I had taken Countdown off my DVR schedule and had restricted our access to MSNBC because I didn’t want my adolescent daughter exposed to the ridicule and contempt for women that passes for news on that channel, But I dropped into Countdown last night for a few minutes to check the coverage of the Deval Patrick beta test of Obama’s campaign and was horrified by what I saw. There was Keith Olbermann, his voice dripping with contempt for Hillary Clinton with every word.
Having isolated myself from everything but C-Span for the past couple of weeks, I had no idea it had gotten this bad. If you watched cable TV, you might very well get the impression that Clinton’s campaign is hanging on by a slender thread and every action by it makes it more likely to snap at any second. There is no stupid move she and her advisors are not capable of making and they inflict so much damage to her that *when* she finally gives up, she won’t be able to recover politically. Why doesn’t she just drop out now and spare us having to watch her being humliated, as the new media feels they must? Why does she insist on tearing the party apart by continuing to run, as Howard Fineman suggests?
The over the top hand-wringing, the contempt, the “expert” after “commentator” who tsk-tsk’d and made their grave pronouncements was reminiscent of something. I just couldn’t put my finger on it.
Then it hit me this morning.
There was a day back in 1998 when Keith Olbermann had his first show on MSNBC when he was talking to a quartet of some blonde bimbo Republican “elves”, going over the Lewinski scandal, ONE MORE TIME, when I saw the same look of disgust on Keith’s face as must have flashed across mine last night. It’s the same damn thing! He was being forced to rehash the same sordid material night after night and over time, his disdain for the scandalmongering was becoming more evident. The elves would go on about how Clinton was a disgrace to his office, he couldn’t do anything right, no one liked him, why were we being subjected to having to watch this and why didn’t he just resign for the good of he country? And Keith *hated* it. Hated having to talk about the same sordid details all of the time. Hated how we couldn’t move on to anything else. And who cared anyway? Clinton was still wildly popular.
I remember Keith resigned not long after than night. It was pretty obvious why he did it. If he was going to have a new show, he wanted to report the real news. So, he started cable hopping from sports desk to sports desk and then finally, back to MSNBC as the reincarnation of Edward R. Murrow.
Or that’s how it seemed until recently. Now, he’s doing the work of the elves himself. He’s indulging in the same over-the-top breathless coverage of Hillary Clinton that he so despised in the Lewinski years. He’s not a journalist anymore but a tabloid specialist, channeling mob violence on the Villagers’ and Big Blog Stores’ behalf. He has become his own worst enemy.
But here’s the thing. Hillary Clinton is liked by a lot of the same people who didn’t give a rat’s ass what her husband did in the Oval Office cloak room. No one cares if the Villagers are raving lunatics who are going to bay at the moon until Hillary leaves the public stage. Keith should know this. He should know that this over the top vicious coverage of everything Clinton is what drove many of us away from TV news in the first place. He makes a big deal about how reprehensible Fox “News” is but then he is copying the Fox 1998 script almost identically. It does more damage to his brand name than to hers. If she’s driven off, this whole episode will be notorious as being the worst abuse of media power that was ever imposed on a presidential campaign.
I want to know what made Keith do it. What made him sell out and start attacking a person who we all know doesn’t deserve this kind of treatment. I’ve been following her campaign and it’s not performing badly. It made some adjustments, it’s had to raise some money. But if these are the kinds of things that should doom a campaign, John McCain should have been out months ago. And no one seems to be concerned that Obama’s campaign is dropping wads of cash in states that he can’t win. That doesn’t sound efficient or smart but I guess because he has more money than God (or he *used* to) his campaign tactics are above scrutiny.
Someone from the Village should clue me in. What is it about the Clintons that drives otherwise perfectly rational people absolutely insane? Seriously, Keith, I want to know. Because I don’t see it. Is it criminal behavior? Is it something personal? Did they cut you off in traffic, waterboard you, steal your iPod? What?!
I suspect that part of the reason Keith is acting out is that David Shuster was suspended over what he said about Chelsea Clinton. Yes, that was pretty rough and I expect that the Clintons were pretty mad about it. But until you have your own daughter, Keith, you will never understand that they were not overreacting. And it certainly doesn’t give YOU any excuse for behaving like your worst enemies.
And as for Hillary, you know what to do.
BTW: I’m back to work today so posting will be light. If anyone has some tasty links, put them in the comments and I’ll do a web roundup a little later.

riverdaughter,
I don’t get it either. The Clinton’s are caring, brilliant nice people and I simply do do understand how anyone can hate them. But then, I don’t see Obama as the second coming either, so what the hell do we know?
I am glad that we don’t watch television here in my own little paradise, , sounds as if it could make me homicidal.
Tucsonlynn: I started to get concerned when Rich in PA started to comment about how bbadly the Clinton campaign is running. He sounded embarrassed and depressed. And from where I am sitting, he has no reason to feel this way. The difference is that I stopped watching MSNBC and reading DAilyKos and TPM. When I see them indulging in the dame perception management they have railed against in the past, then I can no longer consider them credible. It’s not that I’m looking for my own spin on things. I’m just looking for the truth. And the truth is that the Clinton campaign played the “just words” thing beautifully. Not only did they turn that rock over so everyone could see what was at the very heart of the Obama campaign but they went a step further and got the message out on ET. Now that was genius, Because their target audience isn’t watching MSNBC. It’s watching Britney’s saga and Nicole’’s pregnancy and now it knows that Obama is recycling Deval Patrick’s campaign and that he hasn’t had an inspirational thought in years.
Yes, Rich in PA did sound upset, and if he is still reading Kos he might want to consider taking a break from it, honestly, the few times someone here or elsewhere has linked to it and I went there I needed a bath.
I do agree with him that the campaign could have been run better. I am glad they made some changes and hope it is not too late. Of course, I am hoping for a miracle out of Wisconsin today, but the open primary crap will hurt us
After this election if the powers that be don’t do something about Iowa, NH, open primaries caucuses, etc, we may as well just give up.
I will be spending a week in Texas to help out and can’t wait to see their ridiculous system of a primary and a caucus in one day.
As far as Clinton’s target audience watching Britney’s saga rather than MSNBC, oh ..I don’t know how I feel about that.
I hate that we have been told that Clinton’s supporters are all poor uneducated old white women.
We know that isn’t so and it somehow makes me think …hey wait a minute, where did I read that very thing might be making a lot of people go over to Obama? ..the cool factor?
i just want to say again that I am delighted that you created your own blog.
The idiocy of Olberman, he tries to be the new Murrow, but is obsessed with O’Reily. Why the adolescent antics? I cannot watch any of them anymore. The fact is they are so lazy, I started to notice this before the elections, they let the mainstream blogs do the work for them. They just lift the stories from their front pages. No reporting, no investigations and of course no analysis. So, copying is not an issue for them. The blogs are making it easy for the MSM to not have real journalists. Sad state of affairs how a meme starts in one within a few moments it’s everywhere as news. I must say the Obama people have used this brilliantly. It reminds me of the hysteria during the Iraq war build up and then the embedded journalists. Critical thinking and analysis are gone.
I’m not saying they are poor and uneducated. It’s just that they aren’t bloggers and in their cable markets, ET generally follows the news. That’s all. I just think it was a brilliant manuever. If you’re not going to get your message out on a news program, why not use a different kind of program to deliver it? I think this is why she chose the Hallmark Channel before Super Tuesday (the vixen!). She knew that’s what her some of her target audience was going to be watching.
Not everyone is a C-Span addict. That doesn’t mean they’re dumb.
Stellaa: I’m with you on the similarities to the leadup to the Iraq War. We’re getting rolled again.
We have Countdown on one of our TiVosbut I haven’t been able to watch it for the past month or two. I can’t remember exactly when it started, but I remember I started to feel more and more uncomfortable watchi g his show. He started getting more shrill, pompous and self-righteous, and not just about Hillary. His ego became bigger than his news delivery. It turned me off so I turned him off. Dan Abrahms is much fairer and he’s more a standard news guy so sometimes I watch his show.
While in some ways I’m glad Shuster was suspended, I have been concerned about the backlash from that. Especially since Tweety has gotten a free pass for his idiocy. Perhaps another type of “punishment” would have been more effective… like making Shuster cover and promote “proud and powerful” female movers and shakers in the news for a while… focussing on women in business, government and the military. Now that would be fun to watch!
Well, I couldn’t punish Tweety because I wasn’t recording him but KO is the big money maker. The decisions get made at a higher level based on money: how much revenue is KO pulling in. What he’s gaining in Obamaphiles, he’s losing in Clintonistas.
And I’m with you BTW. It started to make me uncomfortable in the past couple of months so I wasn’t rushing home to watch him as much. It just shows you how destructive the business culture is to the news divisions of many networks. The tone and coverage varies depending on who’s tuning in. That’s just wrong, IMHO. So, I’m not watchin’. In Treatment is keeping me entertained.
It’s too bad Olbermann has drunk the kool-aid. He had the potential to be the next great journalist of our generation. I guess it’s hard not to succomb to peer pressure when he’s working with douchebags like Chris Matthews and Joe Scarborough. I think Olbermann will pay for what he’s doing to the Clintons now. A lot of his fans who are Clinton supporters have abandoned him. I read on other sites postings about last night’s Countdown show and how people have lost a lot of respect for him. Oh well. He needs to leave MSNBC if he ever wants to be considered as a real journalist.
Not too long ago the Obomites were scoffing at Hillary for using some of his slogans, such as “fired up”, or “ready to go”. However, when his campaign is caught using almost the whole premise of his campaign as previously used by his good friend, Deval, it is simply because Hillary is down and was horrible enough to leak this. This is, of course, legitimate, because it is always fair game to blame the Clintons; everyone does it. It has been thus ever since the Republicans sent Ken Starr, gunning to get something on President Clinton. I do deeply regret that he gave them something, which so many people believe vindicated whatever punishment they chose to dish out, not only on him but her, as well. Every once in awhile I still want to bonk him on the head, but I still feel it is much worse to lie a whole country into war. How do they treat Laura Bush? Yep, like such a warm, highly respected woman.
I am still open to voting for Obama, if he is nominated, because I see just staying at home the same as casting a ballot for George Bush all over again. That is like taking poison and I really don’t think Obama is all that bad, just not my choice for now. My turn is coming soon
As far as David Shuster, did they mention if he was suspended with pay, or without pay?. Surely, this station that is all about revving up something derogatory about Hillary, they found some way to actually reward him while no one was looking. They took responsibility and apologized, didn’t they —or, did they?
Darn, I should have read the last post better! I did not vote for George Bush, either one of them, ever!!! Just do not want to take any chances on McCain getting elected.
txindy: Don’t worry! I got your point. Well put.
Please look at my blog:
http://artier.wordpress.com/2008/02/19/hello-world/
Artier: we’ve had your type lurking around here before. There’s no THERE there. 8 years and $70 million worth of investigations and harrassment turned up squat.
Please take your road show somewhere else. Like where stupid people hang out. You know, where Obamaphiles blog.
It is remarkable to me how many people swallow the garbage whole.
It really is a different world when you dont just watch it on tv.
Olbermann is an embarrassment and always has been. he is a fake progressive who is only playing the part on TV to get the ratings from unwitting progressives.
He is so pompous it’s a wonder he doesn’t explode from his own ego which is odd considering that all he is is just a sports guy who writes political speeches for himself. I miss Phil Donahue!
It seems so obvious that some ‘isms’ are ok… if you live in this society, you know that sexism is more than tolerated. Olbermann allows sexist comments on his show, but would never – and should never – allow anything that touches on race. You don’t see many smart, reasonable women on his show, do you?
Stevie: yup. He’s the kind of guy who has a man cave at home. He’s off my DVR and I don’t watch him anymore. It’s been a sobering experience.
I’ve caught a couple of Olbermann rants recently. The vitriol was amazing. Hard to believe he was ever a “real” journalist. But the ranting probably pays a lot better.
As for Shuster: His phraseology showed poor judgment, since a lot of his viewers probably wouldn’t know that “pimp” isn’t always a negative term these days. I understood what he was trying to say and think an apology should have been enough. Chelsea Clinton is 28 now, and an attorney. She’s no longer that little girl in the White House that mommy and daddy need to shield from the press.
Olbermann (Obamamann, as I now call him) would be featured nightly on Olbermanns “Worst Persons in the World” if Olbermann weren’t Olbermann. Think about it…
I too cut out all MSNBC programming a few weeks ago.
Has anyone else noticed how Olbermann was complimentary of Hillary a few months back? Now he sounds like a rabid dog who needs a rabies shot. No he sounds like Bill-O. Worst person in the world! I used to like Olbermann…boy was I wrong.
Thank you for writing this. I thought I was going crazy seeing this transformation in Keith Olbermann. I don’t watch him anymore. Can’t stand the noise.
I used to glue to Olbermann’s Countdown every day. About a couple of months ago, things started to taste funny. I realized that he had joined the Obama machine. i started leaving comment on youtube like
Keith Obamamann – the woorrst person in the wooorrrld!!
I’m glad other people are feeling the same say. I want to see a YouTube compilation with the title “Keith Olbermann for Obama – Keith Obamamann – the wooorrst person in the wooorld” that composes all his super charged and biased comments.
Let the name Obamamann catch on!
The lastest show on linking the Clintons, with tried and made up connections, to the Obama passport breach by Obamamann and Shuster had cross the line!!!!!
Sorry Edward Murrow. I used to think Keith was carrying your causes. I apologize if you felt stained that analogy I and others ever made.
Who cares anymore what Keith Olbermann says. Like many women I decided months ago that he had one of the most sexist commentary shows going. The guy has problems but I haven’t watched his show since late February when I finally decided my blood pressure couldn’t take any more. I skip MSNBC altogether, and switch off CNN the moment one of their correspespondents begins spouting nonesense. There are other sources out there for news if one looks hard.
