Hillary, our “Blue Kentucky Girl”

*Note* I originally had video of Loretta Lynn, but the you tube video was pulled before I could post : ( Emmylou Harris is a pretty cool second choice though….

In case anyone didn’t know, I’m a huge Loretta Lynn fan. I thought this song was appropriate as we wait for the polls to close in the Bluegrass State. As I’ve said before, I grew up in Appalachia and I lived for two years in Kentucky while I was in grad school, so I feel I can speak as an “honorary” Kentuckian at the very least. Kentuckians are proud of their state and the many facets of their rich cultural heritage. Obama, however, seems to think that Kentuckians are too stupid to recognize chain emails and media bias:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, facing a likely defeat in next Tuesday’s primary election, won’t travel to Kentucky before the voting, but said he hopes to have much more time to win over Kentucky voters before the November general election.

He also blamed Fox News for disseminating “rumors” about him and said that that and e-mails filled with misinformation that have been “systematically” dispersed have hurt him in Kentucky.

He also, as our current President has done repeatedly, demonstrated that an Ivy League education isn’t what it used to be…

“What it says is that I’m not very well known in that part of the country,” Obama said. “Sen. Clinton, I think, is much better known — not only because of her time in the White House with her husband — but also coming from a nearby state of Arkansas.

I guess you don’t need to pass 4th grade geography to get into Columbia these days because Obama’s home state of Illinois actually borders Kentucky. But let’s give him a break. As I’m sure Obama would attest, Chicago is the only part of Illinois that really matters. The rest is all icky. You know, full of working class types and uneducated buffoons. Down there at another great Confluence, that of the Ohio and the Mississippi, people are a lot different than his urban base, and apparently Obama just doesn’t “get” them.

Meanwhile he panders to the very same voters he accused of being “bitter” and “clinging to religion”

Obama has been trying to introduce himself to Kentuckians using a series of biographical TV ads, as well as fliers, including one that shows him at a pulpit in front of a church’s cross and pipe organ.

I think Kentuckians are way too smart to be bamboozled like that. All you have to do is take a look at one of Kentucky’s favorite sons to figure that out. Daniel Boone is to Kentucky as Washington is to all Americans. He was a trailblazer (literally), Revolutionary War hero, and a legend in his own time. Here is how he described Kentucky when he first arrived, in his own words:

It was on the first of May, in the year 1769, that I resigned my domestic happiness for a time, and left my family and peaceable habitation on the Yadkin River, in North Carolina, to wander through the wilderness of America, in quest of the country of Kentucky, in company with John Finley, John Stewart, Joseph Holden, James Monay, and William Cool.

We proceeded successfully, and after a long and tiresome journey through a mountainous wilderness, in a westward direction, on the seventh day of June following, we found ourselves on Red River, where John Finley had formerly gone trading with the Indians; and, from the top of an eminence, saw with pleasure the beautiful level of Kentucky.

We found everywhere abundance of wild beasts of all sorts, through this vast forest. The buffalo were more frequent than I have seen cattle in the settlements, browsing on the leaves of the cane, or cropping the herbage on those extensive plains, fearless, because ignorant of the violence of man. Sometimes we saw hundreds in a drove, and the numbers about the salt springs were amazing.

I think that our Blue Kentucky Girl has a lot more in common with Boone than the Senator from the neighboring state. Boone’s sense of adventure, determination, love of country, and true American grit are the same qualities that are attracting many Kentuckians to vote for Hillary today. So while we wait, here’s a salute to American Heroes, past and present.

  1. Just a heads up, we got linked by the New York Times in an article on Hillary reaching out to bloggers.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/20/us/politics/20web-seelye.html?_r=3&oref=slogin&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

I hope we don’t get another late night infestation. Maybe we’ll get some Hillary supporters this time.

  2. Sorry, Gary, going to read your latest handiwork now.

  3. Ah, {{Gary}} — Hillary IS my hero. Thank you for this post. It exactly matches my mood.

  4. I’m heading out in a few minutes to take people to polling places, and help them get their ballots dropped off. If you have some time and can afford the gas, please join me.

  5. Awesome. Hillary, her life, and her campaign really are such stuff as country western songs are made on.

  6. Great post, Gary, and I love the song. One thing I’ve really been enjoying about the Applachian primaries is the music. I used to play bluegrass mandolin back in the day and I love that mountain music. May I also suggest “Blue Moon of Kentucky?” The Bill Monroe version is great and the Elvis version is sublime.

  7. thanks katie, bb. I love the music too. I am a total Loretta fanatic, that’s why I went with the blue kentucky girl, but I did consider blue moon of kentucky too…here’s the video I found:

  8. Some of these assertions are pretty sketchy. Obama thinks people in KY are too stupid to “recognize chain e-mails and media bias?” How many people in KY (or elsewhere) still think Obama is a Muslim?

This just sets up a pair of ridiculous narratives. Rumors, e-mails, MSM, or whatever else can disseminate damaging messages about candidates to intelligent people. Maybe you are operating under the assumption that anything put in a chain e-mail automatically becomes false and all smart people know that.

It would be wrong to assume people in KY are voting for HRC because they hate BO based on lies. There are plenty of good reasons to vote for HRC. It would also be wrong to pretend BO is “blaming” his defeat on KY on “e-mails/fox.” Suggesting that they exist and are harmful is simply a statement of the obvious.

  9. Bill Monroe singing Blue Moon of Kentucky

And here is the Elvis version–one of my all-time faves.

  10. Gary,

It’s hysterical the way Bill Monroe keeps speeding up through his tunes. My mandolin teacher used to really lecture me about that, but of course you can’t fault the master.

  11. ryan, give me a break, I think that Obama’s excuses about losing KY are lame, but also very patronizing. and that’s what they are, excuses. he has a habit of blaming voters when they don’t vote for him, and I’m just pointing that out. As PA, WV, and now KY prove is that the voters aren’t buying it…

  12. BB ha…did we post the same video?

  13. I can’t believe that the MSM hasn’t called this out on Barack Obama:

He says that he gets more votes when he actively campaigns and does the meet & greet - yet blames Fox & viral emails, that “Hillary is more well known there” and of course “racism.”

SO WHY DON’T YOU friggin GO THERE THEN instead of whining about how it’s Hillary’s and Fox News’ fault???

  14. Ryan, I see your points, but if you listen to what BO actually said about Kentucky, you have to admit it sounds like blaming, and pretty condescending too. Anyway the post is meant to be snarky. We don’t take it all literally.

  15. ….and elvis could sing the phone book and it’d sound good…

  16. Gary, I think we did, but go watch the Elvis one. It’s very nice. Elvis was a huge Bill Monroe fan.

  17. already did…great!

  18. A little OT, but I got elected a Hillary delegate for NC last weekend. Skeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! I tell my friend that whenever he sees Hillary’s delegate count, that’s really me on TV/Interweb.

I’ll be at a birthday party tonight with lawyers (…well, like I’m not one-to-be…), so I won’t have my usual hook-up to CNN in my head. I know KY will be a quick call and OR will take alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll night.

Can’t wait to come home to the “cocktail” party on here…

  19. Oh good. I still love Elvis. I still remember when he suddenly burst into our consciousness. One thing about being old, you can remember the whole history of rock ‘n roll.

  20. captsfufp,

You already told us yesterday, but congratulations again! you are going to have to wave a Confluence sign on TV.

  21. congrats capt!

  22. OMG, check it out. I’m not going to link to it, but (via BTD) DHinMI has a post up at the Cheetos place entitled “Appalachia’s last chance to show it doesn’t have an Obama problem.”

It’s the voters’ fault! It’s one of the things that drove me into Hillary’s arms. But they just can stop, can they?

  23. JUST HAD WORD FROM HQ

    CALL OREGON NOW!!!

we have until 8pm pacific time for those ballots to be in the ballot drop boxes. go call!

  24. my blog is down, I think it got overwhelmed with traffic since at least four other blogs picked up my story on Obama and his contradictory statements on Iran.

So I am making calls for Hillary. You can too.

    Call for Hillary

    c-

  25. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr! I just got an e-mail from John Edwards asking me to support Barack Obama. No, John, I don’t think so.

  26. Hi Gary! Love your posts, I’m glad you keep posting here.

  27. Check it out people- two sites re the “movement” or Project Turndown…..

Please pass these on to feminists and Hillary supporters - if you have limited time read the second one for sure and stay tuned - BOOKMARK IT

  28. BB, hit “unsubscribe”. It’s important that they know you don’t agree. Seeing the raw numbers of unsubscribers shows them.

  29. anybody know why results are coming in from KY already if polls aren’t closed? is it the EDT/CDT difference?
    she’s up 63-31 so far!

  30. Gary, I love you!

This brought tears to my eyes.

I won’t forget the Maya Angelou photos either.

Go Hillary - I pray everyday for you!

  31. Sounds like Kentuckians have BO’s number from the exit polls I have heard so far. What an abysmal candidate the DNC/D party is trying to stick us with.

    Great music, thanks again Gary.

  32. gq, I already unsubbed. And I wrote him a nasty letter the other day.

  33. its down to 52 44 now, but that’s with 29% of Jefferson county in and hillary’s actually winning there 50-47. That should be a stronghold for him

  34. RD & CO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Breaking right now——–!

You just made the New York Times for Hillary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hugs, RD—this is your “public” medal of honor!

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/20/us/politics/20web-seelye.html?hp

  35. That Elvis vedrsion is good, but that Bill Monroe version really spoke to my Appalachian heart - again tears in my eyes.

Yeah - bmy stupid clingy bitter hick advanced degree in mathematics Appalachian heart.

  36. Hi guys, I’m back. Do we want to break out the cocktails in this thread? The music’s great, btw, gary. Or do we need a new cocktail thread? I didn’t have much luck digging up music from Oregon. I guess they’re more into kayaking ot something.

  37. Whoo-hoo! Maybe when MoDo retires, they’ll give me her old office.

  38. Sarah,

Yeah, I love that high, lonesome sound.

Hey was that you on the Corbett show yesterday?

  39. RD– We could start a cocktail thread after Hillary win KY.

Please check out the DHinMI post I mentioned above. It’s priceless!

  40. Riverdaughter- did grunge spread as far as oregon? don’t know about any other indigenous music : ) . I’m watching the results from KY. its 52-44 now, but that’s with 40% of Jefferson co. (Louisville) which should be his biggest stronghold.

  41. Donna Brazile nut is on with Wolf Blitzer right now and they are asking her about sexism. Of course she’s discounting it.

  42. I have never been to Ky but understand it is beautiful.

I always thought if the government placed their gold at fort knox in ky the people must be smart and trustworthy.

  43. Hi Gary - do you mean grunge rock? If you do, I’m thinking Oregon being a close neighbor of Washington (Nirvana home state) that probably it did.

  44. I am SICK of the way so-called “progressive” bloggers are treating Hillary supporters.

First, Alegre was “warned.” I was furious. Alegre has taken so much abuse for her support for Hillary Clinton, it’s unimaginable.

Today, I was “warned” by Todd Beeton at mydd, and am not allowed to post comments there until I accept the “warning.”

I will not do so; so I am therefore banned from commenting at the site. My crime? Including a link to a wingnut site in a LIST of links to sources for my comment, some of them progressive sites like NO QUARTER, some of them mainstream media sites like CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, some of them WALL ST. JOURNAL. Amazingly, I have been banned from posting at mydd.com because these are “wingnut” sites!

These people have gone mad. They are now authoritarians, totalitarians, and jack-booted thugs, in service to their chosen son, Obama.

    What a travesty!

I wouldn’t vote for their candidate if he were the LAST candidate on earth after the way women and Hillary supporters have been treated in this primary.

COUNT THE VOTES. No nominee can be legitimate if they don’t count Florida and Michigan towards the nomination!

  45. yeah!!!!!! Hillary wins KY by “large margin” according to abc

  46. Oregonian: A draft dodger that ran out of gas on the way to Canada.

  47. It’s called isn’t it ? I just turned on fox .. they were giving the exit polls .. she even got the youth vote .. 49 - 46 ..

I was out and just got back in ..

    Love to Kentucky !

  48. looking at exit polls it looks like it will be 35-40 pts

  49. gary, grunge spread all the way to Appalachia back then, believe me :) but seattle is ultimately responsible for that

  50. it looks like she took most demos

  51. Hooooly Nominee!!!

The Victorious One took a seismic shellacking in KY.

    Yikes!

  52. according to exit polls she won phd’s by 20 points, income over 100000 by 40 pts. what happened to his base??

  53. Mint juleps for everyone!

  54. tucsonlynn–with Makers Mark, of course

  55. Towards the end of “Race for the White House,” David Gregory said that Obama was not going to claim victory tonight, because he didn’t want to “seen” to be gloating, or upset Clinton supporters who are tired of being told that the race was over. That would be us!

Then Timmeh gets on and says that Obama is going to claim “some kind of victory” tonight because he is achieving the critical milestone of “the majority of elected delegates.” Of course, no one mentions that this would be majority only if MI and FLA are NOT counted. So it sounds like Timmeh is gloating even if Barack doesn’t wish to be seen as gloating.

Then Joe Scarborough (I think, I wasn’t looking at the TV) asks, “why doesn’t someone just tell her to stop? Why are they letting her run around and say that she’s won a majority of the popular votes?” Um, uh, maybe because she has.

Now someone “on the ground” in Iowa reports that Obama is not going to claim victory, but instead will simply be giving a “thank you” speech.

Sounds like Barack doesn’t want to be seen as gloating — while gloating:

” Even though I am humbly refraining from claiming victory, I’d like to thank America for giving me a majority of the elected delegates — and by the way, MI and FLA, thank YOU for breaking The ROOLz.”

ETA @ 7:40 to add the missing “NOT.”

  56. garychapelhill,
    of course!

We were going to host a returns watching party, and serve that, but the protest at the tee vee station seemed more important.

Of course, I somewhat regret that now, as it is about 106 degrees outside, and a cold frosty silver mug full of iced bourbon and mint sounds delightful.
    GO HILLARY!

  57. Portland, Oregon with Loretta lynn and Jack White?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XK5D8nWADTQ

  58. litigatormom ..” I love it !!! ;) “Mi and FLA, thank YOU for breaking the ROOLz”

  59. one of the biggest surprises when i moved to KY was the horserace scene. We’d go every sat during the season and spend all day at the track, drink bourbon. Only place I ever did that regularly

  60. b!!! that’s perfect! thanks

  61. No, thank you!! :-)

  62. The bar is open on the next thread.
Rico is serving some kind of Oregon stuff.
maybe as a good luck omen?

  63. RD, the thing of it is…I want you to be Brazile, girlfriend…..rather than MoDo….anyway, what would all this be without you–you pulled this whole thing together and look how fab it is! You deserve a post with the Clintons, apres this….

ps–RD Oregon is so green you wouldn’t believe it. True environmentalists have already seen right through him, especially on nukes. He is not a green candidate and he insulted Al Gore with that crack about considering hiring him–out here in the West, you cannot know how sacred “green” is to us. The whole Western states thing..
