Chicago Law School

Received a bunch of community awards

96 Made Partner at Miner, Barnhill et al

  46. What is interesting about the coverage is that they thought it was cute to dub Hillary “Annie Oakley” when she spoke of how her father taught her to handle a gun. Wonder if they dare name Obama “Pinocchio” for misstating his family history?

  47. Obama is obviously not stupid and is most likely very intelligent. You probably dont graduate magna cum laude from harvard law because of affirmative action. It seems to me, though, that he just couldn’t settle in any where and do something for a long period of time.

  48. dotcommodity,

Interesting picture. Howard Baker has really aged and gained weight.

  49. Kim – Chicago Sun TImes’ reporter Lynn Sweet has written on a number of occasions re BO’s “use of literary devices” (i.e., creating “composite” characters) when writing his “Dreams from My Father” (yes, even though his father left him and his mother when he was 2, leaving his mother with the responsibility of raising him – except she was fortunate to receive the extensive assistance of his “typical white” grandmother).

  50. Sister of ye,

Barack had the benefit of affirmative action all the way through. He probably wouldn’t have gotten into Columbia and Harvard Law without it. I’m not saying that to denigrate him, it’s just a fact.

  51. Ben,

Why couldn’t Barack graduate summa cum laude? He was in the top 25% of his Harvard law class–not a stunning record.

  52. Well, it’s the Chicago Sun that has the family tree for BO w/ a “Charles W Payne.” So, if there’s an error, that’s the origin.

  53. Over and over….Obama’s lies have rolled out of his mouth so easily.

And when he gets caught – he merely issues a press release saying he “erred.” And that’s the END of it.
Like he did several months ago when WaPo exposed his lie about the Kennedys bringing his father to America.
And the Kennedys went along with the lie.
    http://www.talkleft.com/story/2008/3/30/13655/6958

The elite Washington establishment propped up a newbie senator to run for president for one purpose – to prevent a Hillary presidency.

But we vote for Experience – not an Experiment – and we won’t vote for Oblahma.

In all your coverage about the election, why is it that this information is NEVER your top headlines. You want to know why Hillary is still in the race? Take a look at this information…she’s obviously in the race because she is the most popular candidate in the general election and the MOST likely to win the presidency. Hillary isn’t staying in the race for her, as all you do is try to push her out, call her names and for the last three months over analyze why she is still running. If, after looking at this information, you still can’t figure out why she’s in the race, then I’d say there is a problem with you, not her, not those of us who want her to be our next President. At some point, we’d think you would actually report the fact that the most popular candidate in the race is also the one that the media and the party are discounting. At what point does the people’s voice ring louder than that of the machine?

    ———————————————————————————————————-

*Today’s Gallup tracking poll finds Hillary leading Sen. McCain by 3 points, while Sen. Obama trails the Republican by 3.

*The Rasmussen tracking poll shows Hillary beating Sen. McCain by 4 points, while Sen. Obama trailed by 3.

*The Newsweek poll released over the weekend also found Hillary topping Sen. McCain by 4 points, while Sen. Obama tied the Republican.

***These numbers speak to the breadth and durability of Hillary’s appeal in the broader electorate. She is strong nationally, as well as strong in the key battleground states that are likely to decide the general election.

*A new poll in Kentucky shows a stunning spread. Hillary is beating Sen. McCain by 9 points and Sen. Obama is losing by 25. Polls in Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania and elsewhere consistently show Hillary’s advantage in the crucial swing states.

*As primary voting draws to a close and Democrats weigh the importance of various metrics – pledged delegates, popular vote, swing state victories, momentum, etc. – the ability of each candidate to actually win in November must loom larger and larger in our minds. That, after all, is what this nominating process is all about.

  55. Grayslady,

It’s not true that no one remembers Obama at Columbia. I’ve read interview with his profs and classmates there. I have a huge collection of articles on Obama’s past history. The biggest treasure trove of information is at the Chicago Tribune. But I’ve saved articles from all over. I wrote this post about Obama’s early life awhile back.

    http://riverdaughter.wordpress.com/2008/04/08/barack-obama%e2%80%99s-double-bind/

  56. @bencarlson, 5:35 PM

“Obama is obviously not stupid and is most likely very intelligent. You probably dont graduate magna cum laude from harvard law because of affirmative action.”

Raw intelligence isn’t worth much if it’s not properly disciplined. And people hiring top grads from any law school–yes, even Harvard–will tell you that grade inflation is very real. Most new lawyers generally don’t prove their mettle for a couple or three years, although some of the old timers can gauge it pretty well right away.

  57. Obama has probably been “embellishing” his biography for years now.

Lots of people do (I don’t) and most of them are never caught because nobody checks.

If you were a “C” student but told people you got straight “A’s,” how would people know? If you told other people’s stories as if they happened to you, you wouldn’t get tripped up unless you forgot where you heard them originally.

Smart people can be really good liars because they keep the details straight.

But most of us aren’t in the national spotlight, with everything we say (or ever said) being vetted for accuracy.

Obama wasn’t in the spotlight before, but he is now.

  58. i don’t defend Obama. I’m just trying to find the right thing to hit him on. I always thought it was naive to say Bush was stupid. Clearly, he is not but he plays an idiot well on tv. But when comparing him to Hillary it’s startling how she outshines him.

  59. I hope that nobody comes away from this thinking that I am saying Obama is stupid. If anything he is exceedingly average. Because of that he has to exaggerate any accomplishments he does have. In contrast Hillary is brilliant, accomplished and has the bio to back it up.

  60. Sorry if this has been posted before, but it appears the account of Obama’s great uncle in WW2 may not be over.

PLEASE do not do this. When a bunch of people email the same addresses with the same text it doesn’t get read by anyone – it goes in the spam folder or trash. Immediately. Because it’s spam. If you have a specific complaint to a specific organization or want to express your opinion, send your personal letter, do not copy paste this generic thing – it’s a waste of time.

  62. Someone has done the side-by-side comparison-unfortunately, I can’t remember where online I saw it. But I’ll keep trying. It was really good because her side was full and his side had lots of space. Somewhat comical!

  63. Cinderella,

It should be. I think I’d rather have someone who is competent and hard working over a pot-smoker who coasts by.

Sounds like you want a cool President. Why do you hate people who are accomplished?

  64. Breaking news at the Washington Post. The Obama campaign’s co-director in Puerto Rico is a Washington-based lobbyist for the Puerto Rican government. I’ve already linked to the story at Katalusis, and I think we should all get this one out there. Here’s the WaPo link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/28/AR2008052802499.html

  68. Great post!

I’m seeing a common theme here with Precious…Pat, you’ve hit it on the head, especially with “He thinks who he is.”

    He is a Serial Confabulationist!

My God–does the man not know when to stop speaking shit about the “facts” in his own life?

Seems this has been a little habit of his, even back in the day…

“Ando (Punahou classmate) recalls a rumor he heard that Obama was the son of a Kenyan prince — a rumor that Obama himself confessed to starting at lunch one day, only to regret it later when he learned that his father, Barack Sr., was coming to visit the school.”

    http://starbulletin.com/print/?fr=/2007/02/08/news/story02.html

One confabulation I think people miss is that he WAS NOT a great basketball player! True, he finally made the Varsity team his senior year at his very privileged Honolulu high school, Punahou, where they were state champs in 1979.

BUT–he wasn’t a starter stud making a big impact. He said himself he was 7th or 8th string his senior year, playing gutter time off the bench. He often was at odds with his head coach, Chris McLachlin, about the amount of his playing time.

    http://www.truveo.com/Barack-and-Basketball-REAL-Sports-with-Bryant/id/352011087

Wasn’t he also dabbling in doobie about this time? Wasn’t that the excuse for why he didn’t do well academically? I personally don’t care but enough of this BS about what a baller he was…you can’t be a serious athlete like he claims and take up leafy inhalants of any kind.

He didn’t win any awards or recognition at Punahou, the private school assn (ILH), the state (HHSAA) or from the local papers for his prep basketball prowess. He didn’t receive a basketball scholarship.

He doesn’t even bother to correct any errors in his confabulations, either…
He graduated from Punahou in 1979–b/c he was an integral part of their state basketball championship, right?

Oh, but wait–he attended Occidental college from 1978 – 1980? What?
“The school also may have produced a future US President: Barack Obama attended the school from 1978-1980 and was the school’s leading scorer in basketball in 1979. Now, you did NOT know that. ”
    http://sportsreviewmagazine.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1431

Wow–I wasn’t expecting this. Can anyone confirm when Precious attended Occidental College and when he was their leading men’s basketball scorer? Or is this too mired in confabulation to untangle the lore?

His narrative gets weirder by the minute.

He certainly likes to “talk story about dis an dat.” The scary thing is when people BELIEVE him.

  69. I think Obama would make a terrific motivational speaker, and he’d probably make more money, be more in his element and be happier. Someone should tell him.

I have this creepy feeling that he sees “president” as more resume padding but doesn’t really think about the actual responsibilities the job entails. he’s probably already looking ahead to being an ex-president making millions giving speeches.

we’ve suffered through seven years, and will continue to suffer, from a ‘president’ that just wanted to be a big shot and one-up his dad, and had no particular qualifications for the job, or frankly interest in it beyond the trappings and the glory.

remember the headline from the British Daily Mirror back in 2004 – “How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?”

are we gonna be that DUMB again?

  70. Cinderfella: It’s established that Obama is a frequent and casual liar.

I don’t give a shit what his grades were, I want a President who knows what the fuck she is doing.

    Obama = clueless

    Cinderfella = brainless.

  71. I want a president that I can respect. One who is smarter than I am but has a strong element of commonsense running through her decisions.

I want a president who will go the distance in securing my freedoms and my security.

I want a president who can think on her feet.

I want a president who knows what the rest of us endure on a daily basis. The right to healthcare, education, opportunity, a decent wage.

I want a president who is transparent, who relies on people who are expert in their fields.

I want a president who will look to the future and knows that this future includes everybody.

I want a president who will ensure my nation’s place in the world and is humble in her approach.

I cannot envision it any other way.

  72. FYI – Cinderella, a.k.a. Olga Trollga (among other incarnations) has been assigned to scullery duty in the spam filter.

  73. @ bostonboomer, at 5:42

“Barack had the benefit of affirmative action all the way through. He probably wouldn’t have gotten into Columbia and Harvard Law without it. I’m not saying that to denigrate him, it’s just a fact.”

And how do you know this to be fact when you have no idea what his grades were? Despite your protestation to the contrary, you do mention affirmative action like it’s a bad thing.

I am loath to defend the corrupt Obama, but I strongly disagree with your assumption that because he’s black he’s received AA. Moreover, it’s well established that white women have benefited from AA more than any other group.

Nothing wrong with AA when it’s used correctly as to qualified individuals.

  74. garychapelhill, in your research did you find any details about BO’s claim of activism on divestment in South Africa? All I found so far is that he claims to have made a speech to students in which he was initially dragged off stage as “a physical metaphor for the voiceless black South Africans.” This, in my experience, does not qualify as real activism, but it looks as though he equates speech-making with actual work.

  75. Obama has a little problem with truth and reality.

BTW, anyone need a ride from the Boston area to the DC rally? Leaving late Friday returning Saturday evening. Room for two more.

  76. Then he should apply for the job he IS qualified for, a glorified motivational speaker.

wouldn’t he make a terrific Rev. Wright?

he could have a lucrative living selling people Hope, after all he is so good at persuading them first that there is nothing else for them in this life and they should instead put all their chips on the life that is yet to come. You know – the one after the messiah (that is him) delivers the real goods.

Forget universal health care. Forget social security. Settle for a nice hit of this Change You Can Believe In ™….it’s much better stuff.

  77. Robin, one of the articles I linked to mentioned something about his south african activism at occidental it was from the LA Times

He and others recall a strong speech Obama made at a campus rally urging South Africa divestment. Obama, in his book, considered that a big moment: “I figured I was ready, and could reach people where it counted,” he wrote. “I thought my voice wouldn’t fail me.” Still, Obama initially thought he had flopped.

that’s all I recall reading about that. It would be interesting to find the text of that speech, I couldn’t find it anywhere.

  78. and by “south african activism”, I mean the calls for divestment in the apartheid regime in South Africa. Sorry bout the lazy shorthand…

  79. This sounds awful but I have almost as much dislike for Obama as I do for Bush.

  80. I doubt if Obama was much of an activist. When he was at Harvard, there was a huge political controversy about diversity in the faculty. One black prof. ended up resigning over it. There were lots of student protests. Barack did is usually thing of playing both sides of the fence. He supposedly supported the protesters, but opposed their methods (sit down strikes, taking over dean’s office, marches). Basically he did nothing. That seems to be what he usually does–nothing.

  81. Sonya,

I read about it in a book on Obama. You could try that too. I don’t think affirmative action is a bad thing at all. I think it has been helpful to both women and minorities, although Republican administrations have hurt it a lot.

It’s true that I don’t know what grades Obama got, but I do know that he only graduated magna. That means he didn’t have the very top grades in his class although he did pretty well. Another way I know that Obama’s grades weren’t top notch is that he was given consideration for Law Review despite his grades. That is on the public record. Traditionally the editor’s positions had gone to the students with the best academic records. In the year Obama was elected that changed and they considered other factors in an attempt to diversify the membership.

In addition, Obama himself has admitted that he benefitted from affirmative action. I’ve heard him talk about it in several of his speeches even. You might try reading and listening too. It actually helps you learn things.

  82. Re: Obama as motivational speaker. Does anyone else here remember EST? Obama reminds me of Werner Erhard. I remember when EST was the big thing. But then it turned out to be a cult.

  83. bostonboomer–

I’m too young for EST but I’ve heard snippets about it.

You’re right on the $, though…I was just thinking about Precious and if he’s getting money from anyone affiliated with “The Secret.”

Aren’t they about the same depth of BS?

  84. garychapelhill – Thanks! I haven’t found anything beyond that one speech either.

  85. Dave, if you’re sick of it, the Internets is vast, I’ve heard, and it wouldn’t be hard for you to visit a site you’re not sick of.

  86. Hi, I saw a short piece by the BBC World service a few months ago. They interviewed some of his classmates from his old school in Indonesia. It intrigued me because some of them remember from back then how he always wanted to be President.
I also have a link to an article by a British paper on Michelle
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-517824/Mrs-O-The-truth-Michelle-Obamas-working-class-credentials.html

  87. Hi, I thought I’d just post an excerpt from the Daily Mail article linked to above

The rewards have been significant. Despite the image she projects on the Newsweek cover, Michelle owns an impressive collection of diamond jewellery, designer outfits and £400-a-pair Jimmy Choo shoes.

When she is wooing working-class voters, however, she favours austere black skirts and white blouses. “Our lives are so close to normal, if there is such a thing when you’re running for president,” she declared during a campaign stop in Delaware, shortly before her husband’s latest victories were announced.

“When I’m off the road, I’m going to Target [a U.S. chain store] to get the toilet paper.”

She did not bother to mention, however, that the paper, like the rest of the family shopping, is taken to an £825,000 three-storey red-brick Georgian revival mansion, set amid beautifully manicured lawns in one of Chicago’s most affluent districts.

Even the house became a source of controversy when it emerged that the wife of a Chicago slum landlord, Tony Rezko, helped them buy land to enlarge its grounds.

Renowned for leaving tenants of one of his squalid buildings without heat in the city’s brutal winter, Rezko now is facing federal corruption charges.

More contentious still was Michelle’s appointment as the £150,000-a-year vice-president of external affairs at the University of Chicago hospital in 2005.

It came only two months after Barack was sworn in as a U.S. senator, and was attacked by critics as a blatant attempt, critics claim, by the hospital’s hierarchy to curry favour with her husband, in an era when some politicians want to rein in the vast profits of America’s medical system.

They questioned why the wife of a committed Democrat would work for a hospital that has been accused of ruthless greed.

Michelle’s image was further tarnished in May 2006, when it was revealed that the centre – despite earning some £50million a year – had refused to treat a man who could not afford to pay his bill. He died.

All of which has led some political veterans to accuse Michelle of the very lack of compassion and moral scruples that her husband has lambasted in his Republican rivals for the White House.

  88. and this one: from same paper

Unlike Hillary Clinton, they point out, neither Obama has endorsed far-reaching healthcare reforms.

Michelle also is under attack for joining the board of a food company where she allegedly took part in a 2005 decision to close a pickle and relish plant in La Junta, Colorado, putting 150 mostly Hispanic labourers out of work.

    The small town was devastated.

“It totally amazed me when they closed it,” said La Junta Mayor

Don Rizzuto, who had believed that Michelle and her husband were “the champions of the little guy”.

In their most recently publicised tax returns, for 2005, the Obamas earned £800,000.

  89. Jean,

You may not have noticed, but this is a blog for people who support Hillary Clinton. We aren’t interested in lectures from fans of The Precious. There are millions like us who will never vote for him. It’s too bad you and he didn’t start worrying about that a long time ago, because now it is way too late. Now run along back to wherever you came from.

  90. this is rich

In his e-mail, Obama confirmed that he transferred partly “because Occidental was so small, I felt that I had gotten what I needed out of it and the idea of being in New York was very appealing.”

  91. Heres the man:.attends the church of Hate.

    The newest video from

This is truly the Trinity of Hell!!!

Obama’s Church: Hillary Cried Because White Supremacy Failed
[My transcription starting 19 seconds into the clip:]

Rev. Moss: We are delighted — he needs no introduction. He is a friend of Trinity. He is a brother beloved. He is a preacher par excellence. He is a prophetic, powerful pulpiteer [sic]. He is our friend, he is our brother. He is none other than Michael Pfleger. We welcome him once again…

[Skipping to 1:45 in the clip:]

Rev. Pfleger: We must be honest enough to expose white entitlement and supremacy wherever it raises its head. I’ve said before — and I really [don't] want to make this political, because you know I’m very unpolitical.

But [garbled] when Hillary was crying, and people said that was put on, I really don’t believe it was put on. I really believe that she just always thought ‘this is mine. I’m Bill’s wife. I’m white. And this is mine. I just gotta get up and step into [sic] the plate.’

And then out of nowhere came, ‘hey, I’m Barack Obama.’ And she said, ‘oh, damn, where did you come from?! I’m white! I’m entitled! There’s a black man stealing my show!’ [He mock sobs.]

She wasn’t the only one cryin’. There was a whole lot of white people cryin’!

I’m sorry, I don’t want to get you in any more trouble. The live streaming [the internet broadcast of Trinity's services] just went out again.

    [Leaves stage to standing ovation.]

Rev. Moss: We thank God for the message. And we thank God for the messenger. We thank God for Father Michael Pfleger. We thank God for Father Mike.

Not Reverend Wright, but a remarkable simulacrum.

In fact, the well known crackpot Reverend Pfleger is one of the very few white faces to grace the pages of the Reverend Wright’s Trumpet magazine.

As his introduction indicates, he is a darling of the Trinity Congregation and the Reverend Doctor Wright. And his replacement, Rev. Otis Moss, III:

“We thank God for the message. We thank God for the messenger.”

And one can easily see why.

Then 1 year after that, he’ll be unanimously voted as King Supreme of the Milky Way, which he’ll rename (at the behest of Rev. Wright) to the Hope & Change Galaxy.
