Chelsea Speaks UP! Go, Chelsea, Go!!

Remember Monica? How could you forget. It was every fourth word on the lips of breathless media reporters and pundits during 1998-2000. They would not let it die and won’t let us forget it.

And they’re still at it. Today, somebody stupidly asked Chelsea Clinton about it:

Campaigning at Butler College in Indianapolis, an audience member asked the 28 year-old whether the Monica Lewinsky scandal had damaged her mother’s reputation.

“Wow, you’re the first person actually that’s ever asked me that question in the, I don’t know maybe, 70 college campuses I’ve now been to, and I do not think that is any of your business,” Clinton responded, appearing a bit surprised by the question. The crowd immediately cheered loudly at the response.

Amazing! What a perfect response. I couldn’t have said it better myself. You tell’em, Chelsea!

  1. I just saw video of this on NBC–Wow, what presence of mind. But the slowness of her response did inidcate to me just how amazed, hurt, and–perhaps–angry she was about the question.

Damage her mother’s reputation??? Stupid question, very stupid.

As Jane Austen wrote of Emma, “That was badly done, questioner. Badly done, indeed.”

    And well done, Chelsea!

  2. Wow, good for her!

  3. Sounds like another Obomination attack – which makes another Clinton come shining through looking so like presidental material. The apple does not fall far from the tree -

  4. so I clicked on the damned clip and did I get to hear the crowd response? or the actual question?
    Of course not.
    Bastards.

  5. Obama’s General Merrill “Tony” McPeak and McPeak’s identical argument at the beginning of the Iraq invasion (2003):
Is Iraq the last country we confront in the Middle East?
Who wants to volunteer to get cross-ways with us? We’ll be there a century, hopefully. If it works right.

  6. Chelsea’s behavior is tearing the Democratic Party apart. For the good of the Party and the good of the country, she should tone down her rhetoric or have her mother drop out of the race.

  7. This is exactly why the Clintons do not want the press talking to her. You know that would be the first thing out of their mouths.

  8. Figures CNN would take out the question and the applause…just so Wolf could paint it her as “off guard.”

I hope some clip will surface of the whole thing at some point.

    so very LOL, gqmartinez

  9. BernieO: She is old enough to rightly tell them to “Go to Hell”. I think it’s time she made people aware of what a miserable thing they did to her family. She might have lived in the White House but she was entitled to a nice family life. They ruined it for her. Nobody needed to know what went on in the Oval Office. I’m not condoning it but it was hardly any of *our* business.

  10. Re: Obama’s current lead in the popular vote.

jjmtacoma & al: I just checked the numbers and do you realize that 90% (640,000 votes) of Obama’s current lead (711,000) comes from the state of IL alone? And that is when you take out FL & MI.

    This is really interesting.

  11. she’s a lot like her mom ;-)

  12. MABlue: That is absolutely amazing. In other words, if Obama were a senator from, say, Connecticut, his negligible lead would be close to nil.

  13. Clinton’s answer was met with loud applause from the about 200 people in the audience. After the applause, Clinton responded, “and I also don’t think that should be the last question.” She took another question on global warming and wrapped up the event.

  14. Mr. Obama relayed a story of how his Kenyan father and his Kansan mother fell in love because of the tumult of Selma, but he was born in 1961, four years before the confrontation at Selma took place. When asked later, Mr. Obama clarified himself, saying: “I meant the whole civil rights movement.”
    and more…

  15. gqmartine,:

“Chelsea’s behavior is tearing the Democratic Party apart. For the good of the Party and the good of the country”

Heh, heh, Is there anything the Clinton’s won’t do?

    Good for Chelsea!.

  16. You often hear it said, of some political or other opportunist, that he would sell his own grandmother if it would suit his interests. But you seldom, if ever, see this notorious transaction actually being performed, which is why I am slightly surprised that Obama got away with it so easily. (Yet why do I say I am surprised? He still gets away with absolutely everything.)
Looking for a moral equivalent to a professional demagogue who thinks that AIDS and drugs are the result of a conspiracy by the white man, Obama settled on an 85-year-old lady named Madelyn Dunham, who spent a good deal of her youth helping to raise him and who now lives alone and unwell in a condo in Honolulu. It would be interesting to know whether her charismatic grandson made her aware that he was about to touch her with his grace and make her famous in this way. http://www.slate.com/id/2187277

  17. I detest Donna Brazile. What a complete a**, and a moron to boot.

    From the comments:

What a dishonest post. No where do you meniton that Clinton responded to a direct, personal question; she was asked, “If YOUR pastor had said those things, what would YOU PERSONALLY do?” What would you have her say?? She said, “For me, he would not have remained my pastor. That’s something everyone has to decide for themselves.”

In addition, Hillary had EVERY F**KING right to answer it the way she did. So Donna should STFU.

  18. http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0325obama-pastor0325-ON.html

We don’t have a choice when it comes to our relatives,” she said. “We have a choice when it comes to our pastors and the churches we attend. Everyone will have to decide these matters for themselves. They are obviously very personal matters.”

If Wright were her pastor, she said, “the choice would be clear.”

Near the end, the article has the other campaign’s response. You have three guesses.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement, “It’s disappointing to see Hillary Clinton’s campaign sink to this low in a transparent effort to distract attention” from her acknowledgment that she had exaggerated an account of a hostile reception in Bosnia as first lady in 1996.

Meanwhile, the International Herald Tribune has decide to start this stroy with this paragraph (I kid you not):

Hillary Rodham Clinton, apparently trying to deflect the embarrassing fuss over her exaggerated account of a trip to Bosnia 12 years ago, told reporters at a Democratic presidential campaign stop that she would have left the church that rival Barack Obama attends over critical remarks his pastor made about America.

    Just shoot me.

  19. What happened to my comment? :(

Anyhow, be careful, your blood pressure will rise reading the leading graph here:

    http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/03/26/america/NA-POL-US-Elections.php

I am sure why that AP article (in IHT) is different from other versions. Perhaps IHT, in an effort to save costs, has replaced its operation with the press arm of the Obama campaign.

    Another version:

  20. Chelsea has her parents’ spine!

  21. This little kerfuffle cracks me up. I gather a journalist in Pittsburgh asked the question.. and she was supposed to not answer, maybe? I think a lot of us would say Rev. Wright would not be our pastor. It’s not like he was a teenager when he was attending that church & I doubt the stuff we saw was isolated.. in fact I’m guessing there will be a drip, drip, drip of more Wright stuff from now until.. when, I don’t know – hoping it ends at the convention because Obama gets no further.

  22. ghost2: the Obamaphiles have jumped the shark big time and this new screeching is going to backfire big time in PA. My mom, sister, brother and many of their friends were deeply offended by Wright’s sermons and everytime they are reminded of it, the less they like Obama. So, I hope they continue to let their gut feelings get the better of their self restraint.

  23. riverdaughter, I’m so amazed at the number of people who think Wright isn’t an issue. The people I talk to her in Kansas are pretty shocked about it. And very nervous about Obama’s chances with those videos hanging over his head.

  24. some of the commenters on CBS’ webpage are DISGUSTING.

    I reported one for ‘abuse.’

    People are really hateful assholes

  25. I’ve gotten messages from very pro-Obama friends claiming this or that argument – such as McCain endorsed by wingnut preachers, or how brilliant pundits thought The Speech was – which to them show the issue has been defused/debunked for good. Yeah, right. I just don’t buy it – that in middle America a guy saying what he said, on tape, will be forgotten – it’s shocking, it crosses lines that a lot of folks believe should never be crossed, and it’s still constantly referenced on cable news. You know there are more videos where that came from, the church sold them and they’ve been purchased by several news outlets and doubtless GOP operatives. Heck I can’t remember much of The Speech myself and I’m a news junkie, but I sure as hell remember the Wright quotes. I just don’t buy that the nuances of what Obama was talking about are going to stick with people and the Wright videos.. they stick.

I expect Fox News is sitting on a trove of them just for the drip, drip, drip effect of releasing more as the campaign continues. I also wonder, based on comments I read elsewhere remarking an Obama interview doing damage control on Hannity’s show, this was the Friday just after the story broke, in which he was pointedly asked by a Fox reporter several questions about whether he was present when these remarks were made, and he denied it. Some commenters thought this was probably Fox showing their hand as far as what footage they’re holding on to..

  26. RIverdaughter – I agree that Chelsea is old enough to tell the media to go to hell, but they would use this as another excuse to distract us by bringing up Monica yet again. Just look at what Brian Ross did when Hillary’s records as First Lady were released. The first story was where she was when the blue dress stain happened.

  27. BernieO, yeah but what was your response?

Seriously, that’s the only response that matters. The response of regular people. You know—voters.

Some people are going to go there no matter what happens. Hells’ bells, Sen. Clinton could be Assumed Into HeavenTM and they’d talk about how the sky was a blue color sorta like that dress.

But let me ask: is talking about that blue dress going to save your job? Our your house? Or pay for your prescriptions? Or get some money in the bank for your kid’s education or your retirement or preventing some other personal disaster? Make wheat grow faster so the price of bread doesn’t match the price of gas?

Is talking about the blue dress going to stop the polar bears from drowning? Stop the killing in Iraq? Protect the people of Afghanistan? Stop AIDS?

Maybe talking about that blue dress just a creepy mantra and the blue dress itself a creepy fetish. Because this whole thing is creepy with a capital creep.

Me? I don’t like the weirdly pornographic take. I like my porn goodheartedly twisted thanks, not all fakely high-minded.

Oh, my fab GF is having really bad hay fever this morning, and would like to know how exactly this is Hillary Clinton’s fault.

Thank you. I’ll take your responses off the air.
